Spring Game Grin. When I saw it, I had no doubt this guy was taking the program to the moon. Everything else that happened after was incidental.

The camps help the smaller programs just as much if not more. LImiting the camps, limits their cash-strapped football departments from being exposed to more players.
The smaller programs essentially ride the financial coattails of the larger more flush big programs who act as sponsors.
Limiting the camps is just another way of trying to slow down Harbaugh who has a non-stop work ethic. While hurting smaller programs who derive great benefit from Harbaugh's work.
|3 weeks 8 hours ago||Maybe this was his middle ground?||
Haven't heard anyone mention the very real possibility that a majority of schools in the B1G sent word out through back channels they were against them. Obviously intending to slow down Harbaugh and to avoid working harder themselves.
In that case Delaney's best play is to do exactly what he did. Offer no real public support and then drop a meaningless lost cause vote for the camps.

Been watching this for 35 years and I grant you that criteria changes. But when you listen to the chair of the selection com. explain things after, it's very rare you'll hear: "they lost by a lot in their losses." It's always about having a quality season in a big conference (winning record), beating enough good teams in the process, strength of schedule, overall winning percentage, and showing at least some forward momentum at the end.
Beating the conference champion in sort of a home game for them is strong evidence of a team playing well when it counts. And the Michigan factor and the overall popularity among fans helps too.
I think the experts who have Michigan out are overthinking and trying to predict things based on phantom recent trends. And also over rating smaller conference schools competing for these final spots.
You'll never sell me that all things being equal, small conference schools are given equal weight in strength of schedule to a 20 win Big Ten team who was near first place most of the season.

That was a hopeless situation when he took over. 5 years he turned them into the bully program west of the rockies and a destination for big time recruits. Whatever greatness he achieves for Michigan, he'll have to go ape great to top the job he did there. The other thing about that place is there is very little fan or alumni pressure. They aren't likely to invest in sports like they are at an SEC schhol for instance. You play second banana to the school itself.
|8 weeks 6 days ago||Their athletic department is||
Their athletic department is by and large a mess. They have been doing great in the two highest profile sports. I wouldn't say the fact of having two of the best coaches in those two sports, one an all-time legend, equates to saying the place has any committment to overall excellence. Embarrassing is a fair word to describe their programs in many sports.

Guy coaches both? That's amazing. Appreciate the updates as always.

Each side of the Beilein scrum have lots ammunition from that one. The result was sort of secondary to the bigger picture. Brilliant job scheming an offense without the benefit of talented size or a slasher. Tactical mastery like we've seen since day one. On the other side, heavy reliance on outside shooting leading to two major scoring droughts and lack of size and athletes to play winning defense.
|10 weeks 2 days ago||The problem is the NBA itself||
PIston fans gave up because they have no A list star player and the NBA is set up for teams who do. You can't win it all now with a true team like in the mid-2000s. They changed the defensive rules about hand use and a star player can decide every important game. Totally different game now. The NBA is about getting a star either through the draft or free agency. Piston fans are waiting around for that. Otherwise, it's just really rich guys lolly gagging up and down the floor for dozens of meaningless games in the winter.
|10 weeks 3 days ago||We need better players and||
We need better players and should be getting them. The facilities, tradition and school are second to none. Philosophically Beilein can win and beat our rivals the way he coaches. If we had more talent.
|11 weeks 1 day ago||Kelly will be stealing this||
Kelly will be stealing this idea for sure. He's been very open since Day 1 about the need for the school to get out into all the corners of the country where they'll need to recruit. That's wny the Shamrock Series and all that. He just never thought of it or it would have happened already.
|11 weeks 6 days ago||Excellence. I love these updates||
Fans should be proud of Michigan's traditionally high finish in he Director's Cup. Invariably much higher than our top football and basketball competition. It's a sign of across the board committment to excellence and systemic health. It's way harder and more impressive to do than snag a once in a lifetime basketball coach who hangs around for two decades and simply ride his coat tails. More than a few of the programs outside of the big 2 at OSU and MSU are embarrassingly bad. They actually should be ashamed. But they aren't. Which is another reason being a Michigan fan is special.
|12 weeks 12 hours ago||Always looked at games||
Always looked at games against MSU the same except in rare circumstances. Beating them isn't about any sort of bragging rights. It's pain avoidance and relief. I feel like that's what Michigan is supposed to do. Not like how I see beating Notre Dame or Ohio State. Given that feeling, MSU is not a rival from my perspective as a Michigan fan. I wouldn't pay five seconds of attention to them if they weren't playing Michigan. So I don't get the mentality of their fans regarding Michgan.
|12 weeks 1 day ago||Everybody bagging their||
Everybody bagging their success during Haden's time forgets to mention they were gutted to the tune of 10 scholarships a year for three seasons. Very hard to not only recruit but run proper practices with that little roster depth. I can't think of another program that would have come through everything as well as they did. Kiffin won ten games including at Oregon his first year. Pre-season number 1 the next year. The program averaged 8 wins a year the entire run of the sanctions, won the PAC 12 South twice, beat ND twice, UCLA, and Stanford twice. Yeah not great results, but you run those sanctions on a UCLA they'd spend a decade digging out. Plus it looks like he nailed it with this basketball coach. As a USC fan, I am glad he's leaving, but it wasn't all bad.

Greatest team in NFL History. They would chewed up Miami in any Super Bowl rematch. I believe they played game 1 with Steve Fuller at quarterback in the Orange Bowl. Bad start and couldn't recover. It happens. It wouldn't have happened twice and not on the biggest stage for all the marbles.

The Federal government should get together with these note holders and come up with a plan and then simply hire all the people who are deeply in debt to work x amount of time per week for x amount of time to satisfy all or a portion of the debt. Things that need to be done in the community. There are so many cash strapped cities who are crying out for workers to do upteen different things that aren't getting done. Check out Cleveland, Detroit, Chicago, and Flint as examples.
|13 weeks 3 days ago||I love your post. It's always||
I love your post. It's always worth pointing out that there are countless ways to learn all the great lessons guys learn playing football without the very real threat of serious injury to the brain. We're going to have to evolve as a society beyond the sport at some point. At least the sport as it's played now.
|13 weeks 3 days ago||The way many parents love the||
The way many parents love the sport as fans and refuse to read and give weight to the emerging science about the sport, I don't think they should be allowed to make the choice for their kids. Just like they legally can't make the choice to allow their kids to consume alcohol. Outlaw it until a player reaches X age.
|13 weeks 4 days ago||Harbaugh lets them take||
Harbaugh lets them take visits to whereever and size up their choices. He is doing the same on his end. On that level, I am fine with what he is doing. Risk assumption on both sides. Plus, as has been pointed out many, many times, we have no idea the communications along the line between the coaches and the player. There could be, and likely are things he is telling these kids the moment they accept an offer. They just might not hear it. So jumping to negative conclusions is foolish. Didn't we learn that lesson in the Swenson deal? And wasn't that way "worse" on the initial surface?
|14 weeks 2 days ago||Sam Webb's comments this morning||
There maybe will be a separate thread started about this. Basically Sam said the timing is worthy of criticism. But the way that it's being portrayed that Michigan wasn't in communication with this player and suddenly pulled the rug, is incorrect. It was not an "abrupt circumstance" in Sam's words. There was contact about where the player stood earlier on. And odds are they won't add a replacement in the class at the player's position.
|15 weeks 4 days ago||MSU should be getting at||
MSU should be getting at least the level of recruits they are getting. 50 wins over five seasons, two major bowl wins, an established program and head coach, and an appearance in the playoff. If I followed them, I'd be wondering why they aren't doing way better actually. If Michigan strings together a half-decade like that their classes will be insane.

The eye test tells me he is going to be a special player. But the eye test and Jim's past history tells me there aren't many schools with the promising trajectory and upside of Michigan. A battle for one recruit here or there doesn't alter the short or long-term course one bit.
|16 weeks 1 day ago||ESPN should have had it||
ESPN should have had it written in their contract with the college football PTB that they pick the date for the games. I guarantee they didn't, because the future playoff dates on the contract are mostly NYE. ESPN's fault for letting these conference commissioners continue their long-running love affair with the traditional bowls and dictate that NYD was off limits. Love the Rose Bowl, but the Semi's would have trounced everything in their path on NYD.

From what I read she was key in throwing her support behind him returning to college. She was very disappointed about the lack of security in a pro job. Seeing her husband win seventy percent plus and go to a Super Bowl with a dead-end franchise and yet get treated that way. Michigan fans thank her for sure and are glad they like it back in Michigan.
|16 weeks 6 days ago||This organization is a mess.||
This organization is a mess. It's going to be Sheldon White because that's the way they've always done things: hiring people from within who couldn't draw interest from other teams for that same job. That's always the test. The thing they have always needed: a true football czar who will change everything from the scouting down to the support staff, will elude the organization again. Life under the Fords.

Yup. Definitely the harder rocking of the two. Good call. WIthout regard to order: Yesterdays, Civil War, You Could be Mine, November Rain, Don't Cry, Knockin' On Heaven's Door, Live and Let Die, Dead Horse, Coma, Estranged, Pretty Tied up, Bad Obsession. Even if you took out the two covers, you'd have an amazing 10 song album. Really not much can touch Appetite. It was so unique. I think you take guys who have tons of drive and haven't made the money yet and you have Appetite. After that, the inspiration isn't the same.

"Slave to the Grind" is a killer album from the early 90s that almost no one talks about . Mostly because grunge had burst on the scene and all those 80's bands got sort of black balled.
