|6 days 21 hours ago||I developed my defensive instincts in the 3-point-line-free 80s||
and it was drilled into me in high school to sag and help whenever an opponent got a step on a teammate and was driving to the bucket.
Leaving a shooter only cost a potential 2, and since it was only 2, it wasn't a foregone conclusion that the shot would be taken.
With the three (or four point shot in pickup games scored by 1s and 2s), I had to change my reactions from "never give up the drive" to "is it worth stopping the drive", and it took a number of lessons learned (made threes) for the new calculus to sink in to the level of subconcious reactions.

It was irresistable TV. Don't tell me you didn't feel for the kid.
|1 week 2 days ago||Absolutely||
When you screw someone with a lower seed, there are two participants in the games/path that result.
The directly screwed lower seeded team playing way-tougher competition than it should out of the gate, and the indirectly screwed higher seeded team that gets rewarded for a great season with an early unnecessarily tough game.
|1 week 2 days ago||Did you see the pressure Florida State put on WIlton?||
I think Speight showed some positive traits in that game.
Speaking of which, MGoCoaches, how do you prepare a QB for that type of lookout-blocking by the O-Line?
Back in my day in high school, we never prepared the passing game for "what happens when you can't block?"
The Packers and Aaron Rodgers run drills that simulate what to do when things break down, but that was motivated to take advantage of the scrambling and ad-hoc playmaking ability of Rodgers.
Maybe coaches are predisposed to practicing what works, but in any event, there are times when the pass blocking is going to fail. It's only a matter of frequency (once or twice a game when the OL dominates, seemingly nearly every down versus FSU).
Why not simulate it by placing the scout team OL in front of a colored-jersey Speight plus the first team skill players versus the first team defense? One of the skill guys should be a safety valve on every pass play, so why not practice in conditions similiar to what would be faced against a top-notch pass rush?

system w/ practice at the beginning of the 2015 season. Speight had a full year and a bit of game time before his first start.

I'll cross the Elite Eight matchup bridge when we get there.
MSU looked pretty good outscoring Miami by 30 after spotting them 10, so be careful what you wish for.

Their 10 of 11 streak included that win along w/ nine other wins against lower ranked teams while the loss came at the hands of 3-seed Baylor.
Okla St lost its last three, but against Big 12 Tourney winner Iowa St twice and once against Kansas.
Our path to the B1G Tourney title of Illinois, Purdue, Minnesota, and Wisconsin was about the most difficult that could be constructed from this year's teams.

|2 weeks 2 days ago||We're not getting a five so it's OK to root for Michigan||
Iowa St, Cincinatti, Virginia, Florida? Our 4-6 B1G start cost us a shot at that line, no matter how well we're playing now.
I hope I'm wrong, as against the current fours* (second round opponent)--Florida St, West Va, Purdue, and Butler-- we wouldn't be a significant underdog. The current threes--UCLA, Louisville, Oregon, and ND--are a definite step up in difficulty.
*Lunardi for convenience
|2 weeks 2 days ago||If I were a 2 seed and could pick 23 teams to avoid||
in the 2nd round, Michigan would be one of them.
As to the five seed, Lundardi has Iowa St (won Big 12 Tourney), Cincinatti (in American Finals vs SMU), Virginia (lost to ND in ACC quarters, falls to five), and Florida (lost to Vandy in quarters, falls to five)
We're playing like a five (or better), but those games that got us to 4-6 in the B1G have to count for something. I don't see it.
