if this is consistent in any way with the department's 'Best man over Michigan man' parameter.
You can take that to read as 'The past doesn't matter so much as the present' - and at present Les Miles has to be a top candidate. Not the top, of course, but way up there.
He's also not going to screw up his young team's minds with no-comments or waffling: he is a winner and wants to win that bowl game. Whatever he is saying in terms of denial is mostly coach speak I think.
As for UM's approach, they have to be different (open, honest) if they want to bring about significant change.

|1 week 5 days ago||He's ready in the NBA eyes||
I think it's more useful to look at things he doesn't do so well. The last two home games it was interesting seeing teams attack him repeatedly whenever they had him 1-on-1 on the perimiter. NJIT really hammered away at him with success, constantly able to penetrate (especially left).
But the NBA will look at that first step and think they can translate that into lateral movement on D. That wouldn't scare scouts off.
He's very, very quick, with that aforementioned step, so his lack of strength going to the rim won't worry most. He looks much more consistent with his midrange this year, partially because it looks like he is pulling up way closer to the hoop (I'd love to see some sort of ExpressVu on this but it looks this way, can'y be sure). Going right he is killing it. He also has more body control and is getting better looks and finishes tighter in.
Passing he might not look great, but the team is cold, uncertain, playing without much confidence. A lack of an athletic inside finisher is hurting. Plus he is the red flag, drawing lots of help on any sort of penetration. His job in this offense is definitely not to kick out or drive and dish: you want this guy shooting.
He has virtually no flaws in his outside shot. Irvin has a more 'textbook' form but Caris has the quick release, mentality, and results.
It's a different NBA now, raw potential and flaws don't bother them as much. Gone.

|3 weeks 3 days ago||Think Levert, Irvin go||
And Walton stays for sure.
Those two will probably be at a high point by season's end. An NBA team will love Irvin's elevation and fluid release, his huge first step & driving ability, his discipline on offense. He's also wide and strong, and will be even better going to the hoop as the season progresses.
Levert is so quick and talented, even when people set out to stop him he can get them on his hip, find gaps, etc. Another guy with an outstanding first step. He is confident and always a threat. A bit too light for the NBA now, but will grow into it.
Real tough next year...but Beilein creates these nice problems that bloom in end February and March...
|3 weeks 3 days ago||What a game||
Sees the floor so so well. Spacing, awareness, wow. Clutch. Open 3, gotta take it. must be so fun playing in this system for this coach.
On that note, was surprised how poor Caris' shot selection was in the 2nd half.
|3 weeks 3 days ago||Syracuse is never that bad||
because of their zone. Even their freshmen play it smart.
Boeheim pegged Chatman to beat them. Coach B got him out, then switched away from that hi-lo 3-out offense with Caris at the foul line and went to his preferred 4-out. Spike's penetration and dishing opened them up just enough.
Nice to not waste energy with all the baseline movement and off-ball switching against that zone - just a little flare screen now and then from the 5.
Little too tense at the end. Man do we ever not box out. Doyle has to stop going down like he's shot EVERY time someone penetrates. But hey, we made our possessions count more in that last 10 minutes.
Good to win while still having a lot of work to do.
|3 weeks 3 days ago||Space.||
Make it, find it, fill it.
|3 weeks 3 days ago||Disagree||
Levert's 3-shooting is too valuable to sacrifice. It's still early, they want to see what Chatman can give them there.
|3 weeks 3 days ago||Not that bad||
We are just missing open shots. the 17 3's were for the most part pretty good looks.
Our O philosophy is open 3's or drives. Chatman is the elbow where they had the centres earlier in the season. Against that zone S knows our 5's are slow - a quick leaper would be ruining them down there. Chatman has hit a jumper, but can't get suckered into that low pass unless the 5 is looking immediately to the corner for the 3.
Is Irvin our best offensive player right now? His 1/2 court game looks incredibly smooth, killing open 3's, driving strong.
Defensively they have to do something else down low, Christmas will score 30 and foul everyone out soon enough.

I'm more afraid of the Bears (or another NFL team in need of a coach) than the Niners at this point.
The real burning question in this is: did the Harbaugh's really have a tofu-turkey Thanksgiving??? Would Michigan accept such a thing???
"And we kind of thought maybe we won’t have turkey this year for Thanksgiving. So, we’re in discussion on that. We’ll have some tofu or something."
|4 weeks 2 days ago||I was wrong||
I was very perplexed by his move inside and thought it took away from his strengths in pursuit and blitzing wide. Space Coyote had defended the potential of the switch earlier IIRC, around the Utah game I think.
But the 2nd half he has been one of the few great things to watch on the team. Guys like me often criticize based on small samples of one or two games w/o the ability to see the long-term plan. JMFR is a great case-point. The lb's and d-line weren't a catastrophe this year - the D is overrated statistically but these units made their share of plays. Their slips were magnified by a secondary that can't cover very well and an offense that can't pass or score.
|4 weeks 2 days ago||Clone?||
How is he a clone? How did he hire Hackett?
A pari of CEO's, sure, are they all the same?
White guy backup for Bo at UM, alright, you get that one.
Why would DB be smiling or satisfied in any way aobut this? He lost out, his ego-driven insecurities were exposed. He doesn't seem like the kind of guy who would have deliberatley orchestrated a massive egg on his face just to surreptitiously insert a 'clone' into a position he apprently relished.
|4 weeks 3 days ago||Thought Spielman was the next||
Thought Spielman was the next year. Well whatever, some damned Buckeye.
|4 weeks 3 days ago||This||
Our 1 usually comes to the line, receives, passes out, then screens once or twice before rolling in. The 1 must read the D, be a good passer, read the movement of 1 through 4, time screens and cuts precisely. It's rare - and at this stage kind of pointless - to pick and pop when screening for Caris while Irvin and Walton (& sometimes Spike) are setting up for 3's & backdoors. You want a pick and crashing the boards on long shots.
Defensively we don't play rim-protector so much as challenge everything high. Size isn't going to do much for you there. Doyle has good footwork and gets to spots well, but doesn't have the timing for a big shotblocker - that'll come eventually with Wilson.
Think we might see a lot more 2-in/3-out (what Beilein ran at WV, modernized) in B1G play if Donnal and Wilson progress well.
|4 weeks 3 days ago||And Muschamp to CBus in exchange||
|4 weeks 3 days ago||Oddly enough||
I think St. Urban was on the TV panel for that game, and he was disgusted by what Tom Gholson did. IIRC he said he should be thrown out of the game and suspended.
Yeah, barf, whatever. Wonder if Hall hadn't been suspended by the B1G if Urbz would have bothered issuing this missive.
|4 weeks 3 days ago||Gotta box out||
We went through phases where we just didn't check our man, guys flying in. But at the end, with Walton getting d boards, you know everyone was finally clued in.
More worrisome is who will stop a decent post with strength and moves. Especially if we start dropping to help and the post can pass.
But good win. The O is coming along, not enough motion off the ball really, but Oregon's D was so badly overplaying the 3 that with guys like Caris, Irvin and Walton you have to penetrate to the hoop. Would have loved a leaper inside for a game like this - guess what they want Wilson to become eventually.
That top 5 could be really dangerous down the stretch of the season, especially if Doyle shows he can get out and run.

And especially this:
"This team is going to play smaller than ever and launch an unprecedented number of 3s."
There is too much 'small' talent on this team to go 'tall' with a big 4 & 5. This could be a phenomenally fun team to watch: Beilein's track record of kids progressing, plus the natural shoot options in his motion O, stand to make this a very dangerous 3-centric team come tourney time.
I don't think there is any way Levert or Irvin are still around next season.
Crisler will be a launching pad this year.

But the unis look like any other uni.
We could trot out a block-M front uni, no patches (B1G, adidas - can make them blue-on-blue if they really insist), no shoulder stripes, big number on the back, no collar 'tag'. Give the kids matching blue undershirts (or whatever adidas calls those spandex compression shirts they wear). Even TV numbers we could lose - just a big one on the back, maybe for balance a small number up where the Legends patches are.
That I'd like to see for one game. One game only.
Btw why on earth do we not wear blue against Ohio State? No one is watching on black and white anymore, UCLA-USC do the colors quite nively imo.

Think the team will be excellent. They are constantly getting closer to a no traditional center team, with various moving parts that all have rounded skill sets.
You look at bigs today and they have a lot of guard skills. Olynyk from the C's is a very difficult match up because he is a 7-footer with guard skills. While Biefeldt isn't that, think the team will be fine running a further tweaked version of Beilein's read-and-react, motion principle offense.
Exciting year ahead.

Yes I think I would have left off Hart's comments a few years ago, but that was exactly the perception Dantonio wants to sustain: that UM is elitist, arrogant, dismissive of Sparty; on the recruiting trail, in the media room, on the field.
Dantonio is looking constantly for an edge. Whatever he can make work, he does. I don't think they have to be so belligerent on D to the point of attempting injury, but he makes it work. We can call it petty, childish, whatever: but we feed it with actions, and completely lack any sort of identity of our own.

for alluding to the craziness of taking Manning away from our LB's - an improving force last year - and putting him on the DB's.
On that note, why not scheme around two of your best defenders' strengths: 47 lining up outside and Countess in more zone coverage? Are the two not compatible?
I am no expert, but it seems that Ryan was far, far more effective on the outside edge. Maybe Morgan's injury has screwed it all up, but I'd rather have him creating havoc and Bolden, who looks pretty solid insofar as tackling, in the middle. Which I guess leaves Ross on the other side, a bit scary yes, Ross with Bolden as cover. Charlton looks sometimes like an LB on the end.

Crazy warm today, 1 Celsius, which is 34 in farenheit, google tells me. Brady would be loving it shortsleeved here I am sure.
Friday however was -30 before the wind, -22 for y'all. Brady would have been in the booth with Borges.

Good luck and all the best thoughts and prayers this holiday season and beyond - to you and all suffering from this awful, awful disease.
We have an ongoing battle with cancer at home, my wife is absolutely tremendous. Her strength, determination and fight make her a true hero. The kids know it. Inspiring. Lost too many people on both sides to this.
Never give up. Never.
|1 year 2 weeks ago||It so rarely works well||
at places that do this.
Thought Indiana had us but they kept switching back to the 'passer', then when the injury happened we got the interception from a cold qb. Oklahoma too, their d is near elite but the o is predictable when one or the other qb is in.
The qb's need time with the line & receivers to get a rhythm, a feel for each other. Constant switching plus a young o-line is unfair to both the qb's and the line, who we need to exectue basic, simple stuff.
DG will be a monster if given time, and a couple of wideouts who can create separation in that improved pass pro time and pocket. Shane can watch and learn.
Worrying that so many think the offense will be basically the same next year unless there are radical changes (mass firings, high risk systems, etc.).
Q for the more coach-savvy: do you think OSU was a preview of our offense next year? Or does our new receiver corps / backfield / o-line experience dictate something different? Maybe a question for a different post...

We saw his great skill, and his drawbacks - too willing to take a sack and never throw it away; forcing pass into coverage; throwing behind people.
But each time he rebounded. What really stood out to me was his unwillingness to accept mistakes. When he got in Kalis' grill and screamed at Funchess for not turning around to the ball in the first half, he was making a huge statement to the team about leadership and accountability.
Amazed at his performance today. His tuck and run, deking out Roby for the first down in the 4th was absolutely amazing, considering he was minus a leg.
|1 year 3 weeks ago||Can't see OSU making it||
Great team, but they had to tee off on us today and they were a point better, 16 seconds to go. They'll drop points.
If the winner of Bama-Auburn wins the SEC champ it'll be them vs FSU.
I don't see OSU as better than Bama, FSU, or Auburn. They are an excellent team but as well as they ran the ball down their throats, we hung 40 on them and were a play away. They won't make it.
Course if they beat Sparty, then SCarolina gets into the SEC title game and wins, you have a situation...
|1 year 3 weeks ago||Great decision||
Bad looking play...thought if Gallon goes to the corner and we throw a fade, we're in.
But when Hyde fumbled I said to my wife, "We score, we go for two to win it." Nice to see that Brady was listening to me :)

OSU has a lot of pressure on them to perform and this is still The Game. They have to beat us like FSU beats on the ACC to have a shot of passing them in the BCS standings (assuming Alabama wins; even if Auburn does, how can you not put a 1-loss SEC team in the National Championship?).
We have no pressure on us but have no horses. I like our D, they will only get better, but the O gives them no cushion, consistently awful field poisition, little time to recuperate and turnovers galore.
It'll be a program-defining game alright...gulp.

We read books, not burn them.
But actually I always respected tOSU, intertwined with a rival-fuelled hatred. Woody punched the Clemson player, but also taught history and looked out for his players & staff, like Bo did. Bo coached there and was shaped by Woody.
Until Tressel, then everything changed - they became the win-at-all-costs SEC offspring. Clarrett, Smith, Pryor, Tressell - and gotta throw Gene Smith in there too. Smarmy, volatile, supremely irrational fanbase with a persecution complex despite being petted by NCAA / ESPN. Horrific and disgusting.

White numbers and letters, impossible to identify players. Full-grill black visors. Instead of a team dance, we'll roll around in the mud for 20 minutes before kickoff.
It'll ease the 65-3 beatdown we'll be on (57 yarder by Wile after we have 1st and goal from the two).
Al will wear a canary glow-job MBB uni from last year, singlet and all. Forced to 'stroll' the sidelines. Brady will wear a wrestling uni.

Was great to see a lot of the kids getting a lot of time today. Green and Smith especially.
And winning, fancy that. Winning feels great. Had major reservations about this game, especially when we can't run, they run the option and the weather.
On to Iowa!

Thoughts, prayers, good vibes, etc. from Montreal. Here's to a brilliant recovery.
|1 year 6 weeks ago||We can't beat Ohio State this year||
Unless there are some major star alingments, injuries, etc. Urban has that program humming beautifully and they are in excellent shape; we've got RR recruiting issues, playcalling issues, and look sluggish and confused.
I am hoping the last four games serve as a real platform for next season, getting a W at Northwestern is the key. We need some confidence, it is hard to be aggressive when you don't know what you are doing (coaching or playing). Playing Ohio State tough and winning a bowl game would help tremendously.

My wife is also going through a battle with cancer, that was unbelievable - especially in the comparatively zero-importance of a collge sports website.

|1 year 7 weeks ago||The descent||
Lurked for quite a while, posted a bit, but now just lurk and have no wish to post (except now of course - oh the hypocrisy!). The PSU game reactions really struck me for their infantile absurdity and utter lack of thought, though it had been trending that way.
The RR end could be pretty nasty but the conversations generally came around to something looking like a quasi-reasonable debate, even if it ended in agreeing to disagree. It was interesting to read about other people's points of view; plus you could count on enough light-hearted stuff to keep perspective.
Now every thread seems to be reduced to a 'My-dad-can-beat-up-your-dad' level of argument, regardless of the topic. The message board is rapidly becoming maize and blue mirror of RCMB.
I read the articles here, Magnus' blog and Space Coyote's coaching threads at M&B, but after looking at a few message board posts to some of the topics am turned off by the mindless descent into thuggishness they become. I wish I could offer up a solution but don't know enough about it.
|1 year 28 weeks ago||Awesome||
My 6 year old girl serenades anyone here (Montreal) wearing UM gear with a (very loud) The Victors, drawing a multitude of amusing reactions. She is very much into the sports, but when I broke it to her that she wouldnt be playing beside Dernard at UM for various reasons, she has been set on making the basketball team.
Her finest moment came when she told a group of State fans we saw that she felt sorry for them after last years game. Then she walked away chanting "It's great - to be - ..."
The 18 month old girl, well, she loves her mini football and is rather aggressive. There is hope.

Used to follow closely, but can't stand watching it now, been off it for years. The diving, moaning, bitching, faking is all bad enough - but the Euro game is so heavily infused with overt and open racism, bigotry and xenophobia that it is a fundamental problem.

|1 year 38 weeks ago||Amazing story||
Sometimes when things are rough these stories can be wonderfully inspirational, knowing you are not alone with your struggles and there is a way - there is - to turn the corner.
Sports have always been important for me, but 2012 was an awful year and my daughter, wife and I (and our baby as well I think) have bonded, and in a big way over UM athletics.
Our baby was born with a 95%+ chance of having a severe mental condition but by some miracle was fine, took a while and a few test but last year the docs told us she seems alright.
Then the wife gets diagnosed with cancer. Surgery, which only revealed spreading. Now has finished chemo-rad. The treatment was hell, she was so flattened by it I was taking care of both kids while working and minding the household. Not out of the woods and we are nervously waiting for the next round of tests. Though she is very confident and feeling / looking great, I admit to being deeply concerned.
So UM football, and hockey, and now b-ball has made us come together. It gives us 'blank' moments when all of these problems evaporate and we can have fun watching, living the moment. My 6-year old is now determined to marry Dernard, go to UM, make it on the cheerleading and basketball teams. My wife wore my UM longsleeve proudly on Saturday.
Flying thank you for sharing this and opening up this thread, there is a way and determination and a relentless attitude will get you there. All the best to all of you.

Football has taken off in the city, because U of Montreal decided to take it seriously a few years back. Now it is the hottest ticket outside the Habs in the city by far. McGill is a beautiful campus & excellent school with a very old football tradition that they completely ignore. Too bad. Team brutal, gameday is like being inside a sealed tomb but with less atmosphere.
U of T is a big school. No way would they ever be able to handle a B1G athletic program. Schollies alone would ignite a national 'debate'. And no-one outside of Toronto would ever cheer for them.

Tbh everyone was sure Tinordi was going to be the first callup. Guess the brass likes what they saw lately (and he is tough). Plus Weber is abysmal and probably played his way off the team last night.
I'm not sure how much Greg will play - if at all - but after watching him last year, sure he had the size but I thought ECHL, maybe end of roster AHL because he couldn't skate. And there was the whole go back to school thing - though maybe Red and the Habs have some good insider relationships still going after all these years.
Anyway more UM here makes us a happy camper.

|1 year 46 weeks ago||Mixed feelings. One hand,||
One hand, Meyer comes off a smug c**t for looking like he's telling others how to do their jobs - especially as he's poaching players.
Other hand, he knows the conf should be doing better overall, and maybe wants to discuss strategies to bring them more in line with SEC attractions (pressuring for more night games a start). Knows if the conf is noticeably behind the SEC, tougher sell for him.
You can bet that whatever else Ole Miss did, they can sell playing in the SEC every week nicely. Thier exposure is through the roof.
Mark D'Antonio has no need of any advice from anyone, naturally.

Trestman did nothing much here that wasn't groundwork of others. Took an already loaded team to a few finals in an 8-team league where 6 make the playoffs. Won twice, once despite himself.
Didn't have to look at the D, it is the CFL. He walks into a nice o setup in Chi.
Not an epic disaster but doubt he will take Chi over any humps, particularly that green and yellow one in Wisconsin...

|2 years 37 weeks ago||Good stuff for your soccer fans||
The Impact here in Montreal were a minor league team - and very successful - for years. There was (and is) no promotion to the MLS; rather, they had to sell themselves to be accepted to the MLS (& have the right kind of stadium, soccer only).
There was a lot of wrangling and shenanigans - especially since the owner here is, er, 'connected' - but finally they played some sort of North-Central America cup games at the Olympic Stadium and drew 60,000 fans - for a minor league team, the MLS took notice and the negotiations went quick after that.
If DCFC does well, maybe they hold a couple of big-ticket games in the Silverdome and get into the MLS with big fan support there. Didn't they play WC games there with giant hexagonal pieces of real grass as the field in 94?

of fuck ups, yes.
I am hopng to get some Michigan shirt signed by Pateryn if he makes it up with us...that's the best thing I can say at this point of that deal.
|2 years 39 weeks ago||All those guys||
have played for the Habs except Pateryn. We've also drafted Bennett and apparently some slight interest in Trouba (though we suck so bad we will be too high up to justify drafting him). Also were in the mix for the last few seasons of a trade for Comrie...
Director of scouting Trevor Timmins loves the midwest US, is constantly getting players out of there. With the Red connection (2nd worst trade we ever made?), no surprise that the Habs have Michigan on their radar. I've heard Red and Gainey also get along very well.
Komisarek walked out on us for an extra 500,000k on top of 5mil from the Leafs (thank god, happy trails Mike!); Cammalleri was hastily traded mid-game when he 'dared' mention negative things about the crap management; Patches is having an amazing year, 30 goals; and Palushaj has yo-yo'ed between the bigs and the AHL. Doing very nicely the last 5 or 6 games though.
Pateryn might end up starting the year in the ECHL of all places, considering the depth we'll have in the AHL with junior players turning pro. But it is always great to add more Wolverines to the fold & if he can improve his skating and add just a bit of offensive awareness I ould think he has a very good shot at the NHL with the Habs, considering this is exactly the kind of player we've missed now for, oh, about 20 years or so.
|2 years 40 weeks ago||Took my 5-year old||
to a game last season, albeit not Michigan. She liked it, loved the cheerleaders, the band. Got a snack, stayed until halftime, she thought it was over and wanted to leave in any case.
They don't know about the scroe or whatnot until around 7 or 8. I'd wait until about 4 or 5. Always trips me out when I see people bringing babies to games of any sort, I have a 3-month old and wouldn't think about it. She'd be more interested in her own fingers anyway.
