| 22 weeks 1 day ago | So by your standards |
So by your standards we should delete all of the "highlight reel" plays made by our players. I mean, I sure hope the guys Hoke puts on the field have above average athleticism. Just say it was a nice dunk and move on. It DID display above average athleticism and so does all of the other highlight reels, that's why they're being highlighted. |
| 22 weeks 1 day ago | The OP said |
He never said "...because York can dunk he'll be a good WR." You do agree that takes some above average athleticism, right? It's fine to post this video and it's fine to say "Damn, that's a nice dunk". To downplay this is being negative for no reason. It's ok to acknowledge a nice play without meaning this kid is going to be the best WR in Michigan history.
|
| 22 weeks 1 day ago | That was a sweet play |
It's too bad how negative and cynical the blog has gotten this year. If Blake Griffin did this, it would be one of the top plays on Sportscenter. yet everyone is downplaying it. Be excited for the future Michigan man, That was a nice steal, a great dunk over the top of someone and worth the watch. |
| 26 weeks 4 days ago | I don't know about carrying |
I don't know about carrying him off the field, but definitely give him the last knee to end the game. I know it will be extra dusty in the stadium if that happens. |
| 26 weeks 5 days ago | That's great but |
That's great but if you watch the games you can tell that our pass defense isn't that great. So many B1G QBs have missed huge opportunities to make big plays in the passing game. Our secondary has gotten beat repeatedly but the QBs are just missing. So what would I say? I would say thank you to the B1G QBs for being absolutely terrible at hitting wide open WR. |
| 26 weeks 5 days ago | I just want him to play |
I just want him to play in his last game at Michigan Stadium. Records are nice and you can always play the what if I wasn't injured game with records, but it would really be a bummer if that injury took him out of his last game at Michigan Stadium. That to me would be worse than not getting the records. |

Gotta have fun with it. I don't blame Bellomy for what happened on Saturday. It's what you expect from a RS Freshman in that environment, but we gotta be able to joke about it. It's my coping mechanism. |

| 38 weeks 8 hours ago | One thing to consider |
One thing to consider, most first-time mothers go past their expected due date. My wife went 2 weeks (!) past her due date and then she finally went into labor after quite a bit of work on our part. Tell your wife to lay low and not to do much, go enjoy the game. You'll be fine. Okay, two things to consider.. Here is the second.. most first time mothers labor goes longer than 7 hours. If the drive is 7 hours, you should be able to make it back in time. Granted my wife's entire labor was 5.5 hrs with our son, but I said *most* first time mothers. Seriously. Enjoy the game! |
| 39 weeks 5 days ago | Couldn't agree more |
Couldn't agree more with this... I'm pulling my hair out with all of the schedule comments. A pre-season ranking is ranking the teams ability, not what their record might be. Let's take the USA Today Preseason Poll:
1.LSU
2.Alabama
3. Southern California
4. Oklahoma
5. Oregon
6.Georgia
7. Florida State
8.Michigan
9. South Carolina
10. Arkansas
11. West Virginia
12. Wisconsin
13. Michigan State
14. Clemson
15. Texas
Do we think Michigan is worse than SC, Arkansas (John L!) and West Virginia? I don't. I think 8 is about right. I actually agree with Yahoo! more with #6. I think we're better than Georgia.
I would put us #7. Move Florida St. up to #6, and drop Georgia to #8. |
| 39 weeks 5 days ago | I get the team thing |
I get the team thing, but come on Jeremy, just pick one guy who is the toughest to block! I'm just going to take this as our defensive players are equally great and they're all extremely hard to block. And in reply to your kid, just use it as a teaching moment. On the inside, be proud your son can beat up a kid but teach him why it was wrong in this case and why stealing is wrong. Not to hijack, but Greg Mattison and Brady Hoke were on a local West Michigan sports radio station this morning, if anyone is interested. You have to listen to the ever annoying Ray Bentley, but its fun normal fluff stuff from the coaches. | 42 weeks 12 hours ago | If he can handle |
Agreed its best to safe than sorry, but if he can handle that weight for reps, then I don't see the need to think about touching the bar until the last rep. If this a 1RM, then yeah, maybe... Barwis is a stud regardless and obviously knows what the hell he is doing. More than me, that's for sure. |
| 42 weeks 13 hours ago | Damn |
Damn, that was impressive. Graham is a beast. Miss that guy. What is also impressive is that he is giving out complimentary barbell rows while benching 500lbs (get your damn hands off the bar, Barwis!) |

| 44 weeks 4 days ago | That's no excuse |
That's no excuse. With the resources brought forth by the internet, budget is no excuse. Maybe I'm different, but if I were a football coach, I'd make the personal investment to learn about strength training. There are dozens of really good books available for under $30, not to mention training DVDs. The return on that investment is huge for both parties, the coach and the kids.
|
| 44 weeks 4 days ago | That's sad that |
That's sad that one guy is limiting the potential of the athletes at your school by not allowing them to learn proper form to get everything out of their lifts and their efforts in weightlifting. I get angry at the thought of the potential of lost power and force for your football players. Maybe that special ed teacher needs a "special" visit. |
| 44 weeks 4 days ago | Agreed. In my opinion |
Agreed. In my opinion, lifters shouldn't be attempting a max lift until they have been lifting with proper form for at leaast 6 months. Anyone high schooler shouldn't care about their max lift until they've invested a good amount of time gaining strength. Who cares if you can squat 225 lbs for one rep. Squat for 6 months with a proper form and then give it a go. A max squat of 315+ for a high schooler is far more impressive, but that kind of strength only comes with a time investment of lifting with proper form.
It's sad that high school athletic departments don't focus on teaching high schoolers proper form before letting them into the gym to lift. They're just asking for injuries. |
| 44 weeks 4 days ago | The good Crossfitters |
The good Crossfitters stress form more than weight, but a quick search on Youtube for Crossfit fail will show that not all of Crossfit stresses form over weight. Those are some impressive numbers though! Keep up the strong work! |
| 44 weeks 4 days ago | Starting Strength |
I'm currently in the middle of a linear progression program by Mark Rippetoe called Starting Strength. I lift 3 days a week and focus on powerlifts, Squat, Bench, Shoulder Press, Deadlift and Barbell Row. I love it. If you haven't looked into, I highly recommend it.
I'm 6'0/193lbs and just set a new PR for my Squat of 315lbsx2.
I love lifting. Right now I'm going for strength. Once I hit my strength goals, I'll flip over to maintenance mode of keeping my strength but improving body composition. A lot like the CrossFit posters, I spend a lot of time focusing on proper form as well.
I also really get into pairing my strength training with the Paleo diet. Any other paleo fans?
Also, I recommend reading 70sbig.com. It's one of my favorite weight lifting blogs.
Edit: Thought I'd embed my squat from today.
|
| 44 weeks 4 days ago | Squats |
With proper form, your knees should be fine with barbell squatting. I'd recommend looking into Mark Rippetoes instructions on how to properly squat. I have a bad knee from a quadding accident and I can squat all day without knee pain. Now putting bodyweight on my bad knee is a different story. I do any Tebowing without falling over in pain. |
| 44 weeks 4 days ago | Squats |
If you have proper form, Squats shouldn't trash your knees. And of course, you should never go for big weights if you can't complete a rep with proper form. |
| 45 weeks 2 days ago | These are more like |
These are more like Laquon Treadwell highlights than Shane Morris highlights. Treadwell looks so good. Man would I love for him to Go Blue. I do like how Shane doesn't try to force it like Hackenberg kid does. Morris checks down to the RB if nothing is there, even in 7v7. |
| 45 weeks 4 days ago | Wow.. |
Wow... If you're going to make a nickname stick, you should probably apply it to the right person. Quon is no where in Leon McQuay's name. McQuay is a Safety. Laquon Treadwell has Quon is his name, and he is a WR, which would resemble the play on Megatron. Do you see how MegaQuon is not at all Leon McQuay? |

It's not a good fit because the kid didn't commit immediately? I'm not really sure why you're so convinced this isn't going Michigan's way. Have we been so spoiled with this class that kids we're recruiting aren't allowed to go through the recruiting process now? |

| 46 weeks 6 days ago | So, it's everyone else's fault |
So, it's everyone else's fault that you have no self control? It's not that hard to DVR the game, power off your iPad, iPhone and any other form of technology that may or may not make you aware of the score until you get home and can start the game. My cousin got married on the UTL game last year. I DVR'd the game, told everyone around me that I will punch them in the face if anyone told me the score, dodged the douche bag DJ announcing the score and made it home to watch the game in its entirety. I enjoyed the crazy finish as if I was watching it live, even though I was 3 hours behind the rest of the world. THAT was a real pain in the ass, but I didn't blame my cousin for getting married on that day. I did what every Michigan fan should do in that situation.. Man up and make it happen. If you're commited to it, you can avoid hearing the score and watch the game in its entirety. Have a little self control and commitment fergodsakes. Besides, it's one game. Stop whining. |

You wear your shoes during the entire game at home? I wonder what Herm would have to say about that... For me its: Alabama I don't think we have much of a shot here, but it will still have me pacing for the 3 quarters or so. MSU We need to win that game to shut up the idiots at my work. I'm so sick of hearing from them. Nebraska I don't like the idea of playing at Nebraska, even though I don't see how they closed the gap competition wise with us this year compared to last year. Ohio It's The Game.

| 1 year 26 weeks ago | Scheelhaase audible |
When Scheelhaase made that audible I immediately hit rewind and pointed out to the people I was watching with that Scheelhaase just got Mattison'd. Do you think Scheelhaase thought everyone was going to drop into coverage and that the dive play would work like it did in the ND game? That was my interpretation. The guys I was watching with were wondering if after Scheelhaase audibled, did the defense then check and switch to base? I didn't see any evidence of the defense making a check, but rather staying with the original play call. Great play calling by Mattison all day. And thanks for the recap. I look forward to these every week. |

| 1 year 27 weeks ago | Sorry man |
But I won't be happy with a win like that. I want a convincing win and prove that we're a good football team. I'm tired of that sinking feeling of watching games and questioning if we're a good team or not. Michigan Football doesn't win 67-65. Michigan Basketball does. |
| 1 year 27 weeks ago | Double digit win |
I expect a double digit win on Saturday. I expect this team to respond to last week and prove that they're a good football team that can win on the road and win games they're supposed to win. I expect them to be focused early and ready for this game and not wait until the 4th quarter. That is what I expect. Will that happen? Let's hope so. |

| 1 year 28 weeks ago | I'm glad you made the comment |
I'm glad you made the comment about Gardner at the end. I said the same thing when watching the game live. It's a simple mistake, can be corrected with more reps and playing time, but it proves the point that it isn't necessary to pull Denard. Dendard made some really nice throws in key situations on Saturday. I'm fine with Denard throwing 14 times in a game, as long as he is converting those key 3rd downs (obvious passing situations), like the 3rd and 20 bomb (even though it was underthrown). As other comments mentioned, Denard at QB makes the offense better because the defense has to key in on him, even if he is faking an end around. |

| 1 year 28 weeks ago | I'm not sure about you |
I prefer to leave the ESPN/CBS politics out of it. I don't have all day to watch all the games. I'm not sure about you, but I only flip to other games when the main game I want to watch is on commercial, so I could really care less about having two high caliber games on at once. I'm perfectly satisfied with Kansas St vs Oklahoma St as the alternate for the 8pm game. I think the LSU vs Alabama game is going to be awesome. I could care less about the mid-day games since I normally have stuff to do between a noon game and the night game. I could really care less about what other games are on in the same time slot as the Michigan game. Do you really sit down and watch all the games from Saturday to where this is really bothering you? |

| 1 year 29 weeks ago | I completely disagree |
I completely disagree that Michigan is a "winnable" game for Purdue. Call me a slappy, but I just don't see that at all. How do you see Michigan as a winnable game for Purdue? Match up wise, Michigan is far better than Purdue, especially coming off of a bye. To me, their winnable games are Iowa and Indiana, only because Iowa is at home for Purdue. |
| 1 year 29 weeks ago | Every conference has |
Every conference has two bottom feeders that are "easy conference wins". The trend is to schedule "easy warm-up" games before conference play starts, which means the average team is guaranteed 4-5 wins each season. That results in the fact that they only need one upset win to make a bowl. I think it speaks more to the fact that 6 wins is way too low in order to make a bowl rather than the state of the B1G. I do agree there are way too many bowls. 7 or 8 wins seems right to me, which would lower the number of bowl games. It also forces more than just that one "upset" or "lucky" win (however you want to view a game like Illinois last week for Purdue) in order to make a bowl. Purdue should have beaten Rice. Then they're at 5-2. Purdue will beat Indiana (the other bottom feeder aside from Minnesota), which would give them 6 wins if they beat Rice. They won't win any of their next 4 games, which means they finish at 6-6, which in my opinion isn't worthy of a bowl game. The B1G is down yes, but an average team like Purdue wouldn't make a bowl this year if it was at 7 or 8 games, because the B1G is good enough to prevent them from winning more than 4 out of the 8 B1G games. |
| 1 year 29 weeks ago | Would love to see |
Would love to see Fitz and Smith get 100+ each in this game, let Denard pick up 50 yards or so. Looking at the film, it seems that Fitz will be the better back against this Defense with the room they provide, he should be able to use his moves and speed. I really like Allen at CB for Purdue. I watched that Illinois game and he was very solid and I remember him being solid last year. I agree that we need the running game to show up because Denard will need to be accurate against these corners, especially Allen. |

The Ref even pulled out his flag!! That was the worst non-call. |
| 1 year 31 weeks ago | 24-14 |
I think Michigan gives up a 1st quarter TD and a 4th quarter TD, but shuts them out in the 2nd and 3rd. Our offense gets rolling in the 2nd half and we win 24-14. Yes, I'm predicting Gibbons makes a late FG |
| 1 year 32 weeks ago | I look at what Auburn |
I look at what Auburn did with Nick Fairely and Nebraska with Suh. I think if you have one athletic really big guy, you can really do damage vs B1G teams and faster teams from out of conference. |
| 1 year 32 weeks ago | Maybe they switched |
Maybe they switched the jersey fitting to see if the defense wouldn't be able to tackle Fitz by streching his jersey for 10 yards like Minnesota did, but of course, Fitz never really gave them a chance to try to catch him from behind. |

| 1 year 33 weeks ago | And save it for big games |
In addition to putting it on the tickets, save it for big games, not games on BTN or against opponents who can't beat high school teams. Oh well. |
| 1 year 33 weeks ago | Touchdowns outside the red zone |
One thing I noticed this year compared to last is the difference in touchdowns allowed outside of the red zone, and the other comments are getting to the same point. We're not allowing those big plays in the passing game this year by having guys around the ball and better tackling. Through 4 games in 2011: 1 passing touchdown for over 20+ yards
Through 4 games in 2010: 3 passing touchdowns for over 20+ yards
I would argue that the 2011 schedule has much better passing teams than the 2010 schedule did through 4 games, and yet we have yielded less TD passes for over 20+. It seems to me that our tackling, having players around the ball at all times is helping reduce the number of big pass plays, in addition to not allowing the QB to have all day to get a deep ball. The real test is yet to come, but this is encouraging to me. |
| 1 year 34 weeks ago | My hope for tomorrow |
My hope for tomorrow and entering the B1G season is that this defense is starting to show that they're not the same defense that will give up 35 pts to a 2010 Indiana team, or 33 to a 2009 Indiana team. They shut down Eastern Michigan, they handled a good SDSU team. They're showing that they're a defense that could keep us in games. I can't see this defense allowing Minnesota to come in on Saturday and put us in an offensive shootout like we did with the 2009 and 2010 Indiana. Same goes with Northwestern. I don't see us getting into defensive trouble in that game either. I agree that we need Denard to start hitting his receivers, and hitting them early in games. Our defense might be able to keep us in games for a while, but until the passing game starts clicking, I don't know how long we will be able to stay in games being one dimensional. I'm hopeful for 6-0 heading into the scum of the earth on Oct 15th. |
| 1 year 34 weeks ago | I agree |
I agree that it just seems like a really good play. The only way I could see Ryan playing this any better is to read that fake a little faster and get that edge pressure like Brian mentioned, but man, to me, that seems like you're asking a whole heck of a lot from your players. I'm satisfied with Ryan's play here. He still applies some pressure, where if the QB didn't have a man to throw to, Ryan is there for a sack or at least forcing the QB to throw it out of bounds or run out of bounds. If Ryan is expected to recognize plays and react as fast as Brian is mentioning, it's only confirming the fact that I never would have made it on any football squad and I have been doomed to fan status since the beginning of time. |
| 1 year 35 weeks ago | Darrelle Revis does both |
Darrelle Revis does both. I went to find evidence of what the "Best" CB in the NFL does, and it's a mix, and I believe it has to do with what Magnus said. If they can keep up with the WR, they should turn their head when they see the anticipation, but if they don't feel like they can keep with them, then just keep your back turned. See highlight video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyCfGHgc6eg&feature=player_detailpage#t=27s
Revis vs Ochocinco (Johnson), he keeps his backed turned most of the time, but in other highlights in this same video, he turns his head. I'm sure it has to do with confidence vs WR and since our CBs got torched last year, I imagine their confidence isn't very high. |
| 1 year 35 weeks ago | I don't think it changes anything |
I don't think it changes anything but it was the RT who comes out to get Hawthorne on the first video, the Center gets Roh. Either way, Hawthorne still gets eaten up and I don't think it matters who got him, unless he is supposed to be reading what the OL is doing. I don't know enough about D to know if it makes a difference. |
| 1 year 35 weeks ago | Thanks for these |
Thanks for dilligently posting these. I love being able to watch the press conferences every week from Mattison. After hearing Mattison say he wouldn't have called that play again in that end-game situation, and after seeing what the Picture Page Post showed on the Kovacs INT with that one WR wide open, I'm curious to see if Mattison calls that play again against EMU, and if he does, how the players execute it after watching the film back. I can only imagine with this staff that if they run that play again, the players will have learned from their mistakes. I could listen to Mattison talk all day. What a great coach. |
| 1 year 35 weeks ago | I'm glad you did |
I'm glad you did, I like to go back and watch what went wrong and see the adjustments the coaches and players make as the game goes on. Great job on the vidoes man. I love being able to watch these back online. |
| 1 year 36 weeks ago | I'm torn |
I'm torn because at first I say I want the Irish to win, just to knock MSU fans down, since we already beat ND, I don't care who ND beats from here. I hate MSU more than ND. But then I think, I want MSU to be undefeated (if they can get through that team in Ohio) when they play us, which would be nice for us to beat them if we're both undefeated at that time. That would be fantastic. So then I lean towards MSU. In the end, I simply cannot root for MSU, so I'd have to say ND. |
