What's our bowl game losing…

What's our bowl game losing streak now? 6?

Are you suggesting that

Are you suggesting that Harbaugh is somehow subject to laws of spacetime continuity like the rest of us chumps?

Come on, man.

War is hell.

War is hell.

Were you named after the Were you named after the Frieze Memorial Organ?
Nicholas Cage plays a very Nicholas Cage plays a very good loser. He was excellent in Adaptation too.

What human endeavor is not at least somewhat semen related, after all?

Cal, though I don't follow

Cal, though I don't follow them that closely in recent years. There was a time when I followed both teams about equally, but it got a little exhausting needing to watch two full games every fall Saturday.

Wouldn't even be a fair

Wouldn't even be a fair fight, honestly. Your dad's a beast.

Because neither of those

Because neither of those games were on the NES.

Pretty sure an Atari

Pretty sure an Atari equivalent of this has been on the market for years, too.

No, I don't believe it will

No, I don't believe it will take old cartridges or have any means of expanding beyond the 30 built-in games.

Oh yeah! I forget about CJ

Oh yeah! I forget about CJ Anderson since he really wasn't that productive in college. I guess Cal was too hard on the decline at that point for him to have the same opportunity the four I mentioned had.

Best was probably the second

Best was probably the second most fun to watch player I've seen (after Denard, obviously). Like Denard he was so much faster than everyone else that once he got past the linemen, there was a good chance he was going to score no matter where on the field they were. It seemed he was good for a 70+ yard run at least once a game.

Cal really had an impressive run of RBs in the late 00s: Marshawn Lynch, Justin Forsett, Jahvid Best, Shane Vereen. I don't think Vereen has been a starter in the NFL but he's played a decent amount.

He was also the only known

He was also the only known person to ever escape from the belly of a Sarlacc, at least until Disney scrapped the expanded universe.

A little over 4 years. Unlike

A little over 4 years. Unlike postage stamps, presumably the data is traveling at the speed of light.

What part of the post was too

What part of the post was too much for you? The percents?

What exactly was the problem

What exactly was the problem with their use of affect?

Yup. I mean he has basically

Yup. I mean he has basically admitted that he did it. There was that book he wrote, "If I Did It" I think, in which his attempt to pretend to be speaking hypothetically lasted for about a half page.

As I see it the problem with

As I see it the problem with this kind of service is that you still need high speed internet access, and for now that is pretty much exclusively coming from the cable companies. The cable plans are already set up so that getting just internet without cable is a bad deal (it's usually cheaper but not that much cheaper).

So few people will truly be able to ditch their cable company at this point. At current prices cable internet + Playstation Vue will probably be more expensive than cable internet + cable, and probably less reliable.

Umm, Kylo Ren seemed like a Umm, Kylo Ren seemed like a whiny teenager because that's precisely what he's supposed to be.
I find it funny that people complain on the one hand that VII was derivative and on the other that, basically, the new villain isn't enough like the old one.
It might depend a little bit

It might depend a little bit on the discipline, but in most cases I'm aware of, it's no different since you will satisfy all requirements for the Masters in the process of earning the Ph.D.

Having a Ph.D and a Masters (in the same field) should be looked on as no more prestigious than having only the Ph.D.

But as others said below, I think 5-7 years is typical in a lot of fields, but in some (especially humanities), 7-10 is closer to the norm.

I have the same thing

I have the same thing happening on both Chrome and Firefox. As someone else noted, you can solve this problem by making the browser either sufficiently wide or sufficiently narrow. However, at least on my 13.3" screen, "sufficiently wide" is wider than the screen itself, and "sufficiently narrow" is also rather unnaturally narrow.

What are the chances that

What are the chances that Gary lines up at RB at least once in his Michigan career?

US News rankings are justly

US News rankings are justly criticized, but the larger point that UC Berkeley is widely considered the top public university in the US is still true. This is also the case in the QS rankings (which also rank UCLA above UM).

(Interestingly, in QS, UVa falls far down the list at 172, even behind MSU at 164.)

Come on, guys. Just as nobody

Come on, guys. Just as nobody may ever again mention Jim Tomsula without making a fart joke, you can't bring up Justin Wilcox without the gif.

I guess you had it really

I guess you had it really hard, except that the <$5/hr you made with that job has increased at a rate a little lower than inflation, while tuition has increased at a rate many times that of inflation.

The numbers: from 1991 to today,

  • minimum wage has increased by 70%
  • cumulative inflation has increased 74%
  • college tuition & fees has increased 338%

Nowadays you can work fulltime year round in a minimum wage job and earn just barely enough to cover instate UM tuition & fees. Forget living expenses. And that's 40 hours a week, 50 weeks a year, so it's not like going to school is going to work out in that extreme situation anyway.

I went to school in the late 90s. I had it far easier than students today, and like it or not, so did you.

I have one sort of similar to

I have one sort of similar to Ace's story, but this was a serious, ongoing, longterm relationship. If I were to make this into a long story instead of a short one, you would understand that this isn't so much a "worst breakup" as a "most hilariously apropos breakup".

I had been dating this girl for about 5 years. During the last year she was working in a different city about an hour away. One week I was coming to her city for work reasons and we said if possible we'd get lunch. We hadn't made definite plans, so that day when I called and found she was at the airport on the way to Singapore, I wasn't perturbed. It was a little odd she hadn't told me she was going, but it wasn't unusual for her to travel abroad for work. About a week later, I get an email: "Umm...remember when I was at the airport? Actually, I was moving to Singapore."

Never spoke to her again, although she tried to get back in touch a few times and moved back to the US about a year later. Totally cutting off contact was probably the best relationship move I ever made.

I'm too young to have been a

I'm too young to have been a fan in the 70s, but I've been a big fan of his earlier output for years. I was aware of him growing up but a decade or so ago I felt kind of bored with the music I had, and looking for something new, decided to educate myself on the music of the 70s. Really getting to know David Bowie completely blew me away.

I never really paid much attention to his more recent stuff. But after hearing the news (and yep I got it from mgoblog first) I listened to the new album a couple times and watched the two videos. The album is fantastic from start to finish, and the two videos are superbly creepy and haunting.

It's amazing that he had the capability to foresee his own death and put out such a moving statement on it in a way that is so clearly recognizable as uniquely his own style.

This is exactly what should

This is exactly what should happen. I don't care in the slightest if there are sub-.500 teams playing in bowl games. What annoys me is the fact that schools are submitting to a system that rips them off year after year. They have the power in this. If the NCAA would just say this is how it's going to work, that's what would happen.

Unfortunately the NCAA doesn't exist to represent the schools and the athletes, it exists to make money off them.

Watching that attorney, I

Watching that attorney, I couldn't stop thinking of William H. Macy's character from Fargo.

I saw above that Partridge

I saw above that Partridge has coached LB's in the past. But do we know where his specialty lies (if he has one)? I mean, he was a high school head coach before. But is he primarily a defensive guy? Is LB his primary position, or could he also do DB or DL? Is offense out of the question?

I don't know much about the

I don't know much about the incident that got him fired at USF, and I'm not a defensive schematic expert. But I remember that when Leavitt was at USF, if I noticed a USF game was on, I would usually watch it, because they were a really fun team to watch. Having no connection to the school or the area, I always rooted for them just because I liked watching them.

I'd be very happy with the hire if this happens. The guy was an excellent head coach, probably top 20 or even top 10 in his time, so to get him as an assistant would be a deal. The choking incident is a black mark, but as long as the university looks at the details and feels confident it won't be repeated in any way, I think that's some baggage we can tolerate.

This is the one that bothered

This is the one that bothered me the most as well. The Peppers PI was bad too, but I can understand getting calls wrong on the field. Unless I've completely misunderstood the rule, this seems to me to be the clearest case of targeting I've seen all year. The guy launched himself, headfirst, into Rudock's head. If that was missed on the field, okay. But it wasn't, and the replay guys apparently thought it was undeniably *not* targeting? Hard to believe.

I agree that the gif is

I agree that the gif is hilarious, but I have no idea why. It's just a dude in a suit with a pizza giving a thumbs up.

Yeah, I really don't see a Yeah, I really don't see a problem with a coach saying we've got another kid at your position who is ready to commit, so we'd rather have you but if you're not ready to make a decision then we have to let him take your spot. It's unfortunate but there's nothing sleazy about it, if that was what we're supposed to conclude from the story.
Another enticing stat

Another enticing stat courtesy of ESPN:

The last time a team has had two 28+-point shutouts against AP-ranked teams: 1966.

ESPN lists four times this happened between 1945 and 1966. Of those four teams (including 1948 Michigan), three went on to win national championships.

Did BTN just say the first Did BTN just say the first FBS to record three straight shutouts since 1995? Now consider that two of those three were against top 20 opponents. Man, this team.

This is true. The picture of

This is true. The picture of the ID is actually linked on the guy's UNLV homepage. So it's not like it's classified information. It's just a really confusingly random thing to put in the post.

I'm wondering this too. I

I'm wondering this too. I thought maybe I was missing a joke and he had been in the news lately for some amusing reason, but all a quick Google turns up is that he's an adjunct professor in engineering, and apparently a pretty well-liked one judging from ratemyprofessors.com. Can't imagine it's his picture either as it's completely normal.

I'm not offended, I just don't get it. Still thinking I must just be out of the loop.

Low real estate prices?

Low real estate prices?

Apparently in your world,

Apparently in your world, sports are the only profession in which pre-hire training could conceivably happen somewhere other than in a university setting?

I don't see why starting out

I don't see why starting out with an incredibly ambitious dream that didn't fully pan out apparently makes the entire endeavor of a college education meaningless to you. That's a rather depressing view of education, because that happened to almost everyone. Few of us didn't initially have our hopes set a bit higher than where we ended up, and frequently in an entirely different direction.

No, the best 1.5% of high

No, the best 1.5% of high school future-math-majors attending UM do not get scholarships, and stipends, and can hold jobs in addition to school.

I also really don't like

I also really don't like all-white uniforms. Or unicolor uniforms in general. But whatever, as long as good football is being played, I'll dig deep and find a way to deal with it.

The internet says it's Meskel

The internet says it's Meskel Square in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

NCAA 14 on PSN

Since people were mentioning NCAA 14, I thought I'd pass along the fact that the PS3 version of the game is on sale this week on the PSN Store for $7.49.

(That's a digital copy, of course, so no rad Denard box art.)

Just curious, why "MNC"?

Just curious, why "MNC"? Wasn't the M for "mythical" used because the champion was not being determined by a tournament?

I believe the correct figure I believe the correct figure is a harbillion.
