Welll...I could really hear birds being flipped out there. Johnny did a tremendous job with his finger placement.

Tough break for the kid...as for the team (for which I feel infinitely less sympathy), their offense will still function against bad teams if Braxton is out but will struggle against better teams...hopefully so bad they miss Joe Bauserman...

Shane Morris is so fast that if Nuss had him running the option in Hurricane Katrina, Mike Valenti wouldn't even be mad.

Sorta surprised Nebraska is ranked after their injuries, and they were hardly dominant last year. I guess that's the power of the cat...

If the only person (I can't bring myself to use the term journalist) writing about the coming game was Drew Sharp, I wouldn't be that concerned. What is much more potentially annoying is the SportsCenter endless loop. If Vincent Smith received a dollar for every time one particular highlight was played, he probably could buy an NFL franchise.

I'm sure when he was taking out a string of nice loaner cars (from boosters if memory serves), he was thinking about his mom the whole time.

I really hope Holgorsen's next move is to bring his pet ferret to practice.

Fair enough...if memory serves, he got bounced between those two positions multiple times. That was the gist of the comment, not the fact that he played two positions. Also, he wasn't playing offense for a bit out of personal preference and then playing out of position another like Cam Gordon.

I wonder what is driving the move to RB/slot--ability, numbers at each position, the player's preferences, something else? I have no idea, but I do hope he doesn't capture the James Rogers trophy for most position switches...

At least that is where the NCAA can cap it...if there is an appetite to cap it, especially amongst the newly autonomous Power 5 conferences.
It will be interesting to see how schools deal with holding money in trust, and whether NCAA rules will even regulate how much and on what terms a school may hold money in trust for a student.

Or it could be that it is hard for a recruiting site to evaluate the mental side of things, and while Kalis may be physically ready he had some adjusting to do on the mental side, and the change in scheme did not help.
I have no inside information on the actual reasons, but I would imagine that it is not uncommon that certain physically mature players who could handle a more basic HS playbook have more trouble both with the more complex college playbook (and Borges was nothing if not complex) AND more complex college defenses.

One way to attract top up and coming talent is to support them as they move on to bigger and better things. I don't know what goes on behind the scenes, but I don't remember any writers getting publicly flamed on the way out either.

Memory (confirmed by a quick check) says he was a four star on Rivals--glad even though his Michigan career didn't include big stats that he is finding success in the league. And yes, I think a kid who registered few stats at a non-O-Line position that makes it onto practice squads is finding success.

Because they really depend on the expectations of the AD. On one hand, Nebraska fired Frank Solich for going 9-3 (and, ironically, how many years in a row has Bo Pelini gone 9-4). On the other hand, Purdue fans might storm the field if they finished the regular season 9-3. Of course, coaches (at least in some conferences) get fired for bad behavior too, but record-based firing varied greatly by school.

I don't known California civil procedure all that well but I suppose he could seek an emergency stay from the appellate court. If the appellate court does not grant a stay pending appeal, though, he will be reduced to haggling with his (ex?)wife over sale proceeds rather than ownership of the team.

Color me a bad Michigan fan, but I did not know that about Yost's time. However, now that you have brought it to my attention, Michigan's record in those years does lose some luster for me. Not saying it was tainted or that others (or the university) are wrong to celebrate it--just a personal opinion. I don't know enough about the NCAA to even know what sort of regulation there was supposed to be at the time, or whether the ringers were even nominally students (I infer from your comment they were not).
|4 weeks 2 days ago||I understand about hiring||
I understand about hiring ringers in the past; your point is well taken that perhaps I am romanticizing about an ideal that has never existed. Still, I am not sure I would enjoy watching a team I knew had a bunch of ringers, even if that was within the rules. Different strokes for different folks--it is a preference. I am under no illusion that student athletes today are really peers of non-athlete students, but the fiction and the attempt to make them at least somewhat so is what differentiates college from the pros for me. Whether this is rational or not is another issue...
|4 weeks 2 days ago||Thank you for answering||
Although I disagree personally with the overall approach you recommend, I see what you are getting at better with those responses. I think your answer to the first and second questions could easily be accommodated in the current NCAA construct. It is the third and fourth that would be significant departures from what the NCAA is today.

Because a "free market" in reality takes a significant amount of regulation to function properly.

How many players (including Michigan players, to be fair) have even busted for "undisclosed violations of team rules" and gotten slaps on the wrist? I am not diminishing how annoying it must have been to run stairs at the stadium at 6 a.m. or bring Lloyd cottage cheese at the crack of dawn but that's a lot different from a 12 month ban...
