Went to Cedar Point for…

Went to Cedar Point for their "Total Eclipse of the Point" event. They did an incredible job. I don't know how many they let enter, but it felt like little more than 1,000.  Admission included protective glasses and a very nicely designed lanyard. They had numerous themed activities, including adding cards to a "time capsule" to be opened at the next "Total Eclipse of the Point" in 2099, if I'm remembering the year correctly. Only a handful of rides were open, all near the park entrance. But they did the best they could with a skeleton crew. And the crew was exceptionally friendly. I was very impressed.

Totality lasted >3 minutes. Skies were perfect, and you could see the skies all around over the water. It was incredible. Best moment in Ohio without an M win.

Have tickets for the event…

Have tickets for the event at Cedar Point. In my defense, I feel Cedar Point juts into the lake, and pretty much all of the Great Lakes should be considered part of Michigan proper. I don't recognize a day at Cedar Point as actually spending a day in Ohio,.  Taking the back roads to get there, from Luna Pier, as mentioned by the OP.

It's because everyone here…

It's because everyone here hates you and wishes you would leave.

(points are down, so I'll take a moment and up my value in the jerk store)

More truth:

Brian sucks as a writer and I bet he doesn't really have an engineering degree from M.

JJ's girlfriend isn't very cute.

Irregardless should be a word.

The Tigers suck this year in spite of their start.

Ryan Day is underrated as both a coach and a human being.

Trump is a fine fellow and Biden is showing no signs of age.

I think that about covers it.

(Please may the points actually be down)

I joined the band in '83 and there were at least as many females as males. The only complaint I ever heard was the size of the women's restroom in Revelli Hall being inadequate, which was a relic of the band's makeup in the past.

From everything I saw in my five years in the band (I was a slow student), women had no issues. If anyone from that era can correct me, I would be interested to hear any anecdotes.

(not really worthy of #4, but it's a light-hearted local scandal for those old enough to remember)

Saw Mark Fidrych twice…

Saw Mark Fidrych twice myself that year. Once in a great win over Oakland, once in perhaps his worst outing against the Red Sox. Like you said, great memories. After the disaster year of '75, it was so great to have something to be excited about again.  I cooled on baseball as a kid after the strike season. Loved '84 and then Verlander, but it's never been quite the same as when I was young.

Those shareholders you…

Those shareholders you disdain just might include your hard-working neighbor next door, barely getting by, but with what little retirement he has invested in a mutual fund.

Don't be a classist.

"your debt can't follow you"…

"your debt can't follow you"

I trust you are being sarcastic, but many honestly feel this way.

We do all understand someone else has to pick up the debt we leave behind, correct? Perhaps "just bank shareholders," but said shareholders are, indeed, people. And for some of those shareholders we are talking about their retirement funds.

Oops! Apologies!

I meant "weirdos" in the most complimentary manner possible. East and West Engineering were "large tents" back in my day!

Surprised this wasn't posted earlier. Michigan has a fairly decent aerospace engineering department. I always thought they were the weirdos in the classrooms next door, but that's just me.

Oddly, I like this analogy. But I love me a good WWII flick.

Assuming the US and UK never existed, the pact between Germany and the Soviets would have gone swimmingly, had they agreed to simply get along. So which country is the B1G in this scenario?

That's more of a Freddie-ism.

I agree that the credit goes to the players. But they call it "home field advantage" for a reason. A strong fan base matters. I'll agree to 99.99% goes to the players/coaches.

1997 Iowa

Especially for Brian Griese, who had a miserable first half but had everyone behind him after halftime. I was at that game with my brother-in-law who, at halftime, said, "You know we're going to lose this game, right?"

It's always a delight to spend decades chiding your in-laws.

"Those of us who survived the 1995 Purdue “ice-rain” bowl know the truth."

Yep! I was there. I have been negbanged for saying this, with photos of the lower bowl providing supposed evidence to the contrary. But, no, we did not reach 100k that day.

Yeah, M has some professors…

Yeah, M has some professors who forwarded the art of "fuzzy math." It definitely forwarded the science behind current search engines, but let's not be too critical of others. I've been to a few games where actual people in the stadium didn't exactly match announced attendance.

I needed a bit of a diversion this morning, so I read about Bronko Nagurski.

Loved the story about him opening a filling station in a small Minnesota town later in life, and the local legend that he assured himself repeat business by screwing everyone's gas cap on so tightly that only he was able to loosen it again.

Seems like a good guy.

And, yeah, the Simpson's clip in the OP is cute.

Fellow engineer. I had to look up "subtile." I left feeling confused. Did you mean subtle?

I have three daughters. Two are engineers, one has two degrees in English Lit. I can communicate with all three, but one definitely takes more effort.

Believe it or not, I played trombone in the MMB. I have never played flute beyond making a few noises for fun (dated a flute player for a while). But I imagine if I picked up a flute tonight and worked hard, this is about how I would sound tomorrow afternoon.

My highest aspiration for myself has always been to have a plaque with my name on a urinal in the basement of the former West Engineering building.

So it's a bit beyond me to imagine how to honor someone who actually has mattered.
