is definitely my favorite. I personally prefer Highland and Speyside malts to the much more peaty Islay. Unfortunately, it's now going for something like $175/bottle? As a result I tried bourbons, but have since made my way over to ryes....

1 week 3 days ago Ender's Game is a great book

Well deserving all of its awards. I had heard they were making the movie, but didn't realise it was this close to release. I imagine the CGI had to catch up with the story to make it work. In the meantime, I would really love to see William Gibson's Neuromancer made into a movie....

is also one of the few credit cards that doesn't charge an exchange fee if you travel abroad. If you pay for something that is 10€, it will be $13.05 (the exchange rate at this exact moment) and that's it. I also like that they are really on top of any unusual activity regarding the use of your card.

A lovely place to be late December/early January. I can see either major stadium from my house....! I hate to say this, but during the recent dark age I was kinda hoping we would make the Insight Bowl.

5 weeks 1 day ago I personally find it worth it

...it is a nice morning ritual that takes less than 10 minutes once you get used to it. Part of the problem is in the past guys would learn from their fathers the proper way to shave, but this has gone by the wayside in this age of multi-blade cartridges and pressurized goo from a can. There are very few instances where men really take the time to take care of themselves, and this can be one of them. The Art of Shaving stuff is a nice gateway drug, but you will quickly move past it. You can even start with the brush, shaving soap, oils, etc. but still use your cartridge shaver; afterward you will at least want to get into a decent double-edged blade. That little smoke shop in the Nichols Arcade in Ann Arbor has a lot of that stuff. Some people go all the way to the straight edge razor with the strop and everything, but personally I think that is a bit too much. It was the invention of the double-edged razor blade and safety razor that got people out of the barbershops and into their homes in the first place. There is however, a really cool retro thing about the straight edge razor, just don't expect to be able to take it in your carry-on baggage!

Be aware, there is a learning curve to shaving properly, but there are also many resources (check out Mantic59 on YouTube, or the Badgers and Blades website) to get you going. The overall results, are really worth it.

5 weeks 1 day ago Shaving is a ritual

A little pre-shave oil
A dab of Truefitt & Hill Trafalgar on a silver-tip badger brush
Whip until in a frenzy of foam, apply hot with circular motion
A Merkur Futur razor with Feather blades, set at "3"
A total of three passes, applying new layers of foam at the end of each pass- with, across, then finally against the grain;
Ice cold water rinse, dabbing carefully
Apply some aftershave balm...ahh!!!!

But not shaving can be a ritual too.....RESPECT.

5 weeks 3 days ago The essence of shadenfreude

is in the reactions of fans who take all of this sports stuff a little bit too close to the heart- i.e., the very basis of their self-esteem is directly in correlation with the fortunes of their team. There is nothing wrong with laughing at the more outlandish examples, as long as we keep perspective and remember to laugh at ourselves- or at the very least win or lose magnaimously. In our current situation, just a few weeks ago we would have been very satisfied with making the Sweet Sixteen, and everything else since then should be taken as a glorious ride that came this close to ending in relative ecstacy. Not to mention boding well for the future- one day soon our preseason expectations will be to make the Final Four, with a strong possiblity of winning the whole thing. We have wandered in the wilderness a long time...

5 weeks 4 days ago I was going to drink champagne if we won

...and whiskey if we lost, But then I said "fuck it, I am proud of this team!" and popped the cork. They are everything to our University and I wish Trey a bright future in the NBA, while foreseeing a bright future for Michigan Basketball. Oh, and way to go, Spike!!

Hold your heads up and celebrate, as it has been said here before, "Sports!"

6 weeks 1 day ago I was at the annual hospital black-tie

event at a swanky hotel in Chicago the night of the semi-final vs Kentucky, me and several other UM grads were conspicuously absent for a major portion of the event, being up in someone's room drinking, shouting and watching the game. We caught a bit of shit from my department head for missing most of the event. Two night later, I was on obstetrics call as an anesthesiologist for the same hospital, watching the final as quietly as I could in my call room, with the double anxiety of the game as well as praying that I wouldn't get called for an epidural or something until after the game was over. So what happened? A STAT C-section, about 30 seconds before Webber walked (after rebounding the missed free throw- how come everyone else on the team was already up the court?), then called the timeout. Missed that last minute, and there was no way around it; even worse, spending the next hour in the OR not knowing how it turned out.....

6 weeks 2 days ago Thanks for freeing up my Monday night.

The universe is a cruel thing, and is not to be fucked with. Allow me to join the "TAKE THIS DOWN!!!!!!" chorus.

6 weeks 4 days ago Johnny Wangler had an ACL tear in the Gator Bowl '79

and was on the field that fall vs Notre Dame (though he couldn't run worth a damn). And that was 30 years ago medical science. Bellomy may be able to make it back in time to do a John Navarre imitiation.

6 weeks 4 days ago Shoot, stepping off a curb the wrong way

can result in an ACL tear. Or you can do it my way, make believe you are a black-diamond skier....

6 weeks 5 days ago I saw how he started to come down on the leg

on a news replay and just immediately closed my eyes. Thanks to everyone for not posting graphic pictures here! But yes, similar to Fitz's injury and he'll be up and about in no time, with good prognosis for recovery.
