The prospect of being…

The prospect of being personally deposed during discovery in litigation may cause some University Presidents, ADs and coaches to have second thoughts about provoking litigation.  There is nothing like the threat of a senior executive being asked questions by attorneys for the opposing party for hours with the answers being transcribed and potential legal consequences for lying to focus the mind.

PatsPulpit agrees Moody's audition before the Patriots' coaches made a strong impression:

"Moody was the main man for the West squad being responsible for all of their points and earning offensive MVP honors. He nailed a pair of 51-yard field goals - with room to spare - and later added two 35 yarders to put the game away. With New England potentially in the market for a kicker, the former Wolverine made a strong impression."

"Emerging is certainly what Uche is doing, as the third-year pro has now recorded 10 sacks over the last seven weeks (six games) of the season — the most in the NFL. After recording just one multi-sack game (and seven total sacks) in his first two NFL seasons, he now has three in his last five games."

"The duo of Uche (10.0) and Judon (14.5) became the first pass rushing duo in the league this year to eclipse the double digit sack mark. Uche credits a lot of his success to his counterpart."

Does Michigan get partial…

Does Michigan get partial credit for Devin Asiasi, who played his freshman year at Michigan before transferring to UCLA?

My wife and I informed both…

My wife and I informed both our daughters a few years before their respective graduations from high school that we would cover the equivalent cost of in-state tuition and incidental expenses including room and board.  My daughters then had to decide whether going into debt and/or finding financial aid to attend a more costly university was worth it.

They each looked at other universities, but chose to attend an in-state school.  They did well in college and graduated not only debt-free but with a nest egg from unspent savings.  Their costs were covered by MET and other savings for college, so this was not a financial burden for us as parents.

I appreciate not everyone is in a position to save a substantial amount for college, but we started saving when our daughters were infants and it worked for us.

In the fall of 2020, about…

In the fall of 2020, about 22% of the out-of-state applicants were accepted by U of M.  There were more than 50,000 out-of-state applicants.  Of those out-of-state applicants accepted, 28% enrolled compared to 70% of the in-state students accepted.  Michigan's out-of-state tuition is competitive with many peer schools and there are many more qualified applicants than U of M might accommodate.

The New York Times reported in a study of 27 highly selective public colleges that U of M ranked #1 in percentage of students (9.3%) from families in the top 1% of income and about 50% of students were from families in the top 10% of income.  Financial aid is available for students on a need basis.  About 40% of undergraduates receive some grant aid and 20% of students overall and 27% of in-state students pay no tuition.  There may be some financial pain to attend Michigan for many and there likely will be less expensive alternatives particularly for out-of-state students, but there is no compelling reason for U of M to reduce out-of-state tuition.

If there was a loophole for out-of-state students to reduce tuition at Michigan that was published on an open forum, one might expect out-of-state applications to rise and the percentage accepted to fall.  It is also likely administration at Michigan would promptly close the loophole to maintain funding. U of M does not make it easy for a non-resident to qualify for in-state tuition.  Attending a community college in Michigan for a year or two does not appear to change residency status for purposes of admission.

In 2019 (prior to the pandemic), Connecticut Women's Basketball had revenue of $4.5 million and expenses of $8 million.  Geno Auriemma with bonuses for making the Final Four makes over $2.5 million annually in a sport that runs a $3+ million deficit.  The Connecticut Athletic Department as a whole runs a deficit of about $40+ million annually.

In August 2019, Brady stated emphatically he had no interest in becoming a coach.  His continued success as a player and in his business ventures as well as his devotion to his family are unlikely to motivate him to consider coaching in the future.

"Brady was asked by reporters after Thursday's joint practices with the Titans in Nashville about one day squaring off against former teammate and Tennessee head coach Mike Vrabel on the sidelines, and the 42-year-old veteran quickly replied, "Oh hell no, I'm never coaching. Playing is enough for me."

"Onwenu's 926 snaps finished behind only the franchise-tagged Joe Thuney’s 979 on the Patriots.  His pass-blocking and run-blocking grades qualified for eighth among the NFL’s tackles while his offensive grade of 84.3 led all rookie linemen."

This is an auspicious beginning for the NFL career of this sixth round draft choice.

How about bringing Chris…

How about bringing Chris Partridge back as defensive coordinator to replace Brown?  At least we know he can recruit and has an eye for talent.  Partridge should take the lead to select the staff on defense to pack it with energetic, capable, creative assistants that are committed to recruiting and player development.

Replace Jay Harbaugh with Mike Hart as running backs coach.  Hart appears better equipped to identify, recruit and develop talent.  Hart might be groomed for a bigger and better role in the future.

Gattis might be granted one more season to deliver the promised speed in space scoring machine or he too is shown the exit.

Harbaugh needs to take a step back and cease micromanaging.

Yes, inadvertently the title…

Yes, inadvertently the title was posted before the body of the post.  I corrected the omission in the comment as soon as I realized my error.

"Pro Football Focus has him…

"Pro Football Focus has him graded at 89.4 so far this year, which is the second-best among all rookies at any position behind Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson. And then his 88.8. percent pass block win rate via NFL Next Gen Stats is the best among any guard in the league."

“Mike’s a hardworking kid,” Bill Belichick said recently. “He takes coaching well. Whatever you ask him to do, he tries very hard to do it and is a real smart kid that can correct mistakes and pick things up the second time around. … Just he’s a good football player and he’s shown the versatility to play two different spots, guard and tackle – which, in this league, as a rookie, different sides of the line, it’s really been impressive.”

As the ESPN article briefly…

As the ESPN article briefly mentions, there are factors other than Brady's performance that have contributed to the Patriots poor record.  It is not as simple as comparing current results to determine whether Brady or Belichick were more responsible for almost two decades of success by the Patriots.

The Patriots had a league high 8 players opt out due to COVID-19 concerns.  At least three of these opt outs (Hightower, Cannon and Chung) would have been starters.  As a result, the Patriots have much less depth than in 2019 and often suffer breakdowns due to inexperience and limited talent at key positions.

Against Buffalo, the Patriots had their best wide receiver (Edelman), perhaps their second best receiver (Harry) and all pro defensive back (Gilmore) inactive with injuries.  Edelman is now on the IR list.

The Patriots took a $13.5 million salary cap hit in 2020 due to Brady's departure.  Belichick recently stated that salary cap issues have limited the Patriots ability to add experienced depth.  Play has suffered as inexperienced players have been prematurely forced to start or play too many minutes.

Prior to a COVID-19 outbreak that caused the Patriots to lose almost two weeks of practice, the Patriots were playing better.  The combination of too many inexperienced players, limited talent and lack of practice has affected their play as a team.

How much better would the Patriots be in 2020 with Brady at QB?  Perhaps they would have won two more games.  The Patriots likely would have been worse than in 2019 even with Brady at QB.  To put the ESPN article in a different perspective, if Belichick had moved to coach Tampa and Brady stayed at New England, who do you think would have the better record?  Keep in mind the 2008 season when Brady was injured in the first game and Belichick coached the Patriots to a 11-5 record with Matt Cassel at QB.

Perhaps Brady saw the writing on the wall and selected a new team with a better offensive line, better defense and better receivers than the Patriots.  Tampa also had the salary cap space and better draft choices due to past mediocre performance to stockpile talent.

Congratulations to Brady on his present success and his ability to attract key players like Gronk and Brown to join him in a quest for another Super Bowl.

More details:

Onwenu played 100% of the offensive snaps at left guard (69 plays).  He also played 23% of the special team snaps at guard.

The Patriots had promoted a more experienced NFL linemen, James Ferentz, from the practice squad to serve as a back-up center.  If Onwenu had not played so well, Ferentz might have come in to play center and Thuney moved back to left guard with Onwenu returning to the bench.

Everything is relative.  The…

Everything is relative.  The BMW X3 M Competition with 503 HP has been clocked at 0 to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds, 25% quicker than the M40i.  This performance comes at a price with the MSRP for the X3 M Competition about $20K more than that of the X3 M40i.  The EPA estimated fuel economy on the highway for the X3 M Competition is 19 mpg compared to 27 mpg for the X3 M40i.  The X3 M suspension has also been characterized by some reviewers as uncomfortably firm for daily driving even in the "comfort" setting.

I recently purchased a 2020 BMW X3 M40i.  It is reasonably quick at 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds, handles, rides and brakes well and achieved 30 mpg in a recent 600 mile trip at speeds averaging more than 70 mph.  There is sufficient cargo and passenger capacity for my two dog crates to fit in the back with the rear seat up while four people may ride in comfort.

Bill Belichick said this…

Bill Belichick said this about Onwenu during a press conference:

"Right, well, Mike's a very flexible player. I don't think he's played tackle since high school, but he played a number of positions for us in training camp – guard, tackle, we saw tight end there in the game yesterday. Similar but different than [Nate] Solder – when Solder was drafted, of course he was a first round pick, but came in and played the majority of his rookie year at right tackle and the jumbo tight end position," Belichick said. "Mike's earned playing time and he's been able to play different spots for us. Right now, our two guards are pretty established players and they played well. If we can find a way to utilize our personnel productively, then we'll try to do that. But, Mike's a smart kid and he's got good versatility, he's worked hard, and he's embraced the opportunity to play different positions. Even though he doesn't have a lot of experience there, he learns quickly and is able to utilize his skills to be productive."

It is not surprising that…

It is not surprising that Senator Murphy fails to cite the wasteful and misguided athletic spending in his own state of Connecticut.  Any criticism of UConn might cost the Senator votes.

The University of Connecticut in recent years had over $80 million in annual expenses for its athletic programs and revenues of less than half this amount.  UConn women's basketball Coach Geno Auriemma makes $2.4 million annually (>60% of women's basketball revenue) for a sport that generates less than $4 million in revenue and has an operating loss of over $4 million. In contrast, in recent years Harbaugh's salary of about $8 million annually is 7% of Michigan football revenue and about 10% of the profit from football.

Justin Fargas played for…

Justin Fargas played for Michigan from 1998 to 2000 before transferring to USC.  He was a third round draft choice by the Oakland Raiders.  In his best season with the Raiders, he topped 1000 yards rushing in 2007.

Fargas is the son of Starsky and Hutch actor Antonio Fargas, who played Huggy Bear.

Snow tires are not a good…

Snow tires are not a good choice for everyone.  I drive between Michigan to Maryland several times each year.  While at times during the year snow tires may be useful in Michigan, it may be 60 degrees or more in Maryland when I arrive.  At temperatures of 60F or higher, snow tires do not perform well and the handling is less safe than all season tires.  AWD appears to be a better alternative than snow tires in my travels between snowy and mild climates.

I transport my dogs in two dog crates on trips.  I need space for the crates behind the rear seat that is not available in a sedan.  I also prefer the higher driving position of my vehicle and the ease of entrance and exit, which a sedan does not offer.

Some adversity and exposure…

Some adversity and exposure to different offenses does not necessarily destroy a college quarterback's opportunities to have success at the next level.  In fact, it may better prepare a QB to develop and compete in the NFL.

Tom Brady's record as a starter at Michigan was 20 and 5.  He excelled in two bowl games, but failed to be selected until the 6th round of the NFL draft.  Despite these disadvantages, Brady has a record of NFL success that is second to none.

I hope Shea will lead Michigan to a dominating victory in a bowl game.  If he does, this may be a springboard to a better opportunity to play in the NFL.

Many companies today have a…

Many companies today have a policy that prohibits disclosing any information to a prospective  employer beyond dates the employee or former employee worked for the company.  Such a policy limits the potential for lawsuits.  So it is quite possible that a prospective employer will learn nothing significant by contacting your current boss.

A vindictive employer might seek to sow seeds of doubt.  For example, they might convey surprise that you would be seriously considered for an executive level position.  The company's representative may then decline to discuss details as this is prohibited by company policy.

As others have noted, if you grant permission to contact your current boss or employer, this may poison the well with your current employer.  You may be viewed as disloyal or headed out the door.  This in turn may adversely impact your future retention and limit potential for promotions or other job opportunities with your current employer, if you do not get the position you are seeking.

I had a very cordial relationship with a previous boss.  He expressed confidence in my work and recognized my performance in material ways.  However, he could be vindictive.  If my boss learned I was seeking a position outside the company, I am convinced this would have adversely impacted the relationship with my boss and opportunities for advancement.

As others suggested, I anticipate considerable downside and little benefit in granting permission to contact a current employer.  If you explain the reasons for your reluctance, most prospective employers will readily acknowledge why such contact is problematic for you and not perceive this refusal as disingenuous.

In an executive level position, it will be critical that you keep the company's confidences and think strategically.  In turn, a good employer should appreciate your ability to anticipate consequences and will preserve your confidences where to do otherwise exposes you to unreasonable risks.

There are some helpful…

There are some helpful resources for expats seeking jobs in Germany.

https://www.expatica.com/de/employment/finding-a-job/how-to-find-a-job-in-germany-tips-from-an-expat-106293/

I worked in Switzerland for four years some 20 years ago.  I was fortunate to have an employer obtain the work visa and other necessary documentation.  Germany, like Switzerland, has more bureaucracy and regulations to navigate to work and live than in the US.  If one is not fluent in German, this becomes even more challenging both for meeting job requirements and daily life.  It is also a disadvantage for many positions not to be an EU citizen.

For purposes of qualifying for a position, US college degrees will not necessarily be viewed as equivalent to EU counterparts.  As others suggested, the best opportunity for your daughter may be to teach in an international schools.  There are job fairs and postings for such positions, but this is very late in the cycle for the coming school year.  There is considerable competition for jobs in international schools at the most desirable locations.

The best chance to find a meaningful job may require flexibility as to location, preparation and persistence.  In my opinion, limiting a job search to a specific city in Germany is not an approach likely to lead to quick success.  For example, perhaps your future son-in-law's experience with the Red Wings' front office might be valued by a team in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (translation "German Ice Hockey League").  There is no DEL team in Heidelberg, but there is one in nearby Mannheim.  Your son-in-law might send his resume to all 14 teams in the DEL to determine if there is interest in hiring someone with his background.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deutsche_Eishockey_Liga

https://www.del.org

A friend's daughter while in the US applied for several positions in international schools.  She was initially accepted for a position in Kiev.  This experience facilitated her subsequent moves to other international schools, most recently in Germany.  Once a job was secured by my friend's daughter, the husband would look for work near the same city, which generally is difficult for a foreigner without a work visa that is not fluent in the local language.  The husband has worked in a couple locations providing support as a civilian contractor to US military installations in Europe.

Best wishes to you and your family.

Michigan follows the Big Ten…

Michigan follows the Big Ten policy of requiring a ticket for everyone regardless of age including infants being carried and/or in back or front packs.  Call me a grumpy old man, but I support the policy for reasons of safety and in consideration of other fans.

I have a 2 year old grandchild that I dearly love, but would not think of bringing her to a Michigan game at this age.  If I want to spend quality time with my grandchild there are far better options.  I would be able to experience the game better watching on TV with my grandchild then at the stadium.

The grandchild would not know what is going on during the game and would not remember the experience.  She will need constant supervision as she likes to explore which is potentially dangerous and a distraction for myself and others.  When constrained in what the grandchild may do she is prone to tantrums that will detract from the enjoyment of the game by others.  She may not be able to see much of the game sitting on anyone's lap, as other fans stand during exciting plays and sometimes for extended periods.  She may be exposed to foul language at the game that I would prefer to avoid.

Seating in the stadium is tight enough without adding children that have no tickets.  In addition, you may not be able to bring into the stadium many items that you may need to keep young children happy and entertained.

My suggestion is one or more adults take the younger children to Ann Arbor Hands-on-Museum during the game.  https://www.aahom.org You might even have some adults (with their own tickets) switch roles at half-time.  The children are likely to have more fun at the museum as well as the adults attending the game.  Meet for a family meal after the game and share your experiences.

Northwood University in…

Northwood University in Midland, MI is SVSU's rival.  They play each other in the "Axe Bowl", which is such a big deal that this game was streamed nationwide on ESPN3 in 2018.  SVSU beat Northwood 31-10 after consecutive losses to Ferris State and Grand Valley State the weeks before.

http://www.svsucardinals.com/sports/fball/2018-19/releases/20180824ecyllf

No doubt many on this forum night have watched the SVSU Cardinals play the Northwood University Timberwolves as a warm-up for the Michigan vs Penn State game, if they knew the Axe Bowl was being streamed.

A couple of comments…

A couple of comments suggested law as a possibility.  A career in the law presents significant challenges and expenses.

Getting a law degree would likely require two more years of college and then an additional three years of law school.  Tuition at many law schools will exceed $50K per year. U of M law school is currently $57K for in-state tuition.  So tuition to complete college and law school alone may cost over $200K.

Admission to a top tier law school is very competitive.  Unless the applicant is in the top 10% in LSAT score and GPA from a well-regarded university, admission to a top law school is unlikely.  Graduates from lower tier law schools have limited job prospects.  Pass rates for state bar exams from some law schools fall below fifty percent.

Compensation for new attorneys varies widely.  For every well-compensated, new associate at a large law firm there may be ten recent law school graduates scrambling to find positions.  Associates at top law firms may be expected to work more than 60 hours per week, which strains work-life balance.  Studies suggest less than a quarter of law school graduates go to work for large firms.  Up to half the law school graduates do not pursue a career practicing law in the long term.

Harbaugh has repeatedly stated he runs his football team as a meritocracy.  There are only so many spots on the team.  The competition to remain on Harbaugh's team continues throughout the year.  As new players join the team, some others will inevitably lose their spots.  No player, particularly a walk-on, should expect that because they were told that they survived a cut to "be on the team" that they are assured a spot going forward.

Hopefully, with the passage of time your friend's son will get over his disappointment and be grateful for the opportunity to participate as part of the team and the wonderful experiences he enjoyed as a result.

Bortenschlager game time decision

An article in today's Baltimore Sun reports Max Bortenschlager is currently a game-time decision against Michigan.  Ryan Brand is likely the next QB up if Bortenschlager is out.

Bortenschlager left Rutgers game with shoulder injury

Baltimore Sun reports Maryland sophomore quarterback Max Bortenschlager couldn’t finish Saturday’s game after an apparent shoulder injury.  Sophomore walk-on Ryan Brand finished the Rutgers game and was 8 for 12 passing for 68 yards.  Redshirt junior quarterback Caleb Henderson, who transferred to Maryland from North Carolina, may also be the next man up in case Max Bortenschlager is not available for the Michigan game.

At this time it is unclear who will play QB for Maryland next week.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I

Thanks for the suggestion.  I have been tested for hyperparathyroidism twice and this is not my problem, but  it is worth checking for those with repeated kidney stone episodes.

I have also have had five Litholink 24 hour urine collections and analysis while efforts continued to modify my urine chemistry to reduce stone formation.  These tests confirmed I have hyperoxaluria (excess oxalate in the urine).

I agree that Toradol is very effective for kidney stone pain or other urinary tract pain.  This was also the pain killer favored when I had a recent prostatectomy.  However, if you have impaired kidney function, Toradol is contraindicated because it may contribute to renal failure.

I am a patient at the U of M

I am a patient at the U of M Nephrology Clinic.  Dr. Patel there is an expert on kidney stone formation.  He is working with me to reduce the occurence of my kidney stones.

There are different chemical compositions for kidney stones and different factors that contribute to stone formation.

My stones are calcium oxalate.  Too much oxalate in the urine that may contribute to stone formation can come from the individual body chemistry and/or diet.  In my case, the meical advice boils down to: (1) limiting oxalate in diet (from sources including spinach, strawberries, nuts and certain beers), (2) keeping well hydrated to dilute the materials that may form stones, (3) taking certain medications to modify the composition of my urine, and (4) increasing the acidity in my urine to help keep stone forming materials dissolved in the urine.

Some people have uric acid based kidney stones that have a very different causation and treatment.

Age is another factor.  I had kidney stones that showed on x-rays for a decade before these passed and became a painful problem.

So keep hydrated and watch your diet and hopefully you will never experience kidney stones.

I also have been told it is

I also have been told it is important to take the pain medication before the pain is too bad or it will be less effective in controlling the pain.

I have been prescribed hydrocodone, oxycodone and other opiates for kidney stone pain.  While opiates may alleviate the kidney stone pain, the constipation that comes later from the opiate use may also be quite painful.

For me, Toradol (Ketorolac) given to me in the hospital for kidney stone pain was more effective than opiates in controlling the pain and had fewer unpleasant side effects

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ketorolac

I have had many kidney stones

I have had many kidney stones over the years.  My last stone was 13 mm and had to be broken up and removed via laser lithotripsy.  Because my left kidney has atrophied due to an earlier blockage, I know a stone may not only be painful but could cause permanent damage if not passed promptly.

A 5 mm stone will pass in most cases, but is large enough that in some cases it may not pass without intervention. If the pain continues too long you may want to explore ureteroscopy with a urologist.  Also, you may want to monitor your blood pressure.  My systolic pressure has reached 200 due to kidney stone pain.

http://www.webmd.com/kidney-stones/ureteroscopy-16859

The advice you received to drink plenty of fluids and use a heating pad is helpful.  Are you taking Flomax or the generic version Tamsulosin?  This medication may help facilitate passing your kidney stone.

I agree with those that note

I agree with those that note urban areas in Florida are a particularly hazardous area to learn to ride.  Older and distracted drivers often will not see a motorcyle, so defensive driving skills are essential.

Also, consider that sudden tropical rain storms are a common occurrence in Florida.  Riding a motorcycle or scooter in the rain or wet roads is very hazardous particularly for a new rider due to the reduced traction and visibility.

Let's try to quantify some of the risks of a new rider on a motorcycle.

http://www.insurancejournal.com/news/national/2012/04/17/243879.htm

For motorcycle riders, their first 30 days are about four times more risky than their entire second year, said Matthew Moore, vice president of the Highway Loss Data Institute. “It’s most likely inexperience. Operating a motorcycle is a fairly complex task.”  For example, he said, pulling out on a hill requires a half-dozen actions: balancing on one foot, braking to keep the bike from rolling back, shifting gear, feathering the throttle, watching for traffic and releasing the clutch.

An institute study showed 22 percent of nearly 57,000 collision claims from 2003 to 2007 occurred in the first 30 days after an insurance policy took effect. The claim rate dropped one-third in the second month and almost two-thirds after six months.

I have encountered most of the dangerous situations in the linked article below.  A motorcycle training course is helpful for the basics, but does not usually adequately prepare a rider to react properly in emergency situations.
