Imagine the headlines if harbaugh were to announce this years destination tomorrow and it happened to be to someplace that emphasized education and benefitted student athletes...
|10 weeks 2 days ago||Fumble||
Didn't Jabrill recover a fumble at the end of the msu game? It wasn't considered a pass because it would have been blown dead...
|12 weeks 15 hours ago||Osu||
I think Sparty has a chance of beating osu as well. They get osu at home and they seem at least as good as psu if they play like they did yesterday. They've also done a nice job slowing down osu's offense, so they should have a shot.
|12 weeks 5 days ago||Upcoming Games||
With the games upcoming, we might basically lock in historically great season stats before we even play OSU. 7 games in and we are still only giving up like 12% on third downs. 24% was the record. If we averaged 36% over the next 5 games, we'd still likely set the record.
And with games coming up against a sparty team that can barely put up points, Maryland, Indiana, and a struggling Iowa team, we could really put up some amazing numbers. It would surprise me if any of those teams put up more than 14 points, and I'd expect we can hold all of them to under 10.
|13 weeks 6 days ago||Evans||
I think he's the best of our RB's when he gets into space, but in a game like Wisconsin where you need to break tackles and run inside and push the pile, he's still probably a year in the weight room from being ready. But once's he's ready he could be really really good.
|13 weeks 6 days ago||Defense||
Our defensive S&P rank is just astonishingly good. A few more weeks of this and we may set a record for defensive advanced stats.
|14 weeks 2 days ago||Mack brown||
I wonder if they are not actually in attendance but calling the game remotely. He said it multiple times, and even Ron Zook wouldn't punt from there.
|16 weeks 6 days ago||I mostly agree||
I would normally agree, however I expect we will get good field position due to our defense and special teams. Given a short field, I expect more than 17 points.
|17 weeks 4 days ago||Alignment||
I got the feeling last week that our alignment was the issue on the play action inside slants that were run rather than being tempo'd. Colorado hit those passes regularly in the first half, and some were wide open. I think one went for ~50 yards after the safety missed the tackle.
But in the 2nd half it felt like the window over the middle was much smaller, and the throws were more difficult. I'm sure this was partly due to the line getting pressure.
But UCF ran the same play multiple times with success, so I'm sure PSU will be testing us as well.
|18 weeks 5 days ago||Agreed||
This to me seems like clean fun, and I thought it was kind of funny and interesting to read all the people who seem to have some relationship with Colorado.
|18 weeks 6 days ago||Jabrill||
I have seen Jabrill's stat line a few places, but they don't seem to mention his forced fumble anywhere (including here). Is there a reason that stat doesn't count? He pretty much ran straight throught the QB forcing him to drop the ball.
|26 weeks 2 days ago||Hmm||
I wonder if Duke lacrosse would agree with this or not...
|27 weeks 3 days ago||Peppers||
Peppers did play a few games in 2014...
|28 weeks 3 days ago||Schedule||
Given that schedule, I suspect I will let my season tickets lapse, and go every other year. If I had to guess, Manuel would only have done this if he knew he was going to be able to flip the MSU series somehow, but just isn't able to announce it yet. Notre Dame only has 10 games on the schedule yet for 2018. MSU only has 2 non-conference opponents, and both teams have an opening on Sept 15th, 2018.
Maybe we get lucky, and somehow convinced MSU to flip home games with us, and in exchange they get ND at home in 2018 rather than Michigan. I would be Ok with that since it restores order in the long run.
|29 weeks 3 days ago||Definitely||
I definitely see a slip in baseball since I was a kid. Other sports (mostly soccer) are taking away from baseball. Additionally it is a very slow paced game. Kids just don't often have the attention span to be interested when a game on tv takes 3 hours to play. I remember watching the tigers play regular season games as a kid, but I won't even turn on the World Series unless the tigers are in it.
|29 weeks 6 days ago||Danny devito||
Yeah but Danny Devito has the ever elusive good pad level, and would make a killer fullback.
|31 weeks 2 days ago||NBA||
Interesting observation on the NBA. I would counter that I think the NBA is so much about skill (hand/eye coordination) that doping won't help like it would in the NFL, cycling or Track. You need to be tall (so HGH until you are about 6'6) but after that, it's about being skilled.
In the NFL, you can fully exert your muscles on just about every play if you are along the line. For cycling/track it's about pure endurance or pure speed. In baseball it's been about hitting a ball as hard as you absolutely can, or pitching over 100 MPH. You don't see NBA players at a true full sprint for more than 20 feet at a time, and given the "no contact" nature of the game, you aren't going to be using your full strength very often either.
I'm sure it happens some in the NBA, but the success of people like Curry make me think there isn't as big of an edge to be gained as in other sports.
|31 weeks 5 days ago||UFR||
This is where it would have been nice to have UFR's for the last couple of games of the year, especially the bowl game. You could see trends and how people improved over the course of the year, along with who did well against top opponents vs. who struggled.
|32 weeks 3 days ago||Lewis||
Interesting that they said Lewis was 1st team big ten last year, but should make a big jump his senior year, almost as if last year was a disappointment for him. Not really sure a big jump is possible, he was already extremely dominant.
|33 weeks 4 days ago||Camps||
These camps happen in other sports all the time and are not considered a big deal. It's just that the southern coaches don't want to have to work a little harder, and don't want others getting to see their recruits.
|33 weeks 5 days ago||Offsides||
Been saying this for years. Offsides should go away once the ball is in the 18 yard box. Will increase scoring slightly, and make the game a little more exciting. I think there are also valid goals that are called off because someone is found offside while the ball basically bounce around in the box. I don't think that was the intent of the rule, and honestly, if the offense gets in those positions to score, they deserve the goal anyway...
|34 weeks 3 days ago||Best Class Ever?||
Didn't Urban Meyer have the best class ever at Florida the year before he left? Like 15 five stars or something? If I remember correctly, they actually produced some pretty terrible on field results, so maybe not such a big deal.
|35 weeks 5 days ago||Syria?||
I think it feels more like the zombie apocalypse at times. I turned down the wrong street a few weeks back, and it was nothing but blown out abandoned buildings/homes, and somehow in 3 blocks there was only 1 home that had any sign of life, and it sat next to multiple empty lots. I actually saw a person, and they were walking down the middle of the street. There were sidewalks, but since this neighborhood already went through the apocalypse, might as well just walk right down the middle of the street. No way any cars would go there, so why waste time actually heading over to the sidewalk.
|35 weeks 5 days ago||$750||
The coaches didn't have a way of handling surprise amounts, and only had $750 set aside for something like this.
|37 weeks 5 days ago||Seems like a dumb stand||
Makes no sense to limit single game records to only those who didn't transfer. Only include the games played while at Michigan, but they should be included. By that logic, maybe we should exclude those who left early and didn't finish their career. Just seems arbitrary.
|38 weeks 3 days ago||They didn't even say they had||
They didn't even say they had to be hot, just fit and a uniform look. I see nothing wrong here except the backlash and I've got daughters of my own.
|39 weeks 3 days ago||Yeah||
But peppers also got to go against Maryland players while likely faced some slightly better athletes...
|39 weeks 5 days ago||SFU||
We played SFU when I was at Michigan. They had a pretty good club team (being canadian and all), and they even had Kevin Crowley before he transferred to Stonybrook, became a 1st team all american, played for team Canada etc. I would love to see them play D1 lax. Just like hockey, they would probably be able to get some serious local talent.
|40 weeks 1 day ago||Pressler||
Pressler also went back to his alma mater and has turned down big offers since. They were the only ones who would go near him after that, and he wants to remain loyal to them. Deluca also has some baggage in that he allowed some hazing I believe, but that seams like something you should be able to get past.
|40 weeks 1 day ago||Orson||
Is he the offensive coordinator? The Denver offensive coordinator has basically been promised the Denver job when Tierney retires, so he might not really be available.
|40 weeks 1 day ago||Maybe||
I played at a similar time as you, but I thought it was about the players not being serious. I remember guys getting high on the bus trip to an away game, I remember losing to ucsb in the quarters and our captain coming off the field saying he just didn't really feel like competing that day. I remember JP punishing us for something stupid we did off the field and guys up in arms like we should walk out of practice that day. We were still of the club mindset. In 2008, JP took a much more serious approach, implemented some weight room time, and suddenly the team was dominant. I felt like JP was handicapped during my years and couldn't really get after us like he had to (which I would have loved and if I could do it all her again I would have spoken up).
|42 weeks 1 day ago||New programs||
I'm not all that amazed by the new programs. Richmond for example got shutout today against UVA. A few of those programs had signature wins already, but today or the Cornell game could have gone our way, and then so would we. We've still had some pieces of the puzzle missing the past few years, which some of those teams got via transfers.
Considering we did this without KJ and King and Hatton on defense is fantastic. Really impressed by a lot of the young guys, and Lott was a beast today. Kraus has really emerged too.
The only complaint I really have is on the defense this year, but today they played well and seem to be getting better each week. Last week WD claimed it would basically be impossible for us to get a conference win this year, but today just goes to show the potential these guys have.
|43 weeks 3 days ago||LOL||
"I named my baby after you". I heard that once, and man was it kind of creepy.
|43 weeks 4 days ago||Maybe||
KJ is very likely this teams MVP, but I wouldn't count out another win. We beat Rutgers last year, and they have had a few nice wins, but seem to be coming back down to Rutgers reality pretty soon. Penn State and Ohio State have both had some head scratchers this year as well, and we gave Penn State a good game last year.
The offense is looking pretty so far. Quick ball movement, decisive cuts, and they are playing fast. I know JP was stressing running the offense the right way lately, and things are definitely looking better. Execution still isn't quite there and timing of some things is slightly off, but things are looking better than I've seen all year.
Up 5-2 at this point, and the guys are playing with some fire. Like what I'm seeing.
|43 weeks 4 days ago||Slow pace||
Very slow pace game. Long possessions, which is a bit of a change-up for Michigan, but so far seems to be working.
|43 weeks 4 days ago||KJ||
What happened with Kyle Jackson? It looks like he and Ian King are both out, which is like half our point scorers.
So far the defense has looked a little less spread out, and has let Marist make the mistakes rather than giving them opportunities. Offense is playing a ton of young guys though. Would be big to see some new guys step up.
|44 weeks 5 days ago||30 for 30||
Sounds a lot like that Duke lacrosse 30 for 30 I saw this week...should probably hold off judgement but Sparty and all...
|45 weeks 1 day ago||Coach||
So who would you go after as a new coach? The offensive assistant for Denver is lined up to take the Denver job when tierney retires. The Bryant coach isn't leaving. We wouldn't be able to poach an acc or ivy head coach. Just curious who the top available candidates are. I would look at the brown offensive coordinator.
|45 weeks 1 day ago||Agree completely||
I would like to see them switch to a pack it in and let Gerry have some outside shots defense. We seem too spread out, and against teams that are talented we are getting picked apart. Most days the offense can put up some points, most of which are coming in 6v6 or emo, not a ton of transition.
Brown was very good though. They dominated face offs and transition, which lead to the blowout.
The only bright spot today was the backup midfield. Would like to see they get some more run. Meritocracy, and the starters just aren't putting up points. 2nd midfield looked good against Vermont too.
|46 weeks 1 day ago||Great win||
Was really happy with how the team played on offense. A lot of new players scored and good production from the midfield. Face offs were also a strength, as was man-up.
A few mental mistakes let Vermont score a few at the end and make it closer than it had to be. But definitely a good step forward all around this week.
|48 weeks 16 hours ago||Warde Manuel||
Warde knows JP personally and has supported the program in the past as well as JP. I suspect Warde will be a good thing for the lacrosse program.
|48 weeks 1 day ago||Team||
This was my first time seeing the team this year. Definitely look better than last year. Face offs are improved and KJ at attack gives them a threat to score at all times.
I felt the difference in the game was that Penn played smart and didn't beat themselves (transition, lsm goals, man down goals). There were a few defensive breakdowns, such as when an O middie got caught on D. Hopefully those get cleaned up as the season goes on.
The major deficiency I saw today was that our middies weren't able to generate points. Lots of alley dodges looking for a slide but not getting it or not beating their man. I'm not sure if that's due to the D Penn played or not. I think our scoring has been heavily attack based for the other games this year.
|49 weeks 8 hours ago||Bummer||
But at least there were no injuries and good for coach Paul. As a coach it's always a good sign when you suspend a few players, and the team comes together to win anyway. Really helps keep guys in line for the future, and helps the team gel.
|49 weeks 9 hours ago||Big Win!||
A great win by this team. I think moving KJ to attack has really helped. They now have 2 serious scoring threats at attack, so defenses can't just key on one guy, and a couple pretty good midfields as well. Interesting that Curran wasn't playing. Hopefully not injured. Also good to see faceoffs improving as well.
Colgate won the patriot league last year and went to the NCAA tourney, so this is definitely a big win. If they manage to beat Penn next week, that would be another huge step forward.
Colgate also looked like they were a very disciplined team, working hard to make sure they didn't beat themselves. I'd be curious to see how the clearing stats came out. Early in the game it seemed like Michigan was the only ones throwing it away, perhaps as a result of pushing it too hard, but Colgate ended up making the mistakes in the 4th quarter and Michigan capitalized.

A former teammate of mine has produced for the athletic department before, and the videos were fantastic. He does one every year for the lacrosse team.
|50 weeks 1 day ago||Lax||
Looks like UNC is pulling away. Logan, starting goalie, was either pulled at the half, or is injured. Hoping it's nothing serious. The score at the half was encouraging, hopefully we can get some momentum in the 4th. KJ with 4 goals at attack.
Also, can't believe UNC doesn't have streaming for this game. Furman had free streaming for their game. Get with the times UNC!!!!
|51 weeks 5 hours ago||Yep||
Was thinking the same thing. I would hope someone at least thought to ask her...
|1 year 1 day ago||Other new programs||
Those other new programs would not have made the NCAA tournament had they competed in the same league as Michigan. It is purely a product of having played in one of the 2 worst conferences, and still getting an auto-bid. They are on par with Michigan (give or take), and certainly not out of Michigan's league at this point

My mom had an 89 Lx when I was young and kept it until I turned 15...
|1 year 1 week ago||Interesting||
Sounds like he just wasn't sure why he wasn't playing, and from that, you really can't tell what the coaches were thinking. I'm sure they had some reason, but good to hear he graded out well for the opportunities he was given. Hope we get him!
|1 year 2 weeks ago||Prestige||
Honestly, the Playoff took the prestige out of the BCS/national championship hunt for me. All that matters is winning your power 5 conference, and not being the team with multiple losses to do it.
Out of conference doesn't really matter (ask OSU from last year, or had Iowa beaten MSU this year). September doesn't really matter. Losing to Nebraska on a crappy call doesn't matter (when it would have eliminated you in the past). Getting blown out by Texas doesn't matter.
It used to feel like you needed perfection to be considered for a championship. It made moments like auburn's kick 6 special. Or for nebraska that flukey TD against Missouri. Michael Crabtree scoring a touchdown with 1 second left to eliminate Oklahoma State. The Bush push. The last second or close wins ND had in 2012. All were special moments for those teams because when they happened, you knew it meant something.
This year, I just feel like the magic's gone, because you just needed to win your Power 5 conference. When Alabama lost to Ole Miss, it just felt like no big deal, because Alabama still had plenty of chances.
|1 year 2 weeks ago||Not quite that||
They were taking 10-15 yard slants to the house last year. Certainly worth attempting them, rather than bashing your quarterbacks head into a stacked box 12 times in a row. MSU managed to complete a 36 yard pass with their backup qb. It's not like it was impossible and not worth an attempt.
|1 year 2 weeks ago||Good article||
A very good read. I don't agree the window is closing, but do agree that spread to pass teams (Baylor, Oregon, OSU, Indiana, etc.) have given them plenty of trouble. After last year's MSU-OSU game, there was another great article that made similar points. It showed how they used run action to get 1v1's against corners or safeties that resulted in quite a few long touchdown passes.
I would have figured Meyer would have remembered the game plan from the prior year, but who knows what they were thinking this year.
|1 year 2 weeks ago||Great Writeup||
I wonder if this is something the staff saw on film when Florida played LSU. During the game the announcers said the Michigan staff noted that they saw what LSU did to Florida, which showed them how they would be able to run between the tackles on this defense.
|1 year 6 weeks ago||thanks||
Excited for the season. I also agree that a successful year would be taking a step forward and approaching .500 or beating a ranked team. We've come close the past few years, and it would be nice to see the team take that next step and finally do it.
The team has a few more pieces in place and I think moving KJ to attack will make a big impact.
|1 year 8 weeks ago||Peppers||
One difference with Michigan though is that Peppers automatically outnumbers however many blockers you have out there, so screens are pretty much shut down.
|1 year 10 weeks ago||Could be MSU's choice||
You never know, this could have been Dantonio's choice. Offers could be pulled for any number of reasons. Maybe MSU won't have spots open up, maybe they like how other recruits are progressing better, academics, a terrible rap video with the kid smoking weed, etc.
I figure it's not worth worrying over. They will get some good players regardless, as will Michigan.
|1 year 11 weeks ago||Lax||
If only they drew the lines on the lacrosse field correctly...
Otherwise I can't wait to see it for real!
|1 year 11 weeks ago||Drake||
Drake Johnson looked good. Reminded me of what he looked like towards the end of last year. Good patience and vision, and enough speed to pick up some pretty good yards. Hope we rest Smith against Rutgers and see Drake start to get into a rhythm.
|1 year 18 weeks ago||Bad blocking||
Harbaugh said post game it was blocked incorrectly and he expected it was going to be a tackle for loss, but poor defense and a good job by Isaac with a great individual effort.
|1 year 24 weeks ago||Nice||
Somehow missed this yesterday. Looks like a talented kid.
He's still a kid though. Just finished his freshman year of high school. So it'll be a while before he's on campus, and longer still before he's an upper classmen.
Very interested to see how some of the blue chip guys coming in this year do. Curran, Noseworthy and Sutherland all look like they could be good. Hopefully a few others too.
|1 year 35 weeks ago||Taxes||
One thing I've heard is that with taxes so much higher in Canada, there is not much difference between the Detroit/Toronto offer. I hope he sticks around though.
|1 year 36 weeks ago||Great Post||
I really enjoyed the video, thanks for posting.
Rudock looked good, and was making plays/throws we haven't seen since Henne. It would be interesting to see some video comparing him to the guy who stole the starting job from him, and what went wrong for Rudock before he was benched. From this game he looks like a pretty darn good QB.
|1 year 40 weeks ago||Unfortunate loss||
The team looked very good at times today. Diving for ground balls, some nice plays on offense and some good saves from Logan. I didn't think the D looked all that bad to be honest. A few bad plays, but a number of bad breaks and penalties really hurt.
The biggest issue we had was face offs. I don't think we won one until the 3rd quarter, and they were able to possess the ball all day, and eventually get some good looks. Had face offs been even I'm guessing this game would have been a lot closer. We were definitely some looks, but didn't have the ball enough to generate them regularly.
|1 year 41 weeks ago||I'll be there||
Will be good to see the team in some nice weather, and hopefully make this an interesting game. Osu is really inconsistent. We have been playing better lately, and getting king back helps.
|1 year 41 weeks ago||Blocking||
Isn't this why they invented the blocking rule way back when? I thought I heard it was because guys were going up for layups and getting undercut. That's why you never saw people dunk prior to the 70's or whatever because it was too dangerous to attempt.
|1 year 41 weeks ago||Great win||
Team looked good today. D played well, lots of contributors on O, king is back and a conference victory. One more win is likely needed to make the conference tourney.
Tracy was playing attack again and looked good. I know he had at least an assist.
|1 year 42 weeks ago||Watched on BTN||
It was definitely cool to see the game at home, in HD on BTN. Maryland was definitely the better team, especially at the X and with their defense. We had a number of poor turnovers to start the game which didn't help either.
Injuries also seem to be hurting this team. King is out, a number of defenders are out, and it looked like Joseph may have gotten hurt yesterday. I know he played early, but then Hernandez ran an awful lot with the 1's. I don't know that I saw the 2nd line middies much either.
It was good to see Tracy pick up a couple points. His dodge from X and goal was impressive. I'd like to see him get some more PT. He seems athletic enough to beat his defenders, which is something this team lacks at times.
|1 year 43 weeks ago||DL||
I would draft DL in early rounds here because there isn't much depth. I wouldn't want to get stuck with the reserves on the DL. I'd also draft RB's and LB's later since we have depth and not a lot of differentiation there.
So in my mind the early draft isn't saying DL will be a strength, so much as it could signal lack of depth. Unless this is like changes in players weight during the offseason, where all news is good news.
|1 year 44 weeks ago||Evolving Rules||
The rules of lacrosse have been changing due to concussions. It's basically illegal now to give out a big physical body check. Girls are even wearing helmets in some states, and their rules have no contact at all. The game is still largely the same, but safer.
I'm not sure I can see Football finding a way to change the rules to keep it safer without drastically impacting the style of play.
|1 year 45 weeks ago||Good win||
I think today's game was really a 2nd chance at a team like Jacksonville. They were big, strong, athletic, and last year beat us at home much like the JU team beat us last week.
Credit to the defense, goalies and FOGOs. We packed it in and gave up lots of shots, but they weren't great shots. It looked like good team defense. This team was no cupcake given what they did to Virginia earlier in the week. To do this without king and on the road speaks to the effort the team gave today.
|1 year 45 weeks ago||Inconsistent||
If the knock on him was that he was inconsistent and not giving full effort during the year, 2 drastically different 40 times doesn't help that concern. Injury? Effort? Or just bad timing by hand today?
Really surprised they didn't use electronic timers. Even my high school had an electronic timer, and that was in the 90's.
|1 year 46 weeks ago||wow||
Judging by the way that we were outshot, Cal only going 2-11 on free positions and us taking 48 penalites (!) I am surprised we won. Looks like we played really smart on offense, and good for the team to take a road win. Tough to get those wins on the west coast.
|1 year 46 weeks ago||Movement||
I've seen plenty of movement in prior games. Not sure if we were trying something new last night or not, but I have a feeling the lack of possessions really got us out of synch.
|1 year 46 weeks ago||Jax||
They definitely have some guys we would have taken. The recruiting process is very early in lacrosse, . But I would think that their upper classmen should be on par with our upperclassmen by now (KJ, Hernandez, Logan, etc.). It's also not a surefire as football/basketball, and plenty of guys develop late.
This team has historically struggled away from home and outdoors, and tonight they just looked off in a number of respects.
I wouldn't say I'd be ready to throw in the towel on the team or the staff at this point. In lacrosse these types of games happen. If you run up on a match up that doesn't stack up well for your style or personel, that team can give you plenty of trouble.
This is still a "young" team in that they still have to learn how to win these types of games. Win road games, close games, games against top notch opponents or games where faceoffs or penalties don't go your way. Last year we just started to learn to win the easy ones. Now we need to learn the tough ones.
|1 year 46 weeks ago||Yep||
Started with the face off penalty in the 2nd quarter, then the inability to win a faceoff in the 3rd really hurt them. Faceoffs have been trouble all year, and is really something that could have helped stop the runs in the 3rd quarter.
Beyond that we don't seem to winning any of the 50/50 balls and too many careless turnovers on offense. The guys need to learn how to play up tempo without the turnovers.
|1 year 47 weeks ago||Yes||
If he's playing in the NFL, I'd prefer he play for the lions rather than against them, assuming he's affordable.
|1 year 47 weeks ago||Not bad||
Could be interesting as a "practice helmet". The lacrosse team uses practice helmets, and gets a new design each year. The winged helmet is only for special occassions such as game days.
|1 year 48 weeks ago||Fan voting||
Never underestimate the power of Michigan fans to vote for Michigan in online polls! Although only 1 other player had 8 points last weekend, so pretty darn good regardless.
|1 year 48 weeks ago||tickets||
Yep, I agree, you should be able to get tickets, but definitely plan on arriving early. I was there 50 minutes early yesterday, and we got some of the last sideline seats. There were seats behind the goals.
Game will not be televised. The building is too small to put a camera up high. An upset could be possible if this team gets hot and plays well, which they are capable of in that building. Notre Dame is traditionally pretty good on defense and ball control, so I'm excited to see how we measure up.
|1 year 49 weeks ago||Yes||
The Ohio state game will be on ESPNU. I think some games might be on BTN too when the big ten schedule starts.
|1 year 49 weeks ago||I went||
Seeing it in person really made me believe in this team. I wasn't sure if last week was a fluke since I only saw the score, but Michigan was clearly better today. This team is a significant step up from last year. We are dangerous on offense, and not just one or two middies but all 6 guys. Great ball movement, athletes able to reliably draw a slide and more stick skills than we've ever had. You will see quite a few pretty goals in the highlights.
The defense looked markedly better too. 6 goals, but 1-2 were on EMO and a couple were just mental lapses on cuts near the crease. Our D middies and poles held up really well and often times didn't even have to slide.
We are still young though, and haven't played top 20 teams yet, so I will be interested to see how those games go later this year. Face offs started well but then Detroit seemed to have an advantage. Consistency there will be important.
This should be a fun year to watch this team grow!
|1 year 50 weeks ago||Great win||
This was a big win for this team. Great job pulling away in the second half and winning the 3rd quarter. Scoring from quite a few different guys and a nice improvement over last year.
I'm excited for the UDM game next week. Taking my wife on Valentine's day. And what a huge win for them today too, beating Ohio state. This might be a pretty evenly matched game next week.
|2 years 1 week ago||Absolutely important||
They are by far the most readily available. Employers use them when recruiting (they can't go to every school). High school students use them to determine where to go to college, and thus more qualified/accomplished students end up going to those higher ranked schools.
|2 years 8 weeks ago||Yes||
Yes, Lax was added because the lacrosse alumni and parents paid for it to be added. Most of the money came from just a few donors, but enough money was raised to endow the program. The athletic department "matched" the donations by adding women's lacrosse. Donors also funded a significant portion of the new facility, although I have much less insight into that. Some of the money probably came from the Stephen Ross donation.
Playing in the big house is pretty cool, and the guys will still probably get a chance to do so once per year after/before the football spring game, but the lax facilities are expected to be the best in the country. This helps with recruiting, as the team is starting to haul in some top-10 classes. The kids believe the university is committed to this new sport and they are putting their money where their mouth is. For such a new program, recruiting classes that highly ranked is an incredible accomplishment.
Lacrosse teams carry usually 45-50 kids, and the average kid gets about a 1/4 scholarship. As the incremental cost of having another kid in a classroom is quite low, and the kid is on average paying 75% of the tuition, the scholarships are not quite as expensive to the university as you'd think.
|2 years 8 weeks ago||S.I.||
Good to see SI pick this up, although I wish it was the full story, which you can actually read on mgoblue.com.
The funny thing is that since we are well into 2018 recruiting, I half thought this was serious when they said a 2023 kid.
|2 years 8 weeks ago||Agreed||
Agree completely. The fact that he can't consistently win 50/50 balls makes me wonder about him being ready for the NFL. If he can't do that at this level, I don't see him being a 1st round pick.
|2 years 10 weeks ago||Trend||
I was curious if the numbers this team is putting up would indicate improvement over the season, or regression. I'd love to see some stats pointing to this team getting better over the year (maybe yards per carry), and maybe give me some hope for next year.
It does look like if you ignore App State since they are just terrible, that from ND on, there is a slight upward trend. But probably nothing significant if you account for quality of opponent.
|2 years 10 weeks ago||Not all||
Some sports had donors set up an endowment to fund the sport. Certainly most though.
|2 years 10 weeks ago||Funchess||
I've been saying for a few weeks that his play doesn't merit a 1st round pick. At this point, he hasn't shown much other than being a freak athlete. He isn't a great blocker, has quite a few drops, looks like he takes plays off or in this case doesn't know the play all together.
And what should be a strength, jump balls, just don't seem to get thrown his way. 2 offensive coordinators and almost no jump balls. Borges would just toss it up to Hemingway or Roundtree, but really didn't for Funchess. I actually wonder if he has good "ball skills" while the ball is in the air or if it's Gardner.
|2 years 12 weeks ago||Good find||
Glad that didn't turn out to be true. I think the report of "not back next year" was taken incorrectly.
|2 years 12 weeks ago||Maybe not so good||
What happens if DB announces he will stay on through the academic year like ESPN is reporting, thus leaving Hoke's future in his hands? Or making it tougher to hire a Harbaugh?
|2 years 12 weeks ago||Devin||
Devin has said himself that he is willing to play receiver to give it a go in the NFL. Can't remember where I read that but it was recent.
|2 years 12 weeks ago||Too much money||
I would take him for 3-4 years, but I doubt schlissel would approve enough money to pay for him. His comments have been about how athletics need to know their place in the university and about not gouging the consumer. Not sure where the money would come from to pay for an A list coach unless some donors would pay.
|2 years 13 weeks ago||Film||
Honestly, If I were Dave I'd watch film with the coaches too. After watching the Borges debacle last year I'd want to know WTF was going through his head and if the problem was Hoke or Borges, and if you had confidence that we'd get better.
It wouldn't surprise me if the coaches watched our film and said "well we just didn't execute but we competed and showed some toughness". If I was choosing between making a coaching change or not, I'd sure want to know what I really thought of the current staff before making a move.
|2 years 13 weeks ago||Lawrence Marshall||
Isn't Lawrence Marshall Jr. on crutches at the moment? He's a freshman, but seems like a fairly serious injury.
3 career ending injuries is a lot. No matter who they are that will hurt.
|2 years 13 weeks ago||Seriously?||
Have they seen him block? Or do they not do that in the NFL? He's got a lot of potential, but I don't think he will even get 1st team all big 10. If he's drafted that high it's a big risk in my opinion.
Right now he is the #69 player in the country in terms of yards. He has 4 touchdowns, with 3 against App State, and is averaging 12.8 yards per catch. He's also been injured and missed game time (which hurts draft stock). I think he's one of our best players, but that seems like a big reach to me.
|2 years 13 weeks ago||Non revenue||
I'm a non revenue sport fan myself and i never felt attacked. Some non revenue sports bring in enough money to finance their operations and facilities, but certainly not all. I do worry how the budget balances when we decide to cut 30% or whatever of our revenue.
|2 years 14 weeks ago||Jake Ryan||
Happily surprised to see Jake Ryan is leading the big ten in tackles for loss.
|2 years 15 weeks ago||MSU||
MSU is #39 on this list. I think we've got a while before I can put too much weight into these numbers.
|2 years 15 weeks ago||Excited||
I'm excited to see the team grow this year. The outcomes of last week's scrimmages were definitely positive and what looks like a step forward from last year. I believe we are still a couple years out until the top 25 recruits get to campus, but I like the trajectory we are currently on.
I also can't wait to see Madaisky and Mosko on D. Add some depth on D and a "quarterback" attackman and this team could really make a leap forward.
|2 years 15 weeks ago||Thank you||
Would love to see how this changes from week to week. I think the early season numbers could be skewed by using having played a couple bad OOC teams, and our BCS opponents having their numbers inflated due to playing a number of bad teams as well. Over time as the conference schedule gets going that should move our opponents average.
But it is good to see some progress quantified, which is about all the hope I have left for this season.
|2 years 15 weeks ago||Thank You||
Appreciate the update. I'm looking for some improvement from last year any way I can get it. If this season is lost, I'm really just hoping for some positive trajectory for next year that the next coach can build on.
|2 years 16 weeks ago||Schiano||
Yes, I think Greg Schiano makes a ton of sense. I have to think he will strongly be considered should the home run hires not be available.
|2 years 16 weeks ago||Agreed||
A road game could be good, although I hate that it's a night game. The guys will have time to watch gameday and see what everyone else is saying about them.
If Devin starts well, I think we could be just fine. But if it's another half of 3 and outs, I think the D may give up. A lead at the half could be really important.
|2 years 16 weeks ago||I knew||
I knew when I was concussed. I've had a couple somewhat bad ones and knew every time.
I'm not saying Shane knew but as a coach I did have to put some (not all) trust in my kids to tell me when things happened. Some concussions occur with contact that doesn't look bad, and the only one who could know is the player.
It can be a difficult situation to manage.
|2 years 17 weeks ago||Letter||
There are things in that list that I know for a fact are not true. There is no way that list (the one that includes hitler) is anything halfway legitimate.
If there is a letter that is being signed it won't have anything to do with that list.
|2 years 17 weeks ago||Motivation||
This to me feels like a chance to let DG know he really needs to step it up. Not that we are desperate for Morris to be better than DG. I feel like they may not be that far apart, but going with Morris let's DG know he needs to change his approach or he could lose his job.
I suspect Morris starts, plays conservatively, but DG is back for Penn State.
|2 years 21 weeks ago||No numbers this year||
I'd prefer not to fill those jerseys this year.
I could see Canteen as the next #21. And I think we'd all agree who we want to see wear #2 after Countess.
|2 years 22 weeks ago||Schedule||
Yes, Brandon said that a model was built with certain parameters, and all schools agreed to those parameters before the games were drawn. There was no approval or veto process after, and you just had to go with what you were given.
If we had the 2015 schedule this year, I don't think there would be much complaining, and instead we would be talking about what we need to do to make the playoff.
|2 years 23 weeks ago||Cupcakes||
Jacksonville, Detroit, and providence were all similar in laxpower to the 3 teams you mentioned, as well as Michigan. Granted they aren't as new, but should be wins.
|2 years 24 weeks ago||Stadium||
I don't expect it next year. Last I heard from JP that was still a ways off and I don't believe they have started construction yet. I expect they may aim for 2016. Here's hoping the obannon case doesn't mess that up.
|2 years 24 weeks ago||Wow.||
I don't think one of those drills required pads.
But great to see peppers field a punt!
|2 years 24 weeks ago||Wow||
Wow. That is a serious schedule. Looks like a 14 game regular season, with 8 of those games coming against teams that were in the NCAA tournament either of the past 2 years.
It'll be a challenge to have a record much different than last year's, but if we can make some progress and steal one of those tough games, it'll give the team quite a bit of confidence.
I hope we get ND at oosterbaan, but only because we seem to play better there and there is no way I'd want to sit out in the cold at that time of year. Maybe they will chicken out on that game and want it played outside.
|2 years 24 weeks ago||Center||
Who do we think will start at Center for the first game with Glasgow out? I know last year people were expecting big things from Kugler, but I haven't heard his name recently.
|2 years 24 weeks ago||Info||
I've actually gotten some decent info out of the show. In 2009 Dinardo mentioned that the offense was improved, but the defense would struggle, which was spot on. Last year I believe he mentioned we were weak in the trenches.
He usually tweets out his reactions from the day, and while many on this site know quite a bit about the team, he usually finds something we wouldn't expect (such as who is unexpectedly taking 1st team reps, which freshman look good enough to play, etc.).
|2 years 25 weeks ago||problem||
Would we have this problem if our schedule included MSU and OSU? I feel like we play a "kent state" a few times this year and don't have any prestige games to make up for it.
|2 years 27 weeks ago||Ford||
I am generally pretty happy with this hire, although I really don't know enough about him to judge yet. I do remember watching the Penn-Drexel game this year and wondering why Michigan's offense couldn't look as good as Drexel's. It just seemed like simple fundamentals that they used to expose Penn's defense.
I think his top priority is going to be to develop that dodging/feeding attackman who can serve as the QB of the offense. Hopefully we have some guys coming in or that can step up to a role like that. Some of the recruits I've seen look like they can fill that role, but with the annoyingly early recruiting it doesn't look like they will be on campus for a few years.
|2 years 28 weeks ago||Cost||
So how much do you think it costs to have 1 incremental student in a given class? This is often the argument smaller schools make for supporting non-revenue sports.
I would also suggest that most non-revenue sports students graduate, and given the lower scholarship numbers available, the costs are driven down further. In lacrosse for example, the NCAA limit is a whopping 12.6 scholarships, for teams that carry 40+ guys, so about a 25% scholarship for the average kid. The school is probably close to breaking even on the education portion if the kid pays 75% of the way themselves.
Although I don't actually support scholarships for life for non-revenue sports. The majority of kids aren't leaving school early to go pro, and should be pushed to get their degree when they can. Otherwise kids might just stretch it out like a vacation (I know I would have), which is unnecessarily wasteful.
|2 years 30 weeks ago||Confusing||
I wonder the same thing. I was expecting Lewis or Allen to get drafted higher, but people said they were too small for the NFL. Those guys sure seemed to do just fine punishing the smash mouth teams to me. I'm expecting a few more of their guys to start making an impact in the NFL but I just haven't seen it yet. Unfortunately I think it could just be the system more than the players that makes them good.
|2 years 34 weeks ago||Sergio||
I wish we could have landed Sergio, although I believe he was already committed to ND before we even announced a varsity team. He is a difference maker, and glad he's from Michigan.
He's not quite Myles Jones though. I think Jones might be the favorite for the Tewaarton next year. Myles Thompson will be as well, but without his brother and cousin, I'd expect his production to be down quite a bit as teams will be able to game plan to stop him.
|2 years 35 weeks ago||New Teams||
I think the Marquette/Richmond/U of Detroit style teams are going to be much more common than the BCS style teams. There are many more of them, and in the economic reality of it, giving a partial scholarship to a student who wouldn't attend your university anyway is extremely cheap, and increases the university's profile. It really doesn't cost anything extra to put one extra student in a classroom.
For schools like Michigan, the reality is that they are turning students away, so there is a definite opportunity cost. Additionally, those types of schools don't go half in on something like this, or else it could actually hurt their "brand". They will be expected to build facilities, fully fund scholarships, etc.
I could see one of the Colorado schools adding it, and maybe we get lucky and a Texas or USC adds it, but I expect the majority of growth to come from those small schools.
|2 years 36 weeks ago||weight||
Bullough weighed in at 265 at the shrine game (not end of season I stand corrected) and weighed in 16 lbs less at the combine.
|2 years 36 weeks ago||Bullough||
Bullough dropped like 15+ pounds between the end of the season and combine. Losing that much weight over 6 weeks sounds an awful lot like steroids, and NFL teams would shy away from that.
I am also dumbfounded by the lack of draft picks for MSU, but at least it won't help them with recruiting. Top defense in the country graduated a bunch of starters and only 1 gets drafted. I thought Allen would get drafted, or their safety (Lewis?).
|2 years 37 weeks ago||Great video||
I loved this video and look forward to his videos each year, ever since being in his first ever team video. Those videos were good, but his new ones just blow me away. Hopefully recruits see these videos because they are amazing and I doubt any other program in the country has videos like this (at least with this much production value).
The 2016 class will be great. 2 of the top 15 players in the country, including an attackman (which we need) and the grandson of Gerald Ford.
|2 years 38 weeks ago||Yes||
It will be on fox college sports, who I think also televised the mcla's when Michigan played there. I remember being able to find a stream online for those through fox.
FYI seeding will be announced Monday.
|2 years 38 weeks ago||ECAC tiebreaker||
The tiebreaker is RPI, and prior to beating ohio state today, Fairfield had a slight advantage over OSU. That should likely hold, but maybe isn't a sure thing yet.
Great overall game today by Michigan, but RMU looked like they didn't show up. Just saw no urgency and really they never threatened. Although credit to Michigan for putting them down quick and not allowing them to make a run.
Great way to send out the seniors and have some confidence going into the Fairfield game.
|2 years 40 weeks ago||Lewis||
I think where Lewis could struggle is in run support, although I wasn't specifically watching him when we ran, since I wanted to see the Oline. He's still pretty small for a corner. Peppers on the other hand is a beast, so where his coverage and defensive knowledge could lag Lewis, he might be better in run support and so might be out there more on first and second down as opposed to maybe just 3rd and long.
Lewis sure looked fantastic though in coverage.
|2 years 43 weeks ago||Lax||
Not so fast my friend. I believe michigan could lose all their games, and if Fairfield loses to everyone but michigan, we would be in a 3 way tie. Unlikely, but still a possibility. If the tie breaker was goal differential, I wouldn't like our chances as our win was only by 1 goal.
|2 years 44 weeks ago||Good game||
I saw the game, and was impressed. Maryland looked like a final 4 type team, and Michigan played them tough. The defense looked great, and so did Schlosser.
I would say Lott is the MVP right now if I had to choose. Lott is really doing it by himself for the most part, and against some of the top face off guys in the country. I think he has a chance to get first team all ECAC, which would be a Michigan first.
|2 years 44 weeks ago||OSU||
OSU will certainly be tough, but we get them at home, and they are really struggling with face offs. With Lott playing well, if we get them on a good day, it's certainly possible we give them a game.
They are definitely better than a 1-5 record indicates.
|2 years 44 weeks ago||Saban||
Saban probably called Nuss to save him from having to cut the kid. /s
|2 years 44 weeks ago||3 way||
It would have to be a 3 way tie with bellarmine and one of OSU or Fairfield. Those 2 teams still have to play each other, so it would also have to be with the loser of that game, and bellarmine would have to beat that loser as well. Will be unlikely.
|2 years 44 weeks ago||10||
I believe I counted 10 different wolverines with goals. Only paras had more than 1(2).
|2 years 44 weeks ago||Bellarmine||
They already lost to michigan and Air Force, with the top 2 teams in the conference left. They lose tiebreakers with Michigan and AF, so they need to beat both of the top 2 teams in conference to not be in last. Not impossible but not likely.
|2 years 44 weeks ago||great effort||
Wow. What a win for Michigan. Basically guarantees they will make the conference tournament.
MVP has got to be Lott for this game. Wins 21 of 24 face offs, including in OT. He'll easily win conference specialist of the week.
Defense played fairly well. Not a lot of easy things for Bellarmine, and buckled down in crunch time. Offense was also very balanced. Only Paras had more than 1 goal. A road conference victory against a pretty good team, and a stout defensive team is a great sign.
This team had 2 goals for the year. Beat OSU (obviously), and make the post season. Looks like one is locked up. People also thought 4 wins for this team would be optimistic. We're basically halfway through the year and they've met those expectations.
|2 years 48 weeks ago||Rest of the schedule||
I think we've also got a chance to get to 5 or more wins this year. We should be favored against HPU, Furman and St. joes, and should have a chance against Bellarmine and Robert Morris. Maybe even Air Force if we catch them on an off day, but I feel like they match up poorly for us. The rest of our schedule is a good Fairfield team and a bunch of NCAA tournament regulars.
Would certainly take some luck and we'd have to avoid injuries, but it's possible if this team keeps getting better as the year goes on.
|2 years 48 weeks ago||Exciting||
What an exciting game. I was literally shaking when we went to overtime, just as I was during under the lights 1.
By the way, I think in all 4 program wins, we scored double digits. 14 against Mercer, 11 against St Joes, 20 against Mercer and now 14 against UDM.
|2 years 48 weeks ago||Great win||
What a great win for this team. They have definitely taken a step forward from last year. They are still very young and prone to mistakes and mental lapses, but when they were on, they were able to impose their will.
Brad Lott should get the game ball. He was completely dominant on face offs. UDM just had to put a long pole out there and hope to win the ground ball. He was also dominant in the 4th and overtime, when it really counted.
One guy I was disappointed in was Kyle Jackson, right until the 4th quarter. For a while, it looked like he was just content to pass off the ball to his teammates, and wasn't being aggressive. That was the same fault I had as a player, so maybe I was being too critical. Thankfully though, when the game was on the line, he took control, and netted a hat trick. With the game on the line, you want your best players to step up, and he certainly did tonight, along with a few others.
|2 years 49 weeks ago||Great win||
Exceeded my expectations and that should really help this team with their confidence. They needed a win, and got a convincing one.
|3 years 1 day ago||No way||
No way he keeps that offer if dantonio sees this. After the season they had they won't have any trouble getting a QB, and won't need to deal with this kind of thing. Compared to the Carlos Hyde video this looks way worse.
|3 years 1 week ago||Underclassmen||
On the bright side, the big ten keeping upperclassmen around while other leagues lose them could help the B1G close the gap on the field.
|3 years 1 week ago||Yeah||
Yeah, and with a 4.3 GPA. Very impressive.
|3 years 1 week ago||Ash||
Arkansas was pretty poor, but I think Mattison would have been able to do better than 89th in the country in points against with that talent considering the turn-around he had with the 2011 Defense. I am definitely not sold on Ash.
|3 years 1 week ago||Logan||
Gerald was a very solid goalie, and losing him adds a lot more question marks for the team. I've heard good things about Zonino, so I guess we'll see how he does now.
I also wonder how a goalie would get an injury like that. I remember last year against Bellarmine he came out to check an attackman on a break and came away with a bum shoulder that did not look good.
Good luck on the recovery Gerald!
|3 years 3 weeks ago||B.O.B.||
Saturday after the rumors came out, B.O.B. supposedly talked with some of his recruits heading to the UA all american game and told them he wasn't going anywhere and what was in the news was just made up. I don't remember his exact words, but it came secondhand from TomVH.
If true, I'd feel bad for those kids being lied to, although B.O.B. was really in a tough spot.
Also tough luck for Penn State.
|3 years 8 weeks ago||Media Training||
I know that freshman lacrosse players had to take media training during their first few weeks on campus, learning how to talk to reporters and learning about building their personal brand for how they want to be known. I'm sure the football guys are even more prepared and likely practiced.
|3 years 10 weeks ago||Charlie Weis||
Charlie Weis. Schematic advantage for the win!
|3 years 12 weeks ago||B1G Lax||
B1G Lax starts in 2015. This spring they are still in the ECAC.
In addition to the above and the ECAC teams, I heard a rumor Maryland was making a trip to the big house and we would play all but one of the future B1G lax teams. Hoping that comes true.
|3 years 14 weeks ago||This huge||
This is a huge get for JP. In 2016 JP has 2 of the top 12 recruits locked up. One attack and one middie. Generally those top 10-ish kids only go to ACC schools, and for JP to get 2 in one year, for a team that only has 2 wins ever is huge. It'll probably be 2018 or so before these top kids really have a shot at reaching their potential (which seems like forever), but I'm excited already.
|3 years 17 weeks ago||Henry Adams||
Jamie Munro (who used to be the Denver coach) was raving about this kid earlier this week. He plays for a powerhouse program and looks very good. His highlights looked a bit like summer ball to me (cause it was), as a lot of defenders were playing with flat feet, etc., but there is no question the kid has some serious skills. His hand/eye coordination is great and he can catch the ball at crazy angles near the crease and get off a quick shot on cage. Would love to see him in some non-summer league games playing at full speed.
Regardless though, this is a huge pickup for JP. I've said all along that the hardest thing to recruit for him will be elite attack, and a top 10 recruit at attack can do wonders for a program. One Peter Baum, Mark Matthews or even Logan Schuss type could really elevate the team quickly.
|3 years 20 weeks ago||Fly fishing||
Is that guy going fly fishing again and Saban is worried that his players will miss practice to go with him?
|3 years 22 weeks ago||Beard||
According to the CTK video Miller and Heitzman both have camp beards.
|3 years 25 weeks ago||Nice||
Looks like a quite a few challenging games, but a few winnable games as well. Florida, Northwestern and Hopkins all in a row is one tough 3 game stretch for a new team.
|3 years 25 weeks ago||Thanks||
Thanks for posting this. Heidt won best goalie and Young is a middie I've heard about before. Those two positions seem to be where our recruiting excelled in our first class with Jackson, Hernandez and Logan.
A top attackman will be tough to come by for a new program, but I'm hoping we can land some stud defenders soon. Putting a decent defense in front of Logan will really help this team improve quickly.
|3 years 30 weeks ago||#27||
Already got a couple #27 jerseys! I have been waiting for someone to breakthrough with that number since Calvin Bell.
|3 years 32 weeks ago||Emil||
I guess I don't know enough about the specific rules, but if he stayed enrolled at the university, would that cause an APR hit as well? Doesn't seem all that different to someone who blows out their knee and chooses to stay in school and get their degree. Those don't seem like "academic" issues that should cause a hit to the APR to me.
|3 years 33 weeks ago||Hoke||
I wonder how Hoke's recruits would match up on the size/weight measurables in that chart. I'd guess closer than bleacher report might expect.
|3 years 33 weeks ago||Slightly||
Big ten has last year's laxpower #3, 5, 12, & 14.
ACC has #2, 4, 10, 15 & 17
4 top 20's vs. 5 top 20's. 2 top 5's vs. 2 top 5's. 4 top 15's vs. 4 top 15's. I stand by my slightly, while acknowledging that laxpower isn't perfect so there is of course plenty of subjectivity with this type of analysis no matter how you measure it.
|3 years 33 weeks ago||Great news||
I'm definitely excited about this from a lacrosse perspective. Michigan will now play in the strongest conference nationally that will get an auto-bid, and the conference will only be slightly behind the ACC now. It also gets Michigan a lot more lacrosse exposure on the east coast in the Maryland recruiting hot-bed. Both of those things will help Michigan become a nationally competitive program relatively quickly.
Only question remaining to be discussed is what happens with JHU's TV deal with ESPN. Big Ten has been reluctant to show lacrosse games, however if they are looking to get into TV sets on the east cost, this is certainly one way to do it.
|3 years 44 weeks ago||Friday||
I think they also got a tour of NBC sports studios and a EOS partners, which is an investment company on Friday. Very cool that the guys are getting a chance to do these types of things off the field. The UM network is a great thing, hopefully the recruits notice.
|3 years 44 weeks ago||Progress||
Capilla, I think this team is progressing along just as we'd expect, and to be honest games like this and Hobart have exceeded my expectations. Next year I think we will still be underdogs in these types of games given that we will be playing almost all freshman and sophomores at that point, but the third year in I'm expecting the big jump as we will have two experienced classes in, plus a third group of Freshman. There are a few Freshman on the field right now who look like they are ready for this level of play, but are still inconsistent and a handful of guys who are ready should not be enough to be competitive against this type of schedule just yet.
Two weeks in a row we had a chance in the 4th quarter to actually beat an ECAC team. We were right in both games and neither seemed to look like a fluke.
|3 years 45 weeks ago||Nice||
I'm pretty excited to see him develop once he gets some more talent around him. Watching the inter squad scrimmage last fall it looked like he was easily te teams best feeder.
|3 years 45 weeks ago||Competition||
Not sure if that's the case. I believe Hobart has been a sub-par faceoff team so far this year, so it may just be that as Brad Lott is out (who was near 50% the last couple games himself), Wylie is facing some favorable competition. Sounds like we might be close to having two options now, which is huge.
|3 years 45 weeks ago||Encouraging||
That sounds lilke an encouraging first half. I think Hobart is better than their record indicates. And for Michigan to do that while a number of their regular players are out is very encouraging. Hopefully our second half keeps it close and we can take a step forward.
|3 years 46 weeks ago||HPU||
Interested to see how this one goes. I'm not sure we can say we are favored to be honest. How we looked against Marquette and how we looked against Army is such a big variance who knows what team will show up tonight. High Point is inconsistent as well given how young they are.
I'm hoping we can just avoid the transition and make them play us 6v6. Teams seem to get on runs against us with their transition and I'd like to see us correct that against a team we should be able to match up with.
|3 years 46 weeks ago||Surprised||
I thought this might be a trap game, but did not expect us to play this poorly. Happy we did well on face offs and in goal, but we really struggled even getting shots on cage. Turnovers were up and clearing below 80% so maybe that contributed to the shot problems. Hopefully the young guys are just experiencing some inconsistencies as they grow.
Also really surprised by Marquette given how well we did against them in the scrimmage. Maybe it's good news for us.
|3 years 47 weeks ago||Maybe not||
I'm not sure the law of large numbers applies here. The law of large numbers needs the players to be chosen randomly. The players are not really random. They are genetically bigger, faster, stronger, competitive, and probably testosterone driven than most of the rest of us. If sexual orientation is based on genetics as many argue, we are looking at a portion of the population that shares quite a few genetic traits and probably doesn't represent the full spectrum of genetic possibilities.
Likely there have more than a few though.
|3 years 48 weeks ago||Game||
Watched the 2nd half, and it looked like after Michigan went down early in the 4th they upped the pressure and that led to BU running away with it. Watching the offense, it looks like we still don't quite have the athletes to break down the defense 6v6 consistently. I saw a lot of shots running away from the goal, forced feeds and shots from far out, which shows me that we're still outmatched physcially.
Kyle Jackson did some nice things, and the man-up looked to at least generate some looks. Lott looks like an upgrade, although it seems BU adjusted to him by the 4th.
|3 years 49 weeks ago||charge and block||
I think both the charge and block calls need to go as they stand now. Taking a guys legs out shouldn't be allowed, but basketball is the only sport when a defender gets a foul for being in the offensive players way. Just man up and let the guys play.
Those two calls turn most pickup basketball games into a jerry springer drama fest. Ruining the game at the grass roots level and encouraging a culture of unnecessary drama.
|3 years 50 weeks ago||face offs||
Heard we still had trouble with face offs. Anyone know what the deal was with brad Lott? He wasn't on the inactive list the team twitter account posted yesterday, so I wonder if he is low on the depth chart or was suspended or something.
|3 years 51 weeks ago||wow||
I would love to see this happen. Having two traditional powerhouse programs in a league associated with the midwest would really help legitimize B1G lacrosse and help the game expand beyond the east coast, both of which will help Michigan get the lacrosse recruits they need and make them a better know commodity on the east coast. Of course that will make it pretty difficult for Michigan to compete for conference championships, but in the long run should be a good thing.
|4 years 11 hours ago||Defense||
Defense I think is more correlated to athleticism, size and effort and less correlated to skill, so it seems intuitive that it wouldn't leave you. Your opponent could get hot and make lots of shots in a row, but if they are all contested, you are getting blocks and steals and not allowing drives, I think it is less likely so. By being a good defensive team, you can get the opponent out of their game by forcing them to take bad shots, hurried shots, etc and that doesn't really depend much on luck but more so on effort and athleticism.
There would be variance in the shooting percentage of your opponents as they have good or bad luck from time to time, but forcing them into harder shots via defensive effort seems like something you can control. And when the opponent consistently takes harder shots, it makes it much less likely they will catch on fire offensively.
|4 years 3 weeks ago||Punts||
I thought Hoke said returning kicks, as is in kickoffs not punts.
I'm not sure I'd want Denard returning punts if his grip isn't strong enough to throw the ball. Could make catching the ball and holding onto it tough. If he muffs a kickoff he will have time to just pick it up before defenders get there. But not on a punt, they will already be there, and punts are trickier to begin with. You want experience and sure hands to return punts.
|4 years 5 weeks ago||Team rules||
Alcohol, even if you are of legal age, often is a violation of team rules when you are in season. I don't know the football team's specific rules though so who knows.
And that was a very well written apology.
|4 years 11 weeks ago||Tough schedule||
Even new program high point could be a challenge. They tied NCAA tournament team Colgate last month in a scrimmage. Scrimmage yes, but sounds like they've got some talent.
Having watched the intra squad scrimmage, michigans offense should give them some opportunities to pull off some upsets this year. The defense is very young, and it may be a while before they play together as a team defense, so until that happens may we have trouble keeping pace with some teams. Hopefully that happens by the end of the year in time for the UDM game.
|4 years 11 weeks ago||Size||
Last year had 8 games, so they either had to put 8 small tickets on one "sheet" or 4 big tickets on 2 "sheets". This year we have six games, which fits on one sheet but with smaller sizes than last year.
|4 years 11 weeks ago||Maybe not||
Devin took a while to get going today. With no practice he may not have gotten going last week.
|4 years 11 weeks ago||Gardner||
He makes such good decisions to pull it down and run or to scramble. Gotta believe he starts next year.
|4 years 20 weeks ago||Maxwell||
Come on guys, give the guy a break, remember, he was groomed for this..Ha!

Lebron and the president could tell you who he is...
|4 years 21 weeks ago||Great question||
I think we've got to play a possession game, and shorten the length of the game overall. Use the full playclock. Knowing that bama will be heavy on running the ball, they should use up a lot of clock as well. If we can get a few key stops and use up some play clock, that will give us a shot.
Offensively I think we've got to find a way to get Denard loose. Bama has never seen a Denard like QB, and if we can find ways to get him loose and get them guessing and "thinking" it will really open things up for us. So to do that, I'm thinking we need screens/draws to slow down their rush, attempt some long passes to keep them from loading the box, and try to get Denard to scramble when the first or second read isn't there. I'd even consider calling some designed scrambles where we send guys deep to open up some space and Denard delays his run.

Interesting hire, glad to hear he is a great culture fit and excited to hear more about his philosophies and see what he can do.
|4 years 23 weeks ago||2013-2014||
Quint kessinich said that JP was "killing it on the recruiting trail" with regard to the 2013-2014 kids on one of his ESPNU broadcasts during the NCAA tournament. It won't be long before we are competing for conference titles if these classes are top 15.

Curious, what kind of lacrosse stuff did they have? Any helmets or gloves?
|4 years 23 weeks ago||Tires||
Nothing is more important than snow tires in the winter. I have driven sports cars basically every winter, and with snow tires I never once had an issue, and always felt more in control compared to driving my wife's SUV with regular tires.
|4 years 23 weeks ago||Team rankings||
Would be interesting to tie a team ranking into this. So if Alabama returns 40% of last years #1 defense and air force returned 40% of the #85 defense (or whatever it is) Alabama would show as returning more.
|4 years 23 weeks ago||pack it in||
I think we are talking about 2 different things here. We are talking about putting all 6 defensemen 10-12 yards from the goal, or putting all defensemen like 5 yards or less from the goal.
If a defender is sitting 10-12 yards out and not pressuring effectively, a good shooter will easily put it past the goalie. All you need to do is have enough velocity that the goalie can't react or shoot around the defender (use the defender as a screen) and surprise the goalie.
If we put all defenders 5 yards away, that would mean the offensive player would be essentially trying to put the ball past 7 goalies (ie shooting through the trees).
In either case, though, if the defense isn't pressuring the ball, under the new rule this wouldn't constitute stalling.
|4 years 24 weeks ago||Pack it in||
We tried that numerous times with my high school team for end of game practice situations. Rarely worked with a decent shooter, which was not what we expected. And it wasn't defenders moving out of the way. Maybe d1 defenders will be big enough to truly fill the whole cage.
I also don't like the idea of defenders being coached to take shots in the chest. Once the first kid goes into cardiac arrest because the coach made him jump in front of shots without the proper chest protector, there will be some serious uproar.
|4 years 24 weeks ago||Face offs||
I don't like the rule of changing it to 12 inches away. Would completely change the skill of that position and make it more like face offs in hockey. Basically just a scrum. Part of what makes lacrosse unique is that teams can go on runs spurred by face off dominance.
I think the shot clock rule is a good compromise. With it coming after the stalling call, it gives teams a bit more time to be patient. It would be good if we could get back towards two way middies. All that subbing after every possession change doesn't help for the casual fan.
|4 years 24 weeks ago||Looks like a test||
Shane won the accuracy on day two, passed Dilfers special test and wasn't even mentioned after the day two rankings. Shane was saying how he thinks he should be ranked up there when he was interviewed, so the TV broadcast seems to be painting the story that Shane has an entitlement attitude. And the fact that Dilfer made the special test for Shane confirms what Dilfer is thinking.
Based on that, this seems like Dilfers ways of teaching a lesson, and to be honest, being named to the elite 11 won't win you one game in college, but learning that lesson might light his fire and keep him hungry.
Also found it interesting that it was said woulard had the strongest arm, while Shane's arm strength wasn't even mentioned.
|4 years 25 weeks ago||Already happened||
Michigan has won recruiting battles against at least duke, Syracuse, Princeton, Maryland, Georgetown and I heard one kid had interest from Virginia, although I don't know if that means an offer. We are doing surprisingly well so far in recruiting.
|4 years 25 weeks ago||Osu||
So how many of their commits had a Michigan offer?
|4 years 26 weeks ago||My plan||
Keep playing football, but every dime from football for the next X (3?) years goes to the victims and sexual abuse charities.
Doesn't punish the players, students, local businesses, or big ten. It benefits the victims and helps those who may need help in the future, plus hits Penn State right in the wallet.

They also watched it to see what our reaction was to the lacrosse coverage that Tim did when deciding whether or not elevate the team to varsity status.
|4 years 29 weeks ago||Jp||
A bummer to lose Judd, I know a few local coaches who were really impressed with him. But I gotta trust JP. Like Hoke he seems to make all the right moves, so I am not worried at all, he will find the right guy.
|4 years 36 weeks ago||Bad idea||
Yep, I agree completely that it is a bad idea. You would obviously have the intentional missed shot, but also it would cause a lot of offenses to hurry. When they hurry, you will see forced passes and shots, and as a result I think you will see fewer 6v6 goals.
I would rather see them adjust the rules now so that if you have a stall you won't get the ball back on a missed shot backup, in addition to not being allowed to leave the box. I am OK with stalling with 3 minutes to go, but not in the second quarter, and I think that adjustment would take care of that.
|4 years 37 weeks ago||Highlight videos||
Here is a link with in depth coverage on most players in the class, including highlight videos for a good number. Unfortunately nothing for Kyle Jackson, who I think we are all excited to see.
|4 years 37 weeks ago||yes||
do a search on greatlaxstate.com. He did a bunch of hello posts and a summary of the class when they signed. Great site.
BTW, that video was made by my teammate at Michigan, who has gone on to win a number of Emmy's. Guy makes some amazing videos.

From his tweet it sounded like he had no idea the alabama coach (bobby williams) was visiting him, and then turned down the opportunity to meet him. Bobby was told to just leave a business card and sent on his way. I think coaches just show up a lot of times.
