Also remember at the beginning of the year, when asked about who he was going to go to in late shot clock situations coach said Horford. They clearly had big plans for him coming into the year, including the 2-big lineups, that never transpired.
I watched both of Horford's 3-pointer attempts this year and I also watched Beilein coach up the most efficient offense in KenPom recorded history despite losing McGary.
It ends up very unfortunate for Horford, but you can't really second guess Beilein's decisions.
|13 weeks 2 days ago||The correct way to answer it||
The correct way to answer it is to not answer it at all and deflect... the same manner in which Nik Stauskas deflected similar questions in his radio interviews the last week or so.
For all the talk of Jon's zen-masterism, it's not on display here, the guy is clearly upset a lot right now.
|13 weeks 2 days ago||fouls||
Given his fouls per 40 minutes, was it even realistic to think he could play 30 minutes a contest?

I don't like how Jon is handling this.
Horford has no business spouting out "I know what Mitch is going to do, he already told me." It smacks of an uncouthness I didn't think Jon possessed. He just sounds really angry and bitter - and you don't typically serve yourself well by doing a lot of talking when you're upset.
And then the real truth: "Transferring is something that my family has been trying to persuade me to do for four years"

The Stauskas family has been working towards this moment (NBA) for years. It's well deserved, and while we want him to win us more Big Ten championships and Final Fours, can't deny the kid his due.
The most telling sign (apart from the moment of unguarded honesty by Stauskas' dad a few months back) was when Beilein was asked about the scholarship situation being 1 above the limit with the new class coming in and, without missing a beat, Beilein deadpanned "It'll work itself out".
There's a reason coach isn't worried about the scholarship thing and is on the hunt for impact transfer players this season.

If you're told you could work your way into the first round with a few great workouts, that kind of money being that close (regardless of what your true odds are) is the kind of thing that sways people, regardless of where their families are. And keep in mind 18 to 21 year olds aren't typically known for their sound decision making.
You don't want GR3 to go the route of Manny or Darius but he has a bigger upside than both of those guys. Both GR3 and Mitch were feeling regret at various points over the season for their decision to return.

|15 weeks 4 days ago||There may not be a 9-seed||
There may not be a 9-seed differential between these two teams but it is at least outside the margin of error. Michigan is the better team on the average night which is why they went 15-3 vs 11-7 in their leagues. Sure, we could have a first half @Purdue or @Indiana type of game, but UT laid an even greater number of eggs during the regular season. But it's not the third game in three days so don't expect a Charlotte or MSU BTT type of shooting night.
I'm sick of hearing how any team with a big man is going to crush Michigan and fails to mention the boatloads of NBA talent on Michigan's roster that will reign death from above on a decent night.
When we get down to only four teams remaining by Sunday, it will be a lot harder to ignore this Michigan team.

People are confusing 2013 Big East Louisville and 2014 AAC Louisville.
2013 Strength of schedule: 9.
2014: Strength of schedule 108.
Of any team seeded 11 or higher (44 teams) in the tournament Louisville's SOS ranks 43rd. The only team with a worse strength of schedule with a tournament seed higher than 11 is.... Wichita State.
Louisville has pushed to the maximum the margin-aware methods of efficiency ratings by absolutely murdering inferior competition. Here's their record against NCAA tournament teams this year:
(6) UNC L 84-93
(14) LA-Lafayette W 113-74
(8) Kentucky L 66-73
(8) Memphis L 67-73
(7) UConn W 76-64
(5) Cincinnati L 66-69
(5) Cincinnati W 58-57
(8) Memphis L 66-72
(7) UConn W 81-48
(7) UConn W 71-61
That's a 5-5 record against tournament teams, none higher than a 5-seed whom they split the season series with. They beat the same 7-seed three times and lost to a 6-seed and three games to 8-seeds.
Think twice before following the herd on Louisville 2014.

I think the tournament run Nintendo analogies would have been better served via Mike Tyson's Punch-Out.
Michigan can expect to overwhelm Piston Honda with their offense in the opening weekend, but they might get tripped up by a team with an equally powerful offense, Bald Bull, in the second weekend.. but even then you're at worst a coin flip.
Michigan will have problems when they run into teams that can score points and have a lot of size (Iowa, Wisconsin, Arizona, Noah Vonleh, ISU's Ejim, AJ Hammons, Sandman, Super Macho Man).
The good news is this year, unlike past years, there are no Anthony Davis Kentucky Mike Tyson's in the field. Michigan will have a real chance in every game.
|17 weeks 6 days ago||Villanova and Syracuse are||
Villanova and Syracuse are locks for Buffalo. Even though UM might finish slightly higher than Syracuse on the S-Curve the committee will basically say Buffalo/Milwaukee are equidistant and work to minimize travel for the top seeds overall by shipping Michigan to Milwaukee.
|17 weeks 6 days ago||It's super easy to predict||
It's super easy to predict what teams are in or out every year... you can get 64 of 68 teams just by glancing through the end of the season. Last year over half of the matrix picked all 68 teams correctly and over 80% had 67 of 68 teams.
How teams will be seeded is much more delicate and takes some degree of reverse-engineering how the NCAA committee is going to decide things that year.

You need Minnesota to win because right now they are 51st in the RPI depriving Michigan of 2 Top-50 wins.
|18 weeks 1 day ago||Villanova and Virginia both||
Villanova and Virginia both need to lose a game. Minnesota, Stanford, and Nebraska all need to stay in the top-50 RPI. Michigan needs to win tonight, win the BTT against Wisconsin in the finals.
After all of that they then need to hope that the committee decided they needed to have alternate scenarios that allows for the winner of the BTT final to have an impact on seeding since the game concludes 30 mins prior to the selection show.
I mean... what if the BTT final goes into double OT? They could announce the brackets before the game is even over!
What are you thinking Delaney? OH RIGHT.... you're the only game on in primetime on selection sunday == TV eyeballs == TV money.

Minnesota and Stanford are sitting 47th and 48th in the RPI also. Nebraska is at 50th. If those teams drop even just a little bit Michigan's 10-5 "Top 50" wins suddenly becomes a pedestrian 5-5. That's your difference between a 2-seed and a 3-seed at this point and it's largely out of Michigan's hands.
Although a run to the BTT finals would end all speculation. It's just that Michigan prefers to end up opposite Wichita State or Florida... not Arizona.

Nebraska will finish the conference at .500. That's great but COY isn't solely based on "performance versus expectation" it's also based on end results. When you win league championships you get the inside tracks for these accolades and rightfully so.

Tourney seeding was fickle, UM got barely bumped from a 3-seed due to tournament not wanting rematches. And Michigan only missed a one-seed because of the Brust 3 pointer and the indiana rollout. Improvement by the freshmen will probably be offset by them getting worn down as the year goes on.
The team creeps closer to the bubble, Arizona is the last chance for a marquee non-conference victory, and there are a ton of good teams in the B1G - Iowa/Minnesota in addition to the elite group of MSU/OSU/Wisconsin - that are going to give the Wolverines fits.
The players have so much heart and never give up, they just lack that killer instinct and dig themselves huge holes. Hope they can back their way into the tourney and then make a big run.

Actually, only 33 points (one defensive td vs Iowa). They came on 3 TD drives, two of which were set up by turnovers on short fields and 4 FGs.
Over that span Michigan had 30 drives on offense. They accrued 434 yards of offense or roughly 14 yards per drive. They punted 16 times, committed 4 turnovers, 4 field goals and 3 touchdowns. The half ended mercifully three times. They averaged 1.1 points per possession against the #4, 13, 43 and 65th ranked scoring defenses.
Now to correct this fallacy that the spread was worse versus tough opponents in 2010 than our historically bad 2013 offense:
Over those five 2010 losses Michigan only had 28 offensive first half possessions. They scored 4 touchdowns (all of which were drives of 60+ yards) and kicked two field goals. They also missed 3 field goals, turned the ball over 7 times, punted 10 times and ran out the half twice.
Over those 28 drives they gained 994 yards of offense or roughly 35.5 yards per drive. They scored 1.2 points per possession although if they had had a competant place kicker like Brendan Gibbons back then (/sarcasm) it would have been 1.5 ppp. This was against the #5, 7, 25, 39, and 49th ranked scoring defenses.
TLDR Stat Conclusion:
In the first half of its losses the 2010 offense played against slightly better defenses but moved the ball more than twice as effectively and scored more total points despite having 18% fewer possessions.

|34 weeks 3 days ago||Indiana 2013 == 2009/2010||
This year if Indiana's QB doesn't suffer a thumb injury they were going to score to go ahead in the 4th Quarter. Instead their backup turned it over and then their injured starter tried to come back and forced another INT. That game was much closer than the score would have you believe.

2008 was miles worse off depth and talent wise over team 134 and it's not even close.
|35 weeks 2 days ago||Denard||
The element of "oh it's just a booboo" gives this injury the air of Denards elbow, something we all assumed would go away but ended up being way more serious than was let on. If you go back to injuries last year Beilein was never coy or dodgy about Morgans ankle or Horfords knees, so why now?
|35 weeks 6 days ago||Lineup||
Best five-man line-up sans McGary, expect to see these guys get the vast majority of minutes against ISU and in Puerto Rico:
Those 5 were all at least +15 +/- tonight and no one else on Michigan's roster was positive. Beilein was experimenting with a lot of stuff but that's the way it's going to work out when the chips are down in a couple of weeks.
But this team can be a whole other beast swapping McGary for Horford.
Also for the poo-poo-ers. This is an exhibition: see #1 Kentucky "scraping" by Montevallo (lol?) in a similar game tonight as well.
|35 weeks 6 days ago||Yep.||
I'm not a basketball defensive expert but it appeared that Coleman's three pointers were all well contested.
Still there is definitely some sloppy passing going on and/or miscommunications that msut be worked out if UM is going to have any success on the road against a good/great team.

If Gardner's injury is serious, then you can write it all off. He's also a lot less likely to be in Notre Dame form that banged up even if he does play. He looked one or two steps slower than in previous weeks on every scramble today.

They have the 121st ranked total defense and 112th ranked scoring defense both of which are significantly worse than any other team Michigan has played this year (CMU, Akron, UConn included).
Indiana is good-to-great on offense, but worst ever on defense. Almost an exact replica of 2010 Michigan!

Going to be a shootout.
Dink and dunk and spread is an awful matchup for our defense. Going to need a big performance out of our D and the offense to not set too many possessions on fire or it's going to be a looooooong bye week staring down an almost certain Loss against the Spartans.
I really wish I could find a reason to be more optimistic at this point!

|1 year 13 weeks ago||baseline||
Expectations should be that all four guys leave. Hardaway seems like the only tweener as far as first round vs second round and he seems as likely as Burke to be gone (i.e. 95%+).
McGary has the most variance because they'd be basing his draft on potential and five good tournament games but he and GR3 and Burke are all somewhere between the lottery and first round == gonezo.
I would be (pleasantly) shocked if any of those four come back for another season.

Nothing we can do about it but enjoy the fact he came back for this year. He came back because of an early tournament exit last time, let's hope he gets his fill this year, then we can get excited about the D. Walton era.
However, I would love to see THJr and GR3 back for another go.
|1 year 16 weeks ago||what if||
Would your expectations for this team be wildly different if a half court buzzer beater not gone in, a second half collapse hadn't occurred in Happy Valley, and a couple of free throws or layup made at the end of the regular season?
The difference between a 26-7 and a 29-4 team is razor thin, but our expectaions of the latter would be final four or disappointment!
Michigan is the highest rated 4 seed. Their KenPom efficiency sits at .9283 just a hair over 2011 UConn's .9270. They'll be playing "at home". With officials that might know how to call a foul.
I don't know if I'll be laying the points vs SDSt, but I'm also pretty sure Trey Burke's last game as a Wolverine will not be this weekend.

SDSt 102. AdjO 110.4(39) AdjD 103.1(209) [Other 13 seeds: 49,57,80,145]
Chance of victory increased 122% from last year's opening round!!!
Last year Michigan was worst 4 seed playing best 13 seed. This year they are the best 4 playing the worst 13 (Montana is a 14 bumped up due to travelling, switching with Valpo, LOL).
SDSt's defense is worse than Northwestern, I will be absolutely shocked (and lose a lot of money) if Michigan doesn't put up at least 80 points in the win.
|1 year 16 weeks ago||SDSt||
South Dakota has the #209 ranked defense. (For reference: Penn St #135, Nebraska #115, Northwestern #150). There will be no first round upset this year.
Michigan struggles vs teams with Elite defenses such as Kansas, Georgetown, or Florida. This team has sweet-16 berth and no further written all over it.

Play the Final Four on Sunday.

In a hockey game, that's a penalty shot ten times out of ten. Yet in basketball, they can go to video replay and look at a guy getting taken down on a breakaway and not call it. pretty sure he only did that because stauskas was unable to return and it was a choice between Vogrich or Morgan/McGary at the same time and Morgan wound up fouling out and UM almost losing because of it.
|1 year 18 weeks ago||keep in mind||
The outcome of the BTT title game has no bearing on the actual seeding because it occurs after the selection committee has already made that decision.
UM's chance at a 1-seed pretty much went out the window with PSU.
Win one more game (@Purdue or first round BTT) and 3-seed is the floor.
|1 year 19 weeks ago||hmm||
Beat PSU & Purdue and a 2-seed is pretty much locked up. So we've got that going for us, which is nice.
|1 year 19 weeks ago||reframing||
Compared to how the basketball team has been for the past 15 years, with 4 games to go in the regular season this year's team's floor is now a 3-seed. That's pretty damn awesome.
|1 year 19 weeks ago||toss up||
Without Morgan's D, Michigan might lose this game. Zero offensive rebounds in the second half for Illinois and they had eight in the first. He was everywhere and yet never out of position on defense. He was the highest player +/- on either team by a wide margin (Morgan +18, Burke +5). Morgan's impact doesn't show up on the statsheet but he was just as important as Burke was today.
|1 year 19 weeks ago||morgan||
Michigan was +18 with him on the floor. Such a huge impact player on this team. If not for that stupid Wisconsin buzzer beater (do we have to endure buzzer beaters every game now it seems?) Michigan would be in prime position to run at the B1G title.
Still, there are not many teams that will match up to Michigan in the NCAA prior to the sweet 16 and likely not until the Elite 8.

I was wondering that about Izzo too being on the court next to the players in the middle of the action like wtf.
Stauskas played well on offense on the road. He had that one play where he got a rebound, pump faked, got his man in the air and then got clobbered with no call.
Hope this team responds well to adversity!

Cackle with knowing glee if.... MSU has more than 10 turnovers in the first half.

I think it's very well done, probably one of the most sane polls when you looks at all of the teams' performances and current circumstance instead of preseason expectations.
MSU is playing like a top-5 team. They have arguably the best win of anyone in the country vs Kansas.
Miami just pounded Duke by 30 and beat MSU by almost 20 earlier and have a stranglehold on the ACC. Can you really rank Duke ahead of them at this point given Duke is a .500 team without Kelly who's not coming back soon?
Louisville lost three straight games.
Minnesota lost four straight including one to Northwestern, definitely they should drop out.
Florida may be in a weak conference but they are blowing everyone out that they play.
Oregon is at the top of the Pac-12 pecking order.

|1 year 23 weeks ago||btn2go||
I wish I could pay for this service separate and watch these games legally.
|1 year 24 weeks ago||expectations||
GR3 is going to be a lottery pick this year. Set your expectations accordingly. Burke also will be gone for sure.
THJr? Depends on what the scouts tell him at the end of the year, but my guess is if the team gets to the second weekend of the tournament he'll also be gone for sure.
I worry about losing big man depth to transfer after this year also, but we'll see.
This is THE year. However, Michigan will have a deep and competitive team set up for the next few years. The question of how good can the team be next year depends on the drop off at point guard (a lot), how big of a sophomore jump can Caris make, and can Beilein adapt to a two big man system so that the most talented players can be on the court together (Morgan/McGary).
Walton (Fr) <<<< Burke (So)
|1 year 24 weeks ago||Burke sat the last two mins||
Burke sat the last two mins of the half because Beilein is not happy with him. Hope he can rally the troops and get everyone focused in the second half.

If i'm reading that correctly, he's predicting MSU to be the B1G autobid? I would not want to face Louisville or Butler before the Final Four.
You can pencil in Florida for a #1 seed too. There's not a team that's going to challenge them on their schedule the rest of the way. Florida will knock Duke or Michigan off the top line depending on who stumbles more in conference play. Unless Kansas loses at KState they also will likely not lose more than twice the rest of the way.
