Also slightly late to the party, this was up yesterday.

He was a funny host for an athlete too. His sketch where he was beating up Barney while playing hoops was a classic.

I'm glad to help out and share my views, given that I am in the position of actually having been a SAM at UM. I'd like to think I've been just as vocal (see my posts in the other threads on this) as many on here, as I am deeply embarrased by these guys giving both my frat and my school a bad name.
|4 days 3 hours ago||Back in my day||
(A decade ago, I graduated in Dec 2003), SAM was actually mostly midwest guys. The largest population was from Chicago, followed by Detroit, and then NY/NJ. The East Coast bro guys went into Zeta Beta Tau instead of SAM. But I have heard from friends and fellow alums that have encountered the current crop of SAMs at homecomings and such that they are Jersey Shore douchebros. I wouldn't have joined SAM with its current membership today.
|4 days 3 hours ago||Might be a cousin||
but I don't recall ever meeting a Don Cohodes. My dad would've been involved in SAM at that time frame, but he didn't go to UM, he went to UI-Chicago. But I agree with you this current crop of SAMs should be suspended for a time, and their antics were way worse than anything you or I did as SAMs.
|4 days 6 hours ago||Exactly||
I agree completely, and that is why I have been more than willing to weigh in here as a former SAM, and been willing to post emails I receive like this (though who knows if they'll keep sending them to me if they get word I posted this). The UM chapter needs to publicly boot out the members responsible for the damages, and I am disappointed that they have still not stated just how many were involved in the mayhem. Also, the fact that the other members didn't do anything to stop it also disappoints me. This means to me either one of two things: 1) the # of brothers doing the damages outnumbered the # of brothers not doing the damage, leading those not involved to be afraid to say anything, or 2) the brothers doing the damages were high-ranking members of the fraternity with seniority. If it was freshmen or sophomores, then the juniors and seniors in authority should have been able to put a stop to it if they had any leadership at all. That is why I am so disgusted with the chapter and am willing to publicly state so as a SAM alum from UM.
|4 days 7 hours ago||not quite||
While that would have been fitting, given the tone of the email, the subject line was the far more apt "SAM at Michigan"
|4 days 7 hours ago||I doubt||
that Alan expected it to get posted to mgoblog, but yeah, he should've assumed that it would get out. And if any current SAMs are on here (which there has to be at least one, I'd imagine), I'd love it if they weighed in too. And if any current or former SAMs are mad at me for posting this internal email, well they can hit me up on twitter to bitch if they want, but I frankly don't care if they are upset.

SDT is the sorority that was at the resort with the bros from SAM
|4 days 8 hours ago||I'd be surprised too||
if they booted the chapter for that, considering some of the other things that fraternities have been booted off campuses for both at UM and other schools. I definitely think that they should boot all members that were specifically responsible for the damages though. Those guys should not be in SAM.
|5 days 1 hour ago||Don't remember||
I don't remember, unfortunately. It burned down the summer right before my freshman year. I pledged the house based on the frat promising us pledges that national was going to find us a house for soph year. That didn't materialize, and we had to sell that same story to the following year's pledges. Those kids were smarter than us, and we had a tiny pledge class. National yanked us around, and we ultimately folded. On the plus side, I instead lived with the girl that would become my wife for junior and senior year, instead of with a bunch of frat bros.
|5 days 4 hours ago||Thus far silence||
I have not gotten any emails from either the chapter or the national SAM organizations pertaining to this incident, unless they were caught in my email's spam filter and automatically deleted. I'm actually disappointed that they have not sent out any sort of missive pertaining to this incident. I'm also not very active in the fraternity alum association, having distanced myself from national after they basically hosed our group of brothers. My dad, who used to be on the national executive board for SAM, also has distanced himself from the frat and he hasn't heard anything either. We're both still on their mailing list, but it's been total silence thus far.
In case you're curious, the reason that my dad and I pretty much have cut ties with the frat is because of the way they treated our group of members. Our house had burned down through no fault of our own (it was summer and we weren't there), and they would not help us to get a new house, despite all our best efforts to convince national to help. We wound up folding my sophomore year because of the fact that it's pretty hard to get pledges if you have no house. My senior year at UM, national decided to recolonize the fraternity, bought the new kids the house they have now, and didn't reach out to us in any way to see if we wanted to be involved in the relaunch. That ticked off my dad royally, and he immediately stopped sending them $ as an alum.
As to the SDTs, I doubt they did anything in terms of the damages, this strikes me as more something that the guys did. I am glad that all 6 frats and sororities are getting punished by their national organizations, but they all, SAM especially, need to take more steps to make this right than they have done so far.
|5 days 5 hours ago||Prior, FYI||
Yes, in SAM terminology, prior = chapter president
|5 days 6 hours ago||Communal punishment||
is extremely common in the world we live in. For example: in the military, the whole unit doing pushups because of one guy's mistake. Or the whole football team running wind sprints after one or a handful of players made a mistake. When I played HS football, whenever the defense sacked the QB in practice, the offensive line had to run a lap of the field. Is that fair to the 4 linemen who were blocking their guy when only one guy biffed? No, but that's the way it's done.

Ernie was a legend & a super nice guy. I met him once when I was a kid. I was at a game at Wrigley in the 80s, & before the game they had a veterans game with many retired players including Banks participating. Afterwards he went up into the stands to take his seat, which was coincidentally in the section I was in that day. Despite him getting swarmed by many autograph seekers, including myself, he was gracious & kind, signing things for all of us. I still have the score card he signed for me, framed & hanging on the wall of my office. He was a classy guy & will be missed by all in Wrigleyville. I hope he's playing 2 with Santo right now.

I think they are just stunned and trying to figure out just what the heck he's doing too. Once it sinks in the guy out by the 3 point line comes running in.

I weighed in on this in the original thread when this was first reported, expressing my disappointment in these idiots, and I would like to add more to the discussion now that there are more details out. Here are my thoughts:
1) Now that I know more the extent of the damage (45 rooms damaged, wow!) I am even more disappointed in my former brothers than I was before. They have to pay fully for repairs, out of their own pockets. National SAM should not bail them out here. If either the chapter or national asks me for money as an alum they can take a hike.
2) UM is absolutely right to suspend the frat, and should do so with the other organizations that damaged the other hotel.
3) I am disappointed in the statement released by the chapter president, who stated that the actions were of "a few members" - direct quote. I call bullshit. A few members should not have been allowed to commit that level of damage on that many rooms without the leadership stepping in to stop it. It was clearly way more than just a few members. Unless he has a different definition of "a few" than I do. This is clearly a failure of leadership on his part for not reigning them in, and he should resign as chapter president.
4) If it was truly just a few members, then those members should be kicked out of the frat. If it was pledges that haven't been inducted yet, then they should be immediately barred from any further SAM activity and stripped of their pledge status.
These morons have acted in a way that made both SAM and UM look very poorly, and I will forever be disappointed in these idiots. I am ashamed to be a SAM alum today.

|1 week 4 days ago||Former Sammy here||
I was a member of Sigma Alpha Mu at UM, and I am extremely disappointed in my fellow Sammies. I was part of the prior version of the house, the one that folded when our house burned down (it was during the summer and we weren't there, so it wasn't us). I never met any of the new kids from the recolonized house, but I am still thoroughly disappointed in these guys. I will be curious to see the next email from National as well as from the local chapter, to see how they address this issue. They sure as hell won't be getting any $ from me to cover the cost of this, they should have to pay out of their own pockets.

Fairness to Rosenberg is not allowed. Even a broken clock is right twice a day. Also, if we have to go back nearly a decade to the last time he was right then he shouldn't be a journalist.
|1 week 5 days ago||Thanks but||
I can't take all the credit. I saw the article after Brian on his @mgoblog twitter account sent out the link to the fisking (while cc'ing Rosenberg on the tweet), so I figured I'd share for those not on twitter. Plus it saves Brian the trouble of having to include it in his next Unverified Voracity post.
|1 week 5 days ago||Links FYI||
I had intentionally left the Rosenberg link out of my post to not give that buffoon any traffic from us, and the fisking response is linked in the body of my text where it says "read it here." But I will edit my OP to make the link more clear.

It was posted on Sunday so I dont blame you for missing it, it was probably off front page by Monday if you weren't here on the weekend.
|2 weeks 5 days ago||It all depends on QB play||
If we get good production out of our QB this year, whichever one we go with, and he stays healthy, we have a pretty high ceiling, probably 11-1. If we can't get consistent QB play, I think the floor is about 6-6 or 7-5 with that schedule, as our D should be solid enough to get us to bowl eligibility. But I think 9-3 is the most realistic outcome.
