1 hour 53 min ago	Well,	My undergrad commencement speaker was Jennifer Granholm. I'm not really ashamed to state my belief that she was a shitty, shitty governor -- and wasn't even a Michigan alum at that. But then Obama showed up in 2010 and brought balance back. Even my dad, who's about as anti-Obama as it gets, had to concede that he was a helluva speaker.
1 week 6 days ago	ergh....	...this isn't your fault, but can we put to rest the usage of the word "revitalization" when we talk about these sorts of things (X Games, Gilbertville, etc.)? Detroit is, and always will be, its own city that will NEVER be how it once was.  It will never be the third-largest city in the country, nor will it roar with hyperactivity like it did in the 1950's.  The era has passed. And that's completely fine.   But when I think of revitalization, I think of the massive disparities that are inherent in any urban core (education, literacy, poverty, crime, etc.) and an eventual dismantling of said disparities.  And while I applaud these two guys doing their part, this will do virtually nothing to break down the macroeconomic conditions that allow such things to be perpetuated. It will bring excitement to Detroit, sure.  But let's call it like it is: it's just the X Games, and it'll have just as much effect on "revitalization" as Tigers games or a Monday Night Football matchup will provide.

2 weeks 4 days ago	Sure.	The institution is non-profit; in fact, my own concerns about charters echo yours. I've done loads of research on education policy as well as advised for several charters. I wouldn't have decided to join a board unless I believed strongly in the mission and values of the school itself. Without getting into too much detail -- the goal of turning profit on this school is not even discussed in our meetings. Every dollar is being spent on creating a superb curriculum and finding top-notch instructors.

Throughout the past few decades, there's one other Michigan team I've been just as proud of and would likely get dusty about seeing up there: Daniel Horton and the 2004 NIT championship team.   I care not for the Fab Five, despite their place in Michigan lore.  Bring up the guys that played through a world of shit and mediocre coaches/resources and have them celebrate.
