$18 to be specific, but it's farm to table and is ground short rib with brisket on it. They do have a more classic burger that's $12 but that's probably the cheapest entree on the menu - most common ones other than like steaks are in that 18-25 range.

The place is a nice restaurant on the capitol square (and can't stress the view enough - building it's in is entirely glass), what do you expect? You pay for quality.

Live there currently, will second all of this. With the addition that Graze is a great place for dinner with beautiful views of the capitol building and farm to table food ("normal" entrees like their named burger are around $20, so not too too bad). Can be a lengthy wait on the weekends though.

Wandos is a fun bar to visit near campus as well, if you're into gameday crowds.

Other than the obvious…

Other than the obvious rivalry and "HARBAUGH CAN'T WIN BIG GAMES"/"NO RANKED ROAD WINS SINCE 132 BC" sample size memes I don't see all that much importance to this game.

It's a rivalry game, so just can't be surprised by pretty much anything that happens. But I don't think recruits will stake their choice of college on a single midseason road game just because of #takes.

In the event of a loss we likely have to win out to get to the B1G CCG; if we win we preserve having a 1 game buffer (so long as that 1 loss isn't to OSU). Regardless of win or lose a B1G championship is still very much in play.

He's saying the Big Ten hasn…

He's saying the Big Ten hasn't had a championship game for very long. The Game used to be a battle for the conference, not the division.

Uh, because we can? Why not?…

Uh, because we can? Why not? It's possible to discuss those match-ups while simultaneously considering their outcome's impact on the Game's meaning with respect to the divisional standings.

Again, we're fans. Discussing a future matchup doesn't mean the team won't be prepared for the next week's. It's obviously different if you're playing the game, but we're not. We're just watching.

Just because Thanksgiving is first doesn't mean I can only think about that and have to wait for December to make Christmas/New Year's plans.

If we beat MSU, Indiana, and…

If we beat MSU, Indiana, and Rutgers, losing to Penn State won't matter - winner of the Game goes to the championship.

I never understand all the…

I never understand all the people saying "Beat state first then we can talk." Like, I get it if you're on the team, sure, take it one week at a time. But we're fans and thankfully free to speculate as much as we damn well please with no impact on how the team performs. Why do I have to limit myself to only thinking about the very next week?

Anyway, I agree with the general sentiment. I's nice to be at a place where if the team performs as it should in 3/4 of the next games we'll be headed to OSU with the winner going to the championship game. But as long as you operate under the assumption OSU will beat MSU, winning versus state in particular doesn't matter; just can't lose 2 of the next 4. Obviously winning versus state matters for other reasons, just not really for going to the championship.

Mostly a step in the right direction

First off, I'm not a huge fan of that article. Instead, the OP should link to the umich article. It's much less sensationalist and contains more of the actual science.

I also want to clear up that cytochrome c is not actually a molecule involved in photosynthesis. Rather, it is an electron carrier in cellular respiration. Minor difference, but it makes me nervous about the validity of the rest of the article.

Anyway... this is mostly just a step in the right direction. From what I gather, the paper doesn't really claim to have created an important application for this yet. This is just the basis for future development, which could take quite awhile. What they've done is figured out a mechanism to create self assembling complexes of biological molecules and inorganic (created) materials (in this case, a semi conductor).

In their experiment they were able to make these complexes convert nitrate (NO3-) to nitrite (NO2-) and O2. Nitrate is toxic at high levels in water, but in most circumstances it never gets high enough (it usually happens on farms near lakes/rivers where too much fertilizer was used). The problem they ran into is that this process eventually degraded the complexes enough to where they didn't work any longer, something they can work on fixing.

What I imagine the process these partiles use is something like:

sunlight excites electrons in semi conductors -> electron transferred to cytochrome c (a soluble electron carrier) -> electrons used in other enzymatic processes that convert nitrate to nitrite.

Using this for carbon fixation is a whole nother animal. It warrants future study, but we're still a long ways away from that.

Only problem

Is that service within the stadium (at least in the student section) is absolutely terrible. Getting a single text message through can take at least 50 tries. Attempting to load a website/espn app? Good luck. Maybe in the next few years it will get better, but for now fan vision sounds like it'd be a pretty useful thing, though I've never seen or used one.

Since he's 8, iPad. I'd recommend a Windows 8 tablet to anyone in college (I have an asus vivotab smart), but an iPad is much easier to use and play games on comparatively and by the time he'll really need it for other things there will probably be better options available.
As a student, I can safely say nobody I know uses that shit. Denard still should have been able to remember said date, but that's not one of the reasons.

I would love

I would love to see the 4th and 15 replace the onside kick, but only as an option. You could also do a normal kick off, because those are part of the excitement too (obviously, the opposing coach would be given knowledge as to the decision made).

Well

That basically just happened.

Email the Alumni Association

Although just being a freshman, I just emailed the alumni association regarding this. I feel like if we can get the thousands upon thousands of alumni that don't read this blog to learn about this, the number of backers and amount of money given will skyrocket. Because let's be honest, $16,000 is a lot of money, but 400 backers isn't nearly that many considering what could and should be happening with this charity right now.

An interesting way to look at the whole random thing...

Go back thorough Greg Mattison's coaching career and look at the turnover margin of every  single team he has coached. You'll see a lot of plusses, and no minuses (at least none as far back as I looked). There's not even many small plusses (plus two or something).

I for one believe that turnovers are not random, but are in fact mainly a result of coaching style. Take Mattison's: Very aggressive, very blitzy.

How does this result in his positive turnover margin? Well if you're sending more people on the blitz you're probably putting more pressure on the quarterback and forcing him to make reads faster and under more strain. Thus, a higher possibility of a duck that results in an interception.

Heck, I'd even suggest that an aggressive style can result in more fumble recoveries. If you have a blitz on, you probably have more players in the box than normal (or at least, more players close to the LOS). This can give you a numbers advantage in covering the ball. Sure, the football may bounce random, but if you have 6 players near the ball when it comes loose and the other team has 5, you have a higher chance of getting it.

That's not even to mention how I'd postulate that better defenses in general, regardless of playing style, are more likely to have a + turnover margin (just like better offenses are more likely to not turn it over). If you have cornerbacks that can blanket a reciever, you're more likely to get interceptions. Better defensive line? Hitting the running back in the backfield forces more passing downs, and is also probably more of a surprising hit for the back resulting in a higher chance of fumble. Then, of course, sacks can cause fumbles a lot of the time and a better line will probably get you more sacks. And so forth.

Looking at the FBS as a whole might be random, but that's akin to saying yards per game are random because they all average out to be around 250 yards per game and anything over or under that is just dumb (un)luck.

It's not like It's not like what we usually describe as a dong forest is made of wood and leaves and other tree-ey stuff, so yeah I think so.
I read the title and burst out laughing.

Still laughing.

(Edit: Okay, not laughing any more. And now I feel bad because no matter the odds of it happening at the same position, it seriously sucks for the player and I wish him a full and speedy recovery)

Actually

Fred just said that he's preparing Fitz as if he was going to; he doesn't know what Hoke plans to do and actually has no clue (or at least no clue he'll give us) as to who will start/play vs. 'bama.

This is exhibit A of how rumors get started.

But

But does he have wolves for pets?

It'd be interesting

It'd be interesting if someone could do something like this for every BCS team (average every conference) to see how the conferences stack up against one another in terms of height and weight at different positions. Probably very time consuming though.

Pretty sure...

We're sitting on the field, not in the stand, at least that's what I was told at orientation. So there might not be enough space for others on the field, though I don't know why they won't let non students go in the actual stands.

They told us about this at orientation

as far back as early June. I'm really excited for it since it'll basically be my first weekend on campus. It's a great idea for the students to have a awesome place to go to watch the game and we apparently get to sit right on the field for it.

As others have said, apply early

I'm an incoming out of state freshman, and applied early action. I got in, but then my friend who applied January (Michigan wasn't his first choice) got waitlisted. I was top 10 in my class and he was like 14th or so. So it's not like there was a large difference in how smart we are. Applying early definitely helps.

Agreed And that fits nicely with your avatar.
YES!!!!t It's been awhile... Love how all three topics used different sources.
Am I the only one

that kind of likes the extra spacing? I like being able to devote my full attention to each of the big bowl games, and knowing that it's what everybody else is watching too.

Plus, for me, a game on a weekday night > a game on a friday or saturday night, I guess mostly because I'm a high schooler that likes going out and has never had to consider getting off work to actually go to a game (and completely off topic, but just got my acceptance to Michigan!).

If Georgia wins

And Iowa State upsets Kansas State (a fairly possible upset, at least), then the predictor thing has us against the winner of Okalahoma/Okalahoma State, assuming all the rest of the matches proceed as expected. I wouldn't mind that.

It's sarcasm

The entire joke is that he spends the entire time talking about how disrespectful it is to shorten the institutions name from "The Ohio State University" to "Ohio." Then he shortens it to "O."

It's a joke, and a pretty dang funny one imo.

About counting down the playclock...

It wasn't the students who started it, as far as I know. I was in section 20, the opposite end from the students, and the offense was at our end when the delay of game was called. The next play it was our section (or the sections around us) that started it immediately. I'm not claiming to have started it, but my dad and I were definitely some of the first to join in and it didn't start in the student section.

So I just applied to Michigan

So I just applied to Michigan (sent my Common App in for Early Admission). 33 on the ACT w/ Writing, 35 on the ACT w/o writing (I took it for free at my school without writing and then had to take it with writing). I sent in both scores; I hope that's not bad. Also National Merit Semi-Finalist and 2100 on the SAT.

And my essay to the 500 word prompt (one about what qualities the engineering college has that makes it appealing to me) was, I must say, a very hard essay to write. I'm very happy with my common app one and the other Michigan essay, but that one... wasn't too sure about. I also had no idea how to make it better though so whatever.

Questions: Likelihood of getting in (based on the small amount of information I told you)? (Sorry, I like reassurence). Was sending both the ACT no Writing and ACT with Writing a bad move?

I like this

I really enjoy these diaries; they explain a lot.

What I really wanted to ask, is how did you come across that song? Or group? The video has only 180 views on youtube... and I feel like a lot of those views are from mgoblog.

Already have

In fact, programming in java is a hobby of mine. Mostly little mini games. So I'm pretty certain I have it.

Don't see it

This could potentially be awesome, but I'm failing to see the buttons or options when I click on a ufr. I only see the video.

(Correction: WILL be awesome, when it gets working. Using firefox on a mac, by the way.)

As a STL resident

This is the first time I've ever said this but...

GO PHILLIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Best last day of baseball ever.

Is that..

Face palm guy on the left? I don't think so, but if it is, this picture is now gold.

I'm guessing

Somebody doesn't get it.

Really?

Did that just happen? YES THAT JUST HAPPENED!!!! WHOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

I wish

I wish he was a wide reciever.

He didn't play.

Was declared hurt before the game.

Edit: Supposed to be in reply to the guy above who asked when he went down

Just showed this to my dad...

His response?

"It's kinda sad that the highlight of Thursday is Bowling Green versus Idaho."

I don't think he quite understands the point of this.

...What

My actions upon clicking:

*Reads first paragraph*

"What da hell does this have to do with twitter?????"

*Reads second paragraph*

"Still... what?"

*Consider posting about how stupid this is...*

*Re-read second paragraph*

*Read link*

NOW I GET IT!!!

...But I'll comment on how confusing this topic is anyway. I mean, really? Was that first paragraph (still have no clue what that's about) necessary?

Kinda OT

But why does everyone apparently hate Rockford? I'm not from Michigan so don't know much about Michigan high schools but played in a water polo tournament there this summer and the school looked REALLY nice (especially the pool/other athletic facilities).

Are all the students stuck up jerks or something?

Only football program

Kentucky's basketball program got hit with it in the 1950s, Southern Louisianna basketball got hit in the 1970s, and a few division two/three schools have gotten it for other sports as well.

Also, SMU got much more than just a ban from competing. They got a 55 scholarship reduction, an assistant coach reduction, a ban on recruiting for a season (this may be included in the actual death penalty law; I'll admit I haven't read it), probation, and a bowl/TV ban past the season bans. Plus they were banned for two seasons (although the second was only banned from home games), not just one.

I just want to make sure that when people are considering whether or not the NCAA wll issue the death penalty, they know it's only the ban on playing a season; we aren't necessarily talking SMU like sanctions yet. Close, obviously, but not quite.

Death penalty can mean different things

SMU got it particularly bad. I could see Miami getting the death penalty, just not to the extent SMU did. For instance, banned from playing games for a season, some scholarship losses (not 55 like SMU's ban, though), and a 3+ year bowl ban with 5 years probation. However, allow the team to practice in pads during season (if the NCAA *can* allow that).

That's just an example, but basically something like that.

Pro tip Pro tip: don't post a new topic about something remotely news worthy from a foreign country, especially overseas. By the time you wake up, I guarantee it's already been posted. That's a nice way of saying you fail for reposting the major news of the day (it spawned 3 or so topics discussing developments).
Rittenberg on Stonum

Kinda OT but I don't think this deserves it's own thread, and I couldn't make one anyway. On CFL they have Rittenberg on the phone about Stonum... he basically says we have pretty good depth but losing your number two reciever is going to hurt no matter what. Wow, that's insightful.

Then says that while some may be thinking that Hoke is coming down harder on players than Rich, it's not entirely true and things should be taken on a case-by-case basis. He mentioned Feagin as an example of Rich Rod disiplining.

At the end he said it was a good response by Hoke to show he isn't afraid of penalizing his players and that it in addition establishs a basis for disiplinary action early in his tenure.

AKA, nothing that big, but it's always fun to see them talking about Michigan on CFL.

How are his legs?

All we've heard about Shane is great and I'm seriously stoked for him to play for us, but does anybody have any information as to his running ability? I'm just curious as to whether or not we're going back to 6'6'' statues with bricks for feet or not.

I'm not even talking about Tate like ability, but it'd be seriously awesome if he could scramble for 10 yards or throw on the run when necessary. A good comparison would be Andrew Luck (didn't he have that 50 yard run in some game, even though he's not known as a runner?).

You can't really blame RR

I don't want to turn this into a big deal, but you can't really blame Rich Rod for immediately going spread. For one, without Mallet, why not? Our offense wouldn't have been very good no matter what, so might as well get a jump start on the transition. Secondly, Rich Rod had never ran a pro style offense as far as I know. Sure, he knew the basics, and could pull it out as a rare change up, but it would have been like asking a black smith to suddenly become cook since all the stuff available was foodstuffs. He could probably whip up a sandwich or something, but there's no way it would have been good enough to serve at a banquet. In contrast, it looks like Borges has had a much better variety of experiences; as he said, San Diego State actually ran a fair amount of shotgun. That's just my take on it.

So while I really like the transition Hoke and Co are employing, and it's definitely better than going full on pro the first year for them (though I'm really not sure they'll ever be fully pro anyway), let's not knock on Rich Rod for what he did. Different situation.

You've convinced me.

I, for one, think that obrien , godin and pipkins looked like the best three there. I hope we get the other two.
