IDK why Gadowski is brought up. why would he leave penn st?
I wish Red retired 8-10 years ago so a run with Mel would be 12-15 years before retirement. he's almost 60 I think?

|2 weeks 2 days ago||Well, I have a degree in||
Well, I have a degree in Astronomy from UM. MS in Physics from EMU, and ABD where I subsequently transferred to MA in Sec Ed at UM after my daughter was born. I teach Calc, Physics, engineering for HS SRs now. /qualifications
How did you know it was the right major for you?
fascinated about the biggest of the big - stars, galaxies, cosmology, dark matter, BHs, relativity, spacetime, all of it. The more physics I took, the more I liked it (unlike Chem, which I liked in MS/HS, was OK in AP and eventually hated Orgo at UM; bio was never my thing - too much memorization). Have him look at the course offerings in asto at UM or where ever - if it sounds like the greatest thing ever to take a class about star types, BHs, DM, galactic structure, then that's a good sign. Like, genuinely excited to take the class.
What does the job situation after college (he's assuming he'll have to go to grad school) look like?
I know people who finished with a BS and went to work at Havard Ctr for Astrophysics, at a planetarium, and even the FBI (they just want smart, technically oriented problem solvers with computer experience, I assume). Kind of limited, but it's possible.
MS: you can teach at the instructor level, probably at a Comm Coll. Better chance to work at a research institution. can find a place where you are doing kind of tedious grunt work, but with a high level of tech skills in analyzing data. Will get published as like the 5th-10th name on the paper.
PhD opens all the doors, but it's publish or perish as they say.
Other than Michigan, what are some schools with good astonomy departments?
Lots of smaller schools have decent -good Astro depts: Smith College in Mass, Union Coll in NY. Too many obscure places to name, really. Maybe Google on campus observatories - that's probably a good correlation to good Ugrad astro depts (not always tho). Of course, the usual Ivies, Cal, Stanford, UM, Wisc as you'd expect. ASU and UAriz as well as UHawaii. PSU and MSU are quite good. UWindsor is good as well. I think USNews publishes rankings for tons of concentrations, FWIW.
Is it feasible to get a strong liberal arts undergrad degree and then go on the astonomy/astrophysics in grad school?
Yes, but major in Astro or applied physics or physics
Do you have to be a super math whiz to even consider this as a major?
OK, so here's the thing that confuses people. The word "Astronomy" has a connotation of purely qualitative observation. For example: phases of the moon, asteroids/meteors/meteorites. Eclipses, planetary orbits (how they lead to the seasons) and basic HS science/math concepts applied to space: Doppler effect, geometry and trig for parallax angles, etc. So it kind of fools people into thinking Astro isn't all that math heavy (kind of like how some tech or engin programs in HS make kids think they want engineering). It sounds to me like he wants "Astrophysics" which is exactly what it sounds like and is the same as "astronomy" at the college level and in the field. You'd take almost all the physics and math there is at the Ugrad level. So, yes.
Anyway, if you want to know more feel free to reply here or is you want we can correspond over email, let me know.

|2 weeks 4 days ago||the OL is clearly the big||
the OL is clearly the big stone tied to the team trying to float to the top of the football landscape. They haven't been good in almost any games against decent to good front 7s. Every M OL in the last 1o years has had at least 2 big ?s and maybe other complete "meh" players in addition. The future 1-2 years looks to be the same. The hope is Harbaugh let QB development and an influx of top level talent at the skill positions, in addition to absolutely suffocating D, will mitigate the OL issues. I have my doubts. we will likely have 2-3 losses each of the next 2 years.
I'm also not expecting Najee Harris to commit to a team with this OL. Why would he?
