Although I am truly in favor of Harbaugh being "innovator of everything", the dead snap has been in use for over ten years.  Saw it for the first time at a clinic in 2005 and have seen high school teams using this ever since.  Every center I have coached has preferred the dead snap over the spiral snap.

He did this at West Virginia too.

With Belichick

What people haven't talked about is the personnel situation.  I really believe if the Patriots didn't like the personnel matchup they had, a time out would have been called.  In a similar situation earlier in the game the Patriots stuffed a 3rd and 1.  The Seahawks were in a spread gun package and couldn't get the first down.  I just believe the Patriots liked their odds if the Seahawks decided to run the ball.  A stop for a loss puts the Seahawks in a situation without a great passer, on a shortened field, without a timeout...WIN again for the Pats.

The first step to fixing a problem is admitting you have one.  Our spring game is a joke compared to many on TV, including Ohio State.  We should have a full stadium...it should be electric.  We need to make the necessary changes to make our spring game the best.  I don't want to hear all the crap excuses like weather, depth, injuries etc...If you want to do it the best, get it done.

Wow...is this mlive???

Everyone so excited 30 minutes and now we won't even finish 3rd in the big ten. Give me a break. Let's see how we finish. 1 of 35 games this year.

My List

1: Alexander
2: Woodson
3: Peoples
4: walker
5: Wangler
6: Wheatley
7: Floyd
8: avant
9: obviously Hayes
10: Brady

Coverage and Corner Clarity

Hopefully this helps on the field/boundary corner debate.

The boundary is more often than not your best 1 - on - 1 defender against the pass.  This also depends on what kind of personnel packages you are seeing.

10 = 1 back - 0 TE / 11 = 1 back - 1 TE  /  21 = 2 Back - 1 TE and so on.

vs. 21 personnel (I formation type packages), teams will formation the field more often than not, leaving their best WR(the SE) to the short side.  You want your best DB to be locked on him.  If he is really good, it lets you play different games with your boundary safety, getting him the run game or doubling that kid on passing downs.

vs. 10 and 11 personnel, Michigan will usually get into what they call their "sub" package.  This is where the nickel comes in for the SAM.  In our case, our SAM will become a rush end and our 3 tech or 1 tech will come off the field.  We usually play 3 techs on both guards in the sub package.  Again, more often then not, teams do not put trips to the boundary.  You have more help to the field for the field corner if they are running any 3 x 1 or 2 x 2 sets.  The boundary is put more on an island in either set.  You want your better pass defenders to the boundary to erase that side of the field and make them throw to the wide side where there is more help.

You can say the field corner has more space to cover, but usually has more help.  In my experience, it is much easier to play the field side and the boundary side.  As a coach, our boundary is by far our best DB and our field corner can be the superintendant's kid.

Does this help?

ESPN NBA Coverage

I actually agree with some of this post.  I am a very casual NBA fan.  I was playing some backgammon and decided to turn on ESPN for some background, early finals background noise.  After 5 minutes, Stephen and Skip came on and the TV went off.  Turned on the game right before it started.

It is a matter of right and wrong.

When you are one of the most recognized sport teams in the world, on a national stage, in the biggest game of the early season, you NEED to make sure your "brand" is represented in the best way possible. This is huge for recruiting, growing the fan base, and the perception of the conference in which we play compared to the SEC. All of these things are impacted, even if slighty, positively with the band being there. Our program is much to important to say we can't afford 400,000 to send our band. Ridiculous.

Favorite play

Is when he says there is a heavy blitz on the Williams interception. They brought a whopping three man pressure on the play. Only the best and brightest at Notre Dame.

Corrections to look for

1. Bolden at linebacker is right with the ones. He is most certainly an every down 2. He has practiced with the ones in their heavy/short yardage/goalline pkg.

2. Talbott has been with the 1's most of the time with Floyd backing him up.

3. Avery is the nickel which is just as important as the Sam because of all the spread stuff we see now. In my opinion, the nickel should be listed as the 12th starter.

I believe

They think he has added the weight a little too fast. I like Demens, but I wouldn't be surprised to see either Morgan move to the mike and have Bolden take the will or keep Morgan at will and have Bolden get mike reps, which is what happened today. Bolden is undoubtedly going to be a stud. Ross and Jenkins-Stone haven't hit campus yet. Ryan was a great surprise last ear and he already looks much better physically. If you can't tell, I am completely jacked up about the improvements Wellman and the S & C staff have made.

Bellomy

Not practicing right now...for what reason is a bit of a mystery, but he was not in pads.

Agree completely...

I was surprised to see how much ass Morgan has added. This should probably be talked about in a new thread, but the difference in the physicality is huge from last spring to this spring. They will be smaller up front, but much more physical at the linebacker position. I also liked the combo of Beyer/Clark at the rush and Ryan/Gordon at the Sam.

I know

I meant Hawthorne

From practice

I would not be surprised, with 5 months to go, if he takes 1st team reps from demens or Morgan. He is most certainly big enough to play at big ten level right now, but probably not every down yet.

Yes

Demens hurt his thumb or something on his hand. It was in a wrapped soft cast. Demens and bolden took first team reps with Morgan. Bolden is also part of a jumbo package.

Joe Bolden

Joe Bolden is the real deal. Looked awesome for an early enrollee this weekend. Watched all three practices and he was very good - way ahead of ringer, Poole, fitzgerald, and jones. Demens looked decent, Morgan looked a little too heavy, but also good.

Confusing??

Knowing how Hoke recruits, I would say he guaranteed Reeves the opportunity to play early, which he gives everyone he recruits. I would make the guess Reeves has this one wrong. Just my thoughts.

Stunner

This is really surprising he is staying. Interesting development...no way Big Phil would let Chip get away i guess.

In means...

Sorry for any confusion. In means a part of this years recruiting class. Sounds line someone new may be signing. We will see as this is going to be an exciting week.

Thank you

Thanks for the update aquaman. Hopefully you are right about your feelings on this one as I like Garnett a lot. I believe Michigan will pull one surprise on signing day as well. Coming from a good source, someone off the radar may be in.

Just out of Oregon...

Sounds like he simply wants to go to the NFL. He had an interview with the dolphins before they made their hire. Players found out about the buccaneers deal today around three. Consesus among duck players is that it will be done soon. Hold on to those hats in Eugene...they could have quite a few players decommitt or leave.

Reeves yes, Diamond...???

I am glued in on Reeves. Having Mattison be the last visit is big, but Urban is a good salesman of things "Bucky". I do not have great feelings about Diamond. I don't understand his recruitment. We all know he does have a favorite, but he can't say which ones are ahead of others. He also is waiting until after signing day?? The last recruit we went after who did this was Pryor I believe. His was much longer, but I don't have a good vibe from him.

Get through urb's visit

We need him to get through Meyer's visit. Mattison can work magic, but he has to have the chance. It sounds as though Reeves will not make a decision until after all visits, but I am still nervous about it.

Williams without question

TE had a chance to win on a nice throw from Flacco earlier. He may even be a bigger goat than cundiff. The second fumble helped lose the game in overtime...the first fumble put the game in overtime.

Ohio recruiting

It is easy to say Ohio's recruiting class would not be nearly what it is without the PSU situation. Ohio is flourishing from that just like we flourished from Ohio's "tatgate"

Oh man,

This is wrong on so many levels.  This kid is only 18 and he is being wronged by a lot of people around him.  None of us know what his support system is like in terms of siblings, parents, coaches, etc..., but where are the people around him saying something about this stinks.  How does Saban sleep at night.  Someone should follow this story and see what happens next year.

For Saban, he may not want the kid, but he doesn't want someone else to have him even more.  What a dissapointment Saban is in the coaching profession in terms of character.

Great Class

It will interesting how this class ends up.  I am really excited about having true blue chip prospects coming in, but I am more excited to see some of the three star guys develop.  I think the coaching staff has done a fantastic job finding kids of the three star variety who have big time "potential."

No Question

There is no question about DT's off the field issues.  It is a pretty well known rumor his off the field issues have not stopped, having a negative effect on the team the last two years.  For Oregon, it is probably a good thing they lose Thomas and James.

This reminds me a little of losing Manny Harris early.  A lot of people thought he should stay, but it was most certainly better for the team when he left.

Confidence picks

They scare the hell out of me when I am picking against Iowa. It is amazing, but I am still nervous about this game costing me 30 points.

Dan Gilbert

Okay...

I have to get this off my chest responding to someone actually saying they like how Dan Gilbert trashed Lebron. When the owner, after "the decision", comes out and talks about trying harder to win a championship because Lebron leaves means one thing to me. He obviously didn't try as hard as he could when Lebron was there. I didn't like how things went down, but when Gilbert admitted he didn't try as hard as he possibly could when Lebron was on the team, Lebron was completely off the hook. Gilbert is an idiot. How did the same team minus one player do last year?

Truth is

There were less than 10 guys that could bench 225 20 or more times when Hoke took over. I don't care who the person was before, that is unacceptable. Regardless of philosophy, that is unacceptable.

Same here

I was looking forward to seeing him. I just didn't notice. A kid from heritage and west were by far the fastest. Rawls may have been there, but I didn't notice anything spectacular.

Thomas Rawls

I am not sure if Thomas Rawls made the semis even in the regional.

TC regionals...

Not sure why you would use traverse city. They have had 1 of the last 3 regionals in div 1. That one was done with automatic timing, not hand time.

C'mon

What you saw today is not what is installed.  Why on earth would they show what they have installed for Denard.  They ran one zone scheme for Denard today.  They have more, but why show it...it doesn't matter.  This was a more Lloyd like spring game where you don't show anything.  A day to enjoy watching Michigan players.

Past Inflations

Spring games for the past few years have been 1's v. 2's.  I have seen four different practices and the spring scrimmage last weekend.  The offense showed much more a week ago then they did today.  The number of plays was also way down today as compared with last week.  The #1 defense has looked much better two straight weekends.  I am generally excited about their improvement, especially since VB, Demens, Woolfolk, and Floyd aren't playing.  I said last week Carvin Johnson has looked better in every practice and he had another good day.  Relax on the offense and understand THIS staff is getting it done in practice.  They will be better!

No way

From the clinic, it was easy to see Robinsin is the absolute leader of the offense.  It was also easy to see the 2nd Defense is absolutely horrible.  They were abused over and over again during the three day period.

Defense better

Clinic was awesome.  There is a big difference between this defensive staff and last year's defensive staff.  Spent some time with coaches on both sides of the ball.  Through the first two days of practice, thursday and friday, the D looked overmatched and undertalented, but on saturday they showed up big time.  At the clinic last year I don't believe the 1st D ever stopped the 1st O.  During saturday's scrimmage, the 1st D started with two big interceptions(great plays by Cam Gordon and Carvin Johnson).  They also stopped the offense on the next two possessions.  I was really impressed.

Players who were standouts during practice and scrimmage:

Defense:  Gordon, Johnson, Martin, Roh

Offense:  Roundtree and the rest of the WR group, no one back was great over the others, and the OLine had a lot of trouble protecting the QB

1st Team Defense

The 1st team defense looked impressive yesterday during the scrimmage.  The 2nd team needs a lot of work.  Over the course of the coaches clinic the last three days, I thought the defense was in a little trouble, but they did not let the 1st offense score.  Martin looked great and Carvin Johnson was extremely impressive.

I punched a teammate in the

I punched a teammate in the face during a rebounding drill when I was a senior.  I was kicked out of practice and everything was cool the next day.  I have been successful without something like that coming up again.

Come to Michigan!
