Wait a minute. So now you're saying that killing random hobos for no good reason is NOT the reason we got Harbaugh?

I'm telling you we need a warning system In place urging posters to check the date of their "news" before creating a thread. This article was written yesterday-there is a 0.0% chance a story involving a possible Michigan grad transfer would get missed by all 100,000 or so visitors to the site.

"It's hard to not see it as a ringing condemnation of the team's prospects next year."
I disagree. I think it's impossible to not see it a ringing condemnation of the team's prospects next year. Sadly, the person who needs to see that way probably won't. He's not alone in missing what seems obvious to others though:
“He died right after he retired, and seeing that made me feel more conscious of a man needing a motive to live. If I ever got out of coaching, I would have to get a job somewhere, or I'm afraid I'd wilt on the vine, too.”
"If I've got to have a contract to keep my job here, I'm in the wrong place."
Reacting to media speculation about his coaching future, after Penn State President Graham Spanier said the 81-year-old Paterno would not be given a new contract prior to the 2008 season.

Outstanding work as always Space. FWIW Brian showed a clip when he was here of Standford literally changing their formation 5 times pre-snap to screw with the safety reads. By the time they ran the play the Virginia Tech safety was literally running back and forth between the hash marks and looking to the sidelines for help. It was hilarious.

|6 days 13 hours ago||Yes and Yes||
I am not claiming that every person paid X amount generates X amount of value. I am also not claiming that the business world is not riddled with people hopelessly misplaced and unable to do the job they were hired for (Lord knows I've worked with a few). But everyone of those idiots were "worth" what the company was willing to pay them right up to when they were fired and then they were "worth" zero.
If the question had been asked "Did U of M get 5MM of VALUE from hiring Jim Harbaugh?" the answer, to me at least, would be a hell yes. But the question is "was he worth it" and that's a whole different issue altogether.
|6 days 14 hours ago||I disagree||
If you are in the working world right now you went to a job this morning where you and your employer decided what your "worth" was. Nobody forced you to accept it and nobody forced your employer to offer it. If you're really good at it (like Harbaugh) chances are others will want you to work for them and your "worth" will go up. If you really suck at it (like Hoke) your employer will prolly not want you around long and they'll let you go and your "worth" will probably go down.
But at the end of the day whether you like it or not - your worth is defined by what you and a third party agree it to be. Just like when you sell a house, a baseball card or a used blender. The state does not determine this value. YOU determine this value. And it doesnt matter if your friends, family or anyone else (like a random internet poster) doesnt think you're "worth" it - the fact that your employer and you do agree is all that matters.
So is Hargaugh worth 5MM? Absofuckinglutely. Not a dollar more or a dolllar less. That's a free market at work boys and girls.

Hell then people gave even less of a shit about that back in the day. I dont think they had even invented "MIP" back then. It simply didnt exist or if it did nobody i knew ever got tagged with it. I'm sorry but hitting a college kid with a MIP unless he's beligerent, starting a fight or flame-thrower drunk is just stupid IMO.
I'm kinda glad I'm old. Ann Arbor from 78-81 featured:
1. Drinking age of 18 (my senior year they bumped it to 21 but it wasnt really enforced)
2. Possession of less than 2 ounces of pot was a $5.00 fine
3. All football games started at 1:00pm, you could bring ANYTHING you wanted as long as it wasnt glass (pony kegs were just fine), we could pass up coeds, sit wherever the fuck we wanted and Bo was the coach.
Doesn't Ann Arbor's finest have anything better to do than arrest a freaking college kid for underage drinking?
|1 week 3 hours ago||Yes he is worth 5MM - EXACTLY 5MM||
The whole concept of is somebody "worth" their salary to me is ridiculous. Of course he is because somebody (in this case us) was willing to pay him 5MM and he was willing to take it. Therefore he's "worth" exactly 5MM per year. Just like houses, cars, collectables - you name it - the free market decides what something is "worth" and no matter how much it bothers some people - in a relatively free market your worth is defined by the dollars someone is willing to pay and you're willing to accept.
It drives me nuts to hear people bitch about celebrity income or sports salaries. Because unless they're going into the negotiations with a gun they are "worth" exactly what someone is willing to pay them and they are willing to work for. Not a dollar more or a dollar less.
|1 week 3 hours ago||Not saying it was better but||
Not saying it was better but back when I was a lad the drinking age was 18, I had a fake at 15 (what a joke that was - I looked all of 12) and nobody and I mean NOBODY gave two shits if you drank and even drove as long as you didnt hurt anybody. Cops basically either called your parents (if you were ultra-drunk) or got somebody else to drive the car and told you to be careful and sent you on your way. Nobody got arrested unless they were a world class asshole to the cops or so wasted they couldnt stand up.
Man has the pendulum swung hard the other way. Now - having a couple of drinks and driving is considered a crime against humanity and punished accordingly.

If the question was "Who is the most oblivious college basketball coach of all time" then yes, put Steve at or near the top. But dirty - no, he wasnt directly involved in the Ed Martin shenanagins although we was conveniently "blind" to what would seem obvious to the rest of us.

To be fair Hoke didnt have any problem getting top recruits to visit. Shit, he didnt really have any problem getting top recruits to commit. There was a time, not to long ago, when we were #1 in the country star-ranking wise for current class of recruits before everything fell apart.
What he trouble doing was keeping them in the fold post committment once they saw the overall quality of coaching on the field.

Just checked out the site and you're right - there are some very cool items in there (autographed Denard jersey if you're so inclined) for people outside of the DC area that's for sure.
Good luck with the auction. I think I'll be making a bid or two on some of the football tickets they have available.

Random, nameless internet poster who says good things = honest, factual reporter of truth who clearly has keen insight and inside information
Random, nameless internet poster who says bad things = lying, deceitful scumbag who just wants to troll fans and is making shit up as he goes along as he clearly never saw a thing in person.

FWIW way back in the day I took a poli-sci class at Michigan and the prof insisted that nuclear war would be launched against the US or the USSR the day before something like this went on the grid. Because once a force field (or a comprehensive and functional anti-missle missle system) was in place that country wouldn't be under the threat of mutually assured destruction any longer.

|1 week 1 day ago||That's interestiing. So||
That's interestiing. So unlike football & basketball where the NCAA makes the eligibility rules in hockey it's the professional league and in some cases even the team themselves that decides who can stay and who needs to go? That's quite different from what I see in other sports and not at all what I thought.
Thanks for explaining that to me.

Can one of you puckheads give a brief explanation of how the NHL and other league's draft impact both our current and incoming players? This is something I've never understood (unlike football or basketball where once you declare you're gone) so I'm hoping one of you can help an old dog learn a new trick.

A fraternity brother of mine was the team manager for the 80 & 81 seasons. Those were VERY fun to watch (Mike McGee, the Bodner twins, Paul Heurman and Thad Garner) and he insisted that Frieder did ALL the coaching and Johnny Orr was just a figurehead and the HC in name only.
I really liked Frieder and LOVED his 85-89 teams even though they underachieved in the tourny for the most part. What a lot of people forget is that the 89 National Champs were ALL his recruits and while Fisher took them to the title, Frieder was resonsible for putting the team together.
