The catch he made on the…

The catch he made on the drive that turned into the FG that put UM up 30-24 against OSU. When JJ threw back across his body and CJ made a great play to turn it into a six-yard gain. It could have easily been a disasterous turnover.

I don't know if the the…

I don't know if the the extra round to accommodate best of three series (which is how it should be, curse you random number generator single elimination playoff hockey, but I fail to see why the top seed in each region shouldn't host. It works for all of the other sports (even women's basketball for the first two rounds), why shouldn't it work for hockey?

My understanding is that the…

My understanding is that the players get a cut of jersey sales with their names on them. No idea how much, but a portion is intended to go to the players.

One of the things about…

One of the things about Brown though, is that 247 named him the recruiter of the year, which I think is why Syracuse took a shot on him. No idea if it will work out, as I'm guessing it is a touch harder to recruit to Syracuse than it is Georgia, but I think he's almost an exception when it comes to a position coach getting the head gig because of how he was thought of as a recruiter.

I've seen this theorized in…

I've seen this theorized in a few places, and Sam Webb was the first one to put it out there: The WaPo reporter (Will Hobson) said somewhere that the story basically dropped into his lap. He studied at Boston College (where he worked for the student newspaper) from 2002-06. Guess which current Big Ten coach just happened to be a graduate assistant at BC from 2003-04. Either it is an amazing coincidence or something smells rotten in Denmark.

Here's what I don't…

Here's what I don't understand (and it's probably just a money thing): why can baseball, softball, volleyball, field hockey, lacrosse, women's basketball and women's ice hockey can all do the early rounds on campus sites, but ice hockey insists on following the men's basketball model with neutral sites?

Michigan 23, Georgia 17

A win will cause me to spend entirely too much time looking at ticket websites and convincing myself I could make Indy work.

A loss will cause me to look back on the season and remember all the fond memories and probably watch the OSU and Iowa games 100 more times to get ready for spring ball.

This is by far my most…

This is by far my most anticipated episode of this podcast. Can't wait to listen.

One question: at some point soon, can we have a discussion about retiring the phrase BPONE? I would very much love to never see those five letters in that exact order again.

Our anniversary is the 24th,…

Our anniversary is the 24th, but my wife has to go out of town for work then, so we'll celebrate. Probably end up getting donuts and apple cider at an orchard, getting a nice dinner and then wrapping it up with a viewing of "No Time to Die."

Depends on which network has…

Depends on which network has the first selection for games that weekend. If it is ESPN/ABC, I would guess that PSU-OSU would be the night game, which would probably make UM-MSU the Big Noon Saturday on Fox, with Fox also maybe having Iowa-UW and putting that on at 4.

I remarked to my friend as we were watching the game that he looks like he’s having fun on the sidelines.

I don’t know if the younger staff has reenergized him or what it is, but he just seems to be having fun coaching this team. And it is quite clear, shown at least in how the team took to jumping around, that the team is feeding off of that. I know you always have fun when you’re winning, but I can’t think of another JH team here that seems to be enjoying it as much as this team.

I live in Omaha and am…

I live in Omaha and am playing the waiting game. First, I want to see when the game is to make sure it doesn't conflict with work (I have to go in at 5), but also to wait out the results of NU-MSU an maybe Northwestern as well. If they lose at least one of those (assuming an Oklahoma loss tomorrow), my guess is that the price will go down. If they win both, then they will probably stay where they are now (unless the UM game ends up being a night game, that might drive the price up).

The last time Michigan won…

The last time Michigan won the national title, it was in Boston. Next year's Frozen Four just happens to be in Boston.

My understanding of it (now…

My understanding of it (now it could be wrong, but this is how I believe it is going) is that everyone who chooses to come back for that additional year can do so if the school wants to pay for the scholarship for that additional year. Schools will still only be allowed to have 13 players on scholarship, with the university picking up the added cost of the ones who choose to continue to stay.

If someone else has a better understanding and needs to correct this, please do so. But given everything I have read, I believe the limit stays at 13 and it is on the schools to cover the cost for the ones who choose to play with that additional year.

I was in the newsroom of the…

I was in the newsroom of the Omaha World-Herald. We were in process of moving the sports area from one side of the newsroom to the other. I was working in the old side and all the TVs had been taken down. I was following on Twitter and as soon as I saw the tweets about it going in (reporters really need to better than just tweeting, “Wow.” Tell me what the heck happened), I ran across the newsroom to the televisions to watch the replay. It’s the least professional I have been in my time there, and I’m not the least bit sorry about it.

Not that is of great…

Not that it is of great importance, but of those wins you listed, only BYU came at home for Gonzaga. The rest were neutral. Kansas and Auburn were in Florida, West Virginia was in Indy, Iowa was at the Corn Palace in South Dakota, and Virginia was outside of Dallas.

So the Zags racked up the neutral court wins.

My wife’s job is to recruit…

My wife’s job is to recruit international students to come study at her university, so she does a ton of traveling (in a “normal” year, added up, she’s probably gone five months out of the year. And I do some part time work at the paper in town, which involves a lot of night work (6 p.m. to midnight).

She wasn’t traveling and sports weren’t happening, so the paper didn’t need me again until late August, so we spent more time together than we had since we first met.

We did a ton of projects around the house (most proud of redoing our master bedroom), and just enjoyed being together.

Also, we adopted a third dog and I was able to get full-time employment at a different university in town teaching Journalism. So we had a bunch of silver linings in 2020.

I believe the team you're…

I believe the team you're thinking of is Monmouth from 2016. They beat UCLA, Notre Dame and USC in the non-conference, and I think they were well known for how the guys on the bench celebrated.

I'm sure there are a few who…

I'm sure there are a few who, when it came down to choosing between two schools, picked Michigan because of JH. So if he isn't going to be here, and you chose based on the coach, I can see why they would leave.

Not saying it will happen,…

Not saying it will happen, but Wisconsin just beat MSU at home without two starters. It becomes less likely if Livers is still out, but beating MSU on Saturday isn't out of the realm of possibilities.

It's Braylonfest for me. I…

It's Braylonfest for me. I had come home to go to that game with my sister (who normally went to the games with my dad while I was an undergrad at Valpo). We drove up as a family and our parents hung out with my aunt and uncle while my sister and I went to the game.

Our cell phones didn't have a texting plan yet (I don't even really remember if texting was much of a thing at that point), but my mom somehow got through and called us in the middle of the fourth quarter as Braylon was in the middle of doing Braylon things. The stadium was so loud I had no idea what she said and hung up.

We stayed until the glorious end and I was hoarse for almost a week after. When we finally got back to the car, I asked my mom what she had said when she called, and she said "I was calling to tell you we were in the pickup spot and you guys could leave the game whenever you wanted."

Needless to say, I was very happy the stadium was loud enough that I couldn't hear what she was saying when she's called. Our family has had season tickets since 1993, and we have been in the stadium for a lot of amazing wins, but that one sticks out in my memory as one of my favorite games ever.

Peters, Bonner and Penix sounds like a helluva law firm.

It helps that all three of those games you mentioned are in Lincoln this year. The toughest road games for Nebraska are at Minnesota and at Purdue.

This. So much this. Team 153 has not done things the easy way all tourney long. But they bounced back against Creighton and against UCLA, and I have every reason to believe they will do so again tomorrow.

In addition to GA, which…

In addition to GA, which should not be an issue getting in for the afternoon game, or Stubhub/scalpers the box office also holds 500-1,000 reserved seats that are available for purchase the day of the game.

In order to discourage people from getting in line at insane hours, everyone in line by, I believe it is 9 a.m. (box office opens at 10) gets a wristband with a number on it. They then randomly draw a number and the person with that wristband becomes the first person in line to the box office. That's another option if you so desire.

Just for clarification,…

Just for clarification, there are no guarantees that the winner of this super would play on Friday. Play for the Friday-Saturday-Sunday supers feature two supers from each side of the bracket. NCAA will announce on Monday which side of the bracket will play Friday and which will play Saturday (after some of the first round CWS pairings are set to decide what is best for attendance and TV).

I hate to rain on your…

I hate to rain on your parade, but it is only a week later because Thanksgiving is so late. The Game is November 30, and Thanksgiving is November 28, so it still can ruin Thanksgiving. Or make it the best one in recent memory depending on the result.

I have wiped out nearly all…

I have wiped out nearly all memories from that game given the ending, but didn’t Hayden Epstein kick a 57-yard FG at MSU in 2001? Is Gillette’s kick the stadium record and Epstein’s the school record? Or am I misremembering that 2001 game?

That SC-WSU game is Friday That SC-WSU game is Friday night. Hopefully Pac 13 After Dark is a Friday thing too.
Army West Point My uncle went to West Point and I have rooted for the Black Knights almost for as long as I have rooted for UM. Beat Navy.
Spread or Straight Up Are these picks against the spread or straight up? I was assuming ATS because they are listed, but I figured I should be absolutely sure.
Warren Nolan Warren Nolan is another good place to check. I know sites like D1baseball.com and baseballamerica.com will frequently cite these numbers when they put together their regional projections.

Well said Very well written, Ace. Glad to see all that time in Angell Hall with Latin/Classics rubbed off a little bit.
I see what you did there. I see what you did there.
ValparaisoI did my undergrad Valparaiso

I did my undergrad there and work there now (with a grad school stop at UM sandwiched in between). I thought they were going to play in 2013 first round of NCAA tournament, which would have been the worst thing for me ever.

West Point

My uncle went there (class of 72). I would love to see a game at Michie Stadium. I've been inside, but not there for a game.
There was nothing wrong with There was nothing wrong with that name, until that no talent ass clown got famous and started winning Grammys.

Getting married on Friday is

Getting married on Friday is an excellent suggestion. My wife and I got married the Friday before the MSU game last year. It's nice to have two full days to recover instead of just one, and as others have mentioned, Fridays are generally less expensive for venues.

Open seating (if you can swing it) is also a great suggestion. It's fun watching people come together and create new friendships, and it also saves you the aggrivation of trying to remember which cousins should not sit near each other under any circumstances.

I found that suits work out better than tuxes. For a little bit more (and Jos. A. Bank will always do the buy 1 get 2 free for weddings, even if the sale isn't currently going on) than the cost of renting a tux, everyone gets to buy a suit. People really appreciated having a suit to take home instead of just renting a tux for the day.

Seconded

I second that. Due to her sheer awesomeness (and Jennie Ritter's on the mound as well) during that NC year, Sam Bam has to top the list.

Ones I have attended:1) 1996 Ones I have attended:
1) 1996 College World Series championship game - LSU's Warren Morris (later a Tiger) hits a walkoff home run to beat Miami.
2) 1996 NCAA Tournament Princeton upsetting defending champion UCLA on a back door play. The RCA Dome chanted "Pete Carrill, Pete Carrill" after the game. It was awesome.
3) Braylon-fest
4) Michigan 4, North Dakota 3 in the 1998 Hockey tournament - The loudest I have ever heard Yost.
5) The Game 1997
1 and 2 get double byes, 3 1 and 2 get double byes, 3 and 4 get one. 5 plays 8 and 6 plays 7 in first round. The winners play 3 and 4 and those winners advance to semis against 1 and 2. This is how the West Coast Conference runs its conference basketball tournament.
First Annual

First annual gets me every time. I would love to explain to everyone who misues it what annual means, but I don't have that kind of time.

It's in the glove box, along It's in the glove box, along with the road maps and ice scraper.
My parents had dropped me and My parents had dropped me and my sister off at the game. My mom called just as Michigan was getting the onside kick to say they were ready for us whenever we wanted leave. I couldn't hear a word she was saying, so we stayed. I will never forget the experience of that 4th quarter and overtime.
Here goes

Best Winning Percentage

In case of ties, the standings list the team with best overall winning percentage first without taking tiebreakers into account. So Michigan's 21-2 (.913) is better than Indiana's 20-3 (.870), which in turn is better than MSU's 19-4 (.826).
