I think that Tony Perkins…

I think that Tony Perkins would be a better pull from the portal.  Veteran PG who averaged

double figures in PPG last season and could mentor the incoming frosh (if they remain committed).

Hard to believe that UDM is…

Hard to believe that UDM is this bad.  Coached by Mike Davis (former head man at Indiana).  Roster includes the sons of Hakeem Olajuwon, Ricky Davis (Iowa standout and had a long NBA career), and Mike Manciel (solid career at CMU and HS teammate of Shane Battier at Country Day).

Davis' son graduated last year.  He averaged over 28 ppg last year and over 25 ppg for his career.

Is "Pump It Up" by Elvis…

Is "Pump It Up" by Elvis Costello an option???:

I've been fortunate enough…

I've been fortunate enough to meet several famous (and not so famous) athletes/celebs.  Here are a few quick (and hopefully amusing) anecdotes:

--I was ten years old in 1969.  While en route to his second consecutive Cy Young Award, Denny McLain made an appearance at the Jacobson's in my home town (my dad's employer).  Dad met him at the local airport (McLain had flown there in his plane) and brought him to our house for lunch.  He autographed our copy of the "Denny McLain at the Organ" album, and we played it on our stereo while he accompanied himself on our piano.  (It was several months before my mom was allowed to wash the keys!)

--In 1982, I cut class for an afternoon of golf.  My twosome was paired up with two other golfers, including a tall, lanky, bespectacled guy wearing red tennis shoes, and lugging a set of old, mismatched clubs.  I was not really paying attention when he introduced himself (it sounded something like "Ron Davison".  On the fifth hole, his playing partner asked him when he was going to Florida?  His response was "Pitchers and catchers have to report in three weeks"!  It turned out that I was golfing with Ron Davis, relief pitcher for the Yankees.  He had just signed a 1-year contract for $300,000 (a $100,000 raise over his previous year's salary); I asked him if he thought he could now afford a new set of clubs and golf shoes.

--A number of years ago, Dave Coulier hosted a celebrity golf outing.  He performed at Mark Ridley's Comedy Castle in Royal Oak on Friday night, with the outing the following day.  There was a great deal of speculation whether any Full House cast members would appear--my wife was especially interested in whether her celebrity crush, John Stamos, would be there.  While we were waiting for Coulier to take the stage, I glanced at the bar, and there was Stamos, talking with Dave Fardig, a former West Quad Chicago House-mate of mine, who I had not seen in years.  I brought my wife over, renewed acquaintances with Dave, and my wife got to shake hands with her Hall Pass.

The celebrity in my group the next day was Gordie Howe---but that's another story.

In January of 1993, my dad and I attended the Detroit Tiger Fantasy Camp in Lakeland.  Jerry was writing an a feature about the camp (it marked the 25-year celebration of the ‘68 world champs) and was assigned to our team.  He refused to use an aluminum bat, insisting on hitting with a wooden bat instead (he brought his own).

Jerry’s reflections on his career (to that point) were almost as fascinating as the stories told by the ‘68 players.

Outstanding job getting us…

Outstanding job getting us recruits to the top of the mountain!

That being said, STAYING on top will be a challenge.  Everyone will be gunning for us next year.

Stewart Copeland also…

Stewart Copeland also composed the theme music for the original TV version of "The Equalizer".

I was at the WCBN studio when they were interviewed prior to their first concert in Ann Arbor.

I lived down the street from him in Jackson.  I never met him, but I went to high school with his kids (IIRC, all were outstanding competitive swimmers).

He lived an incredible life.  RIP.

West Quad, Chicago House,…

West Quad, Chicago House, 4th floor -- 1976-77 and 1977-78.

A number of football players (including TEs Mark Schmerge and Chip Pederson and DBs Mark Braman and Bob Patek) and wrestlers (including future Olympic champ Steve Fraser) also lived in Chicago House my freshman year.  The hockey players arrived sophomore year (Tim Manning, John Olver, Gordie Hampson, Jeff Mars, and Rudy Varvari).

My buddy was dating a co…

My buddy was dating a co-worker of my future wife's.  They set us up.  My wife had just broken an engagement, and reluctantly agreed to go on the first blind date of her life.  She was ready to cancel at the last minute, but her mom talked her into going.

The first date was fun, but not mind-blowing...and my future wife was so far out of my league that I hesitated before asking her out on Date #2.  We had been dating for about 6 weeks when my buddy and her co-worker had a nasty break-up.  (Of course, we ultimately had to invite both to our wedding.  There was considerable angst over the seating chart!)

Married for almost 28 years, with one incredible daughter.

My daughter is 26 and living…

My daughter is 26 and living on the Upper East Side.  Very bright, very pretty, very talented, gainfully employed (while pursuing her acting dream).  Currently dating "Mr. Right This Minute", who is definitely not "Mr. Right".  Needs to be shown that there are far better fish in the sea!

And shame on ME for not even…

And shame on ME for not even mentioning Roman Wilson among the WRs.  How can we NOT throw the ball 35+ times per game???

Can't believe that you didn…

Can't believe that you didn't remember seeing Tommy Doman in the Spring Game.  He was the punter and kicker for the Blue team.  He will clearly be expected to step in if Moody or Robbins gets hurt.  MUCH stronger leg than Anderson - his kickoffs reached the end zone, and his punts were much longer (and higher).

The quality of skill players on this roster is staggering.  I know that there will be a desire for a balanced offense, but Cade/JJ should be lobbying to throw 35+ passes per game.  Very few defenses will be able to blanket Bell, Johnson, Henning, All/Schoonmaker, and Corum/Edwards every play...and that's without mentioning Anthony and Clemons.

I suspect that Edwards will be the short-yardage back, but I think that Dunlap is perfectly capable of filling that role.  [I'm not ready to anoint Mullings as the next Haskins until I see him hurdle a coupld of DBs!]

Alex Bowman slots in at either #3 or #4 QB.  Barring injuries, Denegal and Orji should both be able to redshirt.

He was in Soph Show in the fall of 1976 -- "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying".  I was in the cast as well.  We rehearsed at the Union and the show was performed at Mendelssohn Theater.

This was long before U-M's Theater Department ascended to the reputation that it now holds.  Nevertheless, there were some EXTREMELY talented performers in the cast -- topped off by Dave, his roommate, Reg E. Cathey (RIP), who went on to success on The Wire and Oz, and Beth Feiger, younger sister of Doug Feiger (of The Knack) and Geoffery Feiger (well-known attorney and unsuccessful candidate for Michigan governorship).

[FWIW, i was NOT talented.  Not even close!]

Seth- Since 1984, I've been…

Seth- Since 1984, I've been the official spotter on the M Stat Crew - which makes me the yutz who you're maligning for not giving Hutch a sack.

The ball was snapped from the 25 yard-line.  After Hutch tackled Lombardi at the 24 1/2 yard line, the ball was spotted past the 24 but before the 25.  Had the ball been touching the 24 yard-line, it would have been a one-yard loss and a sack.  However, the NCAA Statisticians' manual unequivocally states that when the ball is spotted beyond a yard line, then the "official" yard line must be rounded up.  Thus for stat purposes, the 24 1/2 yard line is considered to be the 25.  The play started on the 25 and ended on the 25 -- no gain, and no sack.  The "adjustment" was to the correct yard line.

Unwarranted criticism aside, I love your UFRs!

I attended law school at the…

I attended law school at the University of Houston at the very beginning of Akeem Olajuwon's basketball career.  He arrived on campus with minimal knowledge of the game (though he was still a freakish athlete -- IIRC, he had been a fine soccer player).  He learned the basics at the IM building, with the team's student managers providing guidance.  In order to fill out squads for pickup games, the managers would recruit whomever happened to be around at the time....such as law students who were looking for excuses not to study!!

It took some time for Olajuwon to learn the nuances of goaltending.  And so it was that I scored on a future NBA Hall of Famer...more than once....as he gleefully stuck his arms through the basket and swatted away my jump shots, and the student managers frantically tried to explain that it was against the rules for him to do so.  By far, the highlight of my three years at UH (even eclipsing graduation)!

Gott give props to those who mentioned Thano’s and Middle Kingdom!

I’ll put these out for comment:

Jacobson’s (I’m biased; my dad worked for the company for almost 40 years)

Bicycle Jim’s

The original Pretzel Bell

The Cross-Eyed Moose (predecessor to Pinball Pete’s)

Dooley’s (the best cheap beer night!)

and, while technically not a “business”, the bowling alley at the Michigan Union.

Oddly, the reviewer from the Ann Arbor News actually gave me a better review than either Reg or David, even though I had a minor, throwaway role.  He should have been fired on the spot.

Former M student Reg E. Cathey was a cast member on The Wire.  Passed away much too soon, two years ago.

I was in Soph Show with him fall term 1976.  David Alan Grier was also in that show.  I’m still amazed to this day that I (whose acting ability was minimal at best) was cast with people with that kind of talent.

Katelynn Flaherty should be the hands-down favorite in the women's bracket.

Garde Thompson and Louis Bullock won't win the men's bracket, but should be invited to participate.

I probably overestimated my academic prowess -- I applied to Stanford and Michigan.  I didn't get into Stanford, though I suspect that there would not have been enough $$$ to make it happen even if I had been accepted.

It may have been Jon Warden. Southpaw reliever who got a lot of action at the beginning of the season and then hurt his arm.  Still very active with the Tiger Fantasy Camp.

Dobson went onto have a couple of excellent seasons in Baltimore.  He was part of a killer starting rotation with Jim Palmer, Dave McNally, and Mike Cuellar.

Great start, Alex!  As a former WCBN hockey sportscaster (and DJ), I love to see quality work from current/former staffers.

I'll show my age.....

Mugsy played a lot at Second Chance in the late 70s.  They featured a lead axeman named "Guitar" Joey Gaydos.  IIRC, his son played Zack Mooneyham in "School of Rock" (and just got arrested in Florida recently).  The Slang were semi-regulars at Rick's in the early 80s; they eventually were the backup band for Joe Henry (Madonna's brother-in-law).  With a few breaks, Sonic's Rendezvous Band could have been nationally known - "City Slang" is still a tour de force.  I had a class with one of the guys in The Infidels; they put out a single in '79 or '80.  They also backed up Ragnar Kvaran, who also had a couple of singles at that time.  Not sure that either of them ever put out full albums.

I would have transferred…

I would have transferred after my sophomore year to a school with a stellar radio/TV department (maybe Northwestern?  Syracuse?  UCLA?). in order to pursue a career in broadcasting.

I would have been much less successful (not that I'm wallowing in the lap of luxury!), I would never have met my wonderful wife, and I might not have my awesome family, but I would go to work each day at a job that I enjoyed, instead of spending the past 35+ years in a career that leaves me perpetually frustrated.

I'm OK at what I do, but I would have been a helluva sportscaster.

At this point in the Big Ten…

At this point in the Big Ten season, teams have been well scouted.  Points will be harder to come by -- not only for us, but for our opponents as well.

There was way too much 1-on-1 last night -- note our low assist total.  We're at our best offensively when points flow through the offense.  Meanwhile, our D will continue to keep us in games (though there may be some more slogfests light last night).

Time Flies....

Take lots of photos and videos.  Note milestones (first tooth, first steps, first words, etc.).

Each year will pass more and more quickly.  It'll feel like you have blinked a few times, and he'll be in middle school, high school, college -- and graduating from college, as my daughter will do on Father's Day.

One word of advice from the future:  IMO, the best college graduation present that you can give your son is to have him graduate debt-free.

Congratulations, and enjoy the ride!!

Typo in Paragraph 118 of the Lawsuit

Gotta love the reference to "Ingraham County".

FWIW, Rusty Hardin is a pretty big name in Houston legal circles.  Has represented Roger Clemens and several other local pro athletes.

Rick Leach lived in West Quad

I lived in West Quad Chicago House from '76-78.  Gene Johnson, Mark Schmerge, Chip Pederson, Mark Braman, Dale Keitz, and Bob Patek all lived in Chicago House -- as did future Gold Medal wrestler Steve Fraser.

Leach lived on the ground floor of Adams House.  He was an incredible pinnball player.  Ungodly hand/eye coordination.  I remember him winning 20+ free games on "Spirit of '76".

In the fall of '77. the football players were moved to South Quad.  West Quad received hockey players.  John Olver, Gordie Hampson, Tim Manning, Rudy Varvari, and Jeff Mars all lived in Chicago House as frosh.  Former All-Time leading women's basketball scorer Diane Dietz lived in Chicago House as well!

Memories of Reg In the fall of 1976, I had a small part in Soph Show's performance of "How to Succeed in Business Without Realky Trying". Reg had one of the leads. The cast also included David Alan Grier, who has gone on to have a outstanding career in TV, movies, and comedy. Reg was obviously talented, but also very intelligent and VERY funny. I was not surprised to see him become successful, albeit (for the most part) as a supporting player. Sharing the stage with Reg (and Dave, for that matter) was an honor--especially for someone with my obvious lack of acting chops!! I would've loved to have had the chance to reminisce with him. He's gone way too soon.
Donlon's D

Don't forget that Billy Donlon now coaches Northwestern's defense.  He knows our personnel as well as anyone.

NW had a good gameplan.  Passing the ball around the perimeter against the matchup zone doesn't do much, and that - plus waiting until the end of the shot clock to force up an out-of-range 3 or an awkward 2 - resulted in the poor offensive output at the beginning of the game.

I would've liked to have seen JB put Duncan and Poole in at the first TV time-out, rather than waiting an extra few minutes.

Duncan wasn't throwing up airballs or Tony Tolbert-esque bricks.  He rimmed out at least 3 of the three-point attempts and had another rattle out.

More important, the presence of Duncan and Poole opened up the floor.  Simpson and MAAR were able to drive to the hoop in the second half and Mathews was able to free himself along the baseline.

Another telling comment.....

"Senior people (at MSU) are not complicit in what this pervert did."

I assume that Kathie Klages does not qualify as "senior people".  Hope she likes the view from under the bus.

A Tourney matchup I wouldn't be surprised to see.....

M vs. West Virginia

Teske and Wagner should both have been in

Carson Edwards is inbounding the ball.  He's 6'1" at best.

Why not have Teske guard him on the throw-in???  Either he'll have to try to lob over a guy who's a foot taller, or Haas will have to come out farther from the basket to get the inbounds pass - and it will take him longer to get back onto the low block to make his plodding move to the basket.

Ignore the officiating for a moment

1)  Purdue shot 7-10 on 3s in the first half and was over 50% for the game.  Some were contested, but PJ Thompson (who is shooting 49% on 3s for the year) was wide open on both of his.

2)  Purdue got back-to-back put-backs on offensive rebounds in the second half from Nojel Eastern, a freshman who otherwise looked lost on the court.  Failure to block out twice in a row; don't blame D-Rob, he wasn't in the game.

3) When Brooks and Teske are on the court at the same time, our offense seriously suffers.  We're basically playing 3-on-5.

4)  We have the final possession.  JB is preparing to call a time-out (we have 2 left) with roughly 15 seconds to go.  Matthews waves him off, and essentially freelances.  Worse yet, he drives to his left, making a drive-and-dish all but impossible.  Even if Matthias doesn't get his hand on the ball, Haas is waiting to clean up.

5)  Purdue inbounds the ball with 6 seconds left.  We have a foul to give.  So of course Zavier fouls Carson Edwards - he should.  But why so soon??  Edwards was dribbling to his off-side, away from the basket.  Z should have waited another 1-2 seconds; instead, Purdue still has 4.8 on the clock.

6)  Purdue is inbounding the ball with 4.8 left and no time-outs.  Everyone in Crisler knows that the ball is going to Haas.  Carson Edwards (all 6'0" of him) is inbounding the ball.  Here's where a creative substitution could have made a difference -- I fully agree that Teske should have subbed in to guard the inbounds pass.  it would have been awfully tough to get the ball over him.  If he deflects and M recovers, we still have 1 time-out to set up a final play.

7)  Livers rebounded the missed final FT with 3.8 seconds left.  M has 1 timeout left.  Why not use it to set up something other than a desperation heave?

Having said all of that, I hope that this team is able to grow together.  Purdue started 4 seniors (Haas, Thompson, Vince Edwards, Matthias).  The Boilers don't have anywhere as much talent on their roster top to bottom as MSU, but they're a group of battle-tested veterans....and Thompson, Matthias, and Carson Edwards can drain 3s from NBA range.

One final observation: JB found some success late in the first half with Livers and D-Rob on the court at the same time. If Mo and Teske aren't going to play together, a lineup of MAAR/Matthews/D-Rob/Livers/Mo (or Teske) is likely the biggest lineup that we have - and can also get up and down the floor pretty quickly.

The right doctor.....

can make a world of difference.

I've undergone cancer surgery twice.  The first time, I had slight swelling n my neck.  My wife made me go to an ENT specialist - who immediately referred me for a biopsy.  Two weeks later I was on the operating table at U-M Hopital.

The second time (over 20 years later), in the course of an annual checkup, the doctor (again at U-M) requested an ultrasound simply on the basis of how my neck felt.  I could've been suspicious that she was simply padding my bill; however, the ultrasound led to a biopsy, three scans, and the operating table.  In addition to removing the tumor, the surgeon pinpointed six lymph nodes that appeared to be suspicious and removed them.  Four proved to be cancerous.

Medical science continues to grow in leaps and bounds.  Hopefully cures will someday be found for diseases that currently have no cure (DIPG comes immediately to mind).  Hopefully the AL doctor will be able to assist you!

Can't get enough of McGary's pick....

to free up Trey for the tying shot.

4 Big Ten Teams Currently Ranked in Top 25

The conference is a bit more distinguished in women's hoops this year.

Ohio State, Maryland, Iowa, and Michigan are all ranked in the AP Top 25, and Rutgers is just outside the Top 25.

There should be more than 2 teams in this year's NCAA tourney.

Artis Gilmore made them legit in 1970

Incredible that he's now 68 years old.

The Report won't shield MSU in a courtroom

The Report can't be used as evidence.  The victms that were not interviewed by Fitzgerald's firm will testify.  The jury will hear about Nasser's reprehensible conduct in graphic detail.  The damage award will be huge, and MSU will be squarely in the cross-hairs.

The FTs were not works of art

His first attempt hit the heel, bounced high into the air, and went in.

He banked in his third attempt.

He might be better off jumpshooting the FTs.

So few left.....

Vin Scully is in a class by himself.

Al Michaels.

Bob Costas

Bryant Gumbel.

Verne Lundquist and Brent Musberger have been around forever, but to call them "good" might be a stretch.

Have to prove that they can win on the road

Winning on the road is far from a given....the OSU game is proof.

I predicted a 10-8 conference record before the start of Big Ten play, and am sticking by that prediction.  An NCAA berth will ride on our performance in the Big Ten Tournament.

Not intended to be that way, Clarence....

If he ends up a commit, gonna have to pronounce his name while doing stats.  Was dead serious about seeking info on pronunciation.  Same with Timmy B. years ago.
