Since Bredeson was supposedly in the mix to start at LT this year I think he will slide out there in 2017. Ideally we could move him to RT in 2018 if we land an elite LT this year.
Due to the lack of depth on the interior of the DL I think Onwenu will be the backup nose guard if he doesn't win an offensive guard spot. I think he would be an excellent space eater behind Mone.
I could see an OL of:
Bredeson / Kugler / Cole / Dawson / Ulizio
to start the year.
The DL will be fine if Hurst comes back. If not, you may have to push Gary inside and roll the dice with some of the young ends as I don't think we can expect much from Dwumfour yet and you don't want to be forced to start freshman. The depth there is quite worrisome.
I don't think we can count on Winovich yet as a starter but he should get all of the pass rush snaps. Someone like Kemp could easily overtake him as the "starter" and split reps.

I think SOMETHING probably took place with this but the article is HORRIFICLY written and the author clearly doesn't understand how legal documents work.
I also find it interesting that the accuser managed to sue Donna Karan based on another similar incident.

Gardner hasn't had any mobility since he was hurt against Penn State on that awful hurry up QB sneak. He can't manipulate the pocket well, escape, or make cuts while running. Watch him glide around last year vs. now it's completely different.
|2 years 4 weeks ago||A.C.- Funchess had 8 catches||
Funchess had 8 catches on the season last year through 4 games trying to play TE. Starting with the Minnesota game he started primarly playing WR and immediately had 7 for 152 and a TD in that game alone.
On top of that he was nearly useless as an inline blocker.
Trying to play Funchess at TE was one of the numerous failures of the current coaching staff when it comes to putting players in a position to succeed and harming the team in the process.
But I know this is irrelevant because you've watched every Michigan game for the past 30 years.

He was trying to differentiate between getting your assignment correct in terms of blocking and the penalty of targeting a defenseless player.
I expect MSU to lead in that kind of targeting as they usually do. Lewis should have been thrown out last year on the first completion of the game to Gallon.

|2 years 6 weeks ago||QB Sneak||
No comment on how DEHD the hurry up QB sneak thing is now that it's on film and the ONLY THING MICHIGAN RUNS IN THAT SITUATION!?
Just like the speed option audible last year that was telegraphed by the change to the Pistol, that horrible play got Gardner hurt while getting stuffed. They tried to run it earlier in the game needing 2 1/2 and that was about to get stuffed too.
MSU will be more than prepared. Do you think we'll have the half brain required to have some sort of counter to it to catch them off guard? I doubt it. This is a coaching staff that had to use the one good counter they've had all year against Miami. NTM.

Arizona isn't starting 5 freshman or sophomores on D. They are starting 2 or 3. Now that Bondurant is starting and basically playing linebacker the only first or second year players that are really starting much are Scooby Wright and Jarvis McCall. Wright is a true soph and McCall a RS freshman.
I'm not really sure what that has to do with anything though.
|2 years 8 weeks ago||Scott Frost||
I like Frost although he's likely to end up at Nebraska and I can't imagine Michigan hiring a coordinator with no head coaching experience.
He played for:
& coached under Chip Kelly.
Not a bad list of coaches...
He's also coached (and played) on offense and defense

And since then the defense has gotten worse not better...
Zero freshman were forced to play on the O-line last year. The only true freshman that played was Bosch and there were several other options. That was just a coaching decision and seemingly a mistake considering the results.
I'm not arguing that experience was an issue on the O-Line last year but the coaching staff made a complete clusterfuck of the situation with the constant shuffling of personnel and scheme.
I watched Oregon take out Sparty 2 weeks ago with major offensive line problems. Coaching matters and it's hard to argue that our coaching is making the most of what we have anywhere on the field.
|2 years 12 weeks ago||The inmates run the asylum.||
The inmates run the asylum. That is the issue and has been since Bo died and Lloyd retired. If you are going to hire a football coach based on the fact that former players from a bygone era like the guy you're sunk. Especially when they submarine the guy hired in the first place.
|2 years 12 weeks ago||Terrible players on the OL||
Terrible players on the OL such as Lewan, Schofield, and Omameh? All in the NFL. It's fair to say that RR didn't recruit ENOUGH offensive lineman but considering most Hoke supporters think you can't have a good offensive line without redshirt juniors and seniors on it I doubt it would have made much difference. After all, RR was only around for 3 seasons and really only had 2 1/2 recruiting classes.
This thread is pretty tedious and all the same arguments come out. The bottom line right now is that RR and Hoke both look like terrible hires albeit for different reasons.
Hoke seems to be a good recruiter (helped by the fact that the athletic department and football alumni are supporting him rather than forcing him out the door and saying things like Lloyd Carr's senior class won the Sugar Bowl) but beyond that his tenure is an embarassment. That he and members of his staff are openly and privately contempuous of the spread is disturbing when tempo, option, and spread concepts have infiltrated every level of football. When the Seattle Seahawks are running plays stolen from Gus Malzahn I think it might be time to stop pretending that the spread is somehow beneath Michigan.
That said, the offense Nussmeier runs is very much one back based and incorporates many spread concepts. He's a disciple of John L. Smith and in that coaching tree along with former Lions OC Scott Linehan. These are not "manball" guys. That might be good or bad depending on your point of view.
The biggest issue I see is that our supposed ready made talent such as Kalis and Derrick Green stinks. That Kalis can't get on the field ahead of a true freshman, a walkon, and Jack Miller is very disturbing. Does anyone think Green looks like the #1 back in the country? Recruiting rankings matter but talent identification is a huge issue right now.
