Green being behind Hayes and Smith after all of bowl practice was not encouraging.

Tyler Lockett is great but he's not the best WR in the country.

Why do most of the comments imply Borges has already been hired? He's likely just being floated by his agent. If not, it's a weird marriage between him and Kelly to say the least.

Notre Dame runs primarily a passing spread. Ran quite a bit of pistol this year.

You left out Hayes who was the #1 back in the bowl. He will play as either a tailback, slot, or third down back at the very least.

I agree with most of this. However, I think it's a stretch to say that Michigan runs mostly out of the gun. Certainly not the case in 2013 and it's clearly not the goal of the staff.

All of you applauding Dave Brandon...do you enjoy being lied to like a politician begging for votes?
I understand why this blog was written but the execution is miserable. A short, direct, statement of support would have been fine and served it's purpose. Instead we get Brandon's deceptive comments and weird commentary regarding past coaching standards.
This is a man that is completely insecure because he knows he hired a cheerleader that no other BCS team would ever have. Then, he pays him like he's coveted by the NFL because Brandon made his useless comments about how Michigan needs to pay for the best to get the best.
Do you really think it was in ANY WAY necessary to pay Brady Hoke more than RR?
It's literally only so fans can't point to his salary and say Brandon was being cheap.
Beyond that, he had the nerve to compare this season with NICK SABAN at Alabama in his 4th year. Saban won the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP IN YEAR 3. Are you kidding? And in his "down" year he was 10-3.
Those 3 losses were against a ranked South Carolina team, #10 LSU, and Auburn. With Cam Newton. The eventual NATIONAL CHAMPIONS.
Sounds just like this year with Hoke.
Now that I think about it, we're really not being fair to Hoke. Sure this year has sucked but we did win the National Championship and go undefeated last year just like Nick Saban at Alabama so everyone just quiet down. Nothing to see here.

I watched the while Oregon/Stanford and Oregon could have been up early without a costly dropped pass and red zone mistakes.

Oregon wasn't smoked by Stanford. And Mariota was hurt. They also haven't played Alabama. You have your preconceived notions and you're woefully wrong.

*We are behind where we'd like to be because of Denard.
Apparently I must be dreaming of their ineptitude under center in 2011 and 2012 because they never installed any of it.

Oh. I see now in Angelique's article from the Borges presser that he's now saying they're two years behind in installing their offense, ostensibly because of Denard.
That is laughably absurd and just a flat lie.

Does anyone think it's odd/troubling that the stated goal of the Hoke regime since day 1 has been to run the power O and they've been awful at it for 3 straight years?
|16 weeks 5 days ago||Regarding execution this||
Regarding execution this reminds me of something I read in a Chip Kelly presentation:
"If your players have not run that play in a critical situation over a thousand times in practice, you will not have a chance to be successful. With our inside zone play, we get so much practice time and so many reps that we can handle all the other scenarios that come about. Instead of trying to outscheme your opponent, put your players in an environment where they understand exactly what they have to do."

Oregon started varying these tendencies a couple of years ago and now regularly motions the back into position just before the snap.
|17 weeks 31 min ago||Alabama is primarily a zone||
Alabama is primarily a zone blocking team. We run some zone but I don't think I'm off base saying Hoke/Borges are in love with pulling lineman, man blocking, etc. To a fault. They haven't been able to run the power O against a decent defense in 3 years despite the fact that it's supposed to be our bread and butter. Think about that for a minute.
Even when Borges is forced to run plays from the gun or "spread" he tries very hard to run them with man blocking principles and pulling lineman.
|17 weeks 2 days ago||Stanford played well||
and exactly how they needed to play in order to win but it wasn't a beat down.
Oregon missed a wide open TD on their opening drive and shot themselves in the foot repeatedly in the redzone. If they had scored 7 or 14 in the first half I think they win quite comfortably and they had plenty of opportunities to do so.
Either way, I'd gladly take the run that Stanford and Oregon have both been on for the past several years out of Michigan.

We've had a better RB yards per carry out of the shotgun every season since Hoke took over. And it's not particularly close.

You might want to check your facts before rattling off nonsense.
Chip Kelly was 4-2 against Stanford and lost last year in overtime.
He was 46-7 in his 4 years. I would be extremely happy if Hoke could put together a 4 year run like that but in order to do so he'll have to win his next 23 games in a row.

There is no QB play action in the playbook. Michigan hasn't run that since 2011 and not well since 2010.
Meanwhile, the only QB run Devin has executed is the Draw. The rest of his carries are on scrambles or keepers on the option. Maybe a fake option if Brian's hypothesis is correct. When Denard ran the "Oh Noes" it was playaction off of the outside zone or ISO. So, what would Devin even be faking?
Michigan's running plays are all telegraphed by formation.
Under center it's the stretch, power, or ISO.
From the pistol it's inside zone/belly.
In the shotgun they have the inverted veer and QB draw.
There are a couple of other variations but nothing fits together and there aren't any adjustments made to any of the plays. When something doesn't work, Borges just tries running something else rather than tinkering.
If you're going to run the stretch play as much as we have been it's indefensible to NEVER run it from the gun when Devin Gardner is your QB. That's on the staff.
|23 weeks 5 days ago||the stretch, etc.||
Brian, you're on the money here.
Firstly, the stretch. My head has sufficiently exploded now.
This staff did everything they could not to run the stretch since they took over. Still having nightmares about the pin & pull zone?
Beyond that, they didn't run an outside zone one time with Denard. Not once. They tried the QB sweep but it was usually slow to develop.
Now all of a sudden the stretch is their pet play and THEY ONLY RUN IT UNDER CENTER!?
Under center, we run the stretch, power, and iso.
From the pistol it's inside zone/belly.
Shotgun we have QB draw and inverted veer and the showed the sprint counter last game. But I know you'll remark in the UFR...counter to what???
That's our run game. It's predictable yet discombobulated. If you're gonna run the stretch why not at least run it a few times a game from the shotgun with a read?
Where's the arc blocking and anything besides the inside zone from the pistol?
What is our bread and butter? Basically Devin sometimes being an untackleable killing machine.
P.S. $10 says they try the check to the speed option against MSU and most likely to the boundary.

|25 weeks 6 days ago||Correct. The linked play is||
Correct. The linked play is just a play action pass with a mesh point. "QB Oh Noes" was first used on the Roundtree TD against ND in 2010. The play was called "Rocket" as pointed out by John U. Bacon in 3 and Out.
Borges did try using Denard run action a few times in 2011, most notably against MSU but the plays were not run crisply and abandoned thereafter based on my recollection.
|26 weeks 5 days ago||Interesting||
to see the stretch return all of a sudden...anyone think they can/will run it out of the shotgun with a read? Doubtful but that would also be useful against ND.
