My guidance counselor also…

My guidance counselor also told me not to bother applying… He said I’d be better off going to a school that wasn’t as competitive because I could save money and get better grades.
I still remember my dad telling me that all feedback is valuable, and the most important skill to develop is the ability to determine what you should listen to vs what you should ignore, because there is no shortage of opinions in the world.
Good thing I didn’t listen to that no talent asshole.

I use Hulu Live but mainly because my AmEx gives me $20 monthly statement credit. Hulu Live makes more sense if you also intend to pay for the Hulu regular library.

It's fine. Like all the rest. Becoming overpriced. But the credit + library keeps me there for now.

Grits are supposed to be…

Grits are supposed to be dressed up, that's the point. I never understood the disdain. Grits with a little butter and cheddar, salt and pepper, two sunny side up eggs on top with chopped chives is splendid. Or grits with a little olive oil, onions, and old bay with grilled shrimp? Perfect.

Or, if you've ever had a pork chop served on top of creamy mushroom polenta... fun fact, polenta is grits. Just stone ground yellow corn instead of white corn. Mix in a bit of cream, chicken stock, roasted mushrooms, garlic and thyme.

I concede they're unhealthy. But, so is anything else delicious. You wouldn't crave a plate of plain white rice. Or a bowl of pasta without sauce. Grits should get the same leeway.

For the first time ever, can…

For the first time ever, can we NOT trust allies? In fact, can we please betray allies? We have this weird idealistic belief that everyone will play nice because 'diplomacy'...

This is the internet. You will never mind a more wretched hive of scum and villiany.

I'm surprised at how…

I'm surprised at how surprised we are when other teams betray us. Are we really that naive?

EDIT: Can someone just do a quick topography of the map and identify where there are the most conjoined territories that can be protected by the fewest border territories? I.e., X territories can be fully protected via Y territories. Maximize X, minimize Y, based on some assumptions we have about our ability to defend Y territories with our army #'s.

Then we should beeline swarm to the centerpoint of that area, and then spiral outward to the defensible borders. Then hold until the end.

Nice.

Interesting. Admirable, if…

Interesting. Admirable, if so. But...

How many people ask/are asked in a job interview "So why this company? Why this role? What motivates you?" How many said things other than money? And being honest with yourself, what was the real reason? Many say they're looking for a good fit, strong teams, long runway to learn and grow. And I'm also guessing they're declining the role if it doesn't pay more than their current position. Talking money is a cultural faux pas but it shouldn't be.

For me, I'd be really contemplating my odds of making it into the NFL. And, with a realistic view, I'd probably bias toward a school with the most NIL money and a good academic reputation. $400k/yr ($1.6M over 4)  is a significant head start in professional life.  Relationships matter... but at what point can you say with confidence your head coach, assistance coaches, position coaches are truly going to be there for your four years. There are Michigan players on their 3rd DC in 3 years.

You could order a 750ml…

You could order a 750ml bottle on Drizzly for $250. Just depends on what's worth it to ya. Drizzly also pulls from local inventory, so you could get an easy lead on who has it in stock (presuming they partner with Drizzly for delivery).

Fair point. Did some digging…

Fair point. I'd argue the difference is the 4th round pick is established and evaluated as such. The 5-star is still an unknown commodity (in the sense you don't know where they'd end up NFL-wise). Did some digging. 2010-2018 (what I could quickly find with low effort):

292 5-star players over this span:

  • 17% (49) drafted in rounds 1-3
  • 40% (118) drafted in rounds 4-7
  • 43% (125) went undrafted

EDIT: So you're roughly paying 4th round money for a player who has a 17% likelihood of outperforming that valuation, on top of the fact that the payers (boosters) are not uniformly benefiting financially from the on-field output (advertising revenue arguably aside... does anyone really buy a car from a specific dealer because a college player said so?) while NFL franchises are profiting directly... seems... expensive. Relatively speaking.

Imagine being a high school…

Imagine being a high school player getting offers bigger than NFL Veteran minimums.

EDIT: blowing this out more. Average 4-year contract value by round drafted:

First round: $18.4 million
Second round: $6.9 million
Third round: $4.4 million
Fourth round: $3.3 million
Fifth round: $2.95 million
Sixth round: $2.8 million
Seventh round: $2.7 million

When you reduce these values by 3% for agent fees and then prorate the 4-year contract value to account for the average NFL tenure of 3.3 years... and then convert this total to a 1-year salary, you get the following total expected earnings, for the average player, by draft round, per year played:

First round: $4.5 million
Second round: $1.7 million
Third round: $1.1 million
Fourth round: $0.8 million
Fifth round: $0.7 million
Sixth round: $0.7 million
Seventh round: $0.7 million

Assuming taxes are the same, some of these high school players are getting comp - in practice - better than the average '3.3-year career and out of the league' 4th round draft pick.

2014: pre season heisman candidate Braxton Miller is lost for the season with a torn labrum. Backup JT Barrett breaks his ankle vs UM and is lost for the postseason. 3rd string Cardale Jones leads them to a National Championship.

Losing first and second string QBs in the same season is very serious. Season changing though? Sigh. Siiiiiigh. No it wasn’t.

Sorry to hear that. I work for one of the FAANG companies and general consensus is the belt is tightening, demands will be greater, and if employees want to self-select out, that's okay, let 'em leave.

Open roles are currently frozen or need high exec level approval. It very much feels like a "brace for impact" scenario.

I just ordered (6mo ago and only recently taking delivery) two BMWs and you can track via the buying process. I knew when my cars hit the line, entered the paint booth, went through assembly, left the factory in Germany, arrived at outbound port in Bremerhaven, the ship it left on (Olympian Highway), when it arrived at the inbound port (Brunswick GA), loaded onto a truck, and arrived at dealership.

I know a lot of jest is thrown at the buyers of these cars in this thread, but I personally would’ve been heartbroken.

So even if one team has 130…

So even if one team has 130 players with great Power 5 level ability, half of those guys still transfer elsewhere through the portal.

Correct… but let me ask you this: if you had to field a team of 22, would you rather be picking the best players out of 130 options? Or out of 85.

And do you care if the players that didn’t “make it” transfer?

This is the same logic that’ll make a Class 6A Texas football team always better than a Class 2A Texas football team. More players from which to choose = greater likelihood of having higher caliber players across the entire roster. Let the extra 40 players transfer.

An athletics major would be…

An athletics major would be a useless degree.  Sports teams aren't going to care about it, and neither is any other industry these players might fall back on.

First of all, a degree being useless by your definition does not prevent it from existing nor from people wanting to pursue it. There's always academia. See: Ancient Civilizations and Biblical Studies, or History, or many other degree programs. There's also entrepreneurship.

Running it as essentially a…

Running it as essentially a non-profit and using it as a means to compensate players via ad revenue could be huge for non-revenue sports athletes that never get televised.

Create the Michigan TV…

Create the Michigan TV network that has exclusive rights to all UM home games for all sports. All TV ads on the network from any brands will require UM player endorsements on their respective Instagram pages.

Every athlete makes a post about that sweet velveeta and rotel dip  and velveeta can then get ad time on the Michigan network. And the ad money gets distributed to all players equally.

The TV deal money is just advertising money pass through. Cut out the middle man network.

Bose can be the official exclusive premium audio sponsor of blah blah blah. Ford gets exclusive auto commercials if they give every player a car of their choosing and they post about it on their IG pages. Etc.

The companies pay into a player fund that's distributed and Michigan sells them the airtime for $1.

My thoughts: this is a team…

My thoughts: this is a team of destiny that is peaking at the right time. UGA looks vulnerable and exposed. All I know is they’re worse than Bama and better than Kentucky. Not the juggernaut I had assumed

I think UM has a legitimate chance to win and then anything can happen.
