My best guess would be right around a quarter million? No idea...this tourney has a rich purse.

Edit: Based on last year, dropping from a potential 1st to 8th lost him about $1.5 million dollars.

I think he has potential as a Chris Johnson type tailback. Assuming he wows the scouts at the combines, he should put on 15lbs of muscle. He has a chance as a Percy Harvin type if he can prove his hands are adequate, however I don't see him being drafted as a KR/PR considering he has never done that in a game at the NCAA level.

If I were an owner, I'd probably take him in the low 3rd/high 4th round.

Because a sack would effectively end the game or create a Hail Mary scenario. That and not blitzing doesn't guarantee they don't get enough yards for the game winning FG. The blitz sack was close on the previous two plays. It was just a hell of a throw in the nick of time.

31 weeks 4 days ago Overall, I have mixed

Overall, I have mixed emotions about him.  One one hand, he made the throws he was assigned yesterday and was hurt by the drops of his teammates.  That said, it is beyond obvious that the coaches reign in the playbook when he is on the field.  I thought that when he came in for Denard when we were deep in the red zone that play action would be a great choice given our repitition of running plays.

Of course, a lot of this has to do with having the game already in hand by the time he sees a lot of action, but just from a fan's perspective, I'm anxious to see his arm tested in trips or 4wr sets in meaningful play.

But if I was forced to make a generalization on him as a player without a ton of evidence, I would classify him as fairly accurate but limited in arm strength.

It will definitely be a tough decision for the coaching staff between our 3 QB's for next year.

Yes, I understand that.  I was asking how the OP figures we would lose when we already have 11, currently lead in 3 matches, and the other two are all square.  I think that's a little on the fence to essentially say US defeat is imminent.

1 year 9 weeks ago Question: since it wasn't on

Question: since it wasn't on the schedule, is it considered an exhibition game or does the win actually count toward the season W/L record? In theory, could coaches all over the country just agree to play impromptu games at the last minute that affect season results?

1 year 9 weeks ago Don't spend so much time over

Don't spend so much time over analyzing the shit out of the new weight. The absolute max is probably only 3 pounds or so depending on what they ate the night before.

1 year 9 weeks ago My original response (and the

My original response (and the point of my comment) was that I don't see Morris as a freshman as a liability on the two-deep and as someone with his apparent ability and recruiting profile should be able to step in and compete with Bellomy for the starting job.  I'm using Chad Henne as a basis for measurement because of his success as a freshman.

What do you want me to say?  When looking at tape, I subjectively think Morris as a junior is more skilled than Henne as a senior.  Henne has nothing to do with the 2012 class and I'm not saying he does. I'm using that as a basis to compare Morris to his peers and the fact that he maintains his stature as one of the top prep QB's in the country.  You are missing the point of my post entirely in order to nit pick over the statement that to me Morris right now is further along than Henne was as a senior.

No, I don't have any sort of advanced metrics to spew to you.

1 year 9 weeks ago Recruiting analysts have

Recruiting analysts have often mentioned that Morris's ability as a junior would have put him around the top of this year's recruiting class.  And while I agree that Henne's performance should not be expected from every frosh QB, I don't think it's unrealistic to expect that sort of ability from similarly (or better) ranked QBs.  I still maintain what I said: Morris, as a 5-star QB with ability as a junior that's comparable to his senior counterparts, should be able to compete with Bellomy for the starting job.  And in so many words, the fact that he is a freshman does not concern me.

1 year 9 weeks ago Morris's skill in high school

Morris's skill in high school is better as a junior than Chad Henne was as a senior.  And Henne led Michigan to a Rose Bowl as a true freshman.  I am not concerned about Morris being the back up.  For all intents and purposes, I expect him to compete for the starting job.  I think the pros outweigh the cons in having Gardner at WR for this year at least.  He can always move back to QB if his skills are needed there.

1 year 9 weeks ago Gardner.

Gardner.

1 year 9 weeks ago Yeah but Randle El was the

Yeah but Randle El was the starter.  That would be as asinine as Michigan moving Denard to WR.  I get your point - it's possible to go back to QB after playing WR, but we're talking about a backup QB who is a great athlete.  Why not get him on the field in a position where he can excel as opposed to waiting on the sidelines in case Denard gets dinged up?

1 year 9 weeks ago Is it that nuts?  Is it nuts

Is it that nuts?  Is it nuts to think Chris Perry's backup (Underwood), a 4* rated upperclassman would lose the starting job to a 3* freshman RB (Hart)?

And we all know how that turned out.  Point being, you never know when an athlete can "make the jump" and all of a sudden be a good player.  Maybe this offseason was great for Bellomy and the coaches see talent there and trust him to be a QB in an as-needed capacity while getting Gardner on the field in a role that utilizes his talents better than being on the sideline with a clipboard.

1 year 9 weeks ago This type of thing isn't that

This type of thing isn't that unrealistic.  MSU did it successfully in Nichol's first year at WR where Nichol was still the primary backup should Cousins go down.  Ultimately, if the coaches see that there isn't much of an ability disparity between Bellomy and Gardner, this allows us to get a superb athlete with size and speed in a position of great need this year.

Just remember, Gardner playing WR doesn't necessarily mean that he will never play QB again.  If Denard were to lose substantial time due to injury, I could just as easily see Gardner getting more reps at QB in practice and we go from there.  If Denard is just sitting out a few plays, I would say it's not unreasonable for the coaches to think Bellomy (QB) + Gardner (WR) is a better combination than Gardner (QB) + ? (WR).

1 year 9 weeks ago Gah, typo.  Thanks for the

Gah, typo.  Thanks for the catch.  I think Murray State is the toughest team to figure out.  Solid record, lowly competition, are they actually good? I guess we'll find out

1 year 9 weeks ago I was thinking about this

I was thinking about this during our game yesterday - do you think there is an adjustment that teams from the B1G have to make when playing in the tourney with regard to physicality of play?  It's pretty well known that the B1G is a physical and "rough" conference, so with teams/players in that mentality would there be a higher propensity for what we would all consider "ticky tack" fouls that would otherwise be allowed in conference play? And do players have to scale back the contact to match the consistency of refs from other leagues?

1 year 10 weeks ago You're right, thanks for the

You're right, thanks for the catch.  I must have misread their W/L (31-9? 40 games in a season? I should have caught that...).  I don't think they jump up to a 3-seed, but anything is possible if they beat Kentucky.  Either way, I would think if they won the SEC they would take Georgetown's spot before ours.  I still think our odds at a 3-seed are 60%, with a 2 or 4-seed probably at 20% each if we win out or lose to Ohio, respectively.  Especially given the weak field on our tails and IU's struggle and injury.

1 year 10 weeks ago I would agree that Michigan

I would agree that Michigan would be considered for a 2-seed but only if we beat OSU and MSU (but not Wisconsin).  At that point, I think we very well could bump either OSU or MSU to the 3-seed line and take their spot assuming the chips fall the way they're supposed to elsewhere.  But ultimately, I don't see a huge difference between a high 3-seed or a low 2-seed.  There might be instances where being a high 3-seed could get us an easier draw depending on matchups.

That said, we would be the only 2-seed in the last 6 years to have 8 losses, however there appears to be more league parity this year which makes it possible.

1 year 10 weeks ago If we beat Ohio I believe we

If we beat Ohio I believe we are a 3-seed regardless of any other outcomes.  If we lose, I think we are a 4-seed if Wisconsin beats MSU (Wisconsin would move up to a 3-seed in my opinion).  The other "dark horse" team could be Florida if they win the SEC tournament by going through Kentucky.  They would finish 31-9 and SEC Champs with a recent win over a consensus #1 seed.

This is why I think we need to beat Ohio to solidly take a 3-seed.  If we lose, I think it's a coin flip that the selection committee puts us at a 4-seed depending on what happens around us.  Obviously, IU's loss helps us and if Wisconsin loses, it might be a moot point.

Either way, the 2-seed (and 1-seed?!?!) talk is a little wishful thinking in my opinion.

1 year 10 weeks ago Going back to 2006 (the past

Going back to 2006 (the past 5 years) the #1 seed with the most losses was UNC at 28-6 in 2007.  We have no chance at a 1 seed regardless of what happens in the BTT.  These are maize and blue delusions of grandeur.

Additionally, no teams with 8 losses or more have been a 2 seed in the past 5 years.

Since 2006, there have only been 4 teams with 8 losses or more to even get to a 3 seed.

2010: (3) Pittsburgh 24-8;
2009: (3) Syracuse 26-9 (BET Runner-Up);
2008: (3) Louisville 24-8;
2006: (3) Iowa 25-8 (won BTT);

My guess is even if beating MSU and OSU, we get a 3 seed, albeit one of the "higher" 3 seeds.  If we lose to Ohio, I believe there is a 50% chance we get a 4 seed.

We all should take a deep breath and be thankful we have squeaked out so many close wins this year.  With 3 overtime wins and two more wins that we squeaked out by two points, we realistically could have finished 19-13 and in the NIT if a few bounces go against us (think Northwestern's season's luck).

That's not to discredit the team's success this year, which should be applauded, but for a 2-seed (let alone a 1-seed) can any of us realistically say there are only 7 other teams in the country better than us?

The NBA Developmental League (NBA D-League) is a separate league run in affiliation with the NBA. Teams may assign up to two of their players to an NBA D-League team. Only players with fewer than two years' experience may be assigned to an NBA D-League team, and each player can be assigned no more than three times per season. If an active player is assigned, he is automatically placed on the team's Inactive List. There is no minimum or maximum length of an NBA D-League assignment, and players have 48 hours to report to the NBA D-League team once they are assigned. Players continue to receive their NBA salary while assigned to the NBA D-League.

NBA D-League rosters are normally 10 players, but can expand to 12 to accommodate assigned NBA players. In some cases where one team might be overstocked with assignees or players at a particular position, players might be reassigned to a different team. NBA teams do not control the playing time their assignees receive -- that matter is up to the discretion of the NBA D-League coaches.

Average D-League salary is $35,000 for those without NBA contracts. Darius will continue to earn his $473,604 annual salary.

1 year 11 weeks ago Agreed.  That's tangentially

Agreed.  That's tangentially my point.  Lack of heart disease can't be attributed to decrease in livestock consumption when there are so many other factors that should be taken into account during wartime.  Especially when people were dying at alarming rates from acute infections with autopsies showing clogged arteries (still).

I know in Norway, heart disease decreased as well, though the infections likely played a part as well, but their diet saw a 200% increase in fish consumption, an increase in dairy, and odd things like seagulls.  Which, like, scavenge for whatever is edible when resources are scarce.

I, like you I assume from your post, think it's irresponsible for a documentary to make that claim when there are a ridiculous number of reasons why or why not heart disease mortality decreased during WWII.

1 year 11 weeks ago Yeah, that's the biggest

Yeah, that's the biggest thing with the whole documentary actually.  There could be a multitude of reasons why or why not health increased or decreased.  I'm not saying their proposed nutritional diet is right or wrong (I have a friend that swears by it and is living very healthily), I'm just trying to do my part to draw awareness to not accepting what a movie says as fact and to really look into sources, academic journals, etc.

I mean, if curing cancer was just as easy as only eating vegetables, you'd think it would have caught on more by now.

Ultimately, I don't care that much about the debate between meat vs. veggies.  Just sharing some stuff I found when I took a serious look into becoming vegetarian and decided that lifestyle wasn't a good fit for me personally.  One of the biggest things I have found in my academic research is a correlation between eating fish and one's health.  I try and get as high quality of fish as possible and stay away from mercury risks (swordfish/shark/albacore tuna/etc.) and opt for fish caught humanely, etc.  And outside of that, unprocessed whole grains and natural vegetables.  In the end, my final thouht (because I'm taking up a ton of my time researching again in this thread, haha) is to do your own research, pick a nutrition plan that focuses on moderation, and make sure you're happy with your lifestyle choice whatever that may be.  That will be much healthier than torturing one's self on celery and baby carrots to lose a few pounds, etc.

Just my two cents while on my own soapbox.

1 year 11 weeks ago Not a problem.  My citations

Not a problem.  My citations for some are those used by the scientists in the documentary actually:

For the mice: The Effect of Dietary Protein on Carcinogenesis of Alatoxin (linked here), which appeared in the Archives of Pathology in 1968.  In the publication, it does in fact state that the rats with a 20% casein protein (dairy protein) diet had liver tumors while the 5% casein protein did not.  However, all 30 of the high protein rats survived the whole year while only 12 of the 5% casein protein rats.  So yes, the low casien protein rats did in fact not have cancer, but they died at an alarmingly faster rate in large part to their liver cells essentially eating themselves.  I encourage you to read their "sources" to get the full picture instead of their handpicked data.

For the WWII diet: Well, in this journal, Barnes reviewed 70,000 Austrian autopsy protocols from the years 1930 to 1970, and found that cardiovascular disease mortality dropped significantly during World War II, which coincides with their claims that it was due to the decrease in livestock consumption due to the German confiscation of livestock to feed troops.  A segment from Pages 2 and 3: At Graz, heart attacks dropped 75 percent between 1939 and 1945, and it is true that people were not eating cholesterol foods during the war … Adult patients, dying from tuberculosis during the war, had a very severe degree of damage to the arteries of their hearts. … Two years later the conditions were reversed. The antibiotics against tuberculosis had become available, and deaths from this disease fell like a lead pipe. Immediately deaths from heart attacks started to rise. The autopsies gave us the answer: the adult dying from a heart attack had "healing" tuberculosis in his lungs.

Lastly, for the Japanese population moving to US "western diets", this article, Epidemiology of coronary heart disease and stroke in Japanese men living in Japan, Hawaii, and California: methodology for comparison of diet, published in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Vol 26, 177-184 (linked here) will actually show that in their diets, their flesh based meat consumption changed the least out of all dietary categories with the biggest changes coming from fish intake decreasing 32% and bread intake moving from non-existant (ate rice 2-3 times a day instead) to having bread 7+ times a week.  To be fair, there was also an increase in dairy consumption, so there is correlation there as well, though the study also includes margerine in that category which fogs "dairy" up a bit.

EDIT: and just as a disclaimer, I'm not on of those people screaming "PROTEIN!!!" like you say.  I actually eat meat quite rarely.  I do however consume a lot of fish and the meat I do eat is usually hormone free/free range chicken breast once a week.  I just don't like "documentaries" that pick data to support their conclusions, which is extra ironic given one of their sources (the mice) actually shows a higher death rate but "see?! no cancer! boo animal protein"  My fight is with irresponsible public manipulation, not vegetarians.  A vegetarian diet, just like an omnivore diet, can be very healthy if done properly and detrimental if done incorrectly, and I have no issues with supporting either.

1 year 11 weeks ago There are a lot of

There are a lot of inaccuracies and manipulating data to support your preconceived conclusion. For example, during WWII, they cite a decrease in meat consumption led to a vast decrease in heart disease. The real data will show people were dying before they would had developed heart disease from acute infections (TB, influenza, pneumonia, etc). Additionally, their post death heart wasn't that much healthier. So yes, heart disease did decrease but not for the reason they claim, it's because people were dying sooner from other things before they would have developed heart disease in the first place.

Also, in the cancer studies with the mice: They say the data supports their conclusion that a veggie diet effectively cured cancer in mice. What the full study will show is that although the meat eating mice did develop liver cancer, the veggie eating mice actually all died sooner from their liver consuming itself. So yes, cancer free, but all died 100% sooner. And that is all aside from the fact that they were exposed to levels of carcinogens much higher than humans would ever be exposed to in their lifetimes. An alternate study was performed with moderate levels of carcinogens similar to what humans could be exposed to and the reverse was found true: mice with meat and dairy protein not only lived longer but were cancer free while the vegetarian fed mice died sooner from cancer related issues.

Lastly with the predominantly fish/rice eating Asian population coming to the US and adopting a "western diet" and dying sooner. The real data shows that they moved to coastal regions and their diet changed predominantly fom rice to bread without any addition of meat/dairy from what they were eating before. when the data didn't support their claim, they adopted a general term "western diet" to hide behind. The decrease in life expectancy could be correlated to bread intake perhaps. But it irked me that they mislead the viewers by claiming a "western diet" hoping that we all assume that is Big Macs and Nesquik.

These are just some of the problems I had with this documentary. It was interesting, but chock full of correlation = causation and questionable science as proof. In many instances, the studies they found supported the opposite conclusion but when you can handpick data and assume your viewership will not research your methods and full reaults, you can aell more DVDs. I agree with the message: eat better quality foods and do so in moderation. I disagree with the notion that the problems stem from eating meat/dairy.

Considering there are about 30 athletes each year in the country given such accolades, I expect an all conference selection from those players at a minimum.  Of course it doesn't happen, and that's likely the recruiting rating being innacurate, but being a top 30 player in the country [regardless of position] should mean that you're at least one of the top 2-3 players in your conference [at your position] by the time you graduate.

5-star = potential all american

Also, I am aware that I can contact the University of Michigan by sending a letter to the aforementioned address.  I attended the University and am familiar with the locale.  Thank you for that information.

That said, as you agree with me and share the same sentiment, you can join me in constructing a letter and we can send it in together.  What do you think? Does that sound like something you might be interested in?

You are probably right, but we can't say for sure. Either way, my point was that the measure of putting the two teams against each other and detrmining who wins cannot accurately access the progress of a program as a whole.

1 year 29 weeks ago Sure, I agree with you. That

Sure, I agree with you. That said, Michigan was still hit with major NCAA violations. I don't care if it was exceeded practice time by 1 minute.  The University of Michigan should never be sanctioned for breaking major NCAA rules.  That is the standard I hold for the University of Michigan.

1 year 29 weeks ago What you should be saying is

What you should be saying is the 2008 team without departures due to the coaching change vs. the 2010 team as the addition of Hoke/Borges/Mattison most likely changed this team (mostly defense) from what it was going to be into something better.

I would wager a team that fielded Mallet at QB with Manningham and Arrington at WR with an OL that would have been better in a Hoke-type system that year with Boren (just being realistic here) and a competent downhill runner in Brandon Minor would have been able to shred a Rich Rod team with whatever 3-3-5 defense that is being fielded.

I can't personally say that Rich Rod left the program in better shape than when he arrived.  We had major NCAA violations, a stain on the program that will be there forever, in addition to two bowlless season.  Did Rich Rod's last year appear more successful than his first? Definitely.  But was the entire program better off by having Rich Rod as a coach for three years? I'd say no.

Trash talking goes too far when you throw a punch.

In all seriousness, trash talking is just a means to get inside to opponent's head to gain a mental advantage that you hope translates into a physical advantage.  Trash talking goes too far when it's insulting to the opposing player and the statements are made in public.  In the trenches, or downfield after a pass breakup, fire away.

1 year 31 weeks ago If that is the case regarding

If that is the case regarding Gholston, I would expect the conference to levy a 3 game suspension.  In the past, the conference has suspended players for much less - hit with forearm, kneeing a player, Mouton's punch vs ND in '09.  I would expect one game for each incident would be appropriate as the helmet twist, punch, and attempted arm break are outside of the game.  One could argue that the late hits, roughing the passers, etc are a part of the game.

I think what makes the matters worse for Gholston are Narduzzi's public comments that the Spartans try to play "60 minutes of unnecessary roughness. I'm just happy it didn't get called on every snap."

To the OP: what are your thoughts on the matter and what would be an appropriate response by MSU toward Gholston and Narduzzi?  Also, what would be an appropriate response by the conference should no action be taken by MSU?

1 year 32 weeks ago You want your ace to throw

You want your ace to throw Game 1 because of the off days in the series.  Whoever starts Game 1 can throw Game 4 and Game 7 on three days rest each.  That and the Rangers will be throwing their ace Game 1 due to the time off.  Rangers' #1 pitching three times gives them the advantage over throwing JV twice in games 2 and 5.

Moreover, if Detroit is down in the game, throwing Verlander won't help as you need offensive production for pitcher support.  Plus if you have a big lead (3+runs in innings 8 or 9), I wouldn't waste Verlander in the next series to close.  Additionally, JV hasn't ever pitched from the pen and that's different than starting the game.

You and I must have different theologies I suppose, but I think saving Verlander is the better long term decision.

1 year 32 weeks ago You have to trust your

You have to trust your relievers.  Verlander has been great, but it's not like he threw a perfect game vs. the Yankees last time as well.  If you throw Verlander tonight, you likely lose the ALCS anyway without Verlander for Game 1.  When the end goal is the World Series, losing in the ALDS = losing in the ALCS.

I say you save him so he can throw games 1, 4, and 7 in the ALCS to win the series and go to the World Series.

EDIT: Not saying this is the "right" answer, but I'm sure this is the train of thought that Leyland is thinking.  I trust a guy like Leyland in this situation.

Is there a rule where you have to be fully set as an offense for at least a second before you can snap the ball?  I recall something like that being mentioned.  I'm always wondering during the games why the other team wouldn't just snap it sooner during our musical chairs DL shifts.

Either way, I agree with you, I think the varying pace could be the biggest challenge the defense could face.  There is potential to get stuck in a certain defensive package then exploited in the hurry-up.

I also agree with you, however I put a little less credence in MSU's performance vs OSU.  I think it all hinges more on Cousins and his mistakes.  MSU didn't look good against FCS Youngstown State, got stomped by ND, and didn't look impressive against OSU.  I think OSU is around the same talent level as a Penn State or Iowa.  I think what hurts MSU in perception is that this OSU team is also missing their starting LT, RB, and WR.

MSU doesn't pass the "eye test" to me thus far, however the talent is there if they can bring it all together.

I see MSU finishing the year at 8-4 to 9-3 and at best, second in the Legends, but likely third.

That is all.

1 year 33 weeks ago I think Persa is a good QB,

I think Persa is a good QB, even with his achilles injury, but with his late game re-injury, it may be enough to render him relately uneffective this Saturday.  Time will tell.  If he is fairly immobile, then that should bode well for us with the complex blitz schemes.  I just hope that our CB's can blanket the WR's and allow our front 4(5) enough time to get solid pressure.

Speaking of our CB's, does anyone else start to feel that perhaps Countess is a better option at CB than Woolfolk?  I've been very impressed with his coverage skills lately.  He's really growing into quite the player.

Along those same lines, could Wile be a better option at punter than Hagerup?  Hagerup wasn't that impressive Saturday and didn't have the booming kicks Wile has had thus far.  Wind and first game back jitters may have played a part.

Overall, I like our chances this Saturday if we can keep the turnovers in check.  I think we're a better coached and better athletic team than Illinois, so I'm confident and cautiously optimistic.

1 year 36 weeks ago When I think of professional

When I think of professional football in Las Vegas, I can only really picture an XFL team.  Vegas is 'Vegas' because people travel there to spend money.  I'm not sure they could support their own team without a loyal, local contingent.  But who knows really.  I never thought Jackonville would be able to hold onto a franchise for 15+ years.  Or Charlotte for that matter.

1 year 36 weeks ago I agree with all of your

I agree with all of your points.  A few more cities that popped into my mind: Memphis, a second team in Chicago (like that would be successful, the Bears own that town), even Grand Rapids has the population, but I question the committment to an NFL franchise.

I'm not sure if teams could plant themselves in cities like Birmingham or Lincoln/Omaha and call themselves Alabama or Nebraska teams to capture state-wise support (like the Tennessee Titans have done from Nashville).  Even then, despite being football states, is there large interest in NFL football?

The northeast is solidly NE fans, the southeast is NFL oversaturated and Texas probably is too.  LA can't hold a franchise and other cities (SLC, Portland, OKC) may be weary of adding a franchise and not have the support from the smaller market.

Really, the NFL should just stay put.  Why is this even being discussed as an option?
