“Minnesota claimed 1904 in 2013.” Wait, what?  Sorry if just a typo, but genuinely curious if not.

edit: I’m an idiot. I read that as AND 2013. Carry on...

I don't think we've seen…

I don't think we've seen much RPO, but if they're going to run it, they're setting up for it and probably saving it for OSU. You're right that we really haven't seen much true RPO this year, but I'd be surprised if we don't see it down the stretch.

My wife is an ND alum (I…

My wife is an ND alum (I know, I know), so we are heading to the ND-Navy game since we live in SD. She's also a big CFB fan, so we'd probably just be watching stress-free football (for me at least), but since we're going to this game and tailgating all day, it's an added bonus that I don't have to stress about overlap with the Michigan game.

If anyone gets booted and I…

If anyone gets booted and I see it in time, I am in. I've been in the past several years but missed the cutoff this time.

I'd second this and say…

I'd second this and say still make the trip. I've done pretty much the exact same thing as OP several years ago (2012 maybe?), hopeful for finding tickets, but couldn't at a reasonable price and just went to a bar and watched instead. The night game makes it worth it because you get a full day of game day experience and festivities. Save the ~$1,000 and have a hell of a tailgate and bar tab for the game (if you're into that sort of thing).

Looking forward to heading there on Saturday. Go Blue!

Looks great! FYI, the WMU…

Looks great! FYI, the WMU date is wrong on the desktop versions (It says 9th instead of 8th).

Owning an NBA team would be a

Owning an NBA team would be a fitting story for Booger.

Centers can “usually”

Centers can “usually” relatively easily move to guard as well, and can easily shift to center if there’s an injury. A stud interior OL is a good pick and a bonus that he can snap the ball and make line calls.

Came here for this comment and wasn’t disappointed. Possibly my favorite MGoMeme of all time.

Please tell me you’re not

Please tell me you’re not actually this stupid in real life. If so, how do you live?

Dude.... holy shit I actually

For purely selfish reasons,

For purely selfish reasons, hoping for the Holiday Bowl so I can go. It would also be something different and it would be interesting to play a PAC12 team.

I generally agree with your

I generally agree with your sentiment but that’s not entirely fair to what a lot of people are arguing. Not everyone is saying the refs have a secret meeting with Jim Delaney and Voldemort to screw over Michigan royally. It doesn’t have to be predetermined. Most seem to be arguing that officials (as individuals) seem to have an issue with Michigan or more likely Jim Harbaugh, and whether consciously or not, they take it out by not calling penalties on opponents or on gray-area calls, defaulting in the opponent’s favor. I’m not sure I buy that either, but bias doesn’t require some mass conspiracy.

There have been a few bad

There have been a few bad blunders here and there but I chalk that mostly up to general incompetence and bad breaks Michigan’s way. The only systematic thing I see is the lack of holding calls, especially in games where holding is called the other way.

I’m not sure it is bias necessarily, but the fact that it’s a 2+ year trend (to this observable level on the line, I mean) makes me wonder what they need to do to get it called occasionally. I’d honestly love an official’s perspective because I’m open to the idea of me possibly missing something or being wrong.

Aside from the obvious “NCAA needs professional refs,” I wish it was more culturally acceptable in the NCAA (and NFL) for these guys to talk and be more public. Refs or some representative should do press conferences or interviews. If anything, it would humanize them to some extent. The Detroit Lions Podcast did an interview with ex-NFL Head of Officiating Dean Blandino (who I previously hated passionately) and it was pretty awesome to see him open up and go over what he saw and what he thought the refs saw on a handful of controversial plays. It was a reminder that these guys are human with limitations, not always out to get your team (even at the professional level). I’m not sure if there’s a “head of officiating” in the NCAA or Big Ten, but I think it would be awesome if they did some kind of weekly interview show or press conference where they explain what the hell happened. Without that, fans are just going to stew, dehumanize them and you get situations like NC State.

In all seriousness, what are

In all seriousness, what are the tiebreaker scenarios? I’m sure it’s buried in a post-game thread and sure I️ could look it up/figure it out, but is there a remotely plausible scenario where we win a tiebreaker?

Nobody said they were paid

Nobody said they were paid and Michigan didn’t lose so no idea what you are talking about. I️ agree it sounds whiny, but there’s a point to be made about the at best incompetence of the officiating in Michigan games lately. It’s terribly unlikely that every team plays their cleanest game of the season against Michigan, albeit possible or Michigan is just somehow set up to not draw penalties (due to lack of talent or playing style).

Again, that doesn’t mean OSU paid the refs or Delaney bought them a candy bar, just that there’s seemingly something going on where over the past couple of seasons, Michigan seems to be getting the raw end of officiating. Could sincerely just be bad luck, but still shouldn’t be ignored.

You should get banned because

You should get banned because you're an obvious troll.

None in the W/L column, but

None in the W/L column, but the refs didn't know that at the time in which they failed to make obvious calls. No reason to not hold them accountable in some way for being horrible just because PSU would have won either way.

Agreed. And Hurst. Multiple

Agreed. And Hurst. Multiple inverted veers Hurst got straight up tackled.

I don't think that has

I don't think that has anything to do with losing, and don't think the non-reversal was THAT egregious, but his arm was absolutely going forward and the officials made the wrong call. It was close, and clearly inconsequential but point being it wasn't a horrible challenge.

I don't blame the refs. Penn

I don't blame the refs. Penn State had a superior team and game plan. With that out of the way, how did PSU not commit a single penalty on offense or defense. That's nearly literally not possible unless they are the greatest team ever.

Size doesn't matter, unless

Size doesn't matter, unless it's a sample.

I wonder what Michigan's

I wonder what Michigan's record is in games where they are a 2-score underdog? Given the line fluctuates and there probably aren't many games exactly at the current spread, I wonder how they perform in games that are say 7.5-13.5... too lazy to look myself.

You can't just install triple

You can't just install triple option overnight. Considering the line has practiced a lot of zone blocking you could pepper in some zone read option, but unlikely they would be able to execute an advanced option playbook out of nowhere.

Eh I don't believe in moral

Eh I don't believe in moral victories but there is something materially different about a team that loses and a team that gets blown out. You do bring up a good point though because there's also something materially different about a team that narrowly beats bad opponents and a team that crushes them.

This defense is good enough

This defense is good enough to keep them in any game. The problem is that this offense is bad enough to let any opponent in any game. Point being, I don't see this team getting blown out by anyone, but wins against top 50 teams are going to be tough. I wouldn't be shocked though if they upset PSU, OSU or Wisconsin. Defense really is that good.

I don't even mean this to

I don't even mean this to even be a criticism of Franklin, but he's gaming all of the metrics after what happened last year, and I don't blame him (note, I don't think they should have made the playoff either way). He's not letting some numbers and perceptions keep them out of the playoff in the event of a loss, so they are going balls to the wall for four quarters and running up scores against bad teams. This really throws off measures like FPI.

Like I said, can't blame him after him and many others feel like they were kept out for this reason.

I'm shocked it's only five.

I'm shocked it's only five. In San Diego, where I assume there are far fewer alums and bars in general, there are two official alumni locations and two more unofficial Michigan bars (just that I know of). I imagine there's at least one more somewhere in the city.

I really doubt Don Brown goes

I really doubt Don Brown goes anywhere. He's 62. He's probably at Michigan as long as he coaches or at least as probably as long as Harbaugh is around.

Agreed it's awesome to watch though!

Great series for the Giants

Great series for the Giants there. They were going quick throw one after another, begging the Lions to press up and as soon as they did, the Giants hit them over the top on a PA pass. Not sure that's going to be a viable strategy throughout the game though.

Still feeling pretty good about this for the Lions.

I disagree, in that gambling

I disagree, in that gambling can be a fun pastime like any other thing that costs money if you do it responsibly, within your means, and without pretense that you'll come out better in the long run.

For instance, let's say I put $50 or some reasonable disposable amount money on a few games every Saturday or go to a casino once a week and drop it in a slot machine. If I get several hours of entertainment out of it and can afford $50/week, then I'd say it's fine, even if I lose that amount every week. It's no different than going golfing, to a bar, etc.

I personally don't gamble very often, but I don't think it's idiotic if it's someone's way of getting some entertainment. Just don't get carried away or do it with delusions that you'll make money. Granted, to your point, far too many people don't look at it that way and just burn money and end up regretting it, which is idiotic.

Seriously though, whoever

Seriously though, whoever that is, how do they justify keeping their vote? We all know the polls are a joke but this is blatant mockery. No sane and sincere person makes that vote.

I love how "Florida failed to

I love how "Florida failed to score an offensive touchdown" is a rationale. Granted, Florida likely has a bad offense by objective measures, but to pretend that they were bad all by themselves is stupid. It takes two to tango, or something like that.

I agree that there's better,

I agree that there's better, albeit probably more labor-intensive ways of doing this. Another thing to consider would be the average recruiting ranking of the teams. I assume teams with solid recruiting classes in previous years don't lose as much efficiency upon replacement.

Also, annoying how he snuck in the never-dying trope about Harbaugh wearing out his welcome. How does that keep getting brought up when there's virtually no evidence of it?

Yessss. I was on the fence

Yessss. I was on the fence about posting something yesterday asking about this. I don't frequent the board as much as I used to and was worried I would miss it. Glad I was able to get in. Thanks for setting up and looking forward to it!

Kind of a cop out answer but

Kind of a cop out answer but does it have to be one? I think back to good bosses / mentors I've had and there's been better or worse people for different phases of my life. I have a great mentor boss at the management stage of my career, but might not have been the best mentor when I was a student or a young professional in the field. Some people help get you there and some take you to the next level.

Not saying that's the case here, but could be a legitimate answer.

They're just THAT team this

They're just THAT team this year. They were a surprising stand out last year so everyone is on the bandwagon. Not saying it isn't deserved and there isn't reasoning behind it, this just seems to happen every offseason with a handful of teams. They were a big name team mostly overlooked the season before, exceeded expectations, and return a lot of players, so the analysts won't be fooled again and in turn over compensate.

It's going to be a tough game on the road for sure, but I think Penn State will continue to have a lot of holes that good teams will exploit. It's far from a lock win for them like some outside of the Michigan fan base are treating it.

Ding ding.

I am fairly

Ding ding.

I am fairly environmentally conscious, but if I am being honest with myself, I am not going to shell out 10s of thousands of extra dollars for that reason alone (leaving aside how much better electric truly is, per your point). It needs to make economic sense and/or provide some tangible benefit in order for me to make a serious eco-friendly investment.

With that in mind, I really want what a Tesla offers and the Model 3 makes that a possibility. They're incredible to drive, beautifully designed and reasonably priced, not to mention fuel savings, tax credits, etc. In a nutshell, I want one because they're cool and at a great price point. That's what will make them a serious automaker. The electric vs gas stuff is relatively moot if you live in a place with ample charging stations. Sure, some people will buy for perceived environmental reasons, but most just want a cool car that drives better than anything at that price point.

Nine seems like a pretty good

Nine seems like a pretty good bet for michigan. What's the return on that (meaning +/-100)?

I wouldn't stake a lot of money on 10+ wins, though I do believe they get there (just not enough to put substantial money on it), but it's hard for me to imagine them only winning 8 or fewer games with their schedule. Push or better seems like a favorable bet.

Econ Talk with Russ Roberts

Econ Talk with Russ Roberts is excellent. He's got a certain economic/political tilt, but often brings on guests with opposing views and is very fair in the discussion. Probably the podcast I look forward to the most every Monday.

Dan Carlin's Hardcore History and Common Sense podcasts are thought provoking. Also like Waking Up with Sam Harris. I often don't agree but another set of fair hosts.

On a lighter note, love the Monday Morning Podcast (Bill Burr). Drink Champs is amazing if you are a hip hop fan. I like others but those are the ones I pretty much always listen to.

I don't think either

I don't think either direction would be super surprising. I think they were in the 7-10 range in Vegas preseason World Series favorites. With a small number of teams making the playoffs, it wouldn't be surprising for them to go deep or narrowly miss out on a Wild Card. The only really surprising thing would be a well-below .500 finish.

Pitino and Izzo could have an

Pitino and Izzo could have an "excuse off." Not sure who would be favored.

There is no way in hell

There is no way in hell Peppers is still on the board after round 1. I'll eat my crow if that happens, but I feel like there's no way virtually every team passes on a talent like that.

The Pats still have a 1st round pick, right? No way they pass on someone that dynamic.

Noise

Serious question... are there relatively quiet motorcycles that aren't scooters? Like, powerful enough to take on the highway, but quiet enough to not ruin the day of everyone you pass? Say, no louder than your average 4-6 cylinder sedan.

I live in a dense neighborhood in San Diego. There arguably couldn't be a more idyllic area in the continental US to take a bike out on the open road, but living in a dense neighborhood, I don't want to disturb every neighbor and ruin everyone's outdoor lunch because I, one person, want to ride a bike. I'm assuming there are, but I somehow never see or hear them.

Exactly. I'm a Detroit native

Exactly. I'm a Detroit native and Lions fan living in San Diego. While I would never have become a "Chargers fan" the way I am with the Lions, I still like to get into my local sports teams as long as they're not rivals. I support the Padres and go to 10+ games per year, but with the Chargers, what was the point? Why invest in a team that has one foot out the door? Good riddance.

I get what you are saying,

I get what you are saying, but point spreads are collective predictions that manifest in a prediction market. The goal is to maximize house profits, sure, but the consequence is a collective prediction for the outcome of the game, especially when performed on the scale of a CFP game.
