BWW Bowl is 12/28 at 10:15 PM ET, I believe.
GLI title game is earlier that day, 7 PM scheduled start.
Wouldn't be a terrible doubleheader...

Did Nebraska blow it by not challenging the non-touchback call in the 3rd?
|3 weeks 5 days ago||Yost...||
Great footage of Yost in the glory days (which I generally define as 1996-2003). You can attribute the decline in intensity all you want to renovations and reconfiguration, but it's not just that. Yost is no longer a place where students come first and foremost to watch hockey. Now it's dancing and nonsense and costumes. There was some of that back then, but hockey was center stage. Not anymore.

Worse than any other venue is Yost. Smaller, intimate venue where the band dominates, but we've seen more piped in music at Yost the past two seasons with the new scoreboard and sound system. It doesn't happen often, but even once is one time too many. Best band at any M event. Should be them or bust.

Question unrelated to booing: were there a lot of empty seats yesterday? I know tickets were very cheap on secondary market and plentiful. Haven't seen the actual attendance issue discussed here so am assuming it was almost full but wanted confirmation.

Doesn't "save the season" but ends it on the best note possible. And plunges a lot of Buckeyes into a dark, deep abyss for the next 11 months. Nothing better.

If this team doesn't win the next 3 games and still plays on New Year's Day, it should be a wake up to anyone who doesn't recognize how terrible the bowl system is.

|4 weeks 6 days ago||As a student during the late||
As a student during the late 90s/early 00s, I can attest to the fact that there was no venue quite like Yost. As was detailed extensively and excellently in a post on this site a year or two ago, the NCAA regional in '02 involving St. Cloud and Denver was the most intense weekend I've ever been to at Yost or any other sporting venue. The building shook when Michigan took the lead over DU in the 3rd period on Saturday night.
What bothers me isn't necessarily the physical changes to the student section, the overhanging luxury seating, etc., it's the lack of effort from the students. The half-assed attempts to keep the CYA chant alive are a prime example. What's the point of the chant? For the other students around to hear it, or for the arena as a whole to hear it, or for the player going into the box to hear it? If it's anything but the first of those three alternatives, it would seem logical to play a cat-and-mouse game with the band, and wait until they play their "CYA defense" as instructed, and then go ahead with the chant. Not too difficult, it seems.
And while I completely understand the attempts by the Athletic Dept. to rid Yost of vulgarities, I don't get the other changes to the ambiance. The band conducter's dance was a huge crowd favorite at the end of a game we were undoubtedly going to win, and apparently that disappeared due to external pressure. I've heard anecdotally that it was seen as "showing up" opposing teams. Nonsense. Who knows if the current band/leader would even be open to such a thing, but it's just one more item that used to be special and has disappeared.
Other chants, as has been commented upon earlier, used to be more creative. I recall hearing, at least once to an opposing player and at least once to a diminutive official, the black-hole, funnel, etc. chant modified to something along the lines of dwarf-midget-you're just short, you're just short...What the student section appears to have morphed into is a prop comic, as opposed to a traditional stand-up comic who relies on wit and creativity.
I know I'll take heat for the last comment, but it's worth noting. More intensity from the students leads to more intensity from the alumni/non-student fan base, and, in theory, a more difficult place to play for opponents and a greater advantage for our Wolverines, which is all we really want.

Looked like a very questionable call on the penalty shot, but those breaks go for you and against you and seem to even out over the course of a season (or over the course of a two-week period, as you point out re: the UNH call against us).
I don't recall the Ryan Miller game, but the outshoot-your-opponents-by-a-3-to-1-margin-and-lose-by-a-goal routine was a hallmark of the Red Wings teams in the mid 90s until the early 2000s. There were years they didn't lose playoff games often, but it seems like whenever they did, they had outshot their opponents by a staggering margin and still managed to lose the game (in OT). If I recall correctly, that was the same day Michigan was edged out in OT in the Frozen Four by the Gophers. Not a good day for this hockey fan.

Couldn't agree more. 3:30 games are preferable when the weather is nice, early-season, but I'd take a noon conference home game every time if I had the choice. Not as much aversion to late games on the road.

Glad to see some coverage of the hockey team. Hopefully they can continue their strong play this weekend. Even though UMass-Lowell and BU are no longer top-10 teams, they're good opponents, and wins over both of those teams would be huge come tournament selection time, as I imagine both will be "teams under consideration." Hopefully the Yost crowd shows up this weekend; no football game to use as an excuse.

Surprised to see this, since I don't believe season ticket costs have increased over the past couple of seasons at Yost.
With the Tigers game on at 8, I'd be surprised if there weren't a bunch of empty seats tonight at Yost (perhaps no more than the usual 1/4 empty arena we see in October).
Is the Athletic Department using "dynamic pricing" for single-game hockey tickets too? I was under the impression that was limited to football.

Not sure if this has been posted already, but FYI:
Appears the game is available on ESPN GamePlan in the western part of the country, which suggests it will not be available on ABC stations in those areas. Sorry to those of you in the mountain and pacific time zones.

While I agree that having a national powerhouse join the GLI field is nice in theory, the timing of the tournament has resulted in depleted rosters from top national schools, including Michigan, for years. Every year, top players are invited to the World Junior Championships, leaving the GLI rosters looking like bare-bones versions of the team that takes the ice the rest of the year. So even though I agree with you that I'd like to see some big-name schools come into the area and participate in the tournament, what I'd really like is to see the tournament moved to a time period where the rosters won't be decimated by World Junior invites.

Not sure if this was mentioned or not, but Keith Jackson narrated part of the Tom Harmon video before the game this past Saturday.
|16 weeks 5 days ago||The last time student demand||
The last time student demand exceeded supply was the 97-98 season, I'm pretty sure. Even coming off the national title in '98, students buying for 1998-99 got full seasons. There haven't been split seasons anytime since then, even with the great teams in the 2000-02 time frame.
Yost should be preserved as the home of Michigan hockey at all costs. Its charm is easier to see with every change that is made to Crisler or Michigan Stadium that takes those venues into the future at the cost of ambiance and history. Yost has been transformed into a modern arena that feels like a throwback, which is what keeps some (albeit not all) of the fans coming back year after year.

Bring back Larry Henry! Back in the days when WWJ and WJR both had M football, Henry was the better play-by-play man, no question.

Maybe I'm the only one, but I'd like to see a healthy Todd Bertuzzi get ice time. He still has some of the best hands on the team, is tough, and is great on a line with Datsyuk or could be an asset when on a line with younger, inexperienced forwards. Injuries suck, but if he had been healthy, I find it hard to imagine him not playing every playoff game and contributing to the team.

Perhaps this is coming from a Red Wing' fan's perspective, but I'll throw it out there. To me, the Blackhawks are the Buckeyes of the NHL. Some extremely unlikeable individual players (Hossa, Kane, for starters), the worst fans around, and a pattern of getting way more than their share of breaks.

The University will miss Mary Sue and is better off having had her as its leader for the past decade. When I was a student, she was extremely accessible and responsive to my own personal comments/complaints and to those of my classmates. I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a student or alum who emailed her and didn't get a personal and prompt response. Glad to see she'll stay around Ann Arbor after retirement.

I found this moving and genuine. Which is exactly the opposite of what I feel when I watch the schtick at the United Center before a Blackhawks game. While the cheering of the anthem may have been genuine, spontaneous, heartfelt at the time of the Gulf War in the clip shown above, now it's just an excuse for fans not to respect or sing the national anthem and act like rowdy idiots. Fitting in a city that takes more pride in public drunkenness than any other.
