A bit of the soul of that arena died when they reportedly banned the hockey band leader from dancing. Dancer, sieve, dancer, sieve was a classic chant late in the 3rd period of a big win.

*Out of market games. If you're in the Red Wings' home territory, the games on ESPN+ should be blacked out. But great for watching anything out of your own home market.

Can anyone familiar with Houston chime in regarding best way to get from the stadium post-game to the Galleria area? In a hotel in that area and doesn’t look like the Metro rain system goes in that direction. Trying to avoid an Uber nightmare.

Including OSU on your list of "the best academic schools" instantly kills the list's credibility.

Respectfully disagree. I…

Respectfully disagree. I assume whatever contractual document binds the school to the conference and thus binds the university to the conference's rules is integrated; that is, it requires that amendments to those documents must be made in writing and constitutes the entirety of the parties' agreement. How the conference chose to apply those rules in the past shouldn't have significant bearing on likelihood of success on the merits if there's a rule or bylaw that gives the conference or its commissioner some sort of broad disciplinary power. A court will likely look to the four corners of the documents - and not beyond - in determining likelihood of success on the merits (which, of course, will require evidentiary proceedings to determine whether what the conference is doing is, in fact, a likely violation of said documents).

100% agree. Michigan has real traditions. To me, this is more similar to Wisconsin's 'tradition" of Jump Around than to any of Michigan's real, longstanding traditions.

Selling 4 tickets to the ECU…

Selling 4 tickets to the ECU and Purdue games as a package. Seats are in Section 1, Row 50 (4 seats together) - in my view, arguably the best seats you could ask for at Michigan Stadium, on the 50, middle of the bowl. Asking $400 per ticket for the 2 games combined; $1,600 all-in for both games. Not looking to split the seats and not looking to split the two games.

If interested, please email me at [email protected]. Thanks.

Rod's Diner on State Street…

Rod's Diner on State Street. Used to be run by Rod and his wife. They'd be open until 11 or 12 most nights and their frozen yogurt "colliders" were a treat. The place that's there now still makes colliders, but Rod is long gone, as are the photos on the wall.

Leopold's was a great spot…

Leopold's was a great spot. Long communal tables, every board game you could imagine, and great drinks. Thursday nights were flip-the-coin nights for a time, where your beer would be half off if you called heads or tails correctly. The Leopold Bros. actually make some very high end stuff out of their Colorado location but I don't think it's for sale in Michigan.

Why does everyone assume MSU…

Why does everyone assume MSU will be a night game? Isn't it driven by TV? If Fox has first pick and wants M/MSU that week at noon, it'll be a noon game.

"Dance with my Father" by Luther Vandross. Great track that never got the acclaim it deserved at the time it was released.

Andy Murray (formerly head coach in the NHL and also of WMU for 10 years) would seem to be a great Martelli-esque hire to support the new head coach. I know he left WMU a year or two ago. Anyone heard his name pop up in any rumors? Not sure he'd be interested in being an assistant, but his was the first name that came to my mind.

Should be lots of tickets…

Should be lots of tickets available for every game. I've heard (but haven't confirmed) that the ticket office is allowing people to skip purchasing tickets this season if they ask, in exchange for a nominal fee to hold the seats until next year. Anecdotally, there seem to be a lot of people exercising that option (older people, those with kids who aren't vaccinated yet, those who just aren't ready for 100K crowd, etc.).

1999 NHL Playoffs, second round. Wings are the back-to-back defending champions and are up against their rivals from Colorado.

Having won games 1 and 2 of the series on the road, Detroit comes home to The Joe for game 3. Wings took the early lead 1-0, and then had a chance to put a stranglehold on the Avs when Yzerman hit the crossbar in the first period. Would've given Detroit a 2-0 lead.

Avs stormed back, won the game 5-3, and never looked back, winning the series in 6 games and ending the Wings' chances at a three-peat.

Great article. Should the softball reference be 2005, not 2015? The 2005 team won the program's first national championship (and became the first team from east of the Mississippi River to win a national title).

Pretty tough to find much on…

Pretty tough to find much on the controversy that surrounded Cherry in 2003, but in late March of that year, he took Montreal fans to tsk for booing the US national anthem in the midst of the Iraq War. If memory serves me, Cherry's point was that Canadians booing the US anthem should be ashamed, because the US has fought for freedom and supported Canadian causes when necessary, and Canada was sitting on the sideline letting the US go it alone in Iraq. I recall he was suspended and the CBC scrubbed all video from that incident on the internet. Cherry took a lot of abuse in Canada but was widely praised in the US. He was wrong with his most recent comments, and much of his commentary was offensive, but his take on the booing of the US national anthem in 2003 was, in my opinion, spot on. As was his take throughout the years on Claude Lemieux, who Cherry nicknamed "Claude the Fraud."

Also worth noting that if you watch the CBC broadcast of the Wings' Cup-clinching game in 1997, the first thing out of the mouths of many of the players, coaches, and executives interviewed was about Cherry, who was missing the Stanley Cup Final due to his wife's recent passing. Showed just how well-liked he was, at least by members of that year's Red Wings team.

I wasn't suggesting that…

I wasn't suggesting that ESPN or ABC would pass on the game; I assume it'll be on ABC. I was just suggesting that with potentially stiff competition on Fox that night with the World Series that ABC/ESPN may choose to show the game during the day, either at 12 or 3:30 PM. A lot of that also depends on how the teams fare. A 1-loss ND team against a 2-loss Michigan team is a lot different than both teams being ranked in the top 10 and undefeated.

It'll be either a 12-day or…

It'll be either a 12-day or 6-day selection, but I doubt M vs. ND will be in prime time. Fox has game 4 of the World Series that night. Not sure ESPN or ABC would want to potentially lose a ton of viewers if the World Series happens to feature, say, the American League's team from New York against the National League's team from Los Angeles.

The pregame routine of the…

The pregame routine of the band clearing off the field before the team came out of the tunnel ended after September 11, 2001.

After 9/11, it became standard for the teams to be on the field during the anthem. Hasn't gone back to the "old" way since, at least not that I can recall.

Just wondering if there's…

Just wondering if there's any chance Michigan could host a Super Regional if they advance out of the Regional?

I've looked at the bracket and it appears a lot of higher-ranked seeds are through, so I'm assuming not. But hoping someone more knowledgeable than me can opine.

The Best M Sporting Event...

...I've ever seen live wasn't a football game. Despite having been to the '97 OSU game, '98 Rose Bowl, '04 MSU, all night games, and pretty much every other big game played since the late 80's, the best M sporting event I've ever seen live was the 2002 NCAA Hockey Regional Final at Yost against Denver. Come-from-behind victory had the building shaking. Never seen an atmosphere like that at any game, any sport, pro or college.

Phone

All this reminiscing about the "Old Yost" has me lamenting one of the biggest mistakes made in recent years. While not nearly as egregious as the goal horn, barrage of commercials, and occasional piped-in music, the removal of the old-timey phone from the press area was a huge loss.

When that phone rang, everoyne in the building could hear it, and responded with, "Hey [Oppsing Goalie], it's your mom. She says, YOU SUCK!"

Great memories of Yost from 98 to 02 as a student. Perhaps it's nostalgia, but seems like a whole different venue today than it was in those days.

I believe it was last year

I believe it was last year that they had the regular camera angle without announcers on ESPN Classic. Unfortunately, the lack of HD dooms this option. If they had it in HD, it would be great: normal camera views with crowd noise, band, and PA announcer, no play by play or commentators.

Softball Game 3 (if necessary) - ESPNU

Minor point of clarification.

Per MGoBlue.com site, game 3 of the Super Regional (if necessary) will air on ESPNU, not ESPN.

For my money as a fan, I'd

For my money as a fan, I'd rather play series against the teams from Alaska than from Arizona. Has more of an appeal to me as a hockey fan, but maybe that's just my personal preference. On the other hand, travel costs to Anchorage or Fairbanks likely dwarf what it costs to send a hockey team to Phoenix for the weekend.

Fab 5 Apologies if this has been addressed already, but looked like a quick cameo in the video of the Fab 5 from a photo shoot when they were student-athletes. Would this be the first time the university has used their images in a promotional capacity since the self-imposed sanctions took effect years ago?
Honor if you're coming from Honor if you're coming from the U.S. "Honour" if you're coming from Canada.
2000 Ice Breaker

I remember that tournament well.  North Dakota was, if I recall correctly, ranked #1 and Michigan was ranked #2. Everyone thought they would face off in the tournament final on Saturday, but both lost on Friday in shootouts.  Colgate and New Hampshire, I think, ended up in the final.  Was a highly anticipated season-opening weekend that turned into a semi-dud.

So does that mean the only

So does that mean the only outdoor track for student use is the crumbling concrete one at Palmer Field?  I know I and many other students used that Ferry Field track regularly when not in use by one of the Track and Field teams and unless I'm mistaken, it was the only "soft" track surface on or around central campus.

30 for 30: Judgment Day

Would be interesting, IMHO, to see a 30 for 30 type series about the famous "Judgment Day" in November 1997 when M demolished Penn State, Nebraska barely beat Missouri on the questionably kicked ball play, and (I think) FSU beat UNC in the  undercard.

Could start on that day, follow the teams through the Bowl season, and then delve into Heisman sour grapes at Tennessee that led to Fullmer's voting Michigan 4th in the final coaches poll, giving Nebraska a share of the title.

Perhaps they'll just put the

Perhaps they'll just put the student section in a sound-proof enclosure.  That's the path they've been heading down since the mid '00s.

First game as an alum.  Being

First game as an alum.  Being in the stadium, looking at the student section from afar, and experiencing the entire thing without my group of friends.  There were tears when the band played The Victors.

1.  Michigan beating OSU in

1.  Michigan beating OSU in 2003 in Ann Arbor to send the Wolverines to the Rose Bowl.  Felt like an eternity since we had been to the Rose Bowl (even though it had only been 6 years...little did we know what was coming in the next decade).

2.  The first home game post-9/11 was emotional.  The American flags replacing the Big Ten school flags around the Stadium, the teams being on the field for the anthem, the patriotic-themed halftime show...and the security and feeling of vulnerability. All new at that time.

Cancellation is an option I called the ticket office (734-764-0247) this morning and asked if, in light of the recent developments, they would accept cancellations of already-purchased season tickets for hockey. They said they would but that it needs to be in writing (email to [email protected]). FYI.
Has anyone called and asked

Has anyone called and asked for a refund/to cancel their season ticket renewal? Contemplating doing that but curious to know if anyone has tried.

I hate to do this, but the

I hate to do this, but the email the Athletic Dept. sent around isn't necessarily wrong.  All they said was that the price was lower this year, not the per-game price:

"Season ticket prices for the 2014-15 season have been lowered; this coming season, endzone locations have dropped by 15% ($400 vs. $340), sideline/mid-endzone by 12% ($450 vs. $395), and center ice by 10% ($525 vs. $475)."

That being said, the whole situation shouldn't surprise anyone, because it's the same thing happening across the board: take advantage of the most loyal fans and screw them any way the Athletic Department can.  The experience of going to games at Yost has gone dramatically downhill in the past copule of years (as someone posted above, the goal horn is a minor tweak that would make a major improvement).

It has been common practice for at least a decade to schedule high-profile games in both basketball and hockey over student breaks, not include those games in student packages, and then sell those discounted student tickets at full price to the public, so I'm not surprised there are a bunch of games over student break.  Seems unavoidable to some extent that some of those games would fall over break, until you consider the fact that they take almost two months off between home games, for the second season in a row.

At some point the loyal fans need to put their money where their mouths are and stop buying the tickets.  I renewed this year but after being dicked around, I'm not renewing next year.  That's the only way things are going to change.

The question is not limited

The question is not limited to football ("Of the Michigan games you've attended, which one is your favorite, and what makes it stand out so much?"), so I won't confine my answer to football.

The best Michigan sporting event I've ever been to is a no-brainer: 2002 Regionals at Yost.  Michigan beating St. Cloud on Friday (the legendary Molly game) and the win over Denver on Saturday to send Michigan to the Frozen Four are two of the better games you'll see anywhere in any sport.  Saturday's win over Denver had the building shaking and louder than I've ever heard Yost or any other Michigan venue.  Hard to imagine that will ever be matched at a home game, since the regionals appear unlikely to return to Yost anytime soon (and the student section is a shadow of its former self).

Strikeout there is killer. Strikeout there is killer. Wow that hurts.
HOW DO YOU ONLY ADVANCE TO HOW DO YOU ONLY ADVANCE TO SECOND BASE THERE? awful base running. FUNDAMENTALS.

I don't get the bunt with 2 I don't get the bunt with 2 strikes. Come on. Swing away at that point.
