The clinical trial evidence…

The clinical trial evidence really only supports using oseltamivir (Tamiflu) within the first 48 hours of symptoms, otherwise it may just be a placebo effect because you would get better anyway.

speaking as a doctor, and as…

speaking as a doctor, and as a thankful patient who has also had a similar tumor resected, it is reassuring that the pathology is benign.  Often, this tumor can be removed without any recurrence (which is our hope).  The bigger issue is the location of the tumor and any surrounding structures that may make a resection more difficult or higher risk.  While surgical techniques have improved drastically and risk is low, there is always a risk of severe complications from the surgery when you're operating near such delicate structures.

As an oncologist, just…

As an oncologist, just wanted to help put things in context.  Pancreatic cancer (usually adenocarcinoma) is usually detected after it has spread, which is what makes it incurable.  Surgical resection is the only chance at cure.  Even then, pancreatic cancer often comes back, despite after-surgery chemo to reduce that risk.  For the most part, once solid tumors (e.g. NOT blood cancers) spread, patients can get treatments to control the disease, and hopefully prolong their lives.  A small percentage (in the single digits) can have prolonged control of the disease for years.  Hope Alex is one of those people!  Thoughts and prayers for him and all suffering from this terrible disease.

harmful misinformation

I logged in for the first time in awhile to downvote this. This is a very, very dangerous comment that will fuel this false narrative, may keep people from becoming donors, which will cost lives of people on transplant lists.

As a physician, part of my training involved spending time in ICUs and ERs; this absolutely DOES NOT come into play, and most of the time we only find out a patient is an organ donor after the decision is made to withdraw care.  Organs cannot survive long without blood flow, so many of the organs come from people who are brain dead, but are on a mechanical ventilator so the heart can continue to circulate blood through a dead body.  Then, surgeons must be mobilized to procure organs after a match is identified, etc.  It is logistically not possible for an emergency physician to determine a patient is an organ donor, allow the patient to die, procure the organs before they are nonfunctional, identify a transplant recipient, etc.  And yes, I am a registered organ donor.

Former MMB member here.  If my memory serves me correctly, former director Prof. Jamie L. Nix wrote this on a plane soon after he was named as director of the MMB.  I think he told us he wrote it because when he was a grad student here in the '90s, all they had was "Let's Go Blue" and they needed some more tunes.

Reminds me of this play I'm no football coach, so I'm not sure about the exact schematics, but this reminds me of this fake bubble vs. UConn in 2010 under RR's offense. Sorry for the lack of an embed as well... http://youtu.be/6kbwQAIR10E?t=6m38s

I'd agree if we were tight on

I'd agree if we were tight on cash.  Sure it's not imperative, but the whole point of having a $100million + budget and multi-million dollar surpluses year after year is so that we can afford luxuries that other schools can't - like providing the live soundtrack to our football team.

In my dream:

Al Borges has

In my dream:

Al Borges has an epiphany.  He works in an uptempo spread offense (Chip Kelly style) that Bama has no film of.

We hang 56 on them, while Bama's inexperienced 5* recruits (because all their juniors left early to the League) have first big game jitters.

Oh, and there were bubble screens.

Even if he kept Mallet, he

Even if he kept Mallet, he would've had 2 returning starters on offense instead of 1.  While Mallet is a big time athlete, we saw in 2007 how raw is talent was even with a tremendous support cast.

People forget that regardless of any attrition that could be put on RR (which, I doubt he had control over mostly), the 2008 team he inherited still lost the leading passer in school history (Henne), the leading rusher in school history (Hart), and the #1 overall pick in the NFL draft (Long) to graduation.  That will make a dent regardless.

Yeah, I hope it's not Ole

Yeah, I hope it's not Ole Miss, because that would put him in the division of death (Bama, Auburn, LSU)

I really wish he could get a

I really wish he could get a job like the Arizona job.

1) BCS conference

2) zero expectations, so he could build from the ground up

3) USC is the only "good" team in his division.

Either way, I wish him the best and will be rooting for him to get a fair shot and be successful.

I respect your point, and it

I respect your point, and it is a tough balance.  It's a little difficult because we have so many returning starters.

And it's not so much the "spread vs. no spread" as it is the play calling out of the pro-style.  I don't mind when Borges calls those roll-out throwback screens out of the I-form (i.e. Vincent Smith vs. Notre Dame) as much as when he calls these jumpball bombs to Jeremy Gallon.

When Coach Rod had Steven Threet and Nick Sheridan, he tailored his "spread" to their skills.  Notice he didn't call zone reads because there's no way the DE is biting on their running ability.  Perhaps Borges just needs to call plays, regardless of "pro-style" or "spread," that play to the strengths of his current players.

Dude, I support Coach Hoke

Dude, I support Coach Hoke 100%, and I hope this doesn't happen, but it isn't inconceivable that we could lose these last few games.  If that happens, we would finish with the same record as last year, despite having a much improved defense.  That would be very disappointing, because it would suggest that an offensive system that produced 6000+ yards last year, returning 9 starters (minus Stonum and Schilling) is massively underachieving.

I hope that doesn't happen, and I don't think it will, but it's certainly not unbelievable.

Go Blue!

Gosh, I know I'm just

Gosh, I know I'm just rehashing what a lot of us feels, but I need to say these three things:

1) Coach Hoke gets my support because every coach should get a chance to install their philosophy, with their recruits, which takes at least four years.

That being said...

2) While Coach Rod may not know the defensive side of the ball very well, his offensive schemes worked

3) Al Borges, I beg you to please suck it up and throw in more zone reads and BUBBLE SCREENS.

I agree.  People make

I agree.  People make mistakes, and when they admit them it's a lot more easy to forgive them.  A lot of other coaches would defend their decisions to the grave.

If we run enough read option, eventually the DB on the slot receiver comes to stop the run. Then Denard can throw the ball to an open slot receiver after pulling the handoff back.

We will really be in the

We will really be in the drivers seat if we beat MSU, because they have the "privilege" of playing Wisconsin.  If they lose that too, then they'll have two B1G losses and we'd have to lose three to finish behind them because of the tiebreak that we would hold in that situation.

Then again, his "gorgeousness" is directly correlated with how many zone reads he calls, in my mind.

Good work!  I love the clips of that '06 game.  I was in the MMB back then, and it was great seeing that #2 ND team get dismantled right in front of their fans.

Two factors

1) He won't put

Two factors

1) He won't put up as big of numbers as last season because hopefully we'll have RB's that can produce effectively and will get more carries.  Even RR wanted a situation where we didn't have to rely on QB sweeps all day, but we just didn't have a RB that could be effective last year.

2) There were only 5 (I believe?) complete offensive drives, not counting the one that was in progress when the game was cancelled.  On three of those drives, we got touchdowns.  The ball control of both teams ran a lot of the clock out; this means fewer possessions and opportunities for Denard's stat line.
