I already fought like hell about this in "Fixing the way the B1G..." diary. This notion needs to stop. The only team that is the Third Best Team in the B1G is MICHIGAN. Penn State and Michigan State both deserved to win. Both beat Ohio State. Both beat competent B1G West Teams in the Championship.
[EDIT]: Also, I don't get how you miss the hypocrisy in your OP. You are blaming PSUs winning of the conference as taking the luster off the B1G Championship. Something we strive to win every single year. But you cannot just accept that 2 losses in the last 3 weeks should take the luster off our Great Season, and the conceived notion that we are definitively better than PSU. You ever take a second to yourself and reflect that Great Teams don't lose to Iowa and choke away games against Ohio State. See: Penn State, 2016. Our defense was AWESOME. Our offense was a shell of itself once the temperature dropped.

Seems like the most convenient time for him and Michigan to parts ways would have been last week or whenever that was.
The OL both look better than their rankings. Paea is a local kid and really our only DT in the class. Even if we got all of our other targets at DT, he'd still have room just because we need the numbers. Paye seems like a Don Brown guy (BC decommit) and still need DL no matter what actual position.

I also want to say, I am not gung-ho about PSU. I actually dislike PSU very much. They don't belong in our conference anymore. And even before the scandal, they were propped up like Notre Dame. A team who took advantage of being an independent to gain a reputation, and hasn't been nationally relevant since the 80s.
What I won't take is the slander being spewed about that PSU is definitively the third best team in the division. In no case is this a topic if we win the B1G, no matter how we got there. The fact of the matter is, in 2016, when the conference is the strongest it's been in at least 10 years, Penn State was able to walk away with the championship. If that doesn't mean something, then why are we playing games? Why would we strive for B1G Championships?
Plain and simply, Penn State was the best team in the conference. They proved it.

Michigan gives up 10 offensive points to Wisconsin = AMAIZING DEFENSE BEST EVARR
Champion-level teams do win championships though. Something we haven't done since 2004? TWELVE YEARS. Penn State has won three in the that time frame.
September somewhat matters, but you can't win championships in September. November is when it counts. 2-2 in November for Michigan. 5-0 in November/December for PSU. Penn State handled their business. While we didn't. That's more deserving. Full Stop.
You want to base the whole Michigan vs. Penn State argument off of a game played a 2-1/2 months ago. Both teams are different now. Michigan's offense is nowhere near as efficient. PSU is one of the hottest teams in the country. There is such thing as improvement. And it seems Michigan peaked early an plateaued. Maybe we still are the better team (The CFP Commitee disagrees), but we blew our chance to prove it.

|3 days 23 hours ago||All that being said, the best||
All that being said, the best thing I read was on yahoo this morning. Get rid of the conference Championship games all together. Go to an 8 team playoff. Let the extra playoff game replace the conference championship games. Conference Champions are named like they used to be. Best Record, then Best Conference Record, then H2H, then more obsure tie breakers. The 5 Conference Champions go to the playoff. Any team close enough to lose the championship in an obscure tie breaker fashion goes to the playoff as an at-large anyways.
This year Ohio State, Alabama, Washington, Oklahoma, and Clemson would have all been named Conference Champions. Then Michigan would get the bid over Penn State and Wisconsin (same record, H2H wins). Colorado gets in. An undefeated Group of 5 can get in at the 8 seed in a year where there is one. So Western is in! Or hell, 4 out of the top 8 are B1G, let em go at each other. They earned it this year.
1st round games are played at Home for 1-8, 2-7, 3-6. The 4-5 game is on a neutral site. You guarantee all conferences get a shot. And enough spots for anyone else who would have a say in things. The fight over the 7/8/9 rankings might be more crowded, but less meaningful. You're fighting to go play Alabama, AT ALABAMA. And the best thing, you don't add another game for most of these teams.

People need to open their eyes. Penn State has been opening a can on people just like Michigan did early on. If the Michigan/OSU game goes the other way (1 play game we got jipped out of), who is the second best team in the division? Penn State who has 1 B1G loss and a H2H win over Ohio State? Or OSU with 2? I'd be inclined to say Penn State.
Michigan loses that Ohio State game and now Penn State doesn't deserve their B1G Championship, and are the third best team in the division by some distance.
Penn State deserves to have won the B1G Championship. Ohio State deserves to be in the playoffs. All is right with the world.

The Western Michigan argument is ridiculous. So you made zero valid points in the rambling above. It has everything to do with record. Then perception, head to head, eye test, strength of schedule. Group of 5 conferences do not belong in the playoff conversation, so throw them away.
Alabama is the best. Record-wise.
Ohio State, Clemson and Washington are the next best 3. Record-wise. Then they were ordered in terms of 1. Strength of Schedule 2. Head to Head matchups. 3. Common opponents. Clemson AND Washington should jump the Buckeyes after winning Conference Championships. Afterall, 12-1 is better than 11-1.
Next group is the 10-2 teams. Michigan, PSU, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State. Ordered by 1. Strength of Schedule 2. Head to Head matchups. 3. Common opponents. Michigan only sits at the front of the group because they own the tie breakers over PSU and Wisconsin right now. After today WILL be a different story. The B1G winner AND the Big 12 winner should jump the Wolverines after winning the Conference Championships (11-2 > 10-2). MAYBE The Big 12 is down enough they don't, but I would not be shocked. Oklahoma is one of the hottest teams in the country. Oklahoma State lost on an that extra play to CMU.
You have to remember that it is not the top four teams than a huge gap to 5 and everyone else. And at the end of the day, wins still mean everything in college football. Just look at the Rankings.

Have to wonder if burning the shirts is the way to go. It is especially telling that Harbaugh doesn't apply RS status to anyone on the roster until they "earn" their 5th year.
Redshirting is great when you have Seniors at every position. But look at how Alabama operates. Ohio State operates. You need those classes to turn over quicker some times in order to get the new recruits in. It may lead to some growing pains (Gedeon only gets 1 year), but in the long term it could pay off. (Gedeon gets 2 years and Brian is happier if Bolden is only here for 4).
Then say you have a guy in over his head. Or a recruit who never panned out. After 2 years with no redshirt, they are looking at the time remaining and the depth chart ahead and make the choice to move on (or plan a transfer, take a RS, get a degree, and have 2 years left). Instead that person could be a RS Freshman, think they have 3 years left to make an impact. Not in a hurry. 1 less slot in the class. You have 85 scholarships. What is better, forcing 5 classes into that 85? Or 4 classes?

See Ohio St. vs. Penn St.

Ohio State jumped Baylor & TCU in the first CFP due to a Conference Championship Game. So the only precedence we have is that Conference Championships do matter. I could see Colorado, the B1G winner and even the Big 12 winner all jumping ahead of Michigan next weekend based on that precedence alone.
Are they leaving Michigan at 5 for this week for intrigue? Are they actually going to put Michigan in if just one of Washington or Clemson lose due to possible TV ratings of a Michigan vs. Alabama semifinal?

Our fan base is delusional if they think the commitee will look at our wins from 2 months ago as better than a Conference Championship victory.

I mean, we had a middling schedule, on the light side for a P5 team for sure. Colorado, PSU, Wisconsin are all better than we thought. MSU is wayyy down. Iowa is mediocre. I mean, I was expecting that, but the national perception was that would be a tough one.
The problem is our three best wins so far were all at home. 3 of our 4 road games were, should be cake walks. SOS will top out as average. I don't think it will hurt us. But it certainly won't help.
The thing is, that it just doesn't matter at all. We lose to the Buckeyes and we are out (unless OSU racks up another L). Two teams from the same conference will make the 4 team CoFoPoff when pigs fly. And even if the porkers get airborne, you know it will be 2 SEC teams. So control your destiny, go undefeated, and SOS could be dead last for all I care.
|6 weeks 2 days ago||I'll take the negbang I guess.||
I, too, think Peppers for Heisman is a little overblown. He is amazing. His role on the defense is crucial to it's success. But the lack of numbers (INT, FR, FF, Sacks) kill him. His TFL is up there with the best in the conference, which is good. It hurts him that 1 punt return TD was wrongfully taken away. His offensive numbers were hurt by the Illinois game imo.
But, have huge games against MSU, OSU and hopefully a B1GCG, while piling up stats in all the games steadily, and maybe. We will know a Heisman moment when we see it. Until then he might be a top 10 guy. But not a real candidate.

It's the same front office/coach that sat him last season, played him 5 mins a game when he was in, won't give Mantha a shot, let Frk and Pulky walk out the door for nothing all because we need to waste a line and a half on Veteran Leadership, and Penalty Killing Poorly, and Adding Nothing In Terms Of Goals.
The question isn't "what did you miss," it's should be "why did you ever expect anything different.

This was a bad satirical piece. First, you don't write "(Satire)" in the title. 2nd, it has to be somewhat believable, or stick to real life in one way or another. Delany admitting a mistake would never ever happen. Just poorly executed imo.

Agreed. Really thought our running game was working well. Thought if we went a little more on the ground we could have won this game in blowout fashion. I mean, those missed FG's turn into touchdowns, Wisconsin is throwing even more and we get more turnovers. I thought it was weird to abandon the run, and abandon the Jabrill when we entered the redzone.

|10 weeks 2 days ago||What is that MSU comment||
What is that MSU comment based on? Because from what we have seen, a struggle against Furman, a win against a Notre Dame team that is bad and fired it's defensive staff, and a loss against Wisconsin shows us they aren't all that good.
LSU is even worse. They just fired LES MILES! Whose worst season ever at LU was an 8-4 one. Take the Wisconsin game out and they had 1 okay showing, 1 squeaked out win over a SEC bottom feeder, and 1 loss to an Auburn team that is about to get it's own coach fired.
Wisconsin outside of those games had 1 good win and 1 bad win. Tell me again how any of these teams are good.
|10 weeks 2 days ago||Nope||
Wisconsin so far, beat a team that already fired it's coach. Beat Akron and probably the spread. So that's good. Barely beat a Georgia State team. And beat a team that scraped by Furman, and hung onto a win over a team that lost to Duke and Texas.
They are not world beaters. They are Northwestern last year. BYU last year.
What I am saying is we will shut them and their Freshman QB out.

I'm with ya man! The pre-fourth down tradition is playing "Temptation" which is cool, unique, and very Michigan. Singing along "You Suck" is lazy. Adding "Bitch" at the end is frat boyish.
That being sad, as a drunk GVSU student standing in the UofM student section, uneducated in Michigan traditions, I totally screamed You Suck at the top of my lungs. It was harmless fun.

Rationality meters get turned off. At the game was a different experience. At least in my section. Once we were down 21 to 7, people were more confused than angry. There was so much time left, and everyone just knew we would tie it up at some point. To go into halftime with a lead was unexpected. The bomb Colorado got was shocking. But everyone knew that was just a great, gutsy play from their QB. We also knew it was over for him. He got lit up one last time on that one. The whole 2nd half was smooth sailing.
|11 weeks 5 days ago||I don't get it either. As an||
I don't get it either. As an offensive player, isn't ball security just drilled into your soul? Why would you want to drop a ball? That should seem like an odd concept.
|11 weeks 5 days ago||It's a product of who we were||
It's a product of who we were playing. Colorado is a spread to run team, and instead of keeping a safety back and letting us get gashed like Indiana or OSU did last season, we challenged them to beat us over the top. They did 3 times. It was also the only way to move the ball after the slants were adjusted out of the game.
So they went back to the well as much as possible. So much so that their QB got knocked out of the game due to the cosntant need to long developing routes to get behind our safeties.
Our defense is just fine. I'm sure we will see it grade out pretty well in the UFR. Each one of them got beat once. I know Peppers did enough the rest of the game to soar back above zero. I'm sure Hill and Thomas are right in the zero range. The corners were great on fade routes. LBs were all over the place. Gary/Wormley/Glasgow/Hurst were in the QB's grill all day. And the run game was non-existent.
|11 weeks 5 days ago||We scored 45 on the number||
We scored 45 on the number one ranked defense in the country, statistically. We held a team that scored over 100 in it's first two games to 21 points on offense. I mean you look at these two teams, both played a weak schedule, both had similar STATS. We crushed them. This team is amaze balls.

Has a starting QB finished a game vs. our defense yet? I don't wish ill will on anyone, and really hope their guy is okay, but that is something other teams need to prepare for. You're going to lose a quarterback against us trying to keep a game you're going to lose anyways close. Or you can go max protect and get shut out.
The QB was never going to last a full game against us playing at the level they did. It's hard to find a QB in the country that would.
|11 weeks 5 days ago||Let's go over this again.||
Let's go over this again. Colorado scored 21 points in the first quarter (14 on offense). The starting QB played a 2nd quarter and 1-2 drives in the 3rd. They scored 7 points in that time. We won by 17.
After the first quarter, their offense was not at all the same.

NCAA site says ND won via the AP Poll.
And via your wikipedia link:
The problem is you want to look at a special AP poll from that year. When everyone wants to look at THE AP Poll from that year. I have no problem claiming a National Championship that year. Were named National Champs by 12 polls. ND was only 2. But call it what is was. A split national title with the AP Poll going to ND. That's how the polls named champions back then. Before bowls. So you can't change the criteria now.
From Wiki again:

ND was the AP champion in 1947
I guess the question is what is the modern era though? Was it 1932 when they added hashmarks? 1934 when the shape of the football changed. 1936 with the AP Poll. Post WWII (1946). Or 1958 when the NFL game took off, surpassing the college game in popularity?
Who cares though. They have selected National Championships since 1869. And Michigan has 11 of them.

1 thru 3 are just classics. Northwesterns uniforms are the best thing under armor has ever done imo.
Nebraska is another classic, ranks much higher than Wisconsin due to "Skinny N" and they made the look cooler first.
Minority here, love what they do to incorporate the state flag. Or cool turtle helmets. Or just their overall Oregoness in a conference known to be smug about not being Oregon.
7 thru 10 are all clean, decent color schemes. Indiana flair is better than when Minnesota tries, and Wisconsin is unoriginal. Penn State doesn't even try to stand out or be anything other than 2000 generic ncaa create a team base uniform.
Rutgers is Maryland in a bad way. Purdue leaves a bad taste in your mouth no matter how good you think the uniforms look. BLACK + GOLD = LOSSES.
Michigan State is so plain and boring. Usually matches grass. And the saying isn't, I'd rather watch grass play football. When they do try and spruce things up, they add ornament helmets, or try to play into Zack Snyders 300 Spartans. A gold color that no way matches the gold found in their own history, but definitely matches this color pallate:
How original, you copied a movie every bit as sparty-bro as you are. YES! YES! YES! we understand your profession. It's looking bad in your uniforms and working at old McDonalds farm! Or just plain old McDonalds. My god this just does not look good.
And then Illinois. I know you people are here reading MGoBlog because you have nothing better to do than stalk you're made up Rival. You know we forget you're in this conference right? Let me just say, this is the best you'll ever look in a uniform, and the worst thing Rutgers could do would still top it.

Legends Jerseys still were a good idea imo. Outside of Tom Harmon's 98, which shouldn't be in rotation, the idea of legends jerseys were cool imo. Just don't give them to players with established numbers! If someone wanted to come in an wear number 11, okay cool. Do it. You have a lot to live up to kid. Don't screw up. And in 2 years or so when the kid got on the field, you could pan to the number, nameplate, and teach a new generation about the Wisert Brothers.
TBD, I never heard of the Wistert brothers before the legends patches. I never knew 11, 47, 48, 87, and 98 were retired. I just figured no one wore 98 out of respect and never noticed the rest. I knew Ford played here, but not what he meant to the team, I new of Kramer and Oosterbaan, but not of how transcendant they were.
The legends jerseys were a great idea executed in the worst way possible imo.
That's why Courtney Avery is one of only 2 players to wear number 11 since it was originally retired.
