Karl Pilkington! What a treasure. The Gervais/Merchant/Pilkington podcasts have accompanied me for countless hours of road trips over the last 5+ years!

Dentist or pharmacist. Good hours, can work anywhere, can have your own practice, and pretty high pay without the rigors of being a full M.D. That said, I'm pretty happy being an engineer.

I think you'll respect it when it walks away from an F50 to 60 mph!

Yep. I noticed you picked the CTS V Wagon below. Solid choice. Wagons have at least as much utility as a large-size SUV, but in the case of the wagons we picked, are faster than just about anything short of a supercar in a straight line. And not much slower on a track.
Also, the Mercedes AMG Wagon has 4Matic all wheel drive. It's truly the most impressive all-around vehicle I can imagine!

Merc E-Class Wagon AMG. Surprised to not see any BMW M cars on here, considering their excellent balance of space, utility, performance, and rarity. If I didn't see any need to haul around a family, then it would be a 911 Carrera S. The E-wagon has more than enough utility, tons of luxury, and so, so much power.

I enjoy Dick Vitale as an announcer, and Duke as a basketball program.
Attending football games is such a pain in the neck. Takes all day, weather is usually bad, expensive, prevents me from watching other games, etc etc. I enjoy attending basketball games much more.
I admire the Nebraska football program pre-Mike-Riley. Doesn't bother me at all that they split our 1997 Championship. Not their fault.
It annoys me when people complain about the high number of bowls. Um, so don't watch. It's college football, our favorite sport! Why would anyone complain about there being more of it? Do these people complain about getting frequent paychecks because going to the bank takes 10 minutes of your time? If you like CFB, then don't complain about having the opportunity to watch more of it, especially during the holidays when we're at home with nothing else to do!

Writing that it's a bad idea is fine (and correct). Threatening to destroy his future is different.

We know that we don't have an athletic director with one lick of experience in an athletic department. That is the issue. There are many options with experience and instead, if you believe the tweets, we landed on a retiree with no direct experience. That's what we know, and it's frustrating when considering Michigan's resources and options.

I believe that in this thread we're discussing the implications of what Bruce Feldman and others have said is true - that Hackett is the permanent AD. I don't care if the search takes a long time and he's interim for awhile. But to just hand over the reins to him because he's already settled in the office and Schlissel doesn't want to deal with athletics is what bothers me (also a hypothetical, granted).

You know who might be even more different than Dave Brandon? An actual Athletic Director with experience being a successful Athletic Director! Of which there are many with Michigan ties! Why should we be in the position of 'hoping for the best' when we can just HIRE the exact description of what want???
|26 weeks 16 hours ago||There's also no evidence to||
There's also no evidence to say that this is a GOOD thing. Just the virtue of not being Dave Brandon does not qualify someone to be athletic director. We should not have to hope and pray that it works out. Haven't we done enough of that recently?
|26 weeks 16 hours ago||You know who else isn't||
You know who else isn't Brandon? Me, you, and most other human beings on the planet. "I'm Not Dave Brandon" shouldn't be the best statement on the resume of the person hired to run one of the largest athletic departments in the country tasked with making a critical football coach hire. There are so many other options out there that have actual experience working in an athletic department - or even as Athletic Directors!!! - that also aren't Dave Brandon. Come on, we deserve better than to hire someone that's not DB and hope he works out. If this is true, it's like the Hoke hire. Lazy. Schlissel has told us that he'd rather do anything else other than worry about athletics, and he's proving that he's a man of his word with this.

Congrats on making it to the ToC! A friend of mine who was a 1-day winner in the 90s has great stories from his experience on the show and we enjoy rewatching his episodes every year. His interviews with Alex were particularly cringeworthy.

What if universities turned "Athletic Performance" into a major, like "Clarinet Performance" or "Modern Dance Performance" are? The athletes could be seen as merely fulfilling graduation requirements, not acting as employees. I've long thought this was a good idea just for the reason that universities wouldn't have to deal with putting window-dressing on the academic pursuits of athletes. Football is a form of entertainment just like dance or music, so why not make it a major, right?

Having memories of my parents at my current age makes me feel old. It doesn't seem so long ago that they were my age, and NOW look at them!

Well, okay then. Still, a bunch of mouth-breathers at a (gasp) chain restaurant are still of more value than an indoor rowing facility or bigger parking lot that is empty most of the time. I point your attention to the new Arbor Hills shopping center on Washtenaw, across the street from the Whole Foods. It appears to be a great success so far. Something like that would be great to have on State Street!
|1 year 24 weeks ago||Agreed. If it were on||
Agreed. If it were on Central Campus and to be used for something like a new academic building or new dorm, then fine. But to provide more breathing room for a few hundred kids in non-revenue sports? Not necessary. The tax implications are also very important, like you said. With the city recently making over a million on the sale of the old Y property to a private developer, hopefully they're more open to taking this on.

It would be nice to have a stronger commercial corridor in State Street, extending unbroken from downtown south to Briarwood Mall. Mixing in some residential would be important, though. I would just be unhappy if it damaged the attractiveness of downtown Ann Arbor at all, though. Growth outside of the immediate downtown can be good, but only if you bring in new people to support it and don't gut out the downtown in the process.
|1 year 24 weeks ago||I'd be happy for this one to||
I'd be happy for this one to go to private development, in the vein of mixed-use residential and commercial. Now that I live in the area, I'm less impressed by University facilities that I can't use, and more interested in things like shopping and businesses that I can frequent. Not to mention having a tax-paying entity there is of more use to the residents of Ann Arbor.
I've heard that the university would use it to extend their athletic campus (meh), or their commuter parking lot (meh).

The chart that shows no distinct advantage for an offense that plays fast (ie, no huddle) brings up what I always think about when people on this blog exclaim, "getting to the line late means you can't adjust to defenses!!" Which is, "well, getting to the line late means that it's harder for a defense to adjust to *you*." It seems like getting to the line late would be at-worst a wash for an offense. At best, since the offense is the side that's running a scripted play, giving the D as little time to adjust (because the odds that they happen to pick the right scheme to defend are definitely <100%) could be a good thing. Am I way off here?

Every time I read something like this:
"The offensive line turned the protection, but Fitz didn’t get a chance to hear them. They turned it late, and Fitz didn’t hear them, so that leaves the guy unblocked."
It makes me wonder how that play would look in the UFR if Devin hadn't clued us in to that series of events. How many plays have wrinkles, miscommunications, etc, that may be chalked up to "Al Borges is fat and stupid," or RPS -1 or what have you, on this site. After reading the above I struggle with how big of a grain of salt I should take the UFRs and game analyses.

My wife has had surgery for trigger finger on both hands. The doctors tried cortisone shots both times before surgery, but that treatment only lasted a couple of weeks at best. I suspect they'll give that a shot with you, also. If that doesn't work, the surgery is not fun. It's outpatient with a local anesthetic, but the recovery is very difficult. Lots of pain, can't get it wet, have to worry about the incision getting infected, and have zero use of that hand for a good 4-6 weeks. My wife still has some pain after almost a year on the second hand she had done. The first one had great results. In both of her cases, the scar is about an inch long in the palm of her hand. Best of luck to you, and I hope you have someone who can help you with things since you'll be one-handed for awhile!

The 9-1-1 call might be even more entertaining, if that's how we're treating this as a society (not a criticism, thank goodness it turned out as well as it did so that people feel comfortable laughing at some aspect of it). Link to the call partway down on this page:
