I just realized the tree thing watching the game.

I read your whole post using

I read your whole post using Bo's voice inside my head. The avatar requires this.

Good comments. I really find

Good comments. I really find it hard to believe, though, that Brandon was in doubt after OSU. My opinion. But if he was still thinking RR was viable, he could have, should have, would have bolstered him up for recruiting and continuity purposes.  If Brandon really and truly had no idea what RR's fate was until 1/1/2011, then we are about to see a disaster unfold.

And another one that I think

And another one that I think eliminates RR no matter how the CC plays out: he has lost the team. Unrest on defense, an offense that knows it can be stopped by big time defenses. He doesn't have them anymore, IMO.

I don't like that version. I

I don't like that version. I never liked William of Occam.

Thanks. I was afraid to post

Thanks. I was afraid to post it as a Diary.

Once or thrice on mgoblog I

Once or thrice on mgoblog I have made a mess...

...and was slow to admit it. I was roughed up nicely. In retrospect, I should have just admitted my brain fart and moved on.

We all love us some Geaux_Blue, but on this one, it's time to cut your losses.

Nonsense. It's interesting

Nonsense. It's interesting and helpful in our trying to evaluate the potential of a very young team.

.

Hmmm...

Wouldn't you still have a

Wouldn't you still have a chat? Let's face it, everyone reading this now DESPERATELY wants him to be a LB. I assume the coaches have that secret thought.

The more likely scenario is that GERG is not involved in any recruiting for another reason?

Do you notice that he did not

Do you notice that he did not meet with GERG? Am I reading too much into it that a key LB prospect doesn't meet with the DC at a home game?

This is rarefied air. No

This is rarefied air. No difference in potential between Dee and any of the RBs ahead of him.

WTF?

WTF?

If RR every devises a defense

If RR ever devises a defense that does that, well, then...

LOL, I was at that 9-3 game

LOL, I was at that 9-3 game thirty years ago. Bob Ufer's last game.

Not really. But when the sky

Not really. But when the sky was falling post-UMass and post-Indiana, I attempted to show that defensive suckitude in a Bend and Slowly Break defense is not linear. And, no, that Y axis has nothing to do with points!

I think a good example of

I think a good example of this is Denard. He has sick speed, but so do a lot of guys. It is his shiftiness - subtle changes of direction at high speed that breaks ankles - that makes him the nation's leading rusher.

Michigan 38, Iowa 27

Classic line:

Association with THE KNOWLEDGE  is increasing the predictive power of the masses

He's going to have to improve

He's going to have to improve on that meager 22 yard per carry average if he wants to play with Denard.

Damn, I hope so. It's at LB

Damn, I hope so. It's at LB that we just need to find some players for the future. Perhaps MRob, Mike Jones, Demens, Kellen Jones next year. Come on, baby. We need to find a David Harris in the rough.

Perhaps the orientation of

Perhaps the orientation of the team determines the value of the bye week. If a team is predominantly a defensive power, then the opportunity for radical scheme changes is limited. For a team with an offensive orientation, then whole new packages can be rolled out and practiced using the extra time. Of course I say this so that both Iowa’s bye week and our upcoming bye week will both be positives for us.

But a couple data points that might support this (this comes from a quick look at schedules – not certified 100% accurate):

  • Iowa’s (defensive team) bye week record.
  • RR’s September/Opening Day performance (close loss to a good Utah team with a horrid team, mashed WMU, mashed UConn), He’s also 4-1 at WVU.
  • Looking at too few other data points, Penn State (defense) is 2-3 and OSU, strangely enough, is 1-1 (they don’t seem to like scheduling bye weeks). Florida (offense mostly) is 7-0. Skewed because of Florida’s inordinate success. Oregon is 6-0.

This is a potential diary, but not for me today. Calling all Mathletes.

DRob looks, even then, so

DRob looks, even then, so comfortable with the rollout, and more instinctive/so dangerous. Am I imagining things, or, since DRob has become a more proficient passer, is RR rolling him out less?

Thanks. Good feedback. Do you

Thanks. Good feedback. Do you think Parker (from afar) changes anything up or stays with assignment football?

Did you add an M to you giant

Did you add an M to you giant insect dude?!?

Come on, Stephen! A little

Come on, Stephen! A little humor is all...

Dude has put it all out

Dude has put it all out there! No wiggle room left.

I think I would sell my soul for the KNOWLEDGE to be right...

Sigh. Trying to put a pretty

Sigh. Trying to put a pretty face on it, I guess. When I fielded my GERG concerns in the past, I get swarmed with people who question my IQ and understanding of Defense. It's concerning.

Here's where I have let

Here's where I have let smarter people than me (this is a large n) change my mind. GERG may not be able to build an elite D, but his resume and football knowledge suggests he can build a serviceable one, say, with some years of recruiting Michigan talent, something in the 30s or 40s. Something very much like State showed Saturday. And while that may not be what we all want, with RR's offenses, it should be waaay more than enough.

Touché.

Touché.

TOB's perspective here is

TOB's perspective here is pretty much hard to argue with. The only counter is to continually keep laying the blame at the feet of personnel, which is a tired old chestnut. Why, we might ask, does it seem that most back seven Michigan recruits, no matter how highly regarded, always seem to suck? Occam's Razor says it's the coaching/scheme, not the recruits. Other teams do far more with far less. Appy State can shut down Manningham, Arrington and Matthews with no-stars - a single data point, to be sure, but the point stands: we have sufficient personnel to not be this horrid, to not be 120th in pass defense.

I don't know WTF we should do. I guess hope that GERG can create an average defense to go with the high octane offense that clearly RR knows how to create out of thin air.

LOL, OK. More calmly.

LOL, OK. More calmly.

Thanks, mejunglechop! God has

Thanks, mejunglechop! God has sent me Dee Hart to distract me from my mortal sin.

OK, OK, so everyone is

OK, OK, so everyone is entitled to start one stupid fucking thread in their lives.  Need kickoff.

Something for him to chase

f(x) = x/2 if x is

f(x) = x/2 if x is even

f(x) = (3*x+1)/2 if x is odd

Ouch.

Ouch.

Is that sarcasm? If so,

Is that sarcasm? If so, that's big brass ones at 30 points. The "dumb thread" police have credentials, you know.

bouje, hating a Buckeye is

bouje, hating a Buckeye is never a stupid opinion. But, alas, Pryor would have been worth probably 5 victories over the last two seasons and perhaps two bowls. He is not as good, and never will be as good, a college QB as DRob, but he would have been huge for us.

But I will take fate.

Wow. That's a Clarence Darrow

Wow. That's a Clarence Darrow cross right there.

You guys have as much chance

You guys have as much chance at winning the MNC as 22 oompa loompas. Maybe a slight exaggeration, but the point stands. You are a flawed, overrated team that will likely lose two games in conference and get punked in a bowl game. Why? Tressel has never been able cope with high octane offenses run by a competent QB. The Tresselosaur is a dangerous raptor, but mammals (spread) befuddle it. Watching him trying to implement it is funny, watching him defend it is even funnier.

Yes, I know about Oregon last year; blind squirrels and all that. The body of work is that modern football will swallow Tressel's career over the next decade.

They all miss the point.

They all miss the point. These awards are to recognize performance, not "stretches" of competence followed by stretches of bad play. He is a physical specimen, but he is also as dumb as a rock and an average Big 10 QB at this point.

I just read the national

I just read the national Rivals commentary and this myth of a great MSU defense is still being bandied about everywhere you turn.

"But Michigan State is 20th in the nation in run defense and hasn't allowed an individual to reach 100 rushing yards this season."

No anlysis, just a blind acceptance that MSU has a monster D.

This is a stats-free thread!

This is a stats-free thread!  Uh, oh, wait. Damn, those are really interesting stats, so they are approved. Truly, I had no idea that the rush offenses MSU has faced so far are so anemic.

The great news is that everyone - and I mean EVERYONE - I have heard in the local and national media is saying how MSU represents the first tough, physical defensive test for our offense and let's suspend judgment on Michigan's offense until the world sees the outcome of that battle. WTF? We'd be opening our veins with such numbers.

According to Jim Miller, bad QB, bad analyst:

Somebody will always have Denard accounted for and they are all guys that can run.  They outweigh Denard and all MSU defenders who have the opportunity, will be instructed to deliver punishment.  Denard is frail at 180 lbs.  You slow players like him down by physical abuse.

Sorry, the only challenge to

Sorry, the only challenge to date was at East Lansing and they did poorly.

Performance against the rest of the schedule argues they were overrated as a preseason top 10 team nationally.

Arguably. But everything in

Arguably. But everything in friendly confines plus a more narrow win over a common opponent at home rather than on the road tips the balance towards a team with two road victories. It's close, but as your throwback author, I chose Michigan.

Think about that! If we can

Think about that! If we can win the next two home games where will be favored (maybe a small dog against Iowa), we have a great chance to be 10-0 heading to Madison, anyway.

Wow!

Simply outstanding. I award

Simply outstanding. I award you a kitten.

And a damn good one at that.

And a damn good one at that. This shit is complicated.
