Didn't Je'Ron Stokes switch his commitment from Tenn to UM on NSD? If I recall correctly, he was like the 8th ranked WR in the class or something like that.

I don't mean to kill the positive vibes...but I used to listen to the Herd regularly and remember him making a similar claim about Floridas last coaching search.

I could be wrong...but wasn't the whole bidding war for Cam Newtons services between Auburn and MSU?

What about Sumlin? I know he's not on the same level of the coaches you just named but I guess that would depend on the writer's definition of "Tier 1".
Wasn't there some story about Brandon interviewing Sumlin in '07? (probably BS).

Because the current coach isn't working? "Plan C" - at least in my opinion - just means unproven.
|13 weeks 2 days ago||I've been saying this for the||
I've been saying this for the last two days...everytime one of the big name program HC jobs opens up, the fans/media speculate about A-list candidates and it almost never happens.
I think a lot of UM fans should come to terms with the idea of landing a "Plan C" level guy and they should be OK with that.
Harbaugh would be ideal, but he's not the only guy out there who can lead this program back to prominence.

That's what they said about Texas, Florida, and USC and neither we're able to land their top choice.

I would love Harbaugh or Miles, but I'm not getting my hopes up. Whenever these big name jobs open up people speculate all of these top coaches moving around and it never happens.

Patterson and Whittingham is just my non-Harbaugh wishlisht. I don't think either of them are coming.
RE: McElwain - I think fans to come to terms with the idea of neither Harbaugh, Miles, Mullen, or any other candidate in those top two tiers coming to UM. You look at the hot coaching candidates these days like Sumlin, Briles, Mullen, Gundy...instead of trying to pry them from their current/established position, go find the next guy whose on his way.
So when you look at that crop of candidates, guys like McElwain, Chuck Martin, Frost, Herman, Doeren...I prefer McElwain. I like that he learned from Saban and has CSU trending upward. I like that his offense fits the current personnel and that it's effective. CSU's offense was at the bottom of the barrel and after one transition year they've been top 20 the past two seasons. I think he's projecting to be a successful coach in college football.

I said this in the "if hoke is retained" thread...waiting until the team meeting made the most sense of the situation and explains why the AD has been quiet and why it has been business as usual in Ann Arbor today.

The reality of the situation is that no school pulls coaches from those types of positions. For some reason people always want to assume that people will just jump ship for the slightest improvement in "prestige" but it rarely happens.

I think if Shane can be more decisive in his reads and accurate with the quick throws than DG has been lately it might help to keep the defense honest.

That's a sack and a half better than Clowney...just saying, sacks aren't the only measurement of success even for a pass rusher.

According to Rivals...
Coming off a 11-2 B1G title year...OSU's class was #26
Coming off of an apperance in the title game...LSU's class was #18
Oklahoma and Georgia have not recurited top 10 classes in over 3 years
The year before they played in the title game...the Domers had the #20 class.
My point is that consistantly hauling in top 5 (hell, top 10) classes is extremely difficult and rare. One low ranked class (due primarily because of numbers crunch) does not signal the end of the world.

I don't really know where else to put this...but I'm home for the week helping to take care of our newborn and am watching the Senior Bowl Practice...
I feel like it is worth mentioning that Michael Schofield is doing fantastic and is being applauded unanimously from the commentating crew including several comments about "great technique" after stoning Hageman.
I figured it was worth bringing up with so many concerned about Funk's tutledge.

What he has accomplished in his time there is pretty remarkable.
I was shocked UConn didn't inquire about his services when they were looking for a HC.

I love sitting back watching these big-time program coaching searches. Every time a top program has an opening the fans and media go nuts with possibilities and they all start speculating about other AQ coaches moving...but it rarely ever happens.
Most of these spots go to head coaches from smaller schools or coordinators. It's very rare to see one of these open spots go to a coach who is already a HC at an established program.
Dont get me wrong, it happens...Sarkisian (i guess), Miles from OkSt (i guess), Saban from MSU to LSU (i guess).
Look at some of the top coaches at established programs (aside from Meyer and Saban who were basically unemployed at the time)
- Stoops - DC
- Dantonio - DC
- Gundy - OC
- Fishcer - OC
- Sumlin - HC Houston
- Tressel - HC Youngstown State
- Malzahn - HC Ark State
- Chip Kelly - OC/HC @ New Hampshire
- Briank Kelly - HC Cinncinatti
- Pinkel - HC Toledo
- Briles - HC Houston
- Petersen - HC Boise
- Swinney - Clemson Asst. Coach
- Shaw - DC
While anything could happen...I doubt Sumlin, Briles, Fisher, Malzhan, or Shaw will be wearing burnt orange next season.

While I love the optimism...haven't we seen Al get more experimental with lesser competition? Like CMU this year, we opened up in shotgun and ran no-huddle. If they wanted to experiment wouldn't that be a better environmet to do so with less risk involved?
