I lived in Alamogordo for 6 months for work. Not great by itself, but within driving distance of a ton of stuff to do. NM is an underrated state overall, if you like the kind of things it can offer (scenery, hiking, no people, prehistoric sites, etc.). |

MSU did an investigation into the $400 thing, didn't find anything, but did find $40 in improper benefits on Friday. Then Saturday MSU said Bridges was cleared in the $400 thing but failed to mention the $40 thing. And on Sunday, Bridges was asked if he ever received improper benefits, and he said no - two days after paying back $40 in improper benefits. Okay. |

There's info in the box that the bottle comes in. I'm not sure if it's only with ones above a certain price point or not. My bit of land came with a bottle of An Cuan Mor. |

Laphroaig is... robust. But if you buy a bottle, you receive lifetime ownership of one square foot of land on their distillery property. Then you can go to Scotland, visit their distillery, and they'll give you coordinates, muck boots, and a flag from your home country so you can find your plot and plant your flag. |

It was the start of Tennessee fans hating Michigan. Peyton is their God, and that Heisman would've cemented him as the greatest player in college football that year, and one of the greatest in history... except for some guy from Michigan. So he went on to a long and illustrious career in the NFL and would've easily been considered the greatest quarterback of his generation, if not all time... except for some other guy from Michigan. |

I know what you mean, I don't think Gruden would coach again unless it's a much better situation, but my friend is pretty plugged in down there and that's the word. Rumors ain't worth shit and we'll probably never know the truth, but it's fun to talk about, especially when it's happening to a fan base as neurotic as that one. |
20 weeks 1 day ago | . |
From what I'm reading, UT basically had Gruden locked up, terms agreed, booster money in place. But their biggest donor, Jimmy Haslam, has a hard-on for Schiano and convinced Currie to bring in Schiano through the back door, unbeknownst to the other boosters. That started the shitshow, and we all know the rest. Maybe Gruden is still out there, or maybe he's turned off by it all and won't sign now. The fans seem to want Tee Martin, but apparently Peyton Manning is pushing back against it. Their only realistic choice might end up being ol' pizzafarts himself, Brady Hoke. |

Football take: This season is PSU's last chance for a while. Next offseason, Barkley goes pro. Moorhead is a head coach somewhere else. Blacknall, Hamilton, and Gesicki all graduate so McSorley has no one to throw to behind an OL that won't improve enough. The DTs, Cabinda and his backup, and their entire starting secondary graduate. The coaching isn't good enough to make up the difference, and they come back to earth hard with a challenging schedule in 2018. The recovery beyond next year is slow. Halloween take: It is the best day for parties, which I am too old for. Thanksgiving is for eating. Christmas is for family. New Year's Eve is cold and not really that special. Everyone leaves at halftime of the Super Bowl because they have to work the next day (hey NFL, put the Super Bowl on Saturday night and watch your ad revenue double). But you put a bunch of people in weird costumes into a room with booze and you got yourself a good time. |

Jozy seems to have some trouble with the ball at his feet. It would be nice to have a better finisher up front (said nearly every soccer team ever) but he's probably the best option. To me, consistent lineup is underrated. |

Hoke did just fine with Rich Rod's players. In fact, he did worse with his own players, which in turn Harbaugh did just fine with. It's almost as if the coach has something to do with it. |
38 weeks 1 day ago | Bacon Explosion |
Recipe is easily googled.
1 lb bacon (regular, not thick) 1 lb ground sausage Deli-style sliced cheese of your choice Rope smoked sausage (optional) BBQ sauce BBQ rub (optional)
Weave a bacon mat, 6 slices in each direction. Fry the rest crispy and set aside. Smash the ground sausage onto the mat in an even layer, leaving about an inch around the sides. Place 4 slices of cheese on the sausage. Crumble the fried bacon and sprinkle on top of the cheese. Add some BBQ sauce. At this point I like to put in a piece of smoked sausage that is the same length end-to-end as your ground sausage layer. Roll the monstrosity into a tube - PROTIP: roll the ground sausage layer first with everything rolled up inside it, then roll the bacon mat around it. Add BBQ rub to the outside if desired. Secure your meat tube; I use high temp silicone cooking bands. Throw it on the grill for an hour or so, until the bacon on the outside is good and crispy. Directly over the coals will crisp up the outside nicely, but it will flare up. Slice and serve. |

My almost-3-yr-old daughter builds "towers" out of her duplos every night. She also likes puzzles (Melissa & Doug, Crocodile Creek), and those big cheap rubber balls in the bin at the end of the store aisle are fun. Otherwise she just wants to run around outside all the time. When she was younger she liked the stand-up activity tables with lights and sounds and all that. You can't really control what other people buy for your kid, but when you are shopping, make damn sure you can stand the all the songs the toys play, because you will be waking up at 2 am with those songs going through your head. The only thing we really bought when our son was born 2 months ago was a Snuza. We had one for our daughter too. It clips to the diaper and monitors the baby's movement/breathing/heartbeat. If it detects nothing for i think 10 seconds, it vibrates to stimulate the baby. If it goes a further 5 seconds with nothing detected, an alarm goes off. Gave us some peace of mind at night. |

Let's not forget that at Florida he put his name on another student's paper, got caught, then replaced that paper with one that he bought off the internet, got caught again, but before he could be academically punished, he bought a stolen laptop, and when the cops showed up to retrieve it, he threw it out the window, was arrested anyway, and transferred to a JUCO. When at Auburn, he said he did absolutely nothing wrong during his time at Florida. |
45 weeks 6 days ago | I obvously don't know how |
I obvously don't know how much Kinks you've listened to, but you might be underselling them a bit. They do have popsy tunes, since that's what ultimately sold records, and sometimes you just want to listen to something fun. But a lot of their lyrics focused more on social commentary than anything else, from class divisions to hippies and hipsters of the day to the chew-up-spit-out nature of the music industry, not to mention "Lola," all still relevant here 50 years later. Depth and meaning are important to a degree, but I think there's such a thing as laying it on too thick. |

I dropped this in another thread, but I think the Kinks are better than the Beatles. Assume all two-lane roads since that's where I live. A vehicle traveling northbound is turning left to travel westbound. There are no vehicles waiting at the stop sign in the eastbound lane, so the driver tightens their turn and cuts completely across the eastbound lane. This drives me crazy. A part of the road I drive to work goes downhill -> mild curve -> uphill. If no other cars are immediately present, some vehicles will come down the hill, drift completely into the oncoming lane through the curve, then slide back into their own lane to go up the hill. This ain't Gran Turismo, pal. Stay in your lane. |

It's fairly common to hear about it spreading around toddler-age day care classes, and the symptoms can be pretty bad for them: rashes, blisters, etc. on the hands, feet, and mouth. Then of course they bring it home. The good news is that in adults, I believe it typically presents mild common cold symptoms, so it's probably nothing to get nervous about. |

A guy walks into a bar in Columbus with a parrot, a pig, and 2 quarters. He calls the bartender over and says, "I'll bet you, or anyone else in this bar, $100 that I can put my balls in this pig's mouth and then remove them unscathed." The bartender replies, "Hell, I'll take that bet." The man drops the 2 quarters in a glass and sets the pig on the bar. He then carefully places his balls in the pig's mouth and rattles the quarters in the glass. The pig closes its mouth, and after a few moments the man hits the pig over the head with the parrot, the pig opens its mouth, and the man removes his balls, unscathed. "Well I'll be damned," says the bartender as he slides a hundred dollar bill across the bar. The man turns to face the other patrons and says, "Anyone else care to give it a shot?" A minute of silence passes before a young OSU fan stands up. "I reckon I'll try," she says, "you just have to promise not to hit me on the head with the parrot." |

Beefeater doesn't have that strong juniper taste. Excellent for g&ts. When it's warm out, make a gin & tonic with a lime slice, mix it with an equal amount of lemonade (yellow or pink), add a splash of cranberry juice, you'll have yourself a good drink. |
2 years 13 weeks ago | Congrats |
Congrats man. I'm a little late to the party here, but I'm going for it anyway. Financially, I agree that you should try to stock up on diapers; get a lot via the baby shower. Also, I've heard you can get a pretty good discount if you pre-pay the hospital for the birth - otherwise the bills just keep coming after you bring the baby home. I didn't hear about this until afterwards, so I don't know much about it, just maybe something to look into. I didn't read any books, but my wife references the "what to expect" books from time to time. If you're having a hospital birth, you should go take a tour of the hospital. An Infant CPR class would also be a good idea, for peace of mind at the very least. My wife got up with the baby every night while she was on maternity leave, but once she went back to work, we alternated nights. That way, no matter how many times you have to get up with the baby during the night, you know you're going to get to sleep the next night. That's about all I got. You'll figure it all out. Babies aren't that hard. |

I live pretty close to Harrisonburg VA, the self-appointed beer capital of Virginia. Two breweries (Brothers and Pale Fire), another on the way (Wolfe Street), and a satellite taproom room for Three Notch'd. Pale Fire and Brothers both make really good stuff, but I don't think they distribute far. Otherwise, I'm usually drinking Dogfish Head, Ballast Point, Lagunitas, Firestone Walker, Bells, or my own poorly-made stuff. Only tradition I can think of is saving a Hopslam for Michigan's opening kickoff every year. |

Butcher block is beautiful. The maintenance isn't really that bad. You can install it yourself. You can then reinstall it yourself 5 more times before it costs as much as granite. I worked contract archaeology for a summer in North Dakota about a decade ago. The first weekend we were there, one of my roommates and I went to one of the two local bars in town. Being North Dakota, they had some weird shitty beers we'd never heard of in the cooler, so we started ordering them. Each time we got a round of beers, the bartender gave us free shots because she "made too much for those guys down there who ordered them." For the last shot (after 6 rounds of beers and 5 rounds of free shots), she said we could order a free shot, whatever we liked. So I told the red-headed bartender that I like Red Headed Sluts. While I was genuinely not hitting on her, she must have taken it that way because she giggled and skipped off to make our shots. From that first weekend in May until we left in October, we were at that bar 5 or 6 nights a week and never once were asked to pay for our drinks. We were never even presented a tab. We just tipped the bartender somewhere between $20 and $50 depending on how much we drank. I saved no money that summer. Side notes, when it was closing time at the bar, they would just pour whatever was left of your drink into a solo cup and send you out into the street. The bar had a blackjack table in the corner that only seemed to be live after midnight. The bars in town sold pint bottles of hard liquor - this bar would sell you a shot of Everclear, but not a bottle; the bar across the street would sell you a bottle of Everclear but not a shot. It was a strange place. |

I don't mind fall Saturday weddings. If a game is more important than your friend or family member's big day, then just stay home. I don't mind when people refer to their favorite team as "we." Without fan support, college sports are all just club sports and there are zero pro teams. You are the reason for the team's existence - go ahead and say "we." My definition of a sport hinges on two things: the ability to cause your opponent's failure (defense) and an absolute scoring system (no judges to be biased or bought). Golf isn't a sport. Bowling isn't a sport. Figure skating isn't a sport. Sports are played by athletes, but not all athletes play sports. |

This all reeks of the preseason, when motivational tactics ruled. Gardner isn't performing how he should, so what is Hoke's go-to sub-ass fire-lighting statement? "Your job is up for grabs." But the established starter always seemed to "win" that job. Maybe it goes so far as to bench Gardner for a game. Regardless of what happens tomorrow, I think he starts against Rutgers. |

To expand on Mr. Berenson's chart, if VCU's opponent commits 15 or more turnovers, VCU wins. If the opponent commits 14 or fewer turnovers, VCU loses. This is excepting their last game against St. Louis. Michigan has only committed more than 14 turnovers twice - at MSU and at PSU. So if VCU mugs the shit out of Michigan and nothing is called, or they start chucking no-look arm-punt threes with a hand in their faces that subsequently hit nothing but net, then we should all worry. Otherwise, I feel okay about the chances. Anything can happen, but I like our guys. |

I thought when your teammate set a pick for you, you were supposed to essentially rub shoulders with him to run the defender either into the pick or into chase mode. Why do Michigan's ball handlers always seem to leave enough room for the defender to squeeze through? What's the point of the pick? Why does no one just go up strong and try to draw the foul instead of shooting a 2 foot fadeaway reverse? Why does my mood improve when my TV is muted? And if my mood is improving, why is the cat still hiding under the bed? |

Last day at the old job was yesterday, and I'm starting the new job next week, so I have a bit of a long weekend. After 7 years of traveling for work, I think I deserve it. Answers: 1. My brother-in-law and his fiancee are throwing an Arrested Development party. I've only seen the show a couple times, but they said to show up wearing something based on whatever you know about the show. I'm going as a banana. 2. Not into overnight backpacking, but I do hike a lot. I live pretty close to the Central District of the Shenandoah National Park. I proposed to my now-wife at the Bears Den Overlook, which is on the AT and has a pretty nice trail center. 3. I grew up in Michigan, but none of my friends there are MGoBloggers as far as I know. I moved to Virginia and met a couple dudes who are, though. 4. Merican cheese, bacon, some shredded Mexican cheese blend sprinkled on there. Pepperoni is good too, but a little greasy. Also good is bacon and cheese grilled between two slices of cheesy garlic Texas toast (fried egg optional). |

The Galaxy phones use Google's Android operating system. You can shorten android to "droid" but you might have to pay George Lucas some royalties to do so. At any rate, wallpapers are usually just wallpapers, and an image can typically be cropped in-phone to fit the phone's wallpaper size, and the ones you made are awesome, so most people should be aware that they can put them on their phones regardless of OS. Bottom line: excellent work! share with all! |

The team scores ~2 points per possession that Stauskas takes a 3. So they just need Stauskas to shoot a 3 on every possession, and with the Kobe stuff it will average out to being the same as scoring a 2 point bucket on every trip right? So with Michigan having about 63 possessions per game, that's 126 points per game, every game. Math. |

I went down to Columbus for the '06 game and it was so-so. Some bar had a screen/projector setup in their parking lot and we ended up watching the game there. I was with a handful of fairly large men, one of whom was an OSU fan and was so attired. I'd say roughly 60% of the people ignored us, 20% were rude and threatening (especially the girls, who screamed in our faces regarding our fandom and assumed sexual orientation while their male friends waited for us to say something, anything), and 20% said they respected our fandom, and hey if Michigan wins, we'll help you get to that policeman over there, but then you're on your own. We all know the outcome of the game, and it still led to beers being thrown at our heads upon our exiting, but at least my jeep wasn't vandalized. So I guess I don't know how toned down it was at that time, but it still felt like we weren't that far away from being beaten at any point. A lot of my secure feelings derived from said large fairly large men. On a related note, a couple weeks later I was at a good sized bar in Lancaster, Ohio, that obviously was full of OSU fans. The Big Ten season was already over of course, but important games were still being played. When #2 USC lost to UCLA, a hush fell over the place, as most people were aware of where things stood. I was thinking the same thing as many other people there, but no one said anything, except one dude in the middle of the bar, clad head to toe in Michigan gear, who stood up with both fists raised triumphantly above his head and screamed "Rematch, bitches!"

Got a growler of Laughing Dog Citra IPA that they apparently brewed special for the 10th anniversary of Capital Ale House (VA bar/restaurant with a handful of locations). Figured it was a good night to drink the whole thing. |

I agree that grilled cheese is the greatest stuff on earth. I once made one for breakfast that was bacon, fried egg, and cheese on cheesy garlic texas toast (cheese side in). Your deluxe one sounds excellent, I must try. My lunch was Taco Bell. The Cheesy Gordita Crunch was my favorite thing on the menu to begin with, but then my buddy let me know that you can get one with the inner hard taco shell replaced with a Dorito taco shell. Now that's a good lung meat treat right there. |
5 years 21 weeks ago | no worries |
The picture isn't really supposed to mean anything. I got in on the dickheadery by replying to you with a comment about the "yakety sex" thing without realizing that someone else had already referenced it about 45 minutes earlier. So I changed my post to a picture of Denard to cover my fuck-up. |

Rumor has it that Fulmer voted Michigan #4, and Joe Paterno let one of his assistants fill out his coaches' poll, and the assistant left Michigan off entirely. |

Ranger is excellent. Top 5 IPA. |

Jeter fractures his ankle. That changes a lot - lineup, defense, Ewing theory? |

Discounting the fact that the two hits were home runs since they turned out to be "meaningless," I think two hits over seven innings counts as a gem. Especially the 14 outs in a row on the back end. Good guessin'. |
5 years 32 weeks ago | Unique perspectives |
Maybe a really wide stitched together panorama? Or something super tight like an eyeball with part of the helmet visible (enough to recognize the helmet)? A touchdown from your knees? You take great pictures, let's see something crazy. |

You missed your chance to make a way overplayed popular culture reference that might be so overplayed that regular people aren't comfortable making it anymore, yet it's right on the edge of hipsters making it just to be ironic, and you could have been the coolest person in the world! Eh, I'm upvoting you anyway. |

My wife and I (emphasis on the I) are fixing up an old farm house that her grandparents left behind. I've already ripped out the kitchen and put in a whole new one, painted the first floor, and replaced some rotted floor boards in various areas, and I'm about to head over and start a plywood / cement board / tile sandwich on the bathroom floor. Besides the painting, I have zero experience with any of this stuff, and it all turned out great so far. Point being, don't get too nervous, I'm sure it'll work out just fine. |

Luke Zimmerman is an OSU slappy; every article he writes takes a swipe at Michigan, subtle or otherwise. EDSBS is great, but I don't read anything by Zimmerman anymore. |

Their IPA is one of the best on the market. Good on them. |

I like how Borges isn't overly technical in the video. He sounds like just a dude breaking down a play and simply pointing out the good and the bad and how to improve. I realize he might be playing down to the audience somewhat, but it's clear that he's a good teacher. |

My wife heard that the expert math people said there must be a winner because all possible number combinations were exhausted with the high sales. I find that hard to believe considering random number generators will produce the same series of numbers from time to time, but who knows. They're the experts, not me. |
6 years 3 weeks ago | oh man |
I bought a $5 easy, and all I could remember was that two of the lines started with 02. I saw this post, freaked out a little, and had to run and get my ticket. Now I'm just a sad guy in need of a change of underpants. |

That game 7 was a complete farce anyway. And one single turnover doesn't cost a game. Nearly infinite things figure into a win or loss. Kronwall is solid. Picking on the second best defenseman on the team is weird. |
6 years 3 weeks ago | eh |
I disagree with all the reasons you didn't bother to state. |

I was on my honeymoon in Bora Bora for this game. I bought stupidly expensive internet access from the Hilton just to watch the ESPN GameCast slowly change numbers. My wife was okay with this. The marriage is still going well, thank you for asking. |

If you can get to a Total Wine & More, they have a great beer selection, as well as the Whole Foods on Duke Street in Alexandria, surprisingly. |

I drank a shitload of Fat Tire working in New Mexico, and I got kinda sick of it too. It's good, but doesn't quite taste the same as I remember. |

I remember listening to one of the Detroit radio shows shortly after the thing went down, and someone called in who was at the game with the guy Artest mistakenly attacked in the stands. Apparently the exchange didn't happen exactly as described in the article. The caller was laughing because when Artest grabbed the guy and said, "did you do it?" the guy responded with his full name - "I didn't do it, Ron Artest!" |

Well for ricotta, you just have to put 3 cups whole milk and 1 cup heavy cream in a saucepan with a little salt and slowly bring it up to 190 degrees, then take it off the heat and add a few tablespoons of lemon juice and let it sit for 5 minutes to separate the curds from the whey, then pour it all in a cheesecloth lined strainer and let it drain for 90 minutes. What's left is ricotta. |
6 years 8 weeks ago | varies |
I made lasagna for some family - homemade sauce, homemade noodles, homemade ricotta, all surprisingly easy. Drinking some Lagunitas Sucks, some New Belgium Dig, and some weird IPA I found at the grocery store. |

6 years 9 weeks ago | yes |
THAT is a good brew. |
6 years 9 weeks ago | ah |
Good call on the Founders. I do like me some Centennial, but I haven't had the Double Trouble yet. That's going on the shopping list. The Founders website says All Day is only available in MI, OH, NC, and Chicago so that blows. |
6 years 9 weeks ago | Double |
It was the Double Jack; I tried the Union Jack a little while ago too, and it was delicious as expected but not quite the Double. Beer Cloud says Green Flash is sold all over around here, so I'll definitely look for it tomorrow. The Jai Alai didn't come up, but I'll keep an eye out for that as well. I appreciate the info! |
6 years 9 weeks ago | Thanks for the recommendations! |
I'm in Northern Virginia - there are a few really good beer stores around so it's pretty easy to find anything with decent distribution. I actually had the Ruination not too long ago, but I drank it right after I finished a pint of an incredible double IPA from Firestone Walker, so I don't think it got a fair shake from my taste buds. I'll have to try it again. FWIW, my top three IPAs are Two Hearted, Dogfish 60 Minute, and this Lagunitas. Any of those I could drink until I was pear-shaped. |
6 years 9 weeks ago | leftovers |
Couple Lagunitas IPAs that somehow survived the week since the last drinkin' thread. Laying low tonight, but tomorrow I'm gonna run out to the beer store and find some new beer to drink. Suggestions welcome (I'm into IPAs these days). |
6 years 9 weeks ago | smart |
Good interview, Ace. He didn't mention academics, but with offers from Duke and Stanford, he's gotta be a smart kid, right? Also, a Brophy sounds like what you'd get for winning a beer pong tournament or something. |

I'm in Northern Virginia and there are a lot of really good beer stores, so I guess I'm gonna have to do some treasure hunting. |
6 years 9 weeks ago | That's hilarious |
Good story! It's funny that some guys can make some great beer but be clueless about other parts of the process. I guess it goes to show that anyone can make good beer. |
