Umm

You realize you are making a great argument that GRIII should have returned right?  If he could have elevated his game and became a first round pick that is ideal for everyone.

I mean, he isn't playing any minutes for an abysmal team.  He was a second round pick, which means he is making $500,000 this year and unless he shows some signs of life they are unlikely to pick up his 1 million dollar option for next year.  Look at Mitch as a later first round pick; he's guaranteed around 3M for the the next 2 years with team options in year 3 and 4 for up to another 4M.  Being a second round pick historically gaurantees you are less likely to get "free agency riches" and more likely to end up outside of the NBA.

Absolutely

I'm not sure I've seen a 50:50 ball that Minny hasn't gotten.  Really tough to see and uncharacteristic from previous years.

Interesting

He would have been a senior this year.  It is difficult to say what his role would have been with the squad we had last year.  Would he have started over GRIII?  Could he have had a role as a scorer off the bench with his 3 point shooting?  I felt like during his time here he was forced to play the 5 more often than the 4, and I think he didn't do well in that role.

Clearly

They are aware that our transition D is bad.  Was hoping it would be better at this point in the year.

stat line

7/11 from the field, 3/4 FT, 17 points, 8 Rebounds and 3 assists.  How did he put up that stat-line so quietly?

Well

Is it time to panic yet?  Will be very difficult to overcome this start, and giving Purdue all the confidence in the world.

MSU player development

Anyone else think this might be the best MSU basketball team we see in the next few years?  Harris is a top 10 pick on several mock drafts, and would be crazy not to leave for the NBA.  They lose Payne/Appling to graduation.  Their 2013/14 recruiting classes don't have a Gary Harris like difference maker either.  This may be Izzo's best year to move on.

A:TO

Very odd not seeing the advantage in the A:TO rate with a JB team.  Walton and Spike both have low TO rates, so it seems to be mostly from the wings initiating offense.

Agreed

Some recruits do have private accounts, and although I'm not twitter saavy I believe that would solve a lot of these problems.  Almost all high-school kids are on twitter these days, so they should be able to have private accounts and not be harassed.

Re: Weber

Allen Trieu just reported he is going to MSU this weekend.

Visitor List for this weekend includes in-state RBs Mike Weber & John Kelly, also 4-star TE CJ Conrad

just curious

Which spot in our current Defense do you think Wangler would be best suited for?

Hey Magnus

Early on, I remember you ranked the QBs michigan was evaluating.  Has that list changed in your opinion?  Just curious because Speight came in at 8th, behind guys like Chance Stewart, Tyler Wiegars, DeShone Kizer and Travis Smith.  All of those guys could pretty easily have turned Blue if they were offered.  Top 3 were Cornwell, O'connor and Henderson.

Petway sings

Here is a video of Brent Petway singing in Greek at the Greek league all-star game.  Didn't see this posted yet, and I have to agree with the judge holding up a 10 at the end.

No doubt that Satan will be

No doubt that Satan will be in good company when Bo Ryan dies; there is no way that a deal hasn't been made at this point.

Kalis is pretty obvious

Kalis is pretty obvious choice, and if Chris Bryant isn't going to be a factor then Braden will likely need to step up.  I think one guy being overlooked is Tom Strobel.  He had good practice reports last year, and the main issue was he needed some bulk for the SDE spot.  I think he becomes a factor this year.

JB defender here...

I've been a JB defender for years because I felt his teams had always out-performed their talent level.  Now, I'm having a lot of trouble defending him.  Izzo wouldn't allow this type of defense; regardless of freshman.

Wow

Getting just out worked by an inferior team.  Would be nice if JB showed a little passion since his team isn't playing with any.

well

A month ago yes.  I have no idea what has happened since.

Why no timeout?

Seriously JB; needed a timeout before that useless possession where LeVert launched a wild shot.

Horford....

When Horford is in the game, the other team goes on a run.  Never fails.

Sweet 16?

Sweet 16 would be amazing with the way we have played this entire month.  Seriously, our last dominant game was Jan 30th vs Northwestern.  Even when we beat Illinois this past week, we played one good half only.

Well

PSU getting some senior night gifts; ridiculous calls down the stretch.

Stauskas

5th TO tonight.  Man, he is hurting us as much as he is helping.

Yes

I know what a hedge is, and it usually involves Morgan diving back into the lane and not trying to trap.  We ran 2 straight perimeter traps that resulted in open 3s.

Why

Can anyone tell me why we double them on the perimeter with Morgan?  It pretty much leads to an open 3 every time, or worse an easy lay-in with our only big on the perimeter.

Well

He only played 7 minutes and didn't look great.  Guessing he isn't 100%, but hopefully the week off will help.

Exactly

Check umhoops.com.  Dylan had a nice write up about it, and statistically Morgan is one of our best defenders.

Hardaway

Brutal game from hardaway.  Not playing with any confidence.

Still waiting

Still waiting for the next time JB calls a good end of the clock play.

well

You're not alone.  JB's previous teams had a lot more fortitude than these guys are showing.

Bad Foul

Bad foul, but you have to admire them not letting us get easy shots at the rim, unlike our defense.

PSU

PSU hitting their layups.  Which they have lots of.

Stauskas

Time to take a seat.  Getting scored on at will and not contributing on offense.

Hard to the hoop

PSU taking it hard to the hoop every time.  We haven't made them pay for it once.

Welp

ND was supposedly his childhood favorite, and they have produced good TEs lately.  Wouldn't be surprised if this is true that this one is over by next weekend.

No question?

I would say it is still a little early to say that Darius did the right thing "no question."  He is in the second year of his 2nd round pick contract, which is the final year.  If he gets picked up again next year and gets a decent contract?  Then yeah; good call.  It's definetly not a slam dunk he will be retained.  If he played his way to a late first round pick, he would have had 2 guaranteed years and team options for 3rd/4th years at a price that teams rarely turn down.  4 years to find a niche is better than 2.  I am a huge fan of Darius and hope he has great success, but leaving early to be a 2nd round pick is a dicey proposition.

It's probably

Dashonte Riley; former Syracuse big from class of 09 - was a 4* prospect.  Already has 3 blocks.  He's not EMU's typical talent.

Nebraska or ND

Nebraska or ND for the luckiest team this season?  I think it's ND, but you can't deny some of the breaks Nebraska has had.  They got to face us with Denard getting hurt; MSU had them beat but their thuggery lost them the game; beat NW by 1 point and squeeked past Wiscy.  I think their luck may run out today.

rebounding

Rebounding seems pretty weak when they have GRIII at the 4 spot.  Going to be an issue again this year if JB refuses to play 2 posts.

short term memory loss....

http://scores.espn.go.com/ncf/recap?gameId=310010127

This just happened 2 seasons ago.  You would think MSU players would understand getting completely worked over by Bama.

So....

I guess my problem with the playcalling tonight wasn't the lack of Denard runs.  Really, my issue was with all of the "denard-bombs" or attempted passes >20 yards.  We all know Denard is inaccurate, but Borges kept looking for the big-play.  More often than not this did not connect.  My feeling is that Borges did NOT believe we could sustain long drives against Bama and was looking for quick strikes.  I found this to be the most disappointing; it usually ended with our D having to come back into the game early.

Yeah

They did explain it was based on several factors.  However, how seriously should we take a quarterback competition that didn't weigh "throwing the football" that heavily?  Sure seems stupid.

Better than 2012....

Just a reminder, we had a total of 3 guys in the Rivals 100 in 2012: Kalis, Pipkins (5*) and Magnuson (4*).  This year we have 6 this early and we still have a good shot at adding 1-2 more (Poggi, Treadwell).

Commits usually tend to drop a bit, but I am a little surprised Dawson didn't break top 100 yet; isn't he one of the guys participating in the rivals 100 challenge?

Yep

Don't forget Schofield should be entrenched at RT for the next 2 years.  If Lewan stays (please), then Schofield and Lewan will be our starting tackles in 2013 with Miller, Bryant and the RS freshman filling in the other spots.  Very young group; this is where those years of thin OL recruiting starts to hurt.  Sure is nice to hear reports that Kalis is playing at the level of a college soph already.

Exactly

He had a coming out party as a senior.  After his Ohio decommitment, he had offers from Dayton, Purdue, Michigan, Xavier and possibly Iowa as well.  That isn't a bad offer list for a mid-west hoops prospect who was a relative unknown.  This is a very different scenario than Spike's recruitment where we were his only major offer.

Well

Looks like even the OSU staff fails regularly to stay classy.  LTT did have an OSU offer according to several sites; sounds like someone feels slighted.

Wow

Impressive highlights.  His HS Scouting reports must read: To tackle effectively, bring 4 friends.

Well

Unfortunately, today and today only several NBA agents will call Burke and tell him he is a lock for 1st round pick.  When he inevitably falls in the 2nd round/undrafted range, they are able to use the popular "April Fools Bilaw" to explain why they misled the young man.

yes and no

ADV's team is loaded and that is why he is mostly an afterthought.  Stauskas' team is similarlly loaded, however Stauskas still finds a way to stand out, put up much better #s and even won MVP after their recent title run.  At a minimum Stauskas is much more aggressive in finding his offense.  ADV looks like he would be a classic JB role player.

Scholarships are limited....

UM was one of his finalists.  The main reason he doesn't end up here IMO is we simply don't have open scholarships.  Provided no attrition, we are full for the 2012-13 season already.  We are actually 2 scholarships ABOVE the limit for 13-14 (not counting Hatch, who after missing a year of hoops would likely have to re-classify if he is able to make a full comeback).

Long story short, we need to lose 2 guys before 2013 to make room for all of our current commits.
