The vertical leap's importance is based on simple physics. 3. I thought Vince looked great, but he's so small, and he hasn't had to play a whole year. Plenty of players look great in short action, but are injury-prone or less effective in full-time use (look at Minor and Brown this year.) 4. I'm also encouraged by Hemingway, let's hope he stays healthy and continues to improve. 6. Martin is an absolute beast at times, but I'd love to see it even more often out of him, which I think we will next year. I think his play next year will really help defray the effects of BG going to the NFL. 7. Maybe I was downplaying Roh a little, but I didn't want my post to look like I was drinking the Kool-Aid completely. We are talking about a team that won 1 conference game this year, remember. |

Does he not have to sit out a year because he'd be switching sports? Is he just being signed for depth, or do you think Rich Rod actually plans on him starting? I can't imagine he'd be much different from a freshman, besides being more physically and emotionally mature. |
| 4 years 6 weeks ago | I must have misread your |
I must have misread your initial post. What I took from it was "Beilein has never recruited stars in the past at his other coaching stops, so he can't do it here, and without those players, Michigan will be limited." I think it's too early to discern what kind of players he can recruit. Sure, he's no John Calipari, but why can't he get the same players Bill Freider or Tommy Amaker got? How do we know he's opposed to one-and-done's? His only full recruiting class of last year's came after a 10-22 season, why would you want to spend 1 year on a rebuilding team? I think the quote you took from Brian is spot on, after all the shit we've been through, having a coach like Beilein is wonderful. It is ridiculous to expect a national championship in the very near future. |
| 4 years 6 weeks ago | WTF is everyone worried about |
WTF is everyone worried about the "ceiling" of Michigan under Beilein? We were a 10 seed when our rotation consisted of 2 walk-ons and 3 freshmen, with not the optimal players for his system. Imagine this team with a talented PG, more depth in the frontcourt and more consistent outside shooting? I think with this system and Beilein's ability to get the most out of his players, we can often contend for the Big Ten title w/ 3 and occasional 4 star recruits. What recruit wouldn't want to come to Michigan if we become consistent winners? |

It's on Mayfield east of Cleveland. I think it might actually be Mayfield Heights. It takes a long time to get there, so I usually only go for the Ohio State game. But even then, there were still Buckeye fans who taunted me in the bathroom about how our QB's sucked. |
| 4 years 8 weeks ago | I live in Cleveland, so it's |
I live in Cleveland, so it's a little different, but the Michigan game is almost always on, and in fact every game was on last year after I got the Big Ten Network. The good thing is that if Michigan is the regional game, it will almost always be shown in Ohio. I don't know of any spots in Columbus, but in Cleveland, there are a ton of Michigan alumni, and we meet at the Fox and the Hound to watch it, so hopefully there's a similar place in C-Bus. |

No, I don't disagree (sorry for the triple negative). When I said 10 returning contributors, I meant to say that the only position we weren't returning a contributor was at QB. It's probably pretty arbitrary to not count him and count others, but I just don't see him "contributing" again this year, so I wouldn't count him. For a list like a "returning starters" list to have value, IMO, it should be "who played a lot last year and is likely to do so again." I'd say Sheridan fails the second prong (hopefully). |
| 4 years 10 weeks ago | It seems like a pretty |
It seems like a pretty pointless argument. Wouldn't a better metric be "positions in which Michigan returns a player who significantly contributed the previous year?" By that metric the only position we're lacking is QB and TE, depending on if you count if Sheridan actually "contributed." On defense, we'd have like 2 on the DL, 2 LB's and 2 in the secondary maybe? So by my very unofficial count, that would be 16 of 22, or 17 of 24 if you want to count the kickers. |

Sims. He comes up big in all the big games. Also we would be completely screwed w/o him, imagine a front line of Gibson and Novak, with Wright and Shepherd as backups? We would be even more severely undersized. |

| 4 years 10 weeks ago | First of all, I only bet 5 |
First of all, I only bet 5 bucks. And second of all, your frowny emoticon, in tandem with the dream statement that preceded it, led to the impression that you were sad that you dreamed that Michigan lost, and the only explanation for said sadness was that you believed that dreaming it increased the probability of it actually happening in real life. It's not as stupid when some people think that liveblogs have created losses and deaths in Sri Lanka. |
| 4 years 10 weeks ago | I had a dream the Seahawks |
I had a dream the Seahawks would beat the Steelers in Super Bowl XL, so I put some money on Seattle. I've since learned that dreams do not predict the future (unless you're one of those characters from Heroes who paint in their dreams). |

What's deceiving about the title? It accurately stated what your thread said...although I was hoping you would actually tell us the date. |

That's what they claim. They claim to not look at conference record, how many teams from that conference are in, or overall RPI. |
| 4 years 11 weeks ago | I think they're still ahead |
I think they're still ahead of us. Joe Lunardi had them as a 10 seed (ahead of Mich) before the game and losing to a good team like Gonzaga shouldn't really drop them. But hopefully we're ahead of them. Looks pretty similar to our resume, I'd put us slightly ahead based on more quality wins. |

| 4 years 11 weeks ago | I agree. We should be able |
I agree. We should be able to beat Iowa without much issue, and the Illinois game could go either way (esp if we figure out a way to stop that tall drink of water Teasdale). I wouldn't be surprised to see Purdue get upset at some point, they seem to be pretty inconsistent. EDIT: I just realized that if we beat Iowa we have to play Illinois the next day. They'll be well-rested and we don't play as well without 3 days rest. Look at the difference between the Duke game the day after UCLA on a neutral court vs. the game at home w/ sufficient rest. I'd put our chances at 20 percent if we get to the 2nd round. |
| 4 years 11 weeks ago | I think Vogrich will have |
I think Vogrich will have more of an immediate impact than you give him credit for. He's ranked higher and is a better shooter than Novak/Douglass were coming out of high school. I wouldn't be surprised if he is ahead of LLP in the rotation, as the first 2 guard off the bench behind Douglass. |

| 4 years 12 weeks ago | I knew I was setting myself |
I knew I was setting myself up badly by using the Lions in my analogy, but I don't know any other NFL team's roster as well as them. It also could be that Rod Marinelli still thought he was a d-line coach, so he tried to field a full team of them. But I think generally teams (at least in the NFL) carry more defensive linemen than offensive linemen. |
| 4 years 12 weeks ago | Good analysis, but I have a |
Good analysis, but I have a minor quibble. O-linemen usually play the whole game, while the d-line is usually rotated in. I think the Detroit Loins had 7 or 8 offensive linemen for 5 positions and like 11 d-linemen for 4 positions last year. But then again, in college o-linemen are usually redshirted and there are more backups because they take longer to develop. But the point is well made. |

True. Criticizing him now for this is stupid, but I still think the backlash on this board was a bit harsh for what was an honest question. Not everyone is an expert on the college recruiting process. |

So we can never question anything he does? |
| 4 years 12 weeks ago | That's an impressive list. |
That's an impressive list. Michigan is on it b/c we played a lot of good teams (I believe we have 8 top 50 losses) and played so many stinkers in the non-conference. It's also a testament to the strength of the Big Ten this year top-to-bottom. Someone should send that to the committee. |

Totally agree. Did you watch these shows during the writer's strike? Colbert was a million times better than Stewart, he's the superior improviser. Anyone who questions me should check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rc1Y5L7DPcQ |

Colbert is funnier than Stewart (I think his act is getting a little old) but the Daily Show has the advantage b/c they can get more interesting guests and they have great correspondents - I love Larry Wilmore, Samantha Bee and John Oliver. But if I could only DVR one, it would probably be Colbert. |

He's been playing horrible defense. I direct you to http://www.umhoops.com/2009/02/15/game-26-michigan-at-northwestern-post-... "The turnovers at the end of the game were frustrating and nearly cost Michigan the game. Fans want to see Kelvin Grady on the floor but John Beilein is learning just how important defense is to winning in the Big Ten. Michigan can’t afford to give up points in bunches if they want to stay in games. CJ Lee is the best on-the-ball defender on this team and that is going to keep him on the floor. When Grady got on the floor late he was matched up with Craig Moore and allowed Moore to get a wide open look from three that would have tied the game because he didn’t fight through a screen (this is a theme). Would I like to see Grady play a little bit? Sure, but I don’t think Beilein is going to let him sniff the court until he steps it up on defense." |

Why are you so sure 8-10 won't do it? I've heard 8-10 teams have made it in the past, and we have great out of conference wins, and are from a top 2 RPI conference. |

Thanks, good analysis. You say he's a good scorer...I hope there are enough shots to go around. Manny can play unselfish at times, but DeShawn seems to get better the more involved he is in the offense, and then you have the white guy gunners (Novak, Douglas). I hope the transition is smooth (and we're playing crappy teams until Wisconsin, so it shouldn't be a major issue.) |

Check out this quote from that emo post from last year: I think that was a gross under-estimation of the Beilein effect. Will people make the same mistake of underestimating the effects of another year in the same system for R-Rod next season? |
