These meetings are also, by…

These meetings are also, by definition, nothing.  They are essentially excuses for management level employees to fly around, stay in nice hotels and eat nice meals on the company dime.

Every once in a while somebody may ask "was it really worth it to send a contingent of management staff off to three seperate, out-of-state meetings in November at a cost exceeding $2,000 per head, per trip?".  And the managers will take this question seriously.  They will admit that while the agendas of the actual meetings are admittedly somewhat unnecessary and redundant,  its really the conversations that happen in, around and after the meetings that justify the high price tag.  So with that out of the way,  please book my flight and hotel for my quarterly association meeting in NOLA in February

I think that calling this individual a victim is where we go wrong.  What really happened to her?  He jerked off on the phone.  Fucking hang up!!  In public discourse we are taught to believe women in all cases, and to see somebody in this position as being the victim.   In this case (and in many others, including multiple situations I have seen in my own career) the woman lodging the complaints does not have clean hands herself, and a cynic could think that they are taking advantage to the automatic benefit of the doubt they receive.

The Tucker case seemed fishy from the start.  I think he gets a nice amount of money on the way out the door.  And if I were his lawyer I'd go after her too.  Mel's never going to coach again.  He has nothing to lose

I will not be spending any money on CFB this year.  The B1G Peacock bullshit, and the swallowing up of half the PAC 12 were the last insults I will take.  If a game comes over my antenna I will tune in.  Otherwise I am done.  I'm not interested to see where this is going.

It's not a straw man…

It's not a straw man argument.  It's a very real issue.  Do you honestly think legal aid would look over a contract offer to a graduating senior from Google and advise them on whether or not they should sign on the bottom line?  I mean, they could probably review any non compete clauses and comment on those, but anything beyond that and they are getting out ahead of their skis.

Or what about an aspiring young tech entrepreneur?  Would legal aid say "sure.  We'll incorporate that startup for you"?  I seriously doubt it.  That's because these programs are meant to assist students who run into common student legal issues (primarily involving landlords, but I have also seen them address low level criminal charges, identity theft, employee/employer conflicts, paternity issues, debt collection etc.).  They're not our there helping LLCs register trademarks or untangling complex licensing deals.

But by all means, these kids are getting free tuition, meals, travel, stipends and NIL money.   Let's just have the taxpayer cover their legal representation too as they are building their fortunes

I sincerely doubt that the…

I sincerely doubt that the University is helping students negotiate contract terms through their student legal aid program.  I mean these are contracts for what in many instances are high dollar, high profile arrangements.  It's not the type of thing student legal aid is designed to address, which falls more into the "My identity was stolen, or I am being evicted" range of issues.

You really don't want…

You really don't want universities placing themselves in an advisory role to athletes with all of these little NIL deals.  That's what an attorney is for.  We can be all "get it" and tell these kids to get out there and get paid while at the same time keeping them under the protective wing of the state.

Also, there would be a huge potential agency problem for an attorney paid by a university to review contracts for a player.  Also too, a huge liability.  No thank you.

I get a little sick of…

I get a little sick of people (not just on this board) calling coaches hypocritical for expressing frustration with the portal/NIL because they themselves earn a lot of money.

I mean, both Saban and Kiffin played college football.  Neither of them got paid for it, while their coaches presumably were earning decent salaries.  They are not asking the players to go through anything that they didn't go through.  Now if they had received huge pay packages as players and then subsequently took a stand against it for players today then that would be hypocritical.

I'm pretty sure college football is headed for a fall.  And honestly I don't even care.  If these kids want cash then by all means go get it.  But I'd rather my university didn't get dirty playing this game.

Late season 2022 Milton gave Tennessee the same types of unrealistic expectations thst 2020 Minnesota game Milton gave us.  Fortunately we didn't have to wait too long to have that bubble popped.  Tennessee on the other hand has had a whole off-season to load up the hype train.  Lord have mercy

The only time I was ever fired from a job I went to lunch knowing that when I got back that I was going to be let go.  Had a Monte Cristo at Bennigan’s.  Then I got fired.

On the plus side, when I got home I had a job offer waiting in my inbox.  Luck of the Irish!

I saw Jalen on celebrity…

I saw Jalen on celebrity Jeopardy.  What I learned is that he knows nothing, literally nothing, about anything except maybe basketball I guess.  He was unable to get out of the hole on his score.  He couldn’t answer even the most softball of general knowledge questions.

He is not a good representative of the University of Michigan.

We hear this about the Fab 5… We hear this about the Fab 5 a lot. But I mean, most of what seems to be attributed to them amounts to wearing baggy shorts, along with essentially disregarding the coach and running the team themselves (not a great thing to do). But we’ve just said this so many times that it seems to be conventional wisdom that they “changed the game”.

I would argue that the Shemy thing is peanuts.  He has some views that are unsavory, which, had he been a little more internet savvy, nobody would have ever known about.  Nobody I have worked with (apart from close acquaintances) has known my politics for over a decade.

MSU got into bed with known misery merchants and sold access to their student body for a pittance.  Might as well partner with Only Fans while they are at it.

I set up the burner not so I…

I set up the burner not so I could go "full Shemy", but so that my opinions on bicycle infrastructure would not cause me repercussions from my political overlords.  In our political culture where even the most seemingly minor difference of opinion can earn you a reprimand, you put your name on the internet at your own risk.

It's best that people know as little about your political preferences as possible, particularly if those preferences are significantly out of step with your paymasters.

I used to work in municipal…

I used to work in municipal government.  Shortly after I took my job in government I found myself in a bit of hot water.  I made some comments on a national urban planning page that were taken by an elected official as being opposed to the stated goals and objectives of the legislative body.  As soon as I heard of it I changed my name and profile pic on Facebook and tightened up my privacy settings.

It was liberating.  I was then able to take the people paying my wages head on without any pussyfooting or sugarcoating.  I found I could also be more open about my beliefs without worrying how the worst people in the world would feel about what I was saying.

I would encourage anybody in public life to maintain two identities.  One noncontroversial and anodyne that you associate with your real name.  And one where you really let your opinions fly.  Our society has a hard time allowing dissent against certain public orthodoxies.   Best to let people think you are an obedient sheep until you no longer need their money and approval.

I'll hate him if he leaves.  I'm not going to lie.  I also imagine he'll be persona non grata in A2 and an afterthought (historically) at any school that he spends one season playing for.

He may or may not get a bigger bag from another school.  We have no idea.  But if he stayed he would be part of the Wolverines basketball pantheon and have access to whatever benefits that affords a former star player.  Choose wisely young man.  He's about to burn a bridge

Jalen complains A LOT about…

Jalen complains A LOT about the University  on social media.  He likes to throw in a little race baiting too, with a lot of "I wonder why that is" or "makes you wonder" type of innuendo.  He recently asked why Michigan hasn't retired the jerseys of the entire Fab 5, which, like, ok dude.  Of all those guys you maybe retire Webber's.  Maybe......if he were clean.  But he helped send the program into a forgotten decade of irrelevance....so no.

The Fab 5 had swagger.   Had they won the big dance they'd have a more rock solid legacy.  But we don't retire jerseys because of cool long shorts.  And not players who's activities while here got them dragged in front a a grand jury.  Jalen can fuck off.  I hope he never gets another nod of recognition from Michigan.  God knows he's talked enough shit about the school in public.  Why the fuck does he even want to be associated with us anyways?

The $40 or whatever…

Ak47

The $40 or whatever for an internet connection is a red herring.  It is 2023.  I have had a high speed internet connection since at least 2007.  During that time I have had MULTIPLE go rounds with each of cable,  Dish network, Direct TV and every streaming service under the sun.  The one constant is high speed internet.

I don't have access to whatever xfinity package you are talking about.   But I find your reasoning to be suspect.  The reason is that I do not feel like all of the non sports cable viewers are subsidizing sports viewers.  In fact, it is quite the opposite.

I am a HULU subscriber (although I get it for free).  I have also at times subscribed to Peacock, Paramount, everything.   These services cost peanuts next to YTTV, even if you are subscribing to all of them.  Philo+ HULU+ Peacock +Paramount is still less than YTTV. My point here is that if you watch regular TV programming and not sports you can get by for cheap.

But sports is where they have you by the balls.  So YTTV has everything a sports guy could want (apart from Bally).  So they are the most expensive service.  The bundling doesn't make sports more viable.  It squeezes you for everything they're worth and then forces you to subsidize other garbage programming.

Anybody subscribing to YTTV that does not do so primarily to watch sports is either rich (and therefore the cost doesn't matter) or not too smart about this stuff.

So it is the consumers who refused to buy the product that were short-sighted?  Not the rights holders who overplayed their hand, made a shit app, and had only shit teams to show?

The Pistons are not watchable.  Again.  The Tigers are most likely going to be terrible.  Again.  I guess the Red Wings are relatively better.

And as a cord cutter I am doing great.  YouTube TV for wolverines football and basketball.   I'm willing to miss some bball games.  There's usually a month where the Wolverines are on the antenna for a month straight, usually October.  I'm a 4-5 month a year streamer.

Heh.  Hehe. Heh.  You said …

Heh.  Hehe. Heh.  You said "hard on"

It appears that these…

It appears that these streaming services are stealthily trying to nudge their prices back up to the old prices we paid for cable.  Joke is on them.  Even though I earn far far more than I did ten years ago I spend much less on TV services.  I'm not going back.  Since March 2022 I have had a YTTV or Sling subscription for 4 months.  With M basketball sucking I don't see myself subscribing to anything until the first M football game shows up on a channel that I can't pick up om my antenna or that I don't have an invite to watch somewhere else.

Fuck these vipers (that includes everyone: media people, coaches, players).  I'm done feeding their insane wealth
