with or without levert, this team will be a wrecking crew a year from now.
a few years ago edsbs described lsu football as a gorilla with a chainsaw for a penis. that's both funny as hell and possibly applies to um men's hoops, 2015-16
|1 week 4 days ago||i don't know about that...||
...again, i don't know diddly, but the mere existence of non-competes tells me that it's not as cut and dried as "your boss can't tell you shit." that and the fact that there is apparently some legislation being underway to end it outright tells me that there's at least some enforceability.
i don't think it's a huge stretch to say that signing a letter of intent and / or accepting a scholarship to a member school should limit your free agency somewhat.
note that i'm not arguing whether the entire loi / scholarship system (or for that matter the mere existence of the ncaa as a 'governing' body) is valid in the first place.
|1 week 4 days ago||well,||
i would only point out that non-compete clauses in contracts are extremely common, to the point that jimmy john's (jimmy john's!!!) has non-competes for its sandwich makers:
i think you can make a case that signing a letter of intent and agreeing to accept a scholarship is a form of a non-compete.
i would also point out that i have literally zero legal insight or knowledge, so this may be utter gibberish on my part.
|1 week 4 days ago||dumb question||
is this the same rule that allows grad transfers? is that rule affected? i'm not a compliance guy, i honestly have no idea.
immediate-eligibility transfers (grad or undergrad) always strike me as pretty cheesy. one of the reasons i love college sports over the pros is the whole 'rooting for laundry' / mercenary aspect of the pros. i can talk myself into believing (rightly or wrongly) that college players have some primal connection to their schools...these types of transfers tear some of that down for me.
|1 week 5 days ago||it's completely different.||
cable systems don't let you do ala carte programming. period. if you want just espn or just hbo you have to get the entire cable package.
|1 week 5 days ago||go girls go||
it's a nice program we've got going here. kim barnes arico has recruited very well; we should continue to be solid to very good.
interestingly, the sparty women, who finished with similar results this season, turned down the postseason. i think they were down to eight players at year end due to injuries.
|1 week 6 days ago||timeouts, timeouts, timeouts.||
'megalomaniacal coaches.' exactly.
this week, at least three coaches will call timeouts before the 16 minute tv timeout after a couple of quick turnovers, or after having given up three three-pointers. book it.

can't wait to see this team next year.
|2 weeks 3 days ago||in beilein we trust, man.||
...the lightbulb has clearly flashed on for zak irvin. if we can get some improvement (and not even a lot) from chatman and a couple of others next season, we could be awfully scary.
|2 weeks 3 days ago||best of luck to him.||
i'm sure he'll be a great representative of the university and the program.
|2 weeks 6 days ago||well, yeah...||
...not sure how you can read the phrase "if hackett has the stones to make the change now" any other way.
|2 weeks 6 days ago||okay, i'll ask...||
...is this a bad idea?
he seems to have been able to identify young talent, has presided over a transitional period in detroit without them bottoming out, seems like a standup guy...
pearson would be my first choice today, but i don't think i'd complain about babcock.
|4 weeks 4 days ago||oh, good heavens.||
the most comment board-ey comment ever.
yes, let's try to figure out his "emotional engagement" based on a flipping press conference.
|4 weeks 4 days ago||+1||
i literally could not agree more.
don't equate press conference persona with anything other than press conference persona.
|4 weeks 4 days ago||is it time yet?||
i think we're supposed to freak out about lack of specific answers on every single question posed, right? "we had a good practice" isn't good enough, right? oh, wait. that was the last guy.
|4 weeks 5 days ago||in beilien we trust.||
"it's becoming easier and easier to see what John Beilein envisioned when he recruited these guys"
man, oh man, how many times have we said essentially that same thing since bill martin hired this guy?
|6 weeks 3 days ago||just so i'm clear here...||
...are you saying that wayne lyons is transferring to michigan for academic reasons?
|6 weeks 3 days ago||wrong article.||
|6 weeks 3 days ago||let it go, man.||
kids are dumb and do dumb things. no need to dance on his head to reinforce that fact.
|6 weeks 3 days ago||i might be the lone voice here, but...||
...i really agree with the eastern washington coach here. i get that the players currently have the right to move on to another school, but there's no reason he has to let him prep at EWU. particularly since he's moving on to oregon, who they play on sept 5. "sure, kid, use our facilities and get better so you can help beat our brains in in a few months." no thanks.
related question: does the grad transfer rule still require that the new school offer a program not available at the previous school? i'm sure that oregon has programs that EWU does not, but that's probably not true in the case of big school to big school transfers, right? like,say...nc state to wisconsin, or stanford to michigan? or are these guys just comparing catalogs once they decide where to go? "oh, good - michigan offers a grad degree in ballroom dance, sounds good to me!"
i guess the whole thing just smacks of college football free agency, and it bugs me. i like that michigan generally doesn't go after junior college players. these guys seem just a tiny step above that.
i know that 'student athlete' is a sham, but i like to pretend otherwise when i can.
also, please remove yourself from my lawn.
|6 weeks 4 days ago||kids.||
kids are funny. and, you know, stupid.
|7 weeks 2 days ago||what an asshole.||
this is no different than tweeting at him. give the kid some freaking room, if he wants help he'll call someone.
but no, apparently this douchebag knows what the kid needs. fuck off.
|8 weeks 5 days ago||that's not why he doesn't talk.||
he doesn't talk because he doesn't want to be told what to do. full stop.
|8 weeks 5 days ago||well,||
i seem to recall a hit-and-run driving thing and at least one DUI. those may or not be technically 'misdemeanors.' i honestly have no idea. i would not call them insignificant or petty by any stretch.
|8 weeks 5 days ago||well, no...||
...not him, or for that matter 99% of the other morons being 'interviewed.'
to paraphrase a popular meme in these parts, "sometimes people who are talking are talking for no good reason."
it's just noise. lynch is just the worst example, a crazy person who also happens to be a fairly massive asshole.
|8 weeks 6 days ago||good for him...||
...there were a couple guys that were not well served by the previous coaching staff.
i hope he goes for 1200 next year and gets a shot at the pros.
|9 weeks 4 days ago||that 1-6 team...||
interesting (to me, at least) that that team was 1-6 on january 22, 2011: as it happens, almost exactly four years ago.
those four years have been completely enjoyable, and they include lots and lots of moments where the path that the team or individual players might take wasn't at all clear. the constant? great coaching that wrung a whole lot of production out of some fairly raw talent. that's still here, and still being applied to yet another young group of as-yet-unformed talent. there's no reason to not continue to give this staff every benefit of the doubt.
in beilein we trust, man.
|9 weeks 5 days ago||screw him.||
a pouting, whiney, douchebag. this is only the latest example.
|10 weeks 6 days ago||it was a ball.||
my girlfriend and i always try come in for a twofer basketball weekend; one men's and one women's, and this year was a ball. where the men's game felt a little sluggish, the women's game was terrific, fast paced, and intense on both sides. kba has those girls on point every minute. it sure was nice to beat those osu ba$tards, particularly with their smarmy coach...they got a ton of calls, and he was still complaining about every whistle.
the girls are a helluva fun team to watch already - they lose goree and ristovski after this year, but the kids and the incoming class look terrific.
man...between hockey having a big weekend, harbaugh, and both hoops teams, it's really fun to be michigan right now.
|10 weeks 6 days ago||exactly||
i read it twice, just to make sure i hadn't missed that...
