- good guy, whatever that means.
- good-to-very good recruiter.
- players love him
- never would have gotten anywhere near this job had he not been an assistant under a very good coach.
- fundamentally unqualified to run a power-5 football program.
- robinson didn't develop all that much from when he got here, but beilein scoped him out way early, too...i don't know that anyone saw him as a draftable nba talent until his senior year in high school. i don't give beilein credit for 'developing', necessarily, but i definitely give him credit for finding him in the first place.
- vogrich is a good call - he didn't come on all that much from his freshman year. that might have something to do with the increased talent level around him, and while he became a sneaky rebounder and would usually give some good minutes, he never turned into the instant offense shooter off the bench that his rep coming out suggested that he might be.
- smotrycz...partially agree on this. he was still a kid when he left, so i might grade that one as incomplete.

...they are also not some sort of black magic that only brian is privy to.
if you want to see them, i might suggest that you pick up a shovel and get to work.
|1 week 1 day ago||first / second round||
the whole thing is beautiful in its slavish, 'brazil'-level adherence to bureaucracy. 'the committee voted" is first - i love the idea of sending around an outlook meeting invitation that includes an agenda with 30 minutes slotted for discussion of the name of the round. and they can't just start calling it the first round right now, either. it's going to take 16 months to turn that battleship.
the ncaa is goddamn beautiful. not even kidding.
|1 week 3 days ago||this is not a "program" issue.||
the response says more about the program than the incident itself.
|2 weeks 3 days ago||oh, yes.||
very, very few of our alt uniforms look like anything other than a clown costume. just waiting for a chrome helmet...
|2 weeks 6 days ago||i'm struck...||
...as always, by how goddamned AMAZING those uniforms look.
die adidas / nike / underarmour die.
|3 weeks 3 days ago||seriously?||
just in the last decade or so, 2004 was a lot of fun. 2006 was FANTASTIC. hell, 2011 was pretty fun.
and if you think the 'stadium experience' hasn't changed i don't' know what i can tell you, and you don't have to go back to 1975 to see it. 2005 is plenty far enough.
|3 weeks 3 days ago||also disappointing?||
that some of the same types complained that rich rodriguez "didn't get it." argh.
|3 weeks 3 days ago||"muggle"||
is absolutely an insult. us non-players don't know what we're talking about.
i get what you're saying, but to take your example a step farther, i don't know anything about the law, but that doesn't mean i can't see when the law screws something up.
i can also see when a football team is screwed up, i don't need to be part of the team to see it.
|3 weeks 3 days ago||agreed.||
we scalped a couple of tickets up in the nosebleeds in the southwest corner, and i honestly don't remember ever being as miserably cold in that stadium. just brutal.
we always go to homecoming to watch my stepson march in the alumni band and for the postgame band show, and we were done by the middle of the third quarter. i didn't earn any badges this time, that's for sure.
|3 weeks 3 days ago||absolutely, completely not true.||
the next time michigan fans give a coach a hard time for playing too aggressively will be the first. BECAUSE IT DOESN'T HAPPEN.
just once, i'd like to see us keep our foot on the gas when we have a massive talent advantage.
|4 weeks 2 days ago||me too.||
...back in the old days, i sent my share of smartassed emails - never to clients, but to project team members. i finally learned my lesson - if you have to vent, go ahead and write it all out, then delete it and start over. usually that breaks the edges off and you get in much less trouble. brandon has apparently never learned that one.
|4 weeks 2 days ago||i'm not even angry anymore.||
|4 weeks 3 days ago||wait.||
parts of the fanbase freaked out when it appeared he'd come out on brandon's side, but now that he's on "our side" we're all for his opinion?
if he'd given a billion dollars, would he get to make the final decision and hire the next guy? what's the cutoff here? i'm looking for a specific dollar amount.
|4 weeks 3 days ago||interestingly,||
i have the same reaction to this stephen ross comment as i did to his previous, specifically: "what the hell does stephen ross know about the operations of an athletic department, either on a day-to-day or strategic level?"
the shorter version: "stephen ross needs to shut the hell up."
|4 weeks 3 days ago||it's official.||
brady hoke IS bobby williams:
he sealed the comparison with the "i think i was aware that something happened, but i'm not fully aware" comment. someone please tell me how this is any different than bobby williams' famous "i don't know" comment. i submit that it's exactly the same, only more mealymouthed.
also, i could watch the scooter fail gif all day. i just might.
|5 weeks 1 day ago||red zone efficiency.||
also an admirable goal. so, since we are currently EIGHTH IN THE COUNTRY (right behind florida and 2-6 new mexico state) we should be good to go, right?
FWIW, i generally agree with what i take as your main point, that there are probably more-significant factors to track on a game-by-game basis. but time of possession is also not completely meaningless, either. in our case, time of possession was predictive in 4 of our games, only slightly better than flipping a coin, but i suspect that the actual correlation is higher than that. i'd love to see actual numbers nationwide.
|5 weeks 1 day ago||yes, they are.||
...so 90s. who cares about wins or turnovers or kicking game or winning the 4th quarter or...i'm sorry, what was i saying? i think my brain just melted, trying to pretend those things don't matter.
i'm sure there's absolutely no correlation between time of possession and wins, either.
|5 weeks 1 day ago||vandalism...||
...sucks balls whether it's for your team or against it. i hope that none of our fans are thinking about retaliating in some stupid way.
the best revenge on sparty fans is leaving them in their shithole town of juggalos as we drive away.
|5 weeks 2 days ago||i wouldn't argue with any of those...||
from the three replies:
|5 weeks 3 days ago||in beilein we trust...||
...i for one will be stunned if every one of these guys doesn't make a leap this year. the man is an absolute genius and both finding AND developing talent. is there anyone who hasn't t markedly improved on his watch, injuries aside?
|6 weeks 9 hours ago||me too.||
i'm not in the target demographic either.
the purdue thing mystifies me as well...and they are jumping in with both feet. check out the upcoming "crowdsourced" helmet design: http://petapixel.com/2014/06/04/purdue-football-team-crowdsourcing-helme...
|6 weeks 9 hours ago||FWIW,||
As it happens, USC is breaking out some alternate chrome helmets this weekend.
I will never, ever understand why schools with iconic, instantly-recognizable uniforms are willing to screw with them in exchange for what can only be marginal revenue. Michigan, Notre Dame, now USC. The hell?
|6 weeks 1 day ago||des morgan...||
i have to say that i don't think about nfl prospects for our guys all that much, but morgan seems to me like david harris: not as supremely talented as some other guys, but a smart player and a major thumper. what nfl team can't use someone like that?
ALSO, i am one of the premier bitchers about the piped-in RAWK music...that dennis norfleet requested, got, and grooved to piped-in 'atomic dog' makes me a) happy as hell and b) a little less strident about it. these kids today and their rocks and rolls, i guess it ain't all bad.
|6 weeks 2 days ago||yes, apparently.||
...that brady hoke. he doesn't miss a trick on the ol' clock management, does he? nails it every time.
apparently it was an execution thing, or some such nonsense.
|6 weeks 3 days ago||AND...||
if they DID think he was a better option, they should have stuck with him the following week.
|6 weeks 3 days ago||oh, that's just ridiculous.||
the chances of penn state giving up a touchdown on a turnover in that situation are vanishingly small to the point of impossibility, and you know it.
i'll re-ask my question - have you ever, even once, heard of the offensive team giving up a defensive touchdown in that situation? nope.
i'll ask a couple more - did you say "oh boy, penn state is going to try a hail mary"? of course you didn't. what do you think greg mattison was thinking about that play? think he was excited that he had to defend one more play before halftime? of course he wasn't.
|6 weeks 3 days ago||i'm sorry, but...||
there's not really any risk in trying a hail-mary, right?
i mean, i guess we're going to argue every single opinion, but i can't think of a single time that a hail mary attempt went bad in a game-changing way, and i mean ever. if you can point out an exception, i'll shut up on this, but let's be serious here. there are very, very few coaches who wouldn't at least fire it at the end zone with a guy who can get it there.
|6 weeks 3 days ago||agreed...||
...at least re: bellomy. i thought he would be better than he turned out to be, or at least tiny bit serviceable.
that said - he was something like 3 of 15 with 4 picks against nebraska...that's some historic overmatched-ness, and it happened in week 8 or 9. i have a hard time giving the coaching staff a pass on that - how competent could he possibly have looked in practice, compared to that? and if he DID look good in practice they sure jumped off that ship in a hurry when he stunk it up...seriously - nobody looked at him in practice and wondered whether he could fill in when denard was (inevitably) knocked out of a game? ever? they must have just shrugged it off, right?
of course they did, because that's, you know, what this staff does.
|6 weeks 3 days ago||understood...||
...i didn't have much of an issue with the length of the replay, more with the length of gilmore blathering about it. 'course, at that point every word he said felt like a lifetime. worst ever.
|6 weeks 3 days ago||nope.||
yes, denard was the QB...a somewhat injury-prone QB.
there was absolutely no doubt that he would get knocked out at some point during that season, but the staff said, that's okay, we'll go with russell bellomy when that happens.
