September 8, 1984 at Michigan
Miami (2-0) had just beaten No. 1 ranked Auburn and No. 17 Florida in successive weeks on the road.
Miami was ranked No. 1 in both polls, playing at No. 14 Michigan (0-0) and their untested sophomore QB Jim Harbaugh.
Result: MICHIGAN 22, Miami 14
Johnson's '84 Hurricanes never recovered. Finished the season 7-5, losing by a butthair to UCLA in the Fiesta Bowl.
Johnson's team was destroyed by rival FSU 3-38 in the Orange Bowl (home stadium for Miami). Hurricanes then proceeded to lose their last three games by a total of 6 points.
But it was the loss at Michigan that brought reality crashing down on Jimmy Johnson in his first year, one year after Schnellenberger had the Canes at 11-1 and national champions.
So digging at Michigan and Harbaugh is completely understandable.
The same thing almost happened again in 1988 when Michigan led Miami 30-14 at one point, endangering another No. 1 ranking for the Hurricanes. But Johnson escaped Ann Arbor with a 31-30 win on a Carlos Huerta FG.
Yeah, he hates Michigan and Ann Arbor in general, and for good reasons.

|2 weeks 1 day ago||The "Wheatley Experience" probably affected Mr. Jackson.||
The last three Michigan running backs coaches were
Tirrell Burton, 1970-1991
Fred Jackson, 1991-2014
Tyrone Wheatley, 2015 - ?
Tyrone Wheatley was a freshman tailback in 1991 during Tirrell Burton's final year at Michigan. He did not redshirt despite being third on the depth chart behind top-recruited tailback Ricky Powers, Jesse Johnson.
So Wheatley went through a RB coaching transition himself, and is probably one of the reasons Fred Jackson developed his reknowned eloquence about RB speed. Wheatley was one of the first and obviously most talented tailbacks that Fred Jackson had ever coached. At that time Tyrone Wheatley was the first tailback Fred Jackson was associated with who gained 1,000+ yards. As Co-OC at Wisconsin under Dave McClain in 1985, junior tailback Larry Emery gained 1,000+ yards rushing. Corey Harris at Vandy rushed for 1,000+yards in 1991, but Jackson was a QB coach that year. Other than that, bumpkis in coaching stints at Purdue under Texas Longhorns-exile, retread, and pro set-to-option transitioner, Fred Akers.
Michigan has always had some great running backs, but few were "home run" hitters like Tyrone Wheatley was on kickoffs, punt returns and 38 bellies.
Either way the "Wheatley Experience", including three straight 1,100+ yard rushing seasons and 44 TDs, must have been embossed on Fred Jackson's brain and never wore off. It probably explains the extent of his RB hyperbole uttered afterward.

Michigan OL should improve under Drevno, as players did at USD, Stanford and the 49ers.
He's also a West Coast native, so Drevno can help Michigan with California recruiting (not that Harbaugh wouldn't be a slam dunk recruiter out West too).Long tenure and strong working chemistry with Harbaugh as what needs to be built/constructed for the final product. In my view Drevno is as solid as you would want for an OL coach.
I think Morton is in a similar mold. Harbaugh liked what he did with the 49ers. Morton was an OC for Pete Carroll at USC after Sarkisian took the Washington job, but was not particularly great as an OC (9-4 overall, 5-4 in PAC10) that year, including a 21-55 drubbing to Harbaugh's Stanford Cardinal. Morton's best work has been in the NFL as 49ers WR coach with dudes like Boldin, Crabtree, etc.
I guess landing Morton would mean no Soup Campbell.
Campbell was a DB/WR at Michigan and then WR coach for many years at Iowa. Also Campbell and Harbaugh were teammates, so there's that.

Why be remotely associated with that failure? Yes, its the Univ. of Michigan and David Brandon, but there are a lot of great marketing jobs out there that involve building and enhancing brands, not alienating the loyal "customer base" and implementing obvious bad ideas.
Also, it's really more simple than any of that. The reactions above largely stem from his choice of words for the University of Michigan brand and Denard Robinson. This was really unfortunate, and seemingly in alignment with the perception that Lochdogg was rather dismissive of UM athletes in general, and surprisingly unaware (for a marketing professional) about the value and promise of the rest of the Univ. of MIchigan ecosystem (fans, players, alumni, tradition). Great marketing also involves knowing what not to say and what not to do, and letting awesome, genuine things remain awesome and genuine.

The problems with Michigan QB play has many complicating factors:
Except for QB youth, most of these issues go away next year when and if Harbaugh comes in.
I have my strong doubts whether he does come.
But if he does, then Michigan's QB position will for the first time since Rod Smith, be in very, very good hands, despite player youth.
Morris, Speight and Malzone will likely be UM's options at QB in 2015.
It's not ideal, but no way is it 2008 bad.

|6 weeks 6 days ago||Agreed||
I really like Herman.
He's my No. 2 behind Harbaugh, because if Michigan is going through another painful transition anyway, then it might as well get a young guy who's really competent on the X's and O's and a kick ass recruiter.
Herman's best QB was Chase Clement at Rice, especially the jump in performance in 2007 and 2008, when Herman was OC/QB coach:
As for rushing, about 10 attemps a game for Clement. Not a lot but enough to keep opposing defenses honest, which is what you want.
FWIW Chase Clement was 6'-0" and 215 lbs. Malzone is 6'-1" and 203 lbs and not a statue.
Lastly, this whole pro-set vs. spread philosphy argument is interesting, but getting kind of tiresome.
It's the one thing I'm actually not looking forward too with Harbaugh. But even Harbaugh's Stanford Cardinal ran some zone read out of the shotgun.
When Bo came to Michigan he brought with him the FullHouse T backfield and Power I sets (also 3 back) and not a whole lot of passing. Michigan football emulated its enemy Ohio, the most successful Big Ten team in the 1960s (51 wins, only 14 losses) in almost every aspect of the game (offense, defense, punting, fullbacks).
So with this, I mean, don't look now but Urban freaking Meyer is 24-1 vs. Big Ten opponents in 3 years doing one thing: Spread and shred. Twenty-four and one.
Even venerated Woody Hayes, who hated passing with a passion, had 10 Big Ten losses in his first 3 years as HC.
Hayes and Schembechler both embraced the option series that was sweeping the nation thanks to Emory Bellard, Darryl Royal, Bill Yeoman and Mal Moore, and Ohio and Michigan decimated opponents with it, with mobile QBs and their big OLs.
So I just don't understand the traditionalist Pro-Setters at all in the context of Michigan football, other than recency bias.
Bo had more wins than Mo and Lloyd combined by 1986. Michigan didn't run a pro-set that year either, and Harbaugh was the freaking QB.
It seems to me that if anything Michigan football ought to look at what Ohio has been doing offensively and just copy that. It's not original, but it's also not that hard. And FWIW, JT Barrett, spread option quarterback, just threw for 2,800+ yards and 34 fucking touchdowns as a true freshman. So would we really care how a Michigan QB achieved that? I think not.

So of course even paying subscribers wait like every body else. Or they would let a little info trickle out, or use some cryptic language they thought was cute, but was just hokey (NTH) and dumb. And then they'd joke about how funny that all was, but that they really couldn't say any more at the time for things that weren't really that substantial, like walk-on getting a scholarship. The fact that Mora has gone 9-5, 10-3 and 9-3 at UCLA is nothing short of fucking insane.
Bruins were coached for 20 years by Terry Donahue with 5 PAC-10 titles. Before that they had Dick Vermeil for 2 years only and before that it was Pepper Rodgers.
After Donahue flamed out her career in 1995, UCLA football has been pretty much your case study in mediocrity followed by failure. The Bob Toledo 1997 and 1998 seasons are the only major highlights.
Bob Toledo (49-32) - 2 PAC 10 titles
Karl Dorrell (35-27) - no PAC 10 titles
Rick Neuheisel (UCLA's own Rose Bowl QB "Come Home") (21-29) - no PAC-10 titles
You have to understand the shear futility that has been UCLA football in order to appreciate what Jim Mora has achieved here.
Not even Terry Donahue managed to rack up three straight back-to-back seasons of 9+ wins at UCLA.

Honestly, I don't know how Oregon State can look at what happened at Michigan the last 4 years and say "oh yeah, that's the guy for our program" unless they want a coach with stratospheric level values but diminishing wins.
With Riley, Oregon State got a former OC/QB coach from USC, with x's and o's competence and a knack for developing talented players. Riley had a clue of what he was doing.
Hoke is a great recruiter, and DL coach, but that's about it. Everything else he left to his assistants, which can be good, but at UM this didn't help Hoke. Hoke was at SDSU for two years (13-12). He's 78-70 all-time. Wake up and see this for what it is - a C-grade hire. And they know it.

noun, noun: fiasco; plural noun: fiascos
definition: a thing that is a complete failure, especially in a ludicrous or humiliating way.
I guess it is a "fiasco" for Michigan in the sense that firing Brady Hoke became self-evident and necessary, and a huge contingent of UM fans, media and alumni supported the guy, and are now "humiliated" by being so wrong about Hoke's coaching ability and W-L performance.
At the same time, if Michigan lands a top prospect like Harbaugh, Miles or Mullen, I'm not convinced "fiasco" applies as much this time.
The good news:
We'll soon see because there's plenty of time on the clock for this to be a real "coaching fiasco" (again) or a "coaching triumph".
It's still hiliarious that there was a time when Brady Hoke AND Kirk Ferentz were on the radar for the Michigan job.

Gee, by "Lloyd Faction" do you really mean the "Rudyard Kipling Fan Club" of 3 people who accidentally set their books and bifocals down long enough to form a tactical unit to sabotage the UM coaching search so that Hackett would have no choice but contract Mike DeBord or Ron English?
|7 weeks 5 days ago||Comparing the two is not really fair at this point, but||
Urban Meyer has been way more successful coaching at college level (and Division I) than Harbaugh.
Bowling Green (2 years, 17-6)
Utah (2 years, 22-2)
Florida (6 years, 65-16)
Ohio State (3 years, 35-3)
Meyer (139-26, 0.8424) just wins football games.
Harbaugh is 58-27 in college (USD, Stanford) and 43-16-1 in the NFL (101-43-1), .6965
In coaching performance, Meyer blows Harbaugh's doors off, so "OSU getting Meyer" > "If Michigan gets Harbaugh", IMO. I don't remember Ohio's second choice from Meyer, but it was probably a major drop off in chutzpah and performance.
My other opinion is that this question is moot, as I do not believe Harbaugh is coming to Michigan.

I fucking knew it.

Sort of speckled. Hopefully Wolverines are making a comeback, literally and figuratively.

"You can't judge the success or failure of a search firm without knowing the other candidates that were presented to the client. They don't force the client to make the decision. The fact that this firm has so many high profile clients is rather impressive."
|7 weeks 5 days ago||LOL this thread. Obviously a||
LOL this thread. Obviously a lot people don't comprehend what "50-50" means and have failed to prepare accordingly. It could be worse you guys! We could be hiring McElwain, or be locked in on....wait for it....Bret Bielema. My uninformed and edu-ma-cated guess is this: it's the wife. Never underestimate the wife in such decisions. Many men choose misery over happiness and dreams. This happens every goddamned day. You can watch this event on your own. Just take 10 minutes and go to any shopping mall with a jewelry store. "Every gift begins with Kay!" Nobody is warning these guys.
|7 weeks 6 days ago||WTF you mean by "permanent AD job"?||
It would be a great outcome for Michigan to land Jim Harbaugh.
After David Brand-ON, maybe we should just cool it with any "AD for life" ideas?
|7 weeks 6 days ago||It's the least the 49ers organization could do||
They owe the University of Michigan a huge favor for Walt Downing, Bubba Paris and Dwight Hicks, not to mention owing the entire world of television viewers a massive apology for unleashing Randy Cross on us all as a "football analyst". Good God.
|7 weeks 6 days ago||WTF Nebraska??????||
Tom Herman (Ohio St. OC) is the logical choice for the HC of Huskers. Or Scott Frost (Oregon OC). A very strong third choice, though older, has to be Craig Bohl (Wyoming).
Bielema is a bad choice. Bielema just went 3-9 and 6-6 at Arkansas. Good Christ, if you're zeroing in on Bielema then you might as well bring back Frank Solich (Ohio HC).

Of course he left Joe Namath and the Jets 3-10 in 1976.
|7 weeks 6 days ago||Defense is the only think 49ers have going for them now||
4th in the NFL in total defense.
Offensively their QB play has been substandard since the bye week.
They are ranked 22nd in the league now in total offense (32 teams). Not good nor what you would expect from an NFL team by December. Their last two games are at home, which probably helps.
|7 weeks 6 days ago||This is going to take a while||
The 49ers are going to demolish the Oakland Raiders (1-11) this weekend. They'll be 8-5 then.
Then Harbaugh's team has to run the gauntlet vs. some pretty fine NFL teams like Seattle (8-4), San Diego (8-4) and Arizona (9-3). I would not be surprised to see the 49ers lose all of these games and finish 8-8. It sort of depends to the extent Harbaugh has "lost the team" and whether any of his injured stars can return to the line-up.
If the 49ers do indeed go down a predictable slide between December 14 and December 28 weekends, the pressure is going to be ratcheted up big time re: Harbaugh disclosing his future intentions. Of course he's also a pro at not answering questions at press conferences.
