I remember watching a recording of a classic Michigan football game from the 1970s where Keith Jackson and Ara Parseghian were announcing a football game in Michigan Stadium on ABC, Michigan was running roughshod over the opponent, and the subject of Michigan's Running Backs Coach, Tirrel Burton came up.
Parseghian shared that Burton played running back from him at Miami (NTM) and explained how Burton had "made me a hero down there".
Burton played running back in college football on undefeated and one loss teams in the 1950s that weren't invited to bowl games because of black players on the roster and southern States that hosted the bowl games didn't take to kindly to this in their own "southern social customs".
One thing is for sure, Burton recruited and coached some of the most talented running backs in college football history for one of the most run-centric offensive philosophies ever.
Billy Taylor, Gordon Bell, Rob Lytle, Russell Davis, Harlan Huckleby, Roosevelt Smith, Butch Woolfolk, Stan Edwards, Larry Ricks, Rick Rogers, Jamie Morris, Jon Vaughn, Tyrone Wheatley and many others.
He was also associated with so many great coaches and players during some of the best years of Michigan football success.

2005 - 25th - Walt Harris - C. Marinelli (3) (just one OL player recruited !!!!!!)

2009 - 17th - Jim Harbaugh - K. Wilkes (3), K. Danser (3)
2010 - 25th - Jim Harbaugh - Underwood (3), Bonnell (3), Yankey (3)
Still interesting that:

Michigan took three (3) OL in 2016: Bredeson, Onwenu, Spanellis
Michigan is taking six (6!!!) OL in 2017: Ruiz, Filiaga, Herbert, Hall, Steuber, Honigford,
OL still seems really thin - 15 guys even when we include returning Cole, Kugler and Beatty.
Why didn't Michigan make OL more of a priority in the 2016 class?
Another year (2018) of solid OL recruits should bolster things up nicely though for Michigan.
Also, won't 2017 also include WR 4-star recruit Brad Hawkins (2016, back from prep school)?

1. Blue chin straps were long overdue. Great addition.Never understood why it took Michigan so long (10+ years?) to change that. Made helmets even better. Much more aggressive.
2. Wasn't a big fan of the USC-like jersey numerals. I always preferred Michigan's 1971-1981 jersey numerals. But oh well. It worked.
3. The dark Navy and maize shoes were a nice change, though I prefer black shoes. I liked the blue socks for home games and the white socks for away. Worked well.
4. Hoping Michigan returns to maize britches for an away game or two next year.
5. Wolverine helmet awards were badass as always. Harbaugh!
6. Basketball uniforms sucked. Michigan should return to the 1985-1986 versions, which were freaking badass.

Best coaches were Jeff Tedford (2002-2012) and Pappy Waldorf (1947-1956).
Sonny Dykes was 20-30 at Cal in 4 years. That's not enough time in my opinion given' the situation left by Tedford.
Yes, transitioning from Hal Mumme's Air Raid over to Niumatalolo's triple option wishbone attack would take a couple years to install.
Not sure of this, but I think the last team to actually run the wishbone offense in the PAC-12 (then the PAC-10) was Jerry Pettibone at Oregon State (1991-1996). The result was no winning seasons and horrible results.
Interestingly Brady Hoke was the Oregon State DL coach under Dave Kragthorpe (1989-1990) and then Pettibone (1991-1994).

|16 weeks 2 days ago||The income of a college football official is||
Now most college football officials do so only as a part-time vocation.
So there may be a valid argument for:
1. Taking officiating out of the control of conferences and establishing a national associaition of officials not affiliated with leagues of teams or regions.
2. Paying officials more, insulating them more from malfeasance (bias from corruption, gambling, betting, etc.)
3. Insisting on their full-time devotion to officiating work, continuous, year around, ongoing training and perfecting their skills, especially for college football games with mulit-million dollar outcomes at stake.
Officiating was a huge problem in 2015 college football too:
|16 weeks 2 days ago||Yeah, it's pretty much un-American censorship||
Officials cannot be criticized because they are officials. If their fuck-ups are not respected by coaches, players and fans, then the whole facade of not being a money-grabbing casino operation is lost.
Jim Harbaugh is not the first college football coach to rage quit the edict forbidding criticism of officials.
Urban Meyer @Florida $30K
Mike Leach, Washington St. $10K
Jimbo Fisher, FSU $20K
Pat Narduzzi, Pitt $10K
Mike McIntyre, Colorado $10K
Brian Polian, Nevada $10K
Bill Mallory (1991, Indiana - $10K after Michigan loss)
James Franklin Penn State ($0K)
College football officiating needs to be nationalized, as the athletic conferences cannot handle it professionally. They handle officiating just like they handle criminal investigations. Poorly and incompetently.
Research indicates high levels of variation and bias in referee calls by conference, especially ACC and Big East conferences.
A national, full-time college football officials association would not eliminate bias, but it would level the field nationally and set guidelines for contentious rivalry games to go the extra mile to eliminate bias.

24 or 16 or 8 team playoff and be done with it.
It all ends up at the same destiniation on January 7th - a championship game for all the marbles. And these FCS football players are student athletes too.
The only excuse why it doesn't happen is because of corporate interests in meaningless, money grab bowl games at either sunny (Florida, California, Hawaii, Arizona, Bahamas) or depressing locations like Boise, Montgomery or Detroit.
We already pay a high price for Chic-Fil-A, Sony, Goodyear and Allstate to annoy college football consumers ever 10 minutes of programming.
It'll never happen because Delany and his ilk hates you and me and football players more than anything alive.
|16 weeks 2 days ago||What about JT Barrett returning?||
He is only a junior. He had another very good year and the team's record of 11-1 speaks for itself.
But I sense the kid left a lot on the field as well struggling the throw consistently well this fall.
Do you think he stays for his 4th year at Ohio State? I could see him deciding to stay if the NFL evaluation says so. But NFL QB talent being what it is - namely horrible - scout will probably look kindly on the entire JT Barrett package as a junior (big, fast, elusive, slippery, lethal at times short and deep with the right receiver talent, etc.)
|16 weeks 2 days ago||I take solace in the fact that Harbaugh will||
never, ever forget this.
What I expected to happen, happened.
There were comments on this blog earlier in the week regarding the refs for this game, and how that would likely not go Michigan's way, and then sure as shit....
I thought the defense would play very well, and they did.
I thought the offense would play poorly vs. Ohio State defense, and with three turnovers that gifted Ohio State 21 points, well that also happened.
Going to the Orange Bowl is great, and I'm hopeful Michigan wears the home blue uniforms when they go.
But another loss to Ohio State is more painful this time. Michigan is 10-2 and probably should be 12-0 and ranked 2nd right now. So close, and yet so far.
Next year Michigan has to rebuild most of the DL, the LBs and secondary.
The offense will have a new OL and receiver corps, but an experienced 3-star QB (Speight), Brandon Peters and Dylan McCaffery.
Future Michigan football is not going to be dull, that's for sure.

True, my comments don't contain irrational exhuberance after witnessing Michigan play horribly at Iowa 7-4, and then barely beating a 5-6 Indiana at home by 10 points, scoring 31 points in two games against what everyone insisted were inferior opponents to Michigan.
I agree with you though that Ohio State's QB situation, plus Michigan quarterback situation plus away game at Ohio Stadium are not exactly running in Michigan's favor right now.
Hopefully Speight plays the entire game. But even if he does, Michigan has to play a perfect game against the most talented team they've ever played this year, and the best defensive team Michigan has faced since Wisconsin.
I'm hopeful. But with recent Michigan offensive performance I'm just unconvinced.
There's no way to stop Ohio State. All you can do is slow them down enough to outscore them.

That 2006 defense walked into the Horseshoe in Columbusranked No.1 the country also.

I don't know what to expect this year except more of the same.
The 2016 secondary is probably better than the 2006 secondary, I think.
But this Ohio State passing offense is the most lethal and efficient thatMichigan has faced: 64% completion rate (1st), 26 TDs (1st), 4 INTs (1st), 17 sacks (3rd least). They are already this good and very young.
I like Michigan's chances against the Ohio State OL, to reign in Weber and Samuels. But unless Barrett is under wraps this is going to be a long day.
It will probably go like OSU @ Wisconsin
I think Michigan succeeds to hold down Weber and Samuel to less than 50 yards rushing, but will not be able stop Barrett rushing and throwing for big plays.
|17 weeks 15 hours ago||Strength vs. Strength||
Ohio State's #21 ranked offense vs. Michigan's #1 ranked defense
Ohio State's #4 ranked defense vs. Michigans #38 ranked offense
Game is in Columbus where Urban Meyer has lost only twice in last 5 years (vs Va. Tech in 2014, vs. MSU 2015).
Michigan's starting QB is injured/not 100%.
Ohio State's defense wins their matchup against the Michigan offense (pretty much its running game) and will be able to ignore the Michigan passing attack.
Don Brown will give Ohio State plenty of fits, but over 4 quarters they will score touchdowns and probably won't have to outscore Michigan by very much to win.
I think Michigan plays very well defensively, and might even control Barrett's rushing and passing, and keep the points scoring respectable.
But so much of Michigan's offense relies on the Michigan passing attack to keep defenses honest.

|17 weeks 1 day ago||Agreed||
Barrett's rushing ability has been invaluable in big games, especially Indiana, Wiscy and MSU.
MSU last week was no exception.
It's weird to watch. He's big, fast, elusive and slippery all at once.
And Michigan hasn't really faced any QBs quite like him this season.
I'm optimistic that Don Brown will have the team well-prepared for Barrett to keep him pressured and his running under control, and force Weber and Samuel to beat Michigan with their legs and hands. Not much of choice really.
If Speight returns, I like Michigan's chances If he doesn't, well.....oh look, there's turkey leftovers, pumpkin pie and beer in the fridge!
|17 weeks 1 day ago||I think Michigan throws a lot more||
Harbaugh has already proven he has balls of brass when it comes to throwing on anyone.
If Speight plays, though I kind of doubt that he can, Michigan is going to shell shock that secondary. If he doesn't play, Michigan is toast and Ohio will load the box with great success.
Ohio State has a good rushing defense (4th in the league).
Buckeyes have only played two manballish teams: Wisconsin and MSU and were outgained and on the ropes in both contests.
In all of Ohio State's tight games, it was QB JT Barrett has destroyed the opposition with his legs and slipperness. He's a big, fast kid that just won't go down:
Indiana - 137 yards rushing, 1 TD
@Wisconsin - 92 yards rushing, 2 TDs
Northwestern - 71 yards rushing, 0 TDs, but 223 yards passing
@MSU - 105 yrds rushing , 0 TDs
Michigan is by far the toughest defense Ohio State has faced all year - rushing D and passing D. And UM kept rushing QB damage to minimum (vs. Colorado, vs. UCF, vs. Maryland, etc.) because the UM offense got the lead early and piled it on, forcing opponents to throw.
This is why Ohio State fans are nervous. It's a little different than last year.
Theire team is stocked with very high talent players, but it's a comparatively young team, they've had to throw games on the shoulders of Barrett. That has worked (except @ PSU). I don't know whether that works vs. Michigan this time around, especially if Ohio OL is holding and giving up sacks in the game.
Michigan is much more experienced across the board - lines, backers, secondary and backfield. It's just so happens that QB is the all important but most rickety piece.

But with Downtown Brown and Harbaugh, Michigan always has a chance.

Of course, against really stout defenses, if you live by the sword, then you gonna die by the sword.
Some teams have had good success running the ball against Michigan - MSU, Maryland and Iowa for example. But Michigan usually adjusted pretty well.
I like Michigan's chances to keep the game lower scoring.
I don't like Michigan's chances on offense unless Speight is slinging it downfield to keep the Buckeyes LBs and secondary honest.

|18 weeks 13 hours ago||No.||
O'Korn is more mobile than Speight. He's faster as well. But the delta in skills sets between the two is insignificant. Both UM QBs have Howitzer arms and are more dangerous throwing than evading and running.
Even at Houston under the gunslinging offense of Doug Meacham (now co-OC at TCU), John O'Korn WAS NOT a legitimate rushing weapon for which opponents had to game plan. See below.
O'Korn is no Rick Leach, Steve Smith or Drew Henson.
So regardless of who is under center for Michigan, Ohio State needs to cover UM receivers, TE's and take on the offensive line to apply QB pressure and stop the run.Easier said than done, but a 5-4 Iowa managed to do it quite easily at home, so I imagine Luke Fickell is emboldened and confident that Buckeyes can do the same again in Columbus.
|18 weeks 17 hours ago||Come back here with my wins!||
|18 weeks 2 days ago||I think O'Korn will run the Harbaughffense as is||
Can't forget that while Speight won the starting job over the summer, Harbaugh said multiple times that was very pleased with both quarterback's work ethic, playbook understanding and performance in practice and preparation.
That said, O'Korn's skill set is different, which might prompt Harbaugh and Fisch to consider some nuances to the call sheet, including yes, some zone read option plays, QB draws, etc. to keep defenses more honest than they were with Speight.
But O'Korn is surrounded by a cast of very high talented players at RB, WR and TE who will be playing on Sundays.
More important than reading defensive ends and jooking them out of their jocks for a 5 or 11 yard gain on the ground will be O'Korn improving the timing and delivery on passes with Butt, Darboh, Chesson and the backs.
I'm pretty sure that timing is already there and won't need much in-game testing. O'Korn will just run the plays.
I think it will surprise people the confidence Harbaugh bestows upon O'Korn and lets that kid gunsling it downfield as if nothing changed.
|18 weeks 2 days ago||Feel bad for Speight, but he's in some good company||
A lot of people are too young to know this, but Michigan has a rather illustrious history of infamous starting QB injuries, especially shoulder injuries, which affected a great many things for the history and outcomes of the football program. Hopefully Speight makes a quick recovery.

|18 weeks 5 days ago||Iowa is gonna die||
Yeah, my gut tells me that both Ferentz and Greg Davis will drink a 6 pack of Red Bull before kickoff and the Hawkeyes will inexplicably start out hot, drive the field and score to take an early lead 7-0, to which enough people on interwebs will be outraged, want to drop kick a puppy because this can't happen, Michigan is 9-0 and ranked No. 2.
Except this won't happen.
Like all of the games Iowa has played before this season against football teams with a pulse, it is Iowa's opponents who score first. Then opponents take the lead. Then they keep it.
Sure, from time to time, Iowa might tie things up. They might even take a temporary lead by a FG or so. But it never holds. They can't capitalize on opponent mistakes and shifts in game momentum, like a fumble. Iowa always seems to find ways to shoot itself in teh foot, let opponents back in the game and then re-capitalize.
Iowa's offensive performance should be similar to Wisconsin game.
Iowa's defensive performance will be worse.
Nathan Stanley will be Iowa's QB at the end of the game.

|18 weeks 6 days ago||Iowa has some great skilled position players||
in WRs McCarron and Smith, TE Kittle and RBs Wadley/Daniels. But that OL is a problem. And Greg Davis and Kirk Ferentz tends to make matters worse.
Still I would not be surprised if Iowa had a hot start in Kinnick Stadium Saturday night.
Maybe a 7-0 lead or 10-0 lead.
They won't be able to maintain it though.
In home games against better teams, Iowa rarely scores first and usually found themselves playing catch up or struggling to move the ball. They never get around to capitalizing on game momentum. Screw ups and poor offense keep competitors in the game. Iowa just can't dominate.
If Michigan gets a two score lead in this game, it's curtains.
Lastly, Beathard was sacked 29 times last year over 14 games.
In 2016, he's already been sacked 24 times in 9 games, over half of the sacks (14) took place right in Kinnick Stadium games. This just kills drives and momentum for an already lackluster offense that doesn't really score a lot.
Michigan is probably going bludgeon Iowa, and I would not be at all surprised if they shut the Hawkeyes out.

You still have to somehow include the pervasive holding penalty non-calls on the Ohio State OL.
When you do, that's probably worth 7 pts or more.
Sorry, but you have to build that into the model. It's kind of a rule for games in Columbus.
|19 weeks 2 days ago||Iowa is weird||
On the one hand, they have two outstanding running backs in both Wadley and Daniels, but they somehow only rank 12th in the BIG10 in rushing. Makes no sense. It's like their OC Greg Davis keeps forgetting to use them.
They have a veteran QB (Beatherd) and 3 starters along the OL, but unfortunately lost their best TE Vandenberg for the season. Iowa's passing offense is ranked 11th in the BIG10 as a result.
The Iowa OL is not improving. Iowa QB CJ Beatherd was sacked:
4 times @ Penn State
2 times vs. Wisconsin
3 times @ Purdue
1 time vs. Minnesota
6 times(!!!) vs Northwestern
The Iowa OL is a big problem. I mean, does anyone not believe Michigan is going to eat CJ Beatherd alive on a national TV Saturday night?
I'll go so far as to predict that viewers are going to see backup QB Nathan Stanley by the 4th quarter of this one.
And the Iowa receivers are not helping Beatherd.
TE George Kittle is a huge drop off in production from Vandenberg. Sure-handed WR Riley McCarron is a life saver. But he's their best receiver and will blanketed all night by Mr. Lewis. That leaves Jerminic Smith who is fast and dangerous, but has 19 receptions all year (30 yrd/game) and 2 TDs.
It's not going to be enough.
By the end of the PSU game, Iowa's defense was completely gassed and had nothing left in the tank. PSU left at least 10 to 17 points on the field in that game.
Ferentz always has Iowa up for the Michigan game. He breaks his broken-record bad tendencies, poor decisions and Zookisms on purpose for the Wolverines it seems.
Except this time he's not coaching against Lloyd or RichRod or Brady Hoke. There won't be a let up. There won't be punts unless absolutely necessary, which is going to be really hard for a guy like Ferentz to digest.
I could be wrong, but I believe this time Michigan might dole out one of the most humiliating defeats of Iowa in a long time at Kinnick Stadium, possibly since 1978.

|19 weeks 2 days ago||Ohio State's offensive line is atrocious at holding||
The Ohio State vs. Nebraska game on Saturday night showed once again pervasive, blatant holding by Ohio State's center, guards and tackles throughout the game on Nebraska's DL and pass-rushing LBs throughout the game. The officials of that game let it slide.
I don't know whether officials rotate by state and by game. I'm hoping that they already do, in order to delete some of the potential confirmation bias or other biases that might form in one's head over time.
But there's definitely something amiss her with MSU week-to-week.
Offensively, Ohio State is one of the most frequently penalized teams in the league behind Minnesota, tied with ILL, MSU and Maryland.
Let's see what happens next weekend at Kinnick Stadium. I half expect a bundge of no calls on holding, and some bullshit targeting penalty.
