|4 days 15 hours ago||Well, Ohio State is not that great in Run Defense||
Ohio State's run defense is 30th in the land (194 YPG). By contrast, Michigan's is 4th in the country (100.2 YPG). I was not surprised that MSU could move the ball on the ground, with their OL healthy and some good backs. Indiana did the same with a banged up TB Howard.
In pass defense Ohio State is on even footing with Michigan (ranked 4th nationally, 163 YPG) - Ohio State is ranked 5th (164 YPG).
My biggest criticism of Tim Beck has been his reluctance this year to emphasize the quarterback as a runner compared to Tom Herman, who always retained this a staple of the OSU attack. But on Saturday, I was wrong. Beck called for a lot of carries for QB Barrett, but the outcomes were poor: 15 carries, only 44 yards.
What seems to be missing from Ohio State's attack is the high-temp and razz-ma-tazz stuff that made Urban Meyer famous at Utah and Florida. What's worse is, there's just no excuse. I mean Jesus Christ, the Buckeyes have JT Barrett, Ezekiel Elliott, Jalin Marshall and Braxton freaking Miller in the starting lineup. That's equal to or better than what Urban ever had a Florida.
Something's not right there.

|4 days 18 hours ago||Meh, facts show this: Offensively Michigan is below average||
versus their conference peers and nationally.
After 11 games, Michigan is ranked 72nd nationally in total offense.
Rushing offense is ranked 8th this year (161 YPG) vs. 7th last year (163 YPG)
Passing offense is ranked 7th this year (227 YPG) vs. 11th last year (170 YPG).
So Michigan has not really improved in the rushing department at all YOY.
Biggest improvement has been in passing offense with Harbaugh schemes, ice-water-in-the-veins-Rudock and some halfway decent OL blocking.

|2 weeks 2 days ago||Dude, that is really cool||
Seriously, you should send that to coach Harbaugh.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||I disagree.||
I love the helmet stickers and the Michigan helmet.
And I wouldn't change a thing.
The only thing Jim Harbaugh is guilty of is maybe being more generous in doling them out to players than Bo Schembechler. Curt Gowdy said that Rick Leach had 48 helmet stickers apparently in 1977. I doubt that was correct, but I don't care. Rick Leach ran the fucking triple option at Michigan for four years, starting 48 games (ridiculous today) and deserved every damn one of them.
Your preferences on the entire helmet award question depend greatly on when you started watching the Michigan football movie. If you started in the late 1990s, then I understand your view. If you started watching in 1971, then I'd also understand.
But this about today. Today Harbaugh is bringing back something that was old and cool with something new.
And I love that he did it.
I don't disagree that a naked Michigan helmet still kicks ass.
But I like Jim Harbaugh and I think the players love these helmet stickers, so let them earn helmet stickers.

|3 weeks 4 days ago||They should really go after Tom Herman of Houston (40)||
Herman is predictably kicking ass at Houston (8-0), where they also have a decent defense (Todd Orlando, alma mater Wisconsin1994).
Herman can recruit the crap out of Ohio and Texas like no one else. Texas has been an important pipeline state for Nebraska, particularly for skilled positions (QB, RB, WR).
The hiring of Riley makes increasingly less and less sense.
The best football team Mike Riley has ever coached was the 2008 Oregon State team and even that one finished 7-2 in the PAC-12 and 9-4 overall with 3 decisive losses and a 3 pt loss to 14th ranked Utah. That's as good as Oregon State ever got out of the man.
Further, against ranked opponents, which is kind of important for Nebraska, Riley's coaching record is just abyssmal.
Nebraska is a place where you need outstanding recruiting out of CA, TX, NJ and Ohio. Then you absolutely have to build up a walk-on program. That's how Devaney did it. That's how Osborne did it. It's the only way. You're Nebraska. Not Texas. Not Ohio State. Not Penn State.
Pelini was a liablity in many important areas. But he won games and he built a program there.
|3 weeks 4 days ago||Nebraska had options but there are no really good ones||
First, Tom Osborne's coaching tree is either aged or just not that impressive. Secondly, Nebraska's AD's have a bad habit of firing 9-3 coaches just befoer a long downward program spiral into the abyss.
They fired Solich in 2003 after a 9-3 record (58-19 career). Then they fired Bo Pelini in 2014 after a 9-3 (67-27).
Osborne Coaching Tree:
Turner Gill - (former Huskers QB 1981-1983, plus assistant under Osborne) Did okay at Buffalo, flopped at Kansas, now HC at Libert (4-4). Texas native. Good recruiter.
Kevin Steele - Huskers LBs coach 1989-1994, now DC/LB at LSU. Coached horrible Baylor teams 1999-2002 (9-36) when Baylor was on coaching carousel of AD ineptitude.
Frank Solich - (former Huskers fullback, 18 year Husker assist coach under Osborne, succeeded Osborne as HC. Current HC at Ohio where he is 77-59.
George Darlington - former Huskers DC, father of the infamous Husker "Blackshirts" defenses - now an assistant coach at Southwest Missouri State or something. Old.
Craig Bohl - HC at Wyoming. Stellar record at North Dakota State, but away from NDSU powerhouse, Bohl is struggling at Wyoming thus far (1-8).
Question: Who in their right mind thought that replacing a perennial 9-4 or 10-3 coach like Bo Pelini, with Ohio roots, who was taking the Huskers to Capital One, Gator and Holiday Bowls on the regular, with Mike Riley (93-80 career, 58-63 in the PAC10) and best top AP finish (ever) was 18th would be a good idea?
Even Tom Osborne didn't hit 11 wins in a season until 1982, his 10th season as HC.
Unfortunately, Eichhorst and Nebraska are going to pay for this mistake big time.

|3 weeks 4 days ago||UM-Illini hatred started before Bo, but Bo definitely stoked||
This mgoblog post and subsequent comment thread features a lot of information about Illinois-Michigan, particularly the Gary Moeller era, that the wikipedia page might not contain (yet).
Illinois and Michigan were rivals back in the Red Grange, Tommy Harmon days of the 30s and 40s, as well as the 1950s.
But in more recent years (1980 onward) a lot of the bad blood, IMHO can be laid directly at the feet of two former Illinois ADs Cecil Coleman and Neale Stoner. Combine their allegiances and management styles to Bo's insistence on retaliation to cure all things and boom, hatred and rivalry.
A lot of Michigan fans forget that Bo had never forgiven the Big Ten commissioner, nor Illinois among other BIG schools, for the 1973 Tie-breaker Rose Bowl vote and debacle. Illinois' AD Cecil Coleman voted for Ohio State to play in the 1974 Rose Bowl, not Michigan. Bo was enraged. He exacted his personal revenge out on the scoreboard for the rest of his career. Illinois only clipped twice (1983 and 1985). Then there's this old chestnut: 1981 Michigan 70, Illinois 21. I don't know that there were limits to Bo's anger on this question. In some ways I think that for 20 years Illinois football fans were just an unknowing passenger on the Bo Schembechler Revenge Express. Bo was conductor and engineer and someone always pays when you screw over one of his long-time trusted friends.
|3 weeks 4 days ago||Best part is that nobody knew about it. Wasn't orchestrated.||
Harbaugh wasn't trying to capitalize on a potential press opportunity or attempting to earn press points or "enhance the brand" with a cool story.
He just reached out to a long-time friend - understanding how much his stewardship of Michigan football and the trophy meant to him - and invited him to "just come along with us", win or lose.
Older, retired men are so often forgotten in our fast-paced society today. Too often nobody gives a shit about them. I find it really great that Coach Harbaugh did something that's just genuine. More proof that behind the great Michigan tradition is great people just like you and me.

If interested, some possible explanations for the McDoom surname here:
The name could originally have been one of several possibilities:
· Makhdoom (Arabic root letters Khay, Daal, Meem).This is connoted with the idea of serving
· Maqdoom (Arabic root letters Qaf, Daal, Meem).The root meaning is to offer or to present; or
· Maktoum (Arabic root letter Kaf, Tay, Meem) meaning to conceal or to suppress (and is also the name of the ruling family of the United Arab Emirates).
Similar-sounding name is quite common in the Asian subcontinent, particularly in Pakistan.

and then joining the ACC in 2004.
In 2004, every Miami Hurricanes fan ever was trash talking, promising they would just annihilate the ACC, including perennial ACC powerhouse at the time Florida State, which had won or tied the ACC title 11 of the previous 12 years from the moment FSU joined in 1992. That Miami cockiness was not surprising, after all they had just gone11-1, 12-0, 12-1, 11-2 and beat FSU in the 2004 Orange Bowl.
Fast forward 11 years later to 2015 and Miami is still searching for its first ever ACC title.
In fact, over the last 10 years since 2005 Miami has not even sniffed qualification for the ACC title game. They haven't even hit ten wins since 2004.
And by now we all know how an ACC college football season goes. Before September even kicks off we know that Florida State is going to the league's title game, and will play either Georgia Tech or Virginia Tech on the other side of the field. It's sort of a law now.
Florida State is dominating. Miami is not in the equation and it's increasingly difficult to imagine anyone coming in there and sewing that program back together after over a decade of irrelevance.
Personally, I hope that they don't come back. Ever. I disliked the swagger, disrespect and lack of sportsmanship that Schnellenberger sowed, and that Jimmy Johnson, Butch Davis and Larry Coker cultivated and harvested.
One of the most enjoyable plays you can ever watch in college football is George Teague's strip of Lamar Thomas at the 1993 Sugar Bowl, which Alabama won 34-13.
It's dated now and irrelevant, but at the time is was delicious kharma.

This 1978 game was interesting in that Michigan was coming off a home loss to Michigan State 15-24 in Ann Arbor.
Wolverines came in ranked 9th, and blasted the Badgers on their way to 6 straight wins and 10-1 record and BIG title.
Badgers finished 5-4-2 under first year HC Dave McClain (Brady Hoke's former HC at Ball State). McClain replaced John Jardine (37-37-3). Dave McClain was a good friend of Bo Schembechler. I understand they genuinely liked and admired each other.
Badgers tied with Illinois and Purdue that year. The 5-4-2 record in 1978 was the first +.500 year for the Badgers since 1974 (7-4 record, but no bowl).

Except Rutgers gained 349 yards total offense vs. Michigan State, including 141 yards rushing. Just like Michigan, Rutgers sucked on 3rd down conversion, while MSU lit it up. What does Rutgers have? A Sophomore quarterback named Chris Laviano (184th ranked by ESPN) and an NFL bound flanker named Leonte Caroo. And not much else.
Aside from an end around jet sweep, Michigan effectively has no homerun hitting play on offense that has worked well. After seven games and with five left to play Michigan has no reliable deep threat at WR, and even if they did, Michigan's QB can't get deliver the ball downfield with any consistency.
So with zero homerun hitters, all Harbaugh can do is just get lots of base hits, load the bases as methodically as possible, hope that base hits send some of the runners home, and that nobody flies out quicking during the offensive innings.
Meanwhile the UM defense has been pitching shutouts against inferior teams, crushing decent opposing rushing attacks (Devontae Booker, MSU backs) and slowing down otherwise lethal QBs-WR combos.
That's the best Michigan can do in 2015.
Disappointing? Perhaps yes. But worlds ahead of where Michigan was last year.
Bring in a Michigan QB with field awareness and a laser-guided Howitzer arm and Michigan is back in business. Wolverines will probably feature a 1,000 yard rusher again as a result of safeties and LBs having to play honest.
|5 weeks 4 days ago||I think the question is moot. MSU will not lose twice||
MSU is going to lose @ Ohio State this year, but win the remaining teams decisively for 11-1 record and BCS bowl.
Who ever wins the east is going to play an unbeaten, overrate Iowa team and annihilate them on national television.
|5 weeks 4 days ago||Next time though, double birds||
Do it properly you guys. When given the opportunity, don't half-ass it.
|5 weeks 4 days ago||Special teams are decisive factor||
You can win lots of football games with great special teams.
Michigan won the special teams battle decisively Saturday, until God stepped in.
But the metric that sticks out for me from Saturday is 3rd and 4th down conversions, as I thought it would, based on previous MSU game results.
The truth is that Connor Cook has been lethal on 3rd down, despite shoddy OL play and Lewis' heroics. And it showed. I don't like it, but the truth is Dave Warner has a done a magnificient job at MSU polishing what everyone else regarded as second rate QB talent, and shining them into NFL prospects.
Your team is unlikely to win football games when you only convert 35% of 3rd and 4th downs, while your opponent with Connor Cook in the same game is converting 50%.
I wrote on Saturday that in all other universes Michigan wins this game either 23-14 or at best 23-21. It just so happens we Michigan fans all live in the same universe where Charles White scores phantom touchdowns, Harry Oliver hits 51 year field goals with no time left, and Rick Leach's game-tying TD pass to Stanley Edwards bounces off Edwards' helmet into the loving arms of a LB some parent decided to name Michael Jackson.
It's all shit.
But you learn to accept it. Swallow the turd sandwich bollus. And move on.
Michigan is going to finish 9-3 this year. I'm going to be very happy with that. Not satisfied. Just happy.
|5 weeks 4 days ago||"The juggalos will get theirs||
"The juggalos will get theirs as soon as Harbaugh flips the QB matchup."
I don't know man. Something about Saturday's game at Michigan, and the Rutgers black out game before it, tells me MSU is not the same team. The juggalos may get theirs sooner than anticipated
But meanwhile....yeah, rat farts and admantium exoskeletons for all.

Wants to play football badly for UM. He's certain he can recover to 100% and improve on from there.
He committed to Michigan. It's good to read that Michigan is living up to its commitment to Falcon on the scholariship-paid education side.
|5 weeks 4 days ago||They are using the same officiating crew in Ann Arbor each week||
I don't know that there is anything UM can do about it.
This is the same crew that threw flags inconsistently throughout the NW contest and Oregon State game, etc.
It's really bad. I mean, H.S. refs are an upgrade at this point.
Harbaugh has been relatively composed thus far, and is telling the kids to just play through it, but I'm predicting NFL-level thermonuclear war on the sidelines one of these weekends.
|5 weeks 4 days ago||Except MSU '69 < MSU '15||
Michigan's 2015 team is completely different than that 1969 team, aside from a first year head football coach and a loss to MSU (in 1969 the loss was @ Spartan Stadium btw).
That '69 MSU team ended up 4-6. 2015 MSU is anything but that.
MSU's path to the BIG title game now is only slightly more inconvenient than Michigan's, except the Spartans already have their butthair win over M in their back pocket.
Michigan has to win out AND the Spartans have to lose twice.
It's pretty much over.
Best case scenario for 2015 Michigan is 10-2. That's doable, just unlikely given what we've observed so far of both Michigan and Ohio State teams, particularly Michigan's offense.
A more likely finish for the Wolverines will be 9-3, which everyone should be happy with. Not satisfied, but happy.
As for MSU, they've gone 13-1, 11-2 and will probably go 11-1 again this year (2015). And they're going anywhere. Their recruiting for 2016 is arguably the best it has ever been under Dantonio.

|5 weeks 5 days ago||Except it's not disrespect||
MSU needed a last second fluke play/error to win a football game that they trailed all game long. Yes, MSU outgained Michigan, but the Wolverines were poised to win that game, and at one point led the 7th ranked Spartans 23-14.
MSU is a talented team, but Dantonio and the Spartans were very fortunate. The next 3 games for them are easy Indiana, @Nebraska, Maryland before their big one at Ohio State.
|5 weeks 5 days ago||Harbaugh usually, not always, but usually||
has the laugh freaking laugh.
Let the haters say whatever they want. This team is going fucking steamroll opponents with malice aforethought, and there won't be anything they can do to stop it.

Don't make them angry. You won't like Michigan football when they're angry.
|5 weeks 5 days ago||I still can't believe people||
would make those kinds of ugly remarks about a UM football player like that.
O'Neill might be the most accurate punter Michigan has ever had. Better than Don Bracken and Zoltan Mesko ever where. He will probably break the UM punting record for longest punt one of these games.
Michigan fans have only 5 to 7 more games to watch in utter amazement at what this young Australian lad does with the American prolate spheroid.
Blake O'Neill is fucking amazing and we are blessed to have him in Maize and Blue!!!!!
By the way, to all the assholes out there, Blake had 7 punts with a 46 yard per punt average in yesterday's game. Not a goddamn one of you could pull that off.
|5 weeks 5 days ago||Agreed. It's only going to get better||
Michigan had MSU down 23-14 at one point and wonder WTF is happening to us.
Michigan fans should be proud of their Wolverines.
With 5 games left to play, three on the road and two at home, with Admantium spines in all of them, I would not be surprised to see some decisive wins by Michigan upcoming (read: curb stompings).

|6 weeks 15 hours ago||Want to trust it. Hate that I can't. And Dantonio.||
Great preview. Thank you.
Michigan State has been a rickety, bucket of bolts all year long. I've been waiting ever Saturday since September for them to be exposed by Air Force or Oregon or hell even Rutgers in a black out evening away game. But at every 00:00 that useless bucket of bolts has more points than the other team.
And now here we are. MSU is still unbeaten at 6-0, ranked 7th in AP. They have a senior NFL quarterback with a laser-guided, Howitzer arm, 4 dangerous receivers in Burbridge, Price, Kings and Shelton and yet another Ringer-Caper-Baker-Bell-bruiser type with LJ Scott, who's dangerous as hell and has been inexpicably underutilized.
And then, in the Week 7 Coaches Poll I read that somebody, a coach, voted the Spartans as the nation's No. 1 ranked team:
Do you think Dantonio is being understimated?
I don't like it, but I think it's true.
Every damn year Dantonio brings his MSU teams - major flaws, warts, and all - into this game against Michigan very well prepared, with high levels of confidence mixed with unregulated anger and thirst for perpetual revenge.
It says something, for example, when Mark Dantonio, who is irritated by all things, cannot give one goddamn after witnessing 13 penalties against the Wolverines for -124 yards (2011 game), 8 penalities for -94 (2009), 8 penalities for -88 (2014) - most of these being defensive penalties. To him it is all worth it. It's as if the season could and should end right there on the field against Michigan. Every year. Screw the rankings. Screw the title. Statement win for the program.
I agree MSU is beat up along the OL and has major flaws on defense. But their talent edge over Michigan at the skilled positions is still significant. They are a big play, clutch team, evidenced by their quarterback's play and being ranked No. 8 in the nation in 3rd conversion % in the same company of TCU, Houston, Baylor and Rice. They suck and watching them play is painful and ugly, but they make clutch plays over and over that move chains and outscore opponents.
I predict a Michigan win, especially upfront and against the MSU run.
But Dantonio's scowl combined with Cook's arm and Burbridge's legs keeps this game closer than anyone is predicting right now.
Michigan 24, Michigan State 22

Indeed Cook was phenomenal in that game. 23-38, 357, 2 TDs, 1 INT
Some of those throws and catches were amazing.
If Michigan does shut down the Spartan running game and forces MSU to throw, things are going to get very interesting. Spartans beat Oregon, Air Force and Rutgers last week with big pass plays. They will be a huge test for Michigan's secondary.
As great as UM's DL and secondary may be, in my view, Michigan wins this game running the ball and keeping Cook and his receivers on the bench.

“I don’t know that we’ve faced a guy quite like him that can throw and run and do what he does,” South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier said. “It’ll be a heck of a challenge for our team.”
“We’re looking forward to an exciting close game with Michigan,” Spurrier said. “We plan that’s the way it’s going to be, so there’s a good chance it will turn out that way.”
He also said these words just before that Outback Bowl game:
“When I end my coaching, I’m not going to get fired, so if it starts going bad, I’ll resign or something.”

I'm not buying into that idea at all.
MSU has the most experienced QB, best RBs and best WRs that UM has faced all year. Yes, their OL is beat up, and defense is underperforming.
The score will be lot closer than people think.
Most important variables in this game will be rushing defense and special teams:

So that organization and it's employees (players) and also the fans, don't have ANY claim on what Jim Harbaugh chooses to do with his time anymore. The right to complain ended the moment Jim Harbaugh boarded the flight to Ann Arbor.
Besides, if he did decide to attend the game and visit the Baltimore sideline, what exactly would he be guilty of? "Jim Harbaugh Loves His Own Brother!"
Naturally the sports press will find ways to sensationalize and drum up controversy where there is none.

Regardless, some history will be made.
Michigan State (6-0) @ Michigan (5-1)
Michigan is 1-6 vs. Spartans since Lloyd Carr left in 2007.
During Carr regime, Michigan was 10-3 vs. MSU, including 6 straight (2002-2007)
Last six Michigan football coaches Elliott, Bo, Moeller, Carr, Rodriguez and Hoke all lost their initial season contests vs. the Spartans. Osterbaan was last coach to beat MSU at first try, 13-7 in 1948 (MNC year), but MSU was not a Big Ten team yet. Can Jim Harbaugh break the first season curse vs. MSU?
Iowa (6-0) @ Northwestern (5-1)
Kirk Ferentz is 2-4 at Ryan Field since 1999. In general, Northwestern football has been bad news and a consistent thorn in Iowa's side over the years. The last Iowa win at Northwestern dates back to 2007. The most infamous Ferentz defeat has to be the 2010 game when 13th ranked 7-2 Iowa lost 17-21 at Ryan Field. Somehow even after getting blanked by Michigan, Northwestern seems poised for another upset.
Ohio State (6-0) @ Penn State (5-1)
We'll find out how "dangerous" Penn State really is. Probably not very. Penn State hasn't beaten Ohio State at home since 2005.
