is critical to on-field success. Please to hear Harbaugh doing this when Hoke, Rodriguez and Carr either didn't want to or didn't know how.
In the real world, the bringing in of new faces and talent happens at companies all of the time. When the newcomers are high-performing asskickers at their previous stops this can have the effect of demoralizing certain personalities (give up) while motivating others to fight even harder and become angry asskicking sonofabitches themselves. The result can be a stronger and deeper team.
So who has it better than us?

Now the important question: Does he wear Denard's number 16? It'll be weird sans dilithium, captain.
|2 weeks 6 days ago||Yeah, it's like they knew something was really wrong||
but didn't believe they could do anything substantial to address it.
Bear in mind like 90% of college football at that time was trying to gain yards running the veer or wishbone, so their 5'11", 180 lbs quarterbacks and tailbacks were getting annihilated on the option by 6'5"240 - 260 lbs defensive ends lineman (big for that time) and hard hitting safeties like Dennis Thurman, Dwight Hicks and Ronnie Lott. Tons of fun. The remark that No. 1 ranked Texas was operating the wishbone in 1977 with like their 4th or 5th string QB Randy McEachern comes to mind. It's a nothing short of a freaking miracle that Rick Leach even managed to start 48 games in a Michigan uniform.
|2 weeks 6 days ago||Also interesting that Rick Leach may have suffered a concussion||
in the 1976 Orange Bowl loss to Oklahoma according to reporter Bill Dwyre:
UM team physician at the time, Dr. Gerald O'Connor said this to the press:
|2 weeks 6 days ago||I could be mistaken||
but this 1977 Rose Bowl game might be the first football game where the Michigan football players had their surnames printed on the back of the jersey.
|2 weeks 6 days ago||Lack of science, but not lack of lawsuits||
This 1977 article in SI sort of blew things open the next year.
Pretty effed up that it took decades before rules changes were made to address concussion issues (miss plays when helmet comes off, extra med attention in cases of helmet trauma, game ejection for helmet first/spearing tackling).
Interesting point about high schools and liability issues, as well as the lack of ambulances to attend weekend football games. I've not attended a high school football without an ambulance being present.

Michigan football appears to be returning to white socks as standard team apparel again.
|2 weeks 6 days ago||Face it Walter||
|3 weeks 14 hours ago||"Of course....but maybe!"||
Of course.......Michigan football has been on a downward trends since 2011, which turned out to be an exceptionally "lucky" season for Michigan, so there's that.
Harbaugh is tasked with not only reversing the downward trend, but also to gain 2+ or 3+ wins in very short order (year 1?). Then there's the crazy as hell, Randy Marsh crowd saying: "we'll be at 10+ wins year one! Yeeeiaaahhh!".
I'm sure a lot of nice gains will be made during the off-season and for fall practice, and people will be overjoyed about those.
As Louis CK illustrated quite well, "but MAYBE"......it doesn't hurt to consider the Michigan 2015 season as the reclamation project that it very probably and most likely is.
Buddy Teevens and Walt Harris drove Stanford football into a deep ditch (16-40 over 5 years). It took Jim Harbaugh until a year 3 before the cardinal could hit > .500 in wins. Brady Hoke wasn't quite as bad as Teevens. And Walt Harris wasn't horrible (ask Pitt fans).
While it shouldn't take Harbaugh quite as long at Michigan, I for one am struggling to envision a year 1 turnaround right now.

Michigan wins outright Big Ten title. Ohio finishes 9-2 (lost earlier to MSU) and stays home.
No. 1 Oklahoma is on probation in 1974 because Switzer = cheater, so no bowl game for the Sooners.
New Year's Day January 1, 2 1975
No. 2 ranked Alabama loses to Notre Dame 11-13. Irish lost earlier to USC (e.g. infamous Anthony Davis and Trojan comeback-to-blowout game 55-24).
No. 3 Michigan vs. No. 5 9-1-1 USC
Tight game, but Michigan wins 20-18 for national title led by Sr. QB Dennis Franklin and a great defense.
Michigan>USC>Notre Dame>Alabama. Michigan is only undefeated team besides Oklahoma and Miami (OH). Michigan wins first national title since 1948.

|3 weeks 4 days ago||Yes.||
I kind of wish they would standardize on a helmet brand and style as well - preferrably Schutt Air. But Michigan uses a lot of different helmet brands and probably lets the players choose which style they prefer. The different brands are of course inconsistent in their neck label style, size, etc. Anyway, asthetics are one thing. Top priority needs to be player protection and safety from injury.

Why don't we just tell them not play defense too, Geno, just like the NBA.

|4 weeks 6 days ago||I don't think it's quite sunk in what Michigan has with Harbaugh||
He's unstable and crazy and a fantastically diabolically successful football coach. We're not talking about leading Ball State to one year of relevance with cursory connections to a national title team, or about a lifelong Bo assistant, or a lifelong Bo assistant who failed as an HC elsewhere. Harbaugh is none of that. He's a former player at college AND NFL level, and a coach of college and NFL level. Bo never did that. Moeller never did that. Carr never did that. There are plenty of examples of NFL coaches who came to college level and sucked. Harbaugh is not that either. He's weird. Harbaugh is going to win a lot of football games.
Ohio State has thoroughly enjoyed dining on surf and turf for some time. They now have a great coach, have had very little bad luck, while Michigan's program has been flailing around in turmoil, uncertainty and dysfunction for several years.
With an unproven QB, I too expect Michigan to play like average Joe's in year 1. Nobody expects Michigan to win the Spanish Inquisition this year. Or do they?
I do believe that Harbaugh's Wolverines are going to be competent, and at least good enough to pulverize with extreme prejudice the opponents they're supposed to, and perhaps may pull down the trousers of a few other opponents who think nothing bad ever happens to them anymore.
