Men don't want to be cowards, so like idiots we often tend to stand around and take it, in an effort to be macho. But this leads to getting angry, which is dangerous. Mongo only pawn in game of life.
Yet, if we men would only allow our rational side to shine through in such instances, we'd realize there is so much merit in running like hell.
Excuse me for saying this so gently here, but men who shout out these mottos but haven't dated or married or known physically violent female companions don't know what the fuck they're talking about.

Agreed. Getting cleated can be extremely painful. When it really happens. When it really does happen, and not a toe over toe touch, you're not going to flail your arms back and do a belly flop on the turf from a foot/toe injury. No freaking way.
Somebody grazes the edge/tip of his raised toe and "OMG foul!".
Horseshit to the 11th power.
Meanwhile, real injury: Fractured tibia. Hector Moreno. No belly flopping. No flailing of the arms. His head and eyes directed to the injured appendage. Normal human behavior when injured. Because he's in legitimate freaking pain.

Either add some more refs to the pitch or bring in video replay evidence to shut it down. Otherwise, what's the point of playing the damn game if you can just fake your way into penalties against the other team and steal game momentum on a whim?
This Academy Award business in FIFA, and soccer in general, is complete horseshit. The End.

You know, this "OMG just look at this weak schedule, will you!" excuse is starting to sound extremely lame. WTF man? Sure the 2014 Michigan football schedule sucks comparatively speaking. But it's not like Michigan football never scheduled a bunch of doormat/body bag games before. I seem to recall in the 70s, 80s and 90s that Michigan's AD had the balls to schedule perennial jokes like Duke, Houston (NNTH, the non-Bill Yeoman SWC Houston), Long Beach State and EMU. I totally agree that Appalachian State Part Deux is the dumbest thing ever amen. But what the hell, man. That's not going to prevent the future from happening. Oh God, I just sounded like Dave would in that last sentence.
|4 weeks 2 days ago||October 18, 1975 - Homecoming vs. Indiana||
Michigan was 4-0-2 and ranked 7th in the nation. Wolverines drubbed Lee Corso's Hoosiers 55-7. Indiana finished last in the Big Ten in 1975 with 2-8-1 mark.
Michigan Stadium attendance for that game? :
This was the last UM home game that was not sold out.
Why Michigan didn't pack that stadium for home games between 1969 and October 18, 1975 I still don't understand. Those were some of Michigan's finest days in college football.
This year October 18 is a Saturday, but an open date on Michigan's schedule.

I'm pretty sure that also a "human virtue" and not distinctly Prussian. By Prussian virtues, I meant the following list below.
That reminds me, I'm a punctual person, but I onced showed up late for work in Cologne by just 10 minutes because of traffic. The response from my colleague: "Amerikanische Punktlickheit" (american punctuality, i.e. late, not German). It's humorous when I reflect on it, but certainly not in their eyes. There's always healthy helping of true criticism in there meant to keep you in line.
- Aufrichtigkeit - sincerity or being 'upright'
|5 weeks 2 days ago||A former German colleague||
of mine once told shared with me his view that "Amerikaner haben keine Kultur" ("..Americans have no culture"). At first I thought he meant American culture is not homogenous, or that American culture is comparatively quite diverse. I was completely wrong. He really meant that Americans are culture-less, that the US is a society sans culture. I didn't feel like arguing with the guy at the time. I was young and wanted to remain politce. I just was amazed by his conviction on this point.
If you ever live in Germany, you quickly learn some important things. First, the long list of Prussian virtues, which help explain why Germans behave the way they do (including being straight-forward and direct, to a fault and often to the extent of being downright rude), and the fine centuries-old art of starring at other people excessively.

But to me there were two who struck me as players where you knew something spectacular was going to happen whenever they got the football, and there was genuine anticipation and excitement before the snap: Anthony Carter and Denard Robinson.

I'm so happy I got to witness Denard's first touch vs. Western Michigan sitting next to my dad in a jam-packed Michigan Stadium.

In my opinion, it's close to being the dumbest idea ever in college sports, right alongside the retiring of jersey numbers in the first place. Unless college football is going to expand jersey numbers out to 3 digits, it find it all kind of dumb.
I'm glad TB Mel Anthony wore No. 37, but I'm also very glad WR Jim Smith did too, And FB Bob Perriman after that. And LB Erick Anderson after that. And LB Jarrett Irons after that.
Each of these players were very special and made huge plays for the Michigan football team. They are all remembered for their contributions and their jersey numbers.
Anthony Carter, Greg McMurtry, David Alexander, Braylon Edwards were all spectactular too wearing No. 1 in their own way.
But what good are all these great numbers, if kids can't even play with them anymore? I think the practice kind of diminishes new players from making their own great story at Michigan, having to live in the shadow of prior giants. Screw that. Everyone knows past is important.....for purposes of tradition. But living off the past, or living in it are both ill advised.
Peppers getting No. 2 is really cool. I understand the choice.
In some ways, I wish he'd have picked little-used No. 39 or 38 or 46 at Michigan, to sort of say "screw it, I'm my own person, and I'll make my own damn legacy here, thank you".
|5 weeks 6 days ago||Welp, may we all live in exciting times||
|5 weeks 6 days ago||Michigan had Russell Davis and Harlan Huckleby in same backfield||
for 4 years - 1975-1978.
Davis was the No. 1 running back in the nation in 1975 and chose Michigan over USC (John McKay's final year). They even had Rob Lytle start at TB in 1976.
Huckleby had to have been a top 10 running back that year out of Detroit Cass Tech.
In those days Michigan ran a meat-grinder run offense, which meant plenty of carries. Today not so much.

Michigan recruiting certainly seems to have strong momentum. Love the Shea Patterson offer and background story. Arizona has a lot of QB talent built up with Scroggins (USC transfer, 4-star), Solomon (4-star), Randall (LSU transfer, 4-star), McGee (2-star)and Brewer (4-star). I could be wrong, but with Morris (5-star), Speight (3 -star) and Malzone (4 star) next year, Michigan seems to have a lot more roster space and opportunity at the QB position than the Arizona Wildcats will have.

But obviously a major rival (like Ohio, MSU, ND) is going to use a very different perspective and version of events to portray basically all you've written above as a bunch of "lame excuses" for not performing to standard.
Urban Meyer doesn't have to negative recruit at all. Looking at the state of Michigan football from Ohio's perspective, there's glee in throwing salt at the wounds of a debilitated enemy, especially when things will likely not be so easy going forward. Urban leaves this out conveniently in his schtick. The truth is that Michigan's number are building back up, and Ohio's days of easily and decisively beating Michigan are probably over, because the talent gap is no longer there.
But Ohio lackeys will love just about anything Urban Meyer says. "On the fence" emotionally-tied recruits will be persuaded by this "ohio show", but more deliberate and rational thinking prospects probably less so.
Despite all the press negativity and "OMG is Hoke on the hot seat?", Michigan is recruiting remarkably well. At the end of the day, the two teams still have to play 12 games of football including each other in Columbus in November. No amount of trash talk is going to beat Michigan.

|9 weeks 5 days ago||'83 Auburn, you lost to Texas by 13 in the season opener Sept 17||
Texas (11-0) lost to Georgia (Cotton Bowl) by 1 pt.
Auburn was extremely fortunate to escape Michigan in the 1984 Sugar Bowl - by a butt hair (by Al Del Greco's butthair to be precise) 9-7.
1983 Miami (FL) (10-1) had an almost identical season to Auburn (10-1). They lost badly to Florida (by 25 pts) in season opener. Then beat Nebraska in Orange Bowl by lousy point.
Except there is one gigantic difference between Auburn and Miami's season:
Auburn's Sugar Bowl opponent Michigan was 9-2 and ranked 8th.

As for assembling some pretty Commodorettes to help with football recruiting, Franklin: "all the other colleges did it".
"In addition to the missing evidence, which included surveillance video, text messages, interview transcripts and more, Gonzalez reports that misconduct on the part of Franklin was also alleged:
Referring to records, the attorneys said the victim was contacted by Franklin and [former Vandy and current Penn state assistant Dwight] Galt during a medical examination four days after the rape to explain "that they cared about her because she assisted them with recruiting."
It went on to say that at some point, "Coach Franklin called her in for a private meeting and told her he wanted her to get fifteen pretty girls together and form a team to assist with the recruiting even though he knew it was against the rules. He added that all the other colleges did it."
Vanderbilt and Penn State did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Reached by cellphone Tuesday, Franklin repeatedly said he was "not interested in talking." He declined an offer to hear the allegations."

Michigan would have to have the defense utterly implode this fall, which is highly unlikely given the accumulated depth and talent there the last 2-3 years, and the shittiest schedule imaginable.
I'm not suggesting Michigan will be No. 1 in defense next year or anything, but I don't know many BIG10 teams other than Ohio returning 7+ starters. I expect Michigan to field one of the league's better defensive units.
Offensively, the OL looks pretty precarious: Talented, but lacking experience and depth. Times like these I remind myself of the times other BIG10 teams like Northwestern, Iowa, Minnesota and MSU fielded far less talented and equally less experienced OL's too in recent years and still somehow found ways to win 8+ games and go the Outback bowl. They probably didn't have OC's and position coaches playing musical chairs at G and C most of the year, degrading confidence, etc. Michigan is not going to field a Saturday spectactular on offense, but that's OK because nobody wanted that in the first place: "this is michigan", "manball", "we'll run the powerplay", yaddayadda...
Michigan wins 7 easily but pulls one or two additional games out of its butthole to finish 8-4 or 9-3 and an Outback bowl.
In other words, slightly more or less a return to the ole' Lloyd Carr mean which everyone seems to forget was Michigan's reserved seat in the college football world.

Lance Armstrong (drugs, denial and lies), Brett Favre (The NFL's Anthony Weiner), Sammy Sosa & Mark McGuire (Roids), Jim Tressel (cheating), 6. Pete Rose (gambling), 7. OJ Simpson* (if I did it, armed robbery) 8. Tiger Woods (hookers) 9. Joe Paterno (sex crime cover up, obstruction of justice).
BTW, USC still has OJ Simpson's #32 jersey on the peristyle steps of LA Coliseum. Instead they just call it "Mike Garrett's 32":

Talent-wise Michigan appears to be better positioned than 2011 on the OL.
Michigan's problem in 2011 was two-fold: low depth and low talent
Michigan's problem in 2014 remains to be two-fold: low experience and low depth

|13 weeks 1 day ago||My prediction: Michigan goes 9-3||
and Hoke keeps his job for another year. Michigan's defense surprises and play rather well all year, while the offense is boring but "serviceable" enought to get first downs.
Further, I think Michigan's defense beats MSU's strength next fall (offense), but UM loses to ND, PSU and Ohio.
Michigan has a comparatively talented team in the BIG10 with more depth than the last 3 previous seasons, one of the nation's best DCs in Greg Mattison and a proven, energetic OC in Nussmeier.
Ironically, despite all the doom and gloom thus far, it is possible that Michigan exceed expectations significantly in 2014 despite Brady Hoke not being a Top 10 college football coach.

|13 weeks 2 days ago||I agree with||
"Part of his job as a coach is to manage team chemistry and develop internal leadership".
I agree 100% that the head coach is to manage team chemistry and develop internal leadership. I'm sure he will do all of that.
I disagree that Brady Hoke needs to publicly admit, re-gurgitate or re-acknowledge coaching failures from the 2013 football season (7-6) because to do so is completely unnecessary at this point. Besides this, who cares? Except now they do because Brady Hoke brought it all back up. Forget 2013 (like 1984, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2010) and move on to winning games in 2014.
Obviously football coaches make motivational and leadership adjustments every year - even mid-year to re-energize the team, because the chemistry is never the quite the same year to year. This is nothing new. Sometimes coaches stop doing things they normally always do, like after a 1-2 start in 1980 and the Schembechler-Cannavino confrontation. We didn't witness Schembechler railing endlessly to the media about the 1984 debacle (6-6), beat up/injured QB and all. So why is Hoke doing this to himself?
2014 is a critical year. All this kumbaya "we now understand leadership " stuff is great material. I even LIKE it.........on a post-season review show, after Michigan has gone 10-2 or 11-2 or 12-0. I don't see the value in more 2013-related remarks to the media during pre-season, especially after 8-5 and 7-6 results.
I don't mind people disagreeing with me on all of these points.

Jesus, pulling should not be a completely foreign concept for most guards and tackles coming out of high school. I get that mastering the technique of pulling is critical, but why is it hard?
I'm sure they pull in practice frequently, but if they suck at it, then I just don't understand why more effort and time isn't dedicated to perfecting this aspect of the blocking schemes/plays?

Bolden has always appeared more "scrawny" to me. Ross is the same weight apparently and shorter than Bolden but packs a punch on tackles/hitting.
I think Bolden is flying around in this group and can be a violent player on certain plays, but he hasn't mastered control in his tackling techniques (read-react, positioning of hips, wrapping arms, driving with legs). That said. He's only a junior and probably will get a lot better this year. But there's a ton of value in guys like Morgan and Ryan who can hit and wrap to stop runners in their tracks. Regular exposure to Bud Wilkinson's "Oklahoma" drill will do nicely here.

I would have loved to, but probably would not have got in since I was a "slacker" in H.S. and pretty much a B+ student, and I my family moved out of state which made financing a UM education tough (impossible).
The reason I'm a Michigan fan is because of my parents (ironically, a Nebraska grad father and a WMU drop out mom). But I guess my grandfather being a well-known obstetrician from UM and my mom growing up in Tommy Harmon's old house in Ann Arbor had a lot to do with my fandom. Plus childhood autumn's and January 1's were frequently filled with family, food and people screaming themselves hoarse at Rick Leach and Anthony Carter, turning down Curt Gowdy TV announcing and substituting with Bob Ufer on the radio. Disappointing game outcomes, but very happy memories.

I'm not at all surprised to see outbreaks of mumps and measles now in 2014. Ohio is not alone. In California, they are reporting 10x the number of measles cases this year. Canada too is getting hit. The outbreak (in measles) appears to be linked to the Philippines, which I believe normally follows the WHO vaccination schedule that includes MMR. Except the Philippine govt failed to execute, and ouila: unnecessary suffering for children and adults. They're backpedalling about price and local poverty, except the MMR is free in most countries. Nice try Philippine govt.
Mumps is not deadly, but measles (incl. the teutonic brand of measles) are deadly, especially for infants/children.
