I could go for that if a couple Bay Area teams are included. First choice would be Stanford, otherwise my regional pick would be Cal-Berkley. Think we could beat on ‘em 3 out of 4 years and get good strength of schedule from it. |

| 2 days 21 hours ago | Va Tech and a North Carolina school |
Everything I heard while in the south was focus for SEC was primarily in VaTech and one (or two at the time, pre-MO) of the North Carolina schools. (Maybe selling NCState to pull a TexasAM and become a bigger in-state player to UNC). They are very against expansion in states they already reside and have shown that throughout the years rebuffing discussions on GaTech returning. So South Carolina and Flodida expansion should be out for them also. |
| 2 days 21 hours ago | ACC grant of rights, AND a forced stability right now in PAC12 |
Personally, IMO the present stalemate has TWO huge obstacles to overcome before expansion can continue. The ACC grant of rights, AND a forced stability right now in PAC12. They really have no where to expand that isn’t a step down (short of Texas and Okla of course.) Unless the PAC12 gets into the picture you have one less large factor influencing the move towards further expansion. |
| 1 week 1 day ago | UND Athletics states the same. |
Good point, and to make it even stronger we have UND.COM (The Official Site of Notre Dame Athletics ) adding even more significance to the historic value of the series prior to the 2012 game. http://www.und.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/041912aab.html {emphasis mine} The 2012 Notre Dame-Michigan game at Notre Dame Stadium will feature special recognition events based on Irish football history dating back to the first Notre Dame game in 1887 against Michigan. The Notre Dame-Michigan relationship qualifies as the original and oldest Football Bowl Subdivision rivalry. It's just the official site of Notre Dame athletics saying it is the first game they ever played and is the "original and oldest FBS rivalry". But what do they know?!?!? |
| 1 week 1 day ago | ND can't justify Stanford over Michigan game. |
Actually, Stanford is the one series that ND can’t justify keeping on their schedule over Mich. Right now, ND current spin to deflect “chicken” comment is to bring up that the other series’ are more “storied” and have been played longer. Stanford/ND is the one continuing series that is less on both counts when compared to Mich/ND. The other games have been played more often. Series Start Total Games Stanford/ND 1925 27 Mich/ND 1887 40
I understand why they would want to keep it over us, It gives them more marketing, recruiting and overall general “presence” on the west coast and also has a historically greater chance of ND victory. Now they get the presence on the east coast and south by beating up on the ACC and Navy, west coast through USC & Stanford, and Midwest with MSU and Purdue, without having to face the Big Brother who could slap them around and knock them out of contention! So in effect it really is some "chickening" by them. |

| 17 weeks 23 min ago | UNC loves them some ACC |
Agree, though as nice a fit as UNC would be, they are too entrenched in the ACC to leave at this point. Most of ACC officials are from UNC and their allegiance is very strong. Right now, if the ACC folds UNC will be the one “turning off the light as they leave”. GaTech has everything the B1G portrays as important for an added school; save one - geographic contiguity. This would not be too great if UVa is added though and the plum the Atlanta TV market brings is huge. I think everything awaits and hinges on what results spring from the ACC/Maryland buyout negotiation/lawsuit. |

Yes. Even with a medical condition, you are not able to utilize NCAA specified pharmaceuticals or therapies and still be eligible to compete. This policy is often confronted by physicians treating asthmatic athletes, as many effective therapies are banned by NCAA and international athletic agencies as they are steroidal in nature, provide a stimulant or increased lung function. They need to find something else to control the condition, that may be less effective, or the athletes realize they are not eligible to compete at some levels. |

| 20 weeks 2 days ago | 12-2 overall |
I feel your assessment is good and possible. I think between the Huskers, ND and Buckeyes we lose one, and then another loss in either B1G championship or bowl game. It all comes down to whether we have a strong passing game or not. A still substantially unproven QB and unknown at RB and whether there is any elite or two really good receivers on team 134 in my mind that could be the downfall. |

| 23 weeks 1 day ago | Love it, but it won't play in Maryland or Minnesota |
From a UM Football purist point of view, I like it also. I’d love this to be the final divisions. Also preserves many rivalries and trophies. Politically, however, I can’t see this flying. Schools in the “outer” would complain that they have far greater travel expenses and fans having to travel greater distances. |
| 23 weeks 1 day ago | You know people that don’t think Depaul is an actual school? |
You know people that don’t think Depaul is an actual school? Seriously? What do they do during basketball season? I really find that hard to believe. If it is solely athletic notoriety that’s to be justified, isn’t that argument rather redundant? Of course athletic notoriety is higher at schools with more popular or higher echelon athletics. Just like musical notoriety is greater at school with better music programs, or medical schools, or business programs. (Dartmouth is a lousy football team, but they have some pretty killer academics.) Yet, I believe a school’s notoriety and acumen isn’t solely tied to what division they participate in football. Anyone in a HR or other hiring position knows the value of a specific institution’s degree in his or her field. I submit to you that someone holding a degree from Washington-STL, Wayne State, Depaul, TJU, UnivChi or JohnsHopkins will garner greater prestige at hiring time than the other div 1 programs mentioned, including most of the MAC, ConfUSA, and many others in most areas of study. (Of course, none come close in agriculture, horticulture, or packaging to MSU. /s)
Yes, I listed W&M in error as an urban, and meant it as a smaller, academically prestigious institution. (Wife went there.) However, Washington-STL is also in a more suburban area of ST Louis, much like UCLA in Westwood.) |
| 23 weeks 1 day ago | UVa and GaTech. |
For the B1G, my bet is still on UVa, and if they can swing it around some possible “contiguous” rule GaTech. Can’t see Delaney letting those markets get away from him, plus they are both AAU members. (UNC would be nice but they are too tied to Duke to be solo and too tied to ACC to jump ship if it isn’t totally sinking.) |

| 23 weeks 1 day ago | The ACC will always be on shaky ground now |
The ACC will always be on shaky ground now as they got caught napping when the music started without a strong dance partner. They now find themselves the “fifth wheel” or solo single friend at a couple’s party. At one time several years ago, I seriously thought the Big12 would be the next to go “boom”. However, they pulled off the greatest coup pairing up with SEC in the SEC-Big12 game. That ensures their survival and firmly established them as “one of the 4 pre-superconferences”. ACC will now always be on the outside looking in; subject to break-up talk and continued departures until “super-conference equilibrium” is met. |

Not sure how much credence I give to your examples, Herm. Washington-St. Louis has an excellent academic reputation, as does Wayne State along with increased notoriety; much better than the schools you used as comparisons. Both include upper-mid medical schools and law schools. You can also cite renown and prestigious urban-area schools without D1 football to disprove your examples, including John Hopkins, Thomas Jefferson, Univ of Chicago, Depaul, William & Mary, NYU. Or any of the numerous urban programs that do very well for themselves in an city setting including; USC, Washington, Minnesota, Georgia Tech, and Cal-Berkeley is very urban, right next to Oakland. |

Agree with you. IMO you have to protect the sanctity of that game. It has to always be valid. UM and OSU have to be in the same division…ALWAYS! Otherwise, long term it will lose much of its luster. Just not worth the money to me. Its even ok to split off MSU and set it up as protected yearly cross-game. Let lil’ brother grow some and either sink or swim. I am ok with that and also that it would most economically for all parties be better with a “regional” division, (east-west, north-south, etc) so agree probably best for travel costs to have UM/OSU/PSU fight it out yearly. (For competitive balance I feel IU/Purdue together vs split. Could be reversed but feel it would be lob-sided easterly.) |

| 24 weeks 3 days ago | Hate to admit, but UNC/Duke & ND mesh well in a conference |
I see UNC/Duke as the perfect foil to ND forming the bedrock for a conference or sustain a new “ACC”. ND would dominate in football with occasional success from UNC maybe Miami(FL). Duke/UNC dominate a strong basketball conference during the winter. The ACC is headed and pretty strongly supported by UNC so it will take almost a complete collapse to have them depart (and they still would probably be the ones that “turn out the lights” if it does close shop.) They will keep the leftovers from ACC (NCState/VaTech to SEC, FSU/Clemson to Big12) and from the Big East merging a conference of ND, UNC, Duke, Wake, BC, Pitt, Syracuse, Louisville, Miami(FL),UConn, Cinci, Houston, Navy, Memphis. (The last 5 are variable and I doesn’t account for new Big East like USF, Boise, SDState, SMU, Temple, etc.) |

"OH How I Hate" is something I’ve espoused, but I also respect their teams and I don’t ALWAYS want OSU to lose at EVERYHING. Actually, I want them to win except once a year, and especially during bowls. I want all the B1G to do well. As a strong OSU/B1G is good for us. |
| 24 weeks 3 days ago | Do the Buckeyes want US in same division or is it one-sided? |
I like it also. Most here favor having OSU & UM in the same division. I have always wondered if the other side feels equally fervent. Anyone have a true feeling how Buckeye fans or university in general feel about it? I have tried searching a couple of OSU fan sites but don’t get a clear picture. What I find runs the gamut between ability to meet up in the championship game and the effect a re-do of the game will have on long-term rivalry. Do the Buckeyes want US in same division or is it one-sided? Anyone know? |
| 24 weeks 3 days ago | After GT & UVa |
If you do go 20 (after ND?), only other teams that make the Presidents happy would be Kansas or one of UNC/Duke (AAU members). UNC/Duke may be forced to re-eval how badly they want to stay together. Current trend on conference growth is all about “new markets”. They don’t base it on competition or rivalries, and won’t add two schools from the same state (Although UNC/Duke may just be the one time a conference does.) Personally, I think ND is not an option. They will stay by themselves as long as they can find a “conference” they can put together to give them some games during the meat of the football season and house their other sports. (I foresee a conglomeration of Big East & ACC leftovers.) |

| 25 weeks 18 hours ago | Only point I would contend |
Only point I would contend is they may feel Boston has never really supported college sports, especially any specific one. The market tends to be segmented fairly equally between BC, BU, Harvard, Holy Cross, MIT(some degree), and UMass. So you take what market you did have and essentially watered it down even more, support-wise. I know a similar contention could be made about NYC, but it’s also the overwhelming size/prestige of the market and Rutgers is still the major collegiate sports presence there and you also get NJ in the bargain. (If you call it a bargain. /kidding) |
| 25 weeks 19 hours ago | Actually that is not |
Actually that is not correct. The VA politicians just wanted UVa to use it’s influence to get them in a more secure conference (ACC) when it looked like the BigEast was crashing. (Correct me if I misunderstood, Wahoo.) They don’t have the leverage now. With both in the ACC they may have to fend for themselves; as I doubt one of the stronger conferences will take on both. IMO UVa will go to the B1G and SEC (which has already said it wants into VA) will take VaTech. |
| 25 weeks 19 hours ago | Vanderbilt is going NOWHERE |
Delaney would love to have the Nashville/Memphis market, but Vanderbilt is going NOWHERE. It’s all about money and Vandy couldn’t make enough new money to justify it. B1G and SEC are both stable conferences and will make comparable amounts so why would they move. |

None? Don’t be too sure. Access to a major and growing media center like Atlanta makes total sense with what Delaney is doing. I believe he covets that sort of media exposure in the south. My contention if it is true is UVa is next. Only bad part is we will fill before we get into NC. This is not about head-head competition with the SEC. SEC would never take GT. Major conferences will now only add one team/state to open new cable markets = more subscribers = more money. |

True, not sure if that is a factor in assessing revenue but it could. (Heard it was just a poor contract negotiated by ACC.) So ACC would suffer nationally there also, as it would be competing with all the Eastern Time zone games, which includes the B1G and SEC. The Big12 has less competition in the Central and Mountain Time zones. Have to remember with bowls also; they select teams that provide loyal fans to fill their stadiums as well as TV revenue. The fervent fans tend to travel more often, which tend to be in the south/Midwest. |
| 25 weeks 1 day ago | SEC won't touch UT, Pac12 and B1G would. |
SEC won’t touch UTexas. What will UT give them that they haven’t already got with the addition of TexasAM? Mark my words, in 10 years TAMU is just as large as UT in branding and prestige. That was an incredible move for the SEC. They have access to the recruits, notoriety, and viewers in all of TX. With the unfurling of the SEC network they don’t want the argument they would have with UT and the Longhorn Network. They got all the favorable ability to advance their brand and siphon off the TX media dollars, WITHOUT dealing with the demi-god mentality of UT. UT won’t leave until forced, they have it made right now. Nope, don’t ever see SEC taking on UT. They may go after Okla if they get the chance. Pac12 and B1G are the only ones that would benefit from a UT addition. (And I see the Pac12 getting Texas Tech first in a similar play as SEC | TAMU) |

| 25 weeks 1 day ago | Keep 'em down on the farm with TV |
Sorry, Wolv, love ya’ but have to disagree with ya’. It is also the level of the support. I lived in Iowa, Midwest, southeast, east coast, and now CA. The thing to remember is it is not the casual fan we are talking about here. It is the die-hard, support-your-team-at-all-costs, and the-week-revolves-around-the-game mentality. They ALL watch the games in those areas, men, women, children, grandpas, grandmas and even animals!! (ok, only the domesticated ones. /s) That is what they live for. (Also, many of those mid/southwest schools tend to keep their graduates at home and more local.) They buy the tickets, watch the games, and buy the merchandise. They don't have the variety for entertainment. All of which generates revenue, fan base, and TV viewer-ship = $$$. That doesn’t happen here on the coast, and not on the east coast for college much north of the Carolinas. |
| 25 weeks 1 day ago | IMO this next year could be |
IMO this next year could be very pivotal for conference alignment. What happens with the MD exit fee from ACC, could be the lynch-pin. If it is lessened to any significant degree it could induce a Florida State/(and whoever) departure. And personally, if I had any input into Big12, I would continually court Florida State and do whatever it took to bring them onboard. With FSU in the fold, Big12 is assured a major role no matter what ensues. |
| 25 weeks 1 day ago | I like Kansas also, but what |
I like Kansas also, but what does it give us we don’t already have. We already passed on Missouri, which would have given us better markets. All I want from the Big12 is Okla or TX but that won't happen. |
| 25 weeks 1 day ago | If the SEC expands it will be into Virginia and/or North Caroli |
If the SEC expands it will be into Virginia and/or North Carolina. Bank on it! (I am excluding ND in any discussion.) They have a rule to only pick up on school per state and have long coveted the hole NC leaves in their foot-print. They have wanted UNC for a while, but the Tarheels don’t want to leave the “Tobacco Road” clan. They may take NCState if pushed. They don’t want Texas, not now they got all they wanted from the state with TexasAM. If they take VaTech, watch for UVa to eye the B1G longingly. |
| 25 weeks 1 day ago | 1. Doubt if Texas goes |
1. Doubt if Texas goes anywhere, at least within next 10 years+. It will take that long to realize the fruits of Longhorn Network, etc. They have developed an almost demigod-like mentality, similar to ND. They have virtually complete autonomy over what they do and are in a conference that will support it. 2. If there is ever a “falling-out” between TX and Oklahoma that could be significant and may cause the Sooners to reevaluate and leave, other wise I can foresee Pac12 picking off maybe Texas Tech in a next round, strengthening their access to the fertile recruiting ground, and divvy up the football crazed state again, (maybe lessen UT influence for a future union). It is really the Pac12’s only real play.

| 25 weeks 1 day ago | “Could”, maybe, but |
“Could”, maybe, but doubtful; you may wish to rethink your statement. You have to use a perspective other than “fan’s view”. This is a university president speaking, someone appreciative of income, endowments, grants and other fiscal concerns to keep an institution operating. He’s not looking at athletic competition or quality, and I am sure he sees the profits B1G is generating. So I doubt he really thinks the B1G deteriorated much by strengthening their presence in the east coast TV market. |

Agree. I am not saying LT won’t commit and would love to have him. Just used it as an example of the offer. I have no inkling either way with him. As everything I’ve heard indicates it will go down to the wire on NSD. Was there a time he came close; I hear there was; but IMO that doesn’t mean he moved on. I think he is a smart, thoughtful kid and wants to make the best decision on a major choice in his life. I think he has his own timetable and will make the choice when he is absolutely certain and hasn't burned any bridges behind him. |

Totally agree it is not a punitive issue and though I have never been in the situation of hearing Hoke’s last discussion with a recruit as he commits (have been for another B1G), I do believe his policy is made clear. Which in my understanding you have enumerated: If you take another visit, you are no longer considered a “committed” recruit, doesn’t mean you can’t recommit and as Marcus mentioned the outcome of Conley will be interesting as I believe he has informed the coaches. |
| 26 weeks 2 days ago | he may just have to wait it out |
I agree with mGrow above, if he really wants it, he may just have to wait it out and see if there is an opening at or just prior to NSD. It could come down to holding an offer or two for a select recruit (read LT, Green, etc) and if that does go south (or west /s) then he may get another chance. |

Totally disagree! Iowa State is a wayward step-sister to the Hawkeyes. Even the trophy sucks and is lampooned. I never understood it and was amazed at the number of students that would tell me what a great rivalry Iowa and UofM were and the joy they had when they beat us. | 27 weeks 2 days ago | Disagree. Torii is a perfect |
Disagree. Torii is a perfect fit for the Tigers at the 2-hole. He will be a cat-bird just like Anaheim, between Jackson, Cabrera, and Fielder. Even considering a .280 BA is more plausible, he clobbers left-handed pitching, and the Tigers need that. When you consider the financial side that seals it. Bourn, Pagan, Swisher and others all are going to want long contracts, which the Tigers should avoid right now. He’ll come with a 2 yr contract & maybe an option, just long enough to cover and not be saddled with another prolonged aging contract. He is great defensively, and can tutor Jackson as he did Trout. Has some pop, and enough speed. Plus is a strong, vocal, veteran leader in the clubhouse. An asset the Tigers needed desperately after losing Vmart. (My only concern is I hope they don’t clash, but doubt they will) As soon as I heard the Angels didn’t offer Hunter, I was knew he was the perfect get at the right cost. |

| 27 weeks 2 days ago | No Free Agents for Miami foreseeable! |
No way! Miami wouldn’t get Hamilton. Not unless they guarantee him all GROSS stadium receipts of the next few years. Would have to be front-loaded, not back, because Loria would never be trusted again to not have another fire sale. (I hear Giancarlo is livid about the trade.) Miami has shot themselves in the foot. The only way they EVER get significant free agents is with Tony Montana included on their negotiating team. Otherwise, they will always have to include a massive premium to induce a signing or there has to be something significant detriment to the player signing elsewhere. (maybe a Melky situation) Jays fans have to be dancin’ in the streets as this addresses most of their needs with quality not just band-aids. Including swapping out Escobar. Makes them a huge player in AL East. |

| 31 weeks 2 days ago | Agreed, think it is a smart |
Agreed, think it is a smart move by MN’s AD. When I lived there, they had serious attendance issues at games. Casual fans, (and every team has them, some more than others and MN is one with college football as everything is Vikes/Packers.) don’t know all the intricacies of college football, just want to see their team win. This gives them a strong case to win several at the beginning of the year and as others mention get more bowl invites. (Great! More money for UofM also!) More wins and bowls = more PR and more fans and more attending games. Doesn’t matter that more than half don’t know what conference UNLV, Missouri, UNI, VaTch, Temple, New Mexico, or Houston is in. To them a win is a win. They get enthused. They go to games, more ‘hot-dish’ tailgates, more support, and more revenue. It’s a great move by the AD to recognize it and have the chutzpa to follow the path he thinks is best for his teams. Who knows; they win enough; he may just develop a winning culture again in 10-20 years, building confidence each year that they win significant games over better B1G opponents, get better recruits, and develop a more powerful Gopher program. (Iowa State has been doing similar, not playing quite as many weaker conference teams though.) Better than what they are doing now, languishing as a perennial doormat. |

| 36 weeks 2 days ago | looks like a controversy |
Looks like we have a true controversy. I had always thought officially we were the Wolverine state and Great Lake State was just a marketing tag like Water Winter Wonderland, etc. Actually MSU textbooks list us as Wolverine State. Had helped a niece with some course work she has at MSU. (I know, poor kid, we all feel sorry for her. But she got a full ride, and she is still “blue” on the inside.) It was an upper level geography class with the textbook online: GEO 333 - Geography of Michigan and the Great Lakes Region (link ) Other facts However, State of Michigan (in the Michigan State Facts section) officially lists itself as “Great Lake State” first:
Michigan.gov – Official web site for the sate of Michigan – States the opposite. Michigan's State Facts ( link ) · The name Michigan is derived from the Indian words "Michi-gama" meaning large lake. · The State Nickname is the "Great Lake State." Others include "Wolverine State" or "Water Winter Wonderland." In summation, we have a lot of facts but no real conclusion. I guess we really don’t know what we are. /s (Also the GEO333 text has some interesting and humorous items though understandably most look at wolverines fairly derogatorily in “Why are we supposed to be wolverines?”. link ) |
| 36 weeks 3 days ago | MSU |
Have to root for MSU. It’s a non-conference game for them, and anytime a B1G team wins it makes the whole conference better. Look at everything that went down after last weekend’s games, everyone agreeing what a s**t conference the B1G is this year. Personally, I try to cheer on the B1G teams whenever they play out of conference. (I said TRY, mind you) It can be very tough. Even find myself feeling a bit of satisfaction when they screw up on a play, BUT… only logical way to defend our schedule, even when it is the buckeyes. (Also in my book, ND is a greater rival that MSU. May be more of a need to win a particular game a given year, as now, but overall it's ND to me.) |

It’s interesting debate. On one hand I can see missing some games as punishment and show that he has to be responsible. The judicial side of things but,… If he was just an ordinary student, would he be prevented from participation in extracurricular events because of this? Would he be banned from theatre, music, or art if he was a fine arts major? Or even intramural sports, clubs or other activities? If you are talking scholarships; would you lose an academic, or artistic scholie from this event? As an undergrad, I had a couple of acquaintances that got arrested; one DUI and one, shall we say other items of intoxication, they were artists (theatre and painting/design) and both were allowed to continue to practice and participate, (in shows, competitions, etc.). Granted it was a few years ago, (ok more than a few), and the perception is different on these offenses today. They had to go to court also, and dealt with the judicial process, which will also decide Fitz and Clark’s fate, and punish or dismiss accordingly. Is it just the notoriety? Not trying to defend their actions, just hard to come down firmly on either side. These guys always get held to the standard; they shouldn't get extra benefits than ordinary students; shouldn't they get the same allowances? |

Gatorcountry (a UF fansite) has something similar that may interest you for comparison, Turd. They created a database with a ranking of each individual 2013 football recruit in each of the four major recruiting services: ESPNU, Scout, 247Sports and Rivals. They then come up with a composite score for each of the football recruits. Also they explain their methodology. Basically, it's an average of the four rankings with a slight scaled multiplier applied for players who are only ranked in one or two of the four services. (So again it uses the number a recruit is listed rather than some score they may attain in each service. Last Updated: June 19, 2012) - |

I have a close friend that played on that Irish team. Always stated how he, Montana, and most of the scholarship players couldn’t stand Rudy. They always called him the “Whining little A**hole”, as he’d always complain and say he could such-in-such task better. He hated the movie, but said he saw how it was made because Rudy pestered you to death, would embellish outlandishly, and never take “no” for an answer. |

I think you are pushing it to say Meyer is perpetrating some “ploy”. I doubt he really cares whether “he lost some head to head recruiting battle to MI” other than losing the actual recruit. I know several D1 coaches and they really don’t care about that. That is FAN speak. He most likely ascertained that Green wasn’t going to commit his way and figured it was time to cut his losses and utilize his resources toward someone else. Trust me, I am no Meyer fan, but coaches just don’t think like that. (And do I want Green,... "HAIL YES!") |

Credible? Right, no guy would EVER lie to impress a chick? (I believe I’ve told several while in my 20’s that I was in MLB draft then got hurt. /s) It doesn’t hit you that many times the recruits are just saying what she wants to hear? Sorry, she doesn’t seem credible to me in the least. They will announce themselves or another site first if it is official. |

True. IMO they told LM3 that they needed him to get off the fence and commit to a spot or a guaranteed spot would be used this weekend. Something may open up later, but Hoke couldn’t guarantee it. So I am DEFINITELY ready to Buckle-Up! |

Socks I have are the generic white ones with reinforced toe/heel. Is personally knowing Falk the only way you can get them with the Michigan “M” on them? Do they have the monogrammed ones at those two retailers you mentioned? (Sportsarama and Varsity?) Love the socks and I want some! |
