History is a guide too - the last Michigan coach to win his debut against Michigan State was Oosterbaan (I believe). Here's to JH reversing that trend.

Sorry, but Utah is not a good team. Look at their schedule seriously - they are a fringe bowl team.

Went to sleep early last night and my Saturday morning alarm clock (aka my 2 year old son) failed to get me up timely. Being rushed, only picks today:
Georgia Southern @ South Alabama +3
New Mexico -3 @ New Mexico State
Maryland @ Syracuse -1
California @ Arizona -9
Southern Illinois +2 @ Purdue
Utah @ Michigan -3

Good job on the post - I'll be looking forward to it every week.
I'm staying away from the Michigan line - if anything I'd take under 53. I don't see the Redhawks scoring much, if at all, and Michigan is in a down spot giving last week's game.
I'll take Army +28.0. Stanford is coming off a tough loss to USC. Teams that have a week to prepare for the triple option tend to do the best - I like Army to keep this right around 3 TDs.
I happen to think Penn State-Rutgers is an absolute mismatch, Penn State -3. Rutgers was impressive in Seattle but Washington State was clearly overmatched (see the Nevada game). Penn State was one of 2 (Minnesota being the other) to not make the Big Ten look awful last week. Penn State is 4th in the nation in rush defense - Rutgers is 119th in pass defense.
I have Wake Forest under 3.5 wins in Vegas - looking good especially after a loss to ULM. But I'll take Wake Forest +14.5. The Demon Deacons are in the midst of an offensive transition so expect a struggle to score. But Wake isn't bad defensively.
Jerry Kill has done an amazing job with Minnesota, but the team has rarely been challenged in the non-conference. TCU - 14.0. The Gophers defense gave up over 250 yards through the air to MTSU(!?!?) last week. Minnesota's pass defense ranks 99th in the nation in pass yards allowed. Yes TCU has only played one game, but 13 players caught at least one pass (3 with 50+ yards). TCU covers.
Week 1 I had Virginia getting 21.5 against UCLA - not because I think the Cavs are good (I have them under 3.5 wins), but because their defense will keep them in games, even when the offense sputters (which will be often). I don't think Vegas is giving Louisville -6.5 enough respect though. While the Cards haven't played a road game yet, do you really think Virginia's rushing attack is better than the Canes Duke Johnson? Cards by double digits.

I'd definitely be willing to contribute in some form or another.
Definitely don't have the time I used to - everything changes when you have a child (especially when a second one is on the way - wife is due in December).
I'm still following the lines a lot - went to Vegas and placed some bets on the first week lines but had more action on the win totals (Michigan was off at the time?).

Believe it or not, this has already undergone extensive testing at Purdue. Just ask the search committee who introduced Danny Hope.

The NCAA is more concerned about maximum number of games. I think there's an argument to add one game, on the basis that every Big Ten team will play at least one conference tournament game each year.
The Big Ten, and Big Ten Network, would object to elimination of the tournament based on television. My guess is Chicago/Indianapolis might have an issue, too.

How about just "stop recruiting"? With this year's team it appears I have done just that.

"They don't graduate their players."
Actually, with regards to South Carolina that portion is true.
South Carolina had a graduation rate of 55 and an APR of 912, among the worst in FBS.

Even if he is 18, that's irrelevant if he wants to play scholarship football. An LOI must be signed by the student athlete and a parent, if the student athlete is under 21.
So unless Malik is Brandon Weeden, this is an issue.

This could be laying the ground work for a multi-division format that has been predicted for awhile. If the ACC is granted autonomy in choosing its participants in the ACC title game, they could split into four divisions (even with 14 members, uneven divisions), pick the top two for the title game.
They could then make the argument that the other division champs are just as deserving - there you go, there is your play-in to the playoff.
Obviously this situation would require adding another game to the schedule, but it would at least lay the framework.

Quite simply, to maintain this sort of action, you'd have to argue a damage to one's reputation.
Does calling Notre Dame chicken even harm their reputation, in all honesty?

I was 9 and sat through the entire game. To this day I know I can get through any bad weather game, based on that one.
|1 year 24 weeks ago||Its legal. Your concern, my||
Its legal. Your concern, my guess is, is the federal law prohibiting online gambling. The law differentiates between luck and skill. If the game is one of skill, its legal. Also, if the game is specifically exempted, its legal. Fantasy sports are exempted (and arguably a game of skill), so its legal.
I wrote on the UIGEA back in law school, so I'm pretty familiar with it, FWIW.

Interesting move. There was much speculation that Johns Hopkins wouldn't join. How does this impact Virginia and Duke? I know the Grant of Rights is in place, but litigation could POTENTIALLY change that (as an attorney, potential is always a keyword, I know), but doesn't this make the Big Ten more attractive for those schools now?

For all the complaints about the 2014 schedule, the 2015 one will be awesome. I don't mind seeing body bag schools, as long as they aren't the same ones. Ditching Directional Michigan for UNLV is great (I wouldn't mind it if there was a return trip, either - maybe I could talk my wife into a Las Vegas trip).

Sullivan was previously at UM in a fairly high administrative role. I want to say she was provost of some sort (off the top of my head). She's got experience working from the academic side.

Touche, but isn't Northwestern a bit outside the Ivy League's footprint?
|1 year 39 weeks ago||It makes it more likely the||
It makes it more likely the Big Ten sends extra teams to bowl games, meaning more money. If the argument is that money is the driving force behind realignment, the best way to attract new members (should there be an expansion to 16), would be to increase the pot of money.
The top tier teams, even with "parity-based" scheduling, would still make bowl games - most would consider Michigan, Nebraska, Ohio State, and Wisconsin in this group (setting aside Penn State due to the bowl ban).
The "best of the worst" teams would have an increased shot at making a bowl game - probably Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Rutgers in this group.
Really the teams who are hurt the most are the programs considered to be good enough that they draw top teams, but bad enough that they can't win - Iowa, Michigan State, Purdue.
If you can figure out where to put Maryland and Northwestern, hats off to you.
|1 year 39 weeks ago||A terrible team? No. By||
A terrible team? No. By that logic, Maryland would have a significantly better shot at making the Title game.
A decent team who isn't great? Maybe, but keep in mind that a loss to a divisional opponent is effectively worth two.
Example: Michigan plays Nebraska and Wisconsin in crossovers; Ohio plays Iowa and Wisconsin; and Rutgers plays Northwestern and Illinois. Assume Michigan and Ohio lose BOTH crossovers, but both beat Rutgers.
Even if Rutgers wins out, they would need BOTH Michigan and Ohio to lose at least once more.

Wait, Rick Pitino resigned from Minnesota midway through the year so his son could take over as head coach?
The two situations couldn't be anymore different, actually. Richard's dad probably had some influence, but he wasn't the most recent coach at Minnesota.
|1 year 43 weeks ago||While Minnesota has the money||
While Minnesota has the money to pay for a big time coach, there is little reason to take this job if you are established. Having to compete with Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, MSU, and Wisconsin on a yearly basis (not to mention Iowa, Purdue) is not exactly easy.
I tend to agree its a very good hire. Somewhat risky given Richard's lack of head coaching experience, but he's a great recruiter, when given the resources. The Gophers are going to have to upgrade facilities if they expect to keep him, and if they want him to do well.

I've actually heard the samething. I don't remember where I heard it from, and while it would be a different style than Beilein, it should would help bring recruits in. Not to mention the resources are greater at Michigan than VCU.

Its also a coincidence that Florida got one of the easiest draws for their Sweet 16. Let's connect the dots . . .
Florida plays FGCU. Who at Ohio used to be at Florida? Urban Meyer. This was clearly Gene Smith's way of appeasing Florida fans after stealing their coach.
I might have upvoted your post if you would have added that tidbit, but alas, you did not.
