Here you go: Increase the number of scholarships available from 13 to 15. Then require that every freshman scholarship player you bring in counts against your scholarship limit for four years or he exhausts his eligibility, whichever comes second. Continue to require the year long sit-out for transfers, but ban teams from having to provide a "release."
That'll kill the incentive to gently (or not gently) force a player to transfer, real quick. It'll also stop the Caliparis of the world from hording one-and-dones.

I once drank two pitchers of beer and got in a car. The good news is, I wasn't driving; my friend drove me home. The bad news is, he had three pitchers of beer. Easily the dumbest thing I've ever done involving a car.
The next morning he called me up and told me he'd gotten in a fender bender that morning while getting breakfast. Lucky that didn't happen last night, I said. Yup, he said. Later on he admitted that was a fib - he actually had gotten in a fender bender that night, after dropping me off, and how he got out of a DUI, I still don't remember.
It wasn't me doing the drinking and driving, but you might as well smack me in the face anyway for being complicit. Lesson definitely learned.

Nothing fancy. I was raised right, by a two-time U-M grad.

Actually, I think he meant one quarter of the year. They'll be eligible to return to team activities in July.

Hell, part of me expects him to say: we're here to talk about spring practice, any questions about spring practice? No? Alrighty then, great talk, see you in August.

This game is a weird combination of crushing disappointment and sanguine acceptance. I really thought we'd win it and then lose the Elite 8 game. Coming so close to winning it and not getting there really sucks. But despite 2013 I couldn't see getting past Kansas, nor could I see beating Purdue after doing it twice - they'd be out for blood big-time.
However, D.J. Wilson does need to spend the summer practicing layups, putbacks, and dunks, while getting whacked with pugil sticks.

No such thing as free.

I am not absolving Holland of blame by pointing a finger at Blashill. But Blashill has not shown he can coach in the NHL.

Regarding Vanek, I think it's really more the case he got back to his usual self after finding a bad fit in Minnesota. Minny was the only place where his scoring was down.
Tatar has taken a pretty clear step backwards after his 14-15 season. He was 24 then. Most players don't step backwards or generally even plateau at 24.

I don't think Chicago State is an HBCU. But yeah, it's a struggling school for sure. Geography as much as anything is also a problem for it. Probably in no way a candidate for any kind of conference realignment until the WAC finally finishes collapsing.
|1 week 2 hours ago||I'm not convinced of that.||
I'm not convinced of that. If one or two Wings were regressing from expectations, I'd blame the players. Pretty much the whole team is underperforming. Nyquist, Tatar, Sheahan (especially Sheahan), and former players like Jurco too - the power play sucks and the guys who were supposed to be building blocks of the offense are thin shadows of what we thought they'd be when Babcock was coaching.
This points to Blashill. Maybe he's a better college coach than NHL coach, but I've been completely and totally unimpressed by him and if it didn't hurt Michigan I'd love the opportunity for the Wings to go find someone else.

The thing about the Horizon is that, for the most part, it's an urban-campus conference. NKU isn't actually a big footprint expansion - it's just suburban Cincinnati. Morehead State is also kind of close, but utterly rural. That's where the Indiana schools come in.
RMU would be in the tough position of trying to stay in the NEC for football and lacrosse. The MAAC schools make a bit more sense.
The hell with Chicago State. That school is seriously considering dropping sports altogether, from what I read. It's more likely that the Horizon would help sponsor a D-II school's jump to D-I (Indianapolis? Wayne State?) than add Chicago State.

More likely answer: The league stands to lose more viewers to excessive touchdown celebrations than they do to a lack of touchdown celebrations.

The Horizon had better get cracking. It's actually at ten now, but if Wichita State goes to the AAC, I'd bet a lot of money on the MVC replacing them with Valparaiso. Already raided the Horizon once by replacing Creighton with Loyola. With the Summit League focusing itself west of the Mississippi, Ip-Foo and You-Pwee seem like logical targets.

Before I bought my Mustang I test-drove a Crossfire. I even got to the point of sitting down with the salesman to go over facts and figures, until they went full slimeball mode. (In hindsight, these guys weren't very bright. I was young, stupid, and had some disposable money. They only saw the first two. The Ford guy saw all three and therefore the difference in the way I was treated was night and day. Don't regret the purchase for one minute, though.) Anyway, the Crossfire was wicked fun to drive. It was definitely overpriced and had a $20,000 interior in a $40,000 car, but it sure was fast, and turned on half a dime.

I've always thought we should repeat a month sometime so that they line up according to how weather should be. Our April weather should be March's. March should be February. January should be December, December should be November, and so on back down the line.

A really good friend of mine from high school had a 1985 or 96 Nissan 300ZX, T-top. Just like this:
We pulled the top and went for a celebratory drive when he got into UVA, and did it again a week later when I did. This is one of the few Japanese cars I'll confess to really liking.
|1 week 1 day ago||I think they'll do well.||
I think they'll do well. Injuries up the wazoo last year and they still managed to just get pipped out for the postseason. Might see some regression from JV and Fulmer, but I expect a very good year from Castellanos and I think Matt Boyd will be a big breakout player. CF is a disaster and I think Jones doesn't go north, but grabs that spot by June 15. McCann should be better too now that he's healthy.
A weak division (CWS in full rebuild mode, Minny in full Twinkies-as-usual mode, and KC going down the tubes fast) means the Tribe and Tigers should be able to pile up wins and the loser of the division race is a likely wild card.
I think they're in good shape against the cap, too, despite some obvious anchors. If for some reason they tailspin, JD and Frankie are great trade pieces. Almost $30 million comes off the books with Sanchez, Pelfrey, and Lowe after this year, so they should be able to do a little rebuilding on the fly. They could be in better shape in places, but they're still contenders.
|1 week 1 day ago||I'm sure I've told this story||
I'm sure I've told this story before, but it supports your argument so perfectly I had to bring it up again. Several years ago now, UVA was playing UNC and the Heels were flopping all over the place in the first half. They called a foul on UVA's Mike Scott when his elbow got a little up in the air, and UNC's John Henson (I think) flung his head back to make a Dookie proud. That was Scott's fourth and they'd already called a bunch of ticky-tack and phantom shit on UVA already so the crowd was going ballistic. They went to the monitor to see if it was a flagrant elbow, and discovered that the crowd had seen what the zebras missed: no contact whatsoever and an Oscar-worthy flop. That was with 15 minutes to go in the game, and they never called another foul on UVA until stop-the-clock time.
So yup - I'm convinced that there are definitely times where the refs not only do a make-up call, but have a really bad mistake in the back of their heads the rest of the game and let stuff slide that they wouldn't have before they screwed up.

#1 basketball pet peeve is when ballcarriers (which is what they become) drive to the rim with the ball carried like a football. It's never called but it's easy to spot the instant you see it. James Naismith wrote the single most basic of basketball rules specifically to prevent people from doing that.
If I were king of basketball, I'd make it a point of emphasis to instantly call traveling when the ball is tucked away like that.
|1 week 2 days ago||Yeah, but the point remains.||
Yeah, but the point remains. The whole world knows that end-of-game fouls are obviously intended to stop the clock and many times players are just flat-out grabbed with no attempt at the ball. By the letter of the rule, those should all be flagrants under #2. It's just that the refs operate under a sort of unwritten covenant that says, hey, at least make half of a half-assed effort to look like you're going for the ball and we won't call a flagrant on you even though we should.

Kansas looks scary. They've got to be the favorite to win the whole thing right now. MSU hung with them because MSU has that golden horseshoe up their ass, but unless Swanigan goes apeshit I can't see them having any trouble with Purdue.
|1 week 2 days ago||They get away with those||
They get away with those dorms by having N basketball players stay there and N+1 regular students. That way they can claim, by the letter of the law, that it's not a benefit specifically for athletes only. Even though it really is.

Yeah, they would. Because people spread dopey rumors mainly for attention, and they're not the type of people to weigh evidence.

I mean, they're pretty white-collar. You just gotta be about toughness and together and pride yourself on defense and work to get better at it.
That should work once, but their future opponents might be pissed at you.
