I was thinking elementary school, but I should've also gone a little later. When I was lifeguarding in high school / college, we'd play headlight tag a couple times a summer. We'd be in groups of two, a couple groups would be drivers, and everyone else would be runners. The runners would get about a five-minute head start and have to get from the pool where we lifeguarded to the elementary school flagpole about a mile and 3/4 away, without getting tagged and IDed in the headlights. Easier said than done since it's a pretty old-school grid-system neighborhood and not many good hiding places that don't attract homeowner or police attention.

We had a game that was called wall dodge. It was like regular dodgeball, except instead of teams, it was one kid with his back to a wall and everyone else pelting him with dodgeballs. If he caught one, the thrower had to take his place. Until he did he would just get whacked with dodgeballs.
Toilet Monster was another one. Picture two sandboxes connected by a concrete arch about three feet tall, four feet wide, and eight feet lengthwise. There were kid-sized holes in the arch like Swiss cheese. The game was basically sharks and minnows except the Toilet Monster was trying to drag you through the holes.
There was also Drano, which was just one kid trying to plug up the circular slide and the rest of the line trying to pile on top and force him out the bottom.

Because, when asked, they specifically said it was not about a competitive advantage and was entirely a principled stand because Think Of The Children. Hypocrisy, from the dictionary: "a pretense of having a virtuous character, moral or religious beliefs or principles, etc., that one does not really possess."
If they really Cared About The Children, they wouldn't let their coaches partake in such an awful activity, but that would hurt their programs.

Correct, and the obvious conclusion to be drawn from that is that the competitive disadvantage was a much greater concern than whatever student-welfare bullshit they used to pretend to justify the ban in the first place.

It's a picture of a basketball player, playing basketball, so yeah, it's pretty much a basketball logo. I agree with Glob, I think it looks really awkward.

Chances are you'd have to pick. I'd be shocked if the Crew didn't instantly become the most-hated MLS team among Detroit fans, because Ohio.

If they do that, then Detroit Tartars FC MUST HAPPEN.
|2 days 13 hours ago||I expect the current version||
I expect the current version of the team would have to be cool with that. Unilaterally appropriating the existing identity has certain legal issues.
|2 days 13 hours ago||I always liked Detroit City||
I always liked Detroit City FC for a possible name, even before the current team was founded, but that's taken now.
Other than that, I never liked copying European names. Real Salt Lake, really?? There's going to be three "Uniteds" in MLS eventually. Lame. (Plus two "Citys" so it's probably not so hot a choice for MLS anyway.) I love Detroit City's nickname "Le Rouge" as it calls to mind both the city's French and auto heritage in one.

Ditto. Can't get into MLS. A Detroit team would be all it takes for me.

Once upon a time while still only having my learner's permit, my mom had me drive her around on a snowy day to a couple different places she had to go. At one stop I did the following:
1) Park the car
2) Apply parking brake
3) Go inside store
4) Return from store
5) Start car
6) Drive off
Somewhere between 4 and 5 is a missing step, which I only noticed after about a mile of fishtailing down the snowy and icy road at 10 miles an hour, like a drunken Tokyo drifter trying not to get caught. Yes, she forgot too, and we were both marveling at how darn slick the road was until I remembered the missing step.

Because almost all of the other stories and articles were based on work by one biographer, who wrote two Cobb books and is now generally known to have faked a number of details about Cobb's life and purposely misportrayed him as revenge for having been difficult to work with on Cobb's autobiography.

Sort of a weird, backwards route. Back when Bo passed away, I had this curiosity about what reaction our rivals had to that, particularly OSU since it was the week of that game. I'd never heard of MGoBlog. Buckeye Planet and the RCMB made for some interesting reading that week. But it was while perusing Buckeye Planet that I found the links to MGoBlog.
The answer to my question, by the way, was that OSU fans almost exclusively paid their respects while MSU fans were split down the middle between "that sucks, I guess" and "hope that fucker is rotting in hell." RCMB gonna RCMB.
|3 days 20 hours ago||Now for the downsides,||
Now for the downsides, however:
- The total area is about 1.8 million, which puts it on the low end of population for the major leagues, but also includes far-flung areas like Elizabeth City and Williamsburg.
- The team would have to be on the Southside somewhere, because the Peninsula is too small to support it, but there isn't a lot of cross-pollination across the bridge-tunnels. For your averae 7:00 weekday game, I can't see people being willing to put up with the rush hour traffic and the hassle of going to the game from Hampton or NN. I would submit that even coming from Portsmouth, people would consider it too much of a pain. Any time a tunnel is involved, traffic suuuuuuucks.
- Most of that military population is pretty transient. There are some people who stay their whole careers, but many don't (or else they're doing four or five and getting out again.) And the other thing about most of that military population is that it doesn't have much disposable income - some don't even have cars. The bulk of it is junior enlisted dudes.
When I lived in Virginia there were plenty of efforts to bring a major-league team to the area (notably, the Expos) and I was rooting for one of them to succeed. Living in Norfolk, my friends and I would go to Admirals games. I even have an Admirals jersey (but I can't wear it to Wings games, because it looks like a Blackhawks jersey. Bad foresight on my part.) But I'm not sure I can say I would've gone to major-league games just as often. Maybe when the Wings came to town. Can't beat $15 tickets with major-league prices.
|4 days 4 hours ago||Yeah, but the Vegas team will||
Yeah, but the Vegas team will have two major advantages that the Coyotes don't: they're the first team in town, and they should be able to sell plenty of corporate-favor tickets, vacation-package tickets, etc.

Jim Hackett didn't need a year because it was obvious from Pluto who the ideal coach would be. Not so with hockey or lacrosse. No, Mel Pearson is not Harbaugh-level obvious.
|5 days 9 hours ago||It was either jump from club||
It was either jump from club to varsity or shut it down for a couple years. Shutting it down for a couple years would not have made it any better this year. If it had been done the way you wanted, this wouldn't be year 5, it'd be year 3, and we wouldn't actually be all that much farther along, if any.
John Paul built the program from the ground up. It would have been the world's biggest dick move to tell him to fuck off now that the program is taking the leap to varsity. You're always posting about how That Is Not Michigan - well, that would've been the most un-Michigan move ever.
It may be very true that JP isn't a varsity level coach. But whether or not you're trying to OUTRAGE UNACCEPTABLE, that's exactly what you're doing, especially by saying the word "botched" in literally every lacrosse game thread.. There is no logical or rational way to argue the transition was botched.

It's a little surprising it got off the ground. The early episodes are kinda awkward, once you've gone through and seen the rest of 'em. It is the best ST series for sure, but it didn't really hit its stride until about season 3.
