By the way, a few people have asked recently about Touch the Banner's 2013 Season Countdown. The first post will be up on Sunday (2 days from now). |
| 16 hours 48 min ago | If I were beginning a |
If I were beginning a subscription today, I would pick 247. It's easily navigable, has good information, and stays up to date. Also, the mods don't seem like pricks there. The Rivals mods are pretty prick-ish, and the info isn't as good as it used to be. However, they do have a good track record of rankings accuracy. ESPN does a good job of updating people on the board via TomVH and writes a lot of good Michigan-related articles. However, their rankings are somewhat questionable, and the ESPN site isn't as easy to navigate as 247 or Rivals. Scout is terribly user-unfriendly, and Tom Beaver is kind of a jerk/moron, from most accounts; but they do have Sam Webb, who is the best Michigan-related reporter in the business. (The above sites are listed in order from best to worst, in my opinion.) |
| 18 hours 36 min ago | Peppers could play just about |
Peppers could play just about any skill position on the field. Heck, he makes some decent throws, too. If he came to college to play RB/WR, he could probably even take some direct snaps as a "Wildcat" type of QB. (I doubt they would do that with a guy playing primarily CB, but you never know...) |

| 1 day 12 hours ago | Lloyd Carr never had a losing |
Lloyd Carr never had a losing season in his career. I think it's kind of far-fetched to believe that Carr or another equally talented coach would not have succeeded with what was left. We can believe or disbelieve the rumors about Mallett, Manningham, Arrington, etc. leaving, but Carr knew how to develop a team and get the best out of his players. Both the defense AND the offense would have been better if Carr or his doppelganger had been in place. We wouldn't have won a national championship or anything, but his track record suggests that a winning season would have been in place. |

I wasn't really following recruiting when Woodson came out of high school, so I can't really compare/contrast them. |

You can rap and be a professional athlete. Just ask Shaq. I think he'll go the "conventional route" and go to college. |
| 1 day 17 hours ago | I think he would be very good |
I think he would be very good at the nickel position. If Dymonte Thomas takes over Thomas Gordon's voided spot in 2014, then that would certainly open the door for Peppers to start. Taylor would be a senior in 2014, so then perhaps Peppers could start at corner as a sophomore. |

Brady Hoke has said previously "We'll always take a couple of running backs." I don't know where people are getting the idea that Michigan won't take a RB in this class. |
| 2 days 13 hours ago | He's not really a dual-threat |
He's not really a dual-threat guy, more of a pro-style guy. I don't know that he could play anywhere else. |

I'm in that camp, but I haven't seen him around here in a couple years. Just this "WolvinLA2" guy, who's kinda shady. |

Rivals released the 4-stars outside of the top 250, and Ways, Speight, Marshall, and Bushell-Beatty, and Bunting are still 3-stars. |

I don't care much about the Bears, but I do think Urlacher is one of the best overall athletes to have ever played the position. He was pretty fun to watch in his prime. |

| 2 days 17 hours ago | I know you're not comparing |
I know you're not comparing Malzone to Rosen or Dillman or anyone like that (just Campbell), but Rosen is way out of Malzone and Campbell's league. If Michigan is going to pursue the best of the best at the QB position, then Malzone/Campbell ought to be a ways down in the pecking order. Malzone looks to me like a guy who might end up with lower tier Big Ten offers - like Michigan State - but if Michigan goes that route at any point, it's likely because they whiffed on the big-time guys. |

I'm pretty sure Denard Robinstein is Jewish. |
| 3 days 4 hours ago | Are you sure about that? He |
Are you sure about that? He left behind Ryan Mallett, Mario Manningham, and Adrian Arrington on offense; it's not exactly his fault that they decided to leave. There was also a decent defense left with Steve Brown, Morgan Trent, Jonas Mouton, Mike Martin, Tim Jamison, Brandon Graham, Terrance Taylor, etc. A decent defensive staff should have been able to put together a better defense than what Michigan had. And the offense would have been better if someone came in who ran a similar system to Carr's. It just so happened that they hired Rich Rodriguez, who changed the offense - which is totally his prerogative - and brought in a dysfunctional defensive staff. |

I have had some contact with Ross Douglas's dad, and he seems like a quality guy. |

They also really liked Isaiah Bell. We can find examples on both sides, just like we can do with every rating service. |
| 3 days 12 hours ago | They can do whatever they |
They can do whatever they want. Personally, I don't put a ton of stock in the rankings. They're fun to look at and keep track of, but it's all very subjective. I'm just saying when you count on a guy to add 35-40 lbs. and change positions to meet your ranking's expectations, there's a lot of room for error (what if he can't add weight? what if he can't block? what if he adds weight but gets really slow?). |
| 3 days 12 hours ago | Taken in the context of the |
Taken in the context of the Elite 11, you're absolutely right. But he also received offers earlier than Speight, was ranked as a 5-star or high 4-star from the beginning of the process, and was widely considered to be a blue-chip prospect. If the Elite 11 says "thanks but no thanks," a bunch of schools concur, and so do most of the recruiting services, the majority of the evidence suggests that ESPN is going out on a limb with their ranking on Speight. I'm not saying ESPN won't be proven right in the long run, of course. |
| 3 days 12 hours ago | It is a little odd, but |
It is a little odd, but Rivals has a better track record than ESPN. Some of those ESPN 150 guys are really a little bit questionable. These guys might end up being good down the road (as low rated guys always do), but Lawrence Marshall at #107, Wilton Speight at #125, and Ian Bunting at #114 are all head-scratchers at least a little bit. Bunting is very skinny and played WR, Marshall is very raw, and Speight had zero offers when he committed to Michigan. When he had a chance to earn an invite to the Elite 11 finals, not only did he not receive one, but he wasn't even mentioned by Trent Dilfer in the roundup. Now, Dilfer might not be the greatest QB guru in the world, but he's got a better track record of college success and NFL experience than the guys who work for ESPN, Rivals, etc. If Speight were truly the #125 player in the country, I would think he'd be a shoo-in for the Elite 11 finals. |

Tim Sullivan at Rivals said that no bump should be expected for most of those guys who are outside the top 250. They're there for a reason, not because they were previously overlooked. |

| 3 days 14 hours ago | I didn't realize that "class" |
I didn't realize that "class" involves liking every place in the world and/or not making jokes about anyone. I guess this board is full of people who lack class, because nearly everyone here makes jokes about the state of Ohio. You've probably even made a joke or two about other states before, but that's just a guess and I don't feel like researching. If I see you call out everyone who makes a joke about Ohio, I might reconsider expressing my feelings about New Jersey. Until then... |
