I've secretly wanted Lewis and Peppers to rise up and snatch the CB spots this season. Partly because they have so much potential and insidery hype and partly because I was pretty unimpressed with Countess and Taylor last season. I think this next game will go a long way in determining Taylor's future role. If Lewis and Peppers kill it against Utah, Mattison will have a very tough time not moving forward with those two as the primary options. I think Taylor's a good player, though, and am curious whether a safety/3rd CB role might be good for him.

Curious what happens to Taylor once he comes back. If Peppers and Lewis play well this next game, I don't see them being displaced. Has Taylor played safety before? Might be of better service at one of those spots.

This is good since everyone knows we shouldn't expect to be good until 2015.

Why, then, are so many other teams in college football able to execute assignments well enough to move on to things like tempo and misdirection and more complicated concepts? Why are we stuck on basic execution? In year four of this regime?

I'm not arguing that there's anything inherently wrong with theories and schemes. Indeed, their value is in guiding us where to look and what to try. You test a scheme, test a theory. If it works in your context, great, keep doing it. If it doesn't, move on to the next one. I think the feeling regarding tempo offense is that there's a lot of evidence to support it's effectiveness, so let's at least test it out and see if it works for us.

I think a well-placed, ironic "lol" can be effective at times.

I think the trap that a lot of the coach-types here fall into is that they understand the logic behind various strategies and tactics and appreciate how those strategies and tactics are supposed to work, in theory. Al Borges's offensive system was brilliantly designed, they'll tell you. A masterpiece of nuance. You just don't understand.
I do the same thing in my field with theory. It's a fun intellectual exercise to consider a well-thought-out argument, and I appreciate a good logical framework. The problem is when theory runs into reality. Rarely is it valid for all contexts. A certain play may be drawn up to perfection. Doesn't matter if the personnel can't execute it.

Shane has played before the Miami game. He looks more comfortable in the pocket than Devin.

No, I agree that he looked pretty mediocre last season. The shocking thing is that he was first team All Big Ten last season, and now he's maybe benched behind a true freshman and a true sophomore. I don't imagine that's happened many times.

Well, for the three or four M fans who were hoping to write off our performance last week on account of Notre Dame being a powerhouse this year . . .

Pretty sure he stood tall in the pocket on one of his balls that was dropped. I think pocket presence is one of Shane's clear advantages over DG. There was a play in the first half where DG has a pretty solid pocket (surprise!) and he inexplicably ducked down to avoid a phantom defender, thus forfeiting the whole play. He lifted his head up, saw that he was, in fact still protected, and took off running. For two yards.

Ha, well, he's looked a lot better than last year. I'm glad for him. Not ready to call him our best lineman, though. Or if that's even really a compliment.

I'd like to keep Peppers and Lewis out there and see how they develop. Amazing how irrelevant Countess has become.

D looked pretty good. Nice to see Peppers out there--kid has an edge to him. Lots of Miami receivers getting open, though, which was concerning. Lucky for us, Hendrix is not Everett Golson and missed a lot of opportunities. I give our front seven credit for some of those misses.

Clown show, but I'll take the 'W'.
Green looked really good, though. As did Butt. With Funchess back, we'll have some weapons. I'm not going to say that DG shouldn't be starting, but part of me would really like to see what Shane could do with those weapons and the first team as a whole. Shane has a comfort in the pocket that DG will just never have.
