"Northwestern fans can be both heartened and disheartened by the loss to Minnesota just like how nineteenth-century resurrectionists were heartened when they pried a heart from a freshly-buried corpse and then disheartened it when they sold it to a disreputable anatomist."

And thank God for Drew Dileo. If it weren't for his miracle 20-yard catch in 2012, we'd be look at seven straight losses to MSU. Think about that for a minute.

Ohio State is in the thick of the playoff race, admission to which is based on mostly subjective criteria. So, yeah, they're trying to look better. Don't hate the player.

You're dramatically understating Hoke's ineptitude. Nobody in college football does less with more.

I used to think this was true. I really did. But now, with this staff, "mistake" is my assumption every time. They've lost the benefit of the doubt.

And the game was over by the end of the third. So, I guess we were in the game . . . against Minnesota . . . at home . . . for a half.

Gedeon always looks good. It'd be nice to see him play more.

In positive news, we've moved up to 72nd and 86th in the country in fewest tackles for loss and sacks allowed, respectively. Progress!

Yeah, but that's only half of our games. In all the other ones they've been pretty average.

We were in the ND game?
We were in the Minnesota game?
Despite the fact that these are ridiculous assertions, should we be satisfied simply being "in" games against teams like Utah and Rutgers? It's so sad that we're looking for silver linings by claiming that we had a chance against Rutgers.

What the hell does this mean?
The team was 2-4. The balance of the a game was on a knife's edge. And you're coaching for yours and your staff's jobs. When would it ever be more necessary?

Well, if there's one thing this staff has proven adept at, it's taking Army All-American defenders and turning them into collegiate nonfactors.
As high schoolers, Countess, Pipkins, Dymonte, Ross, and Jenkins-Stone might have taken out insurance policies to protect against injuries, but I don't think those policies cover Hoke.

Has it worked well with Green against a Power 5 opponent? I don't think so. He's had some success here and there, but I don't remember him doing much against real teams on first and ten plays. Maybe once the game has already been out of hand and the opponent is conceding the run to protect against big plays.

No. We have immense talent and the best in institutional resources that any head coach could want. All we need is someone who is marginally competent, knowledgable, and able to adapt on the fly.

|1 week 21 hours ago||I think the "real deal"||
I think the "real deal" answer is simply that this is all he knows. The decision to structure our offense this way is the same decision to maintain an antiquated punt formation--it's what Brady is comfortable with. This is, in large part, what makes a staff "good" or not: the breadth of things they know or are "comfortabe with." I think Brady's football knowledge is severely limited and instead of giving full rein to his OC, he keeps things within the parameters of what he's comfortable with.
|1 week 23 hours ago||Honest question, why do we||
Honest question, why do we ever run up the middle on first down? It virtually never works and typically results in second and long. Last night, we started the game with a lot of misdirection on first down, and it was working well. Norfleet jet sweep, five yards. Fake handoff, screen to Smith for 8 yards. Funchess bomb. Then we started with the Smith up the middle stuff on first down and things went to hell.
The last Power 5 game in which our offense looked good was Ohio State last year, and, in that game, we started the game with great variety on first down plays. Tons of fake handoffs and quick passes that just tore through the Ohio State defense that was loaded up to stuff the middle (like all defenses are against us). Why don't we go back to that. Fake handoff, quick slant. Fake handoff, screen pass. Jet sweep. Keep doing this on first down until they consistently stop it. Then try an i-form zone run.
Why are we going away from the only thing that has worked for us on offense in the last 12 months?

Remember when he chased down Stefon Diggs on the sideline in the Army All-American game? I thought he was going to be one of the great ones at U-M. Now he's fighting to even see the field as a junior and is way on the outside of making an NFL roster.
