You will notice that after receiving the snap, Gardner fakes the bubble screen to the receiver in the flat. Thus, the Borges troll. I caught it live during the game and about died from laughter.

Sure I'll be sad that we aren't getting the 5* recruits any more, and perhaps the talent will take longer to develop. However, I just can't get on the "pay these kids" bandwagon. College is expensive, so is room & board, as well as the training facilities, etc. The entitlement culture could certainly ruin college football. I'm glad this is they tone set by the Big Ten commisioner.
Hockey and Baseball are the two sports that come to my mind regarding kids being drafted out of high school and having the ability to choose to go to college or sign with a semi-pro team that will get them ready for the big leagues. Basketball is still trying to find its way... I suspect Football will probably be like Basketball is today in 5 years.

639 (SNYHD) SportsNet New York HD:
It might get blacked out... will have to see on Saturday. If so, there is always the one day GameDay purchase.
|1 year 41 weeks ago||Not 396 - ABC East||
The Sports Pack is mostly the 600 digit channels like Fox Sports. The channel I see the game playing on that prompted me to purchase the Sport Pack right away is 639 (SNYHD) SportsNet New York HD:
My only worry is that I'll have to purchase the one day GamePlan showing of the Michigan game for $35 anyway. I know that Pro sports are usually blacked out on these Sports Pack channels, though "some" college games are available regardless. I'll see how it shakes out on Saturday.
I was going to purchase the Sports Pack anyway since the Red Wings season has started. I always record the replays of the games (again, live games are blacked out) and only watch them if the Wings won.

While this channel is listed on my guide, I can't watch it. I live in AZ. How are you able to get it?
|1 year 41 weeks ago||I have DirecTV||
While I have the Ultimate package, it does not include ABC East (I live in Phoenix and due to law I cannot view that channel since I have a local ABC channel). Therefore, I added the Sports Pack Premium Channels... that way I not only get to watch Michigan defeat Conneticut, I also get to watch the rebroadcast of Red Wings games on Fox Sports Detroit. WOO, my favoirte time of year! I love having DirecTV.
|1 year 42 weeks ago||My thoughts exactly||
If you are releasing guys downfield before the punt is away, then they aren't back there blocking for your punter.
No matter how your guys line up (old school or new school), they need to block until they hear the thump from the punters foot and then stay in their lanes down the field to make the tackle. Don't do that... you are asking for it.
|1 year 42 weeks ago||Defense||
I just want to see the D Line get some sacks. I'm going to get really tired of all the talk about how bad a job the D Line is doing if they go through another week without much production.
I'd also like to see Ross making some plays. I really wanted him to make that interception agains ND last Saturday.
If they get a shutout, that would be great too. However, I'm not going to count on it since I fully expect a lot of the young guys will be playing due to the big lead.

Shaun Rogers who once played for the Lions was able to dunk the ball during the early part of his career. No joke:
|1 year 42 weeks ago||Many ways to skin a cat||
In your diagram above, I think that looks about right. It seems to me that it would be much more leathal if Funchess does indeed release downfield as a receiver. If the SAM crashes down in an attempt to tackle Fitz, then the next time you run this play you can instead use play action (believing the SAM will crash down again). If he realizes the ball was not handed to Fitz then perhaps Gardner can shake him and run for yardage, or if he does follow Funch or Fitz, Gardner could hit a different receiver or run. The way M was running that play gives you multiple ways to attack the defense.
During the ND game I was wondering about blocking assignments as well. I'm no expert, but I feel like Miller is a mobile lineman, why not move him around the two guards more?. I felt like the guards stood up OK when blocking Nix straight up. When they ran those outside zone runs, Nix would just hop in Miller's back pocket and crash through his gap. Especially at the end of the game when they ran the ball left twice in a row... Nix got two TFLs. It seemed impossible to me that Kalis was going to be able to manuever around Nix even with help from Miller. Why not have Glasgow crack back to the right on Nix and pull Miller around to pick up one of those blitzing LBs? Doesn't matter since Gardner was able to run for the 1st to seal the game.
|1 year 51 weeks ago||Disagree on blocked kicks||
I recall Lloyd Carr mentioning something about Garret Rivas not getting the ball up high enough for his kicks, resulting in blocks early in his career. Sure, blocking is a huge part of kicking, but it is that way for all facets of football. You can have a wide open hole and a running back will still run into the backs of his OL.
I'm glad that Gibbons has turned it around. I feel confident in our kicking game going into this season. Can't wait for it to begin!!!

|2 years 1 week ago||I'm also in Phoenix||
Too bad you didn't ask BEFORE your time off. I highly recommend a couple days in Denver/Fort Collins/Boulder. So many breweries. Plenty of outdoor activities. A flight from Phoenix is not bad, and it sure is nice to get out of this heat.
You could always take a trip up north to the mountains to get out of the heat. Hang out in Sedona or Flagstaff if you need city streets and activities. Have you visited Canyon Lake, Saguaro Lake, or Lake Pleasant. I've rented boats out on Lake Pleasant plenty of times.
Since you are sunburnt, I'll skip the hiking spiel. So you are then left with indoor activities. Bowling, movies, try a new restaurant. Some of the museums around here can be entertaining.
As for me, I like beer. I highly recommend taking a cab to a location that has numerous beers on tap. I like the Hungry Monk in Chandler, the guy who runs it is from Livonia I believe. I also like Four Peaks brewery... they always have an interesting food special. Wednesdays they have cask conditioned ale, my favorite. I swear I'm going to get out to Ashley's in Ann Arbor next year.
I wish I had some extra time off. I feel like all I do is work. One of these days I am finally going to get out to Lake Havasu, down to Rocky Point, and out to Monument Valley.

I just want to see the DT, S, and SDE positions filled with big time recruits. The following prospects will fit the bill:

|4 years 23 weeks ago||My Thoughts on the Updated Depth Chart||
I like most of what I see, especially on offense. Although, I don't agree with everything on defense. I suspect the coaches will run a 4-3 the majority of the time.
1.) I don't believe RVB will be moved to DE. He is needed at DE because I don't see anyone other than RVB and Roh being a dependable starter. I'm not sure about Black staying at DE. He looks more like a DT to me most of the time. He needs some work before he is going to be able to hold up against the run at DT though. It's possible a true freshman gets some time at DE in 2011.
2.) I suspect that Ash, Campbell, Talbott or Washington will be able to step in as the second DT to Martin. I like Ash's chances.
3.) I suspect C. Gordon and Furman will play WLB with Jones as the starter. C Gordon will be an asset when blitzing LBs.
4.) I suspect C. Johnson will start at SS over Kovacs
5.) FS is a HUGE question mark... as is CB. I suspect it will be Robinson over Vinopal at FS, with Floyd and Woolfolk as the starting CBs (Avery as the Nickleback)
The 2012 recruiting class may be Michigan's most highly rated class in a long time... as long as Hoke can pull off 7-8 wins in 2011.
|4 years 25 weeks ago||Ugh... too much NFL lately||
9-3 is more like it... that is what I was expecting next season from RR
I don't care about the Bowl game, unless it's for the National Championship or is for the Rose Bowl... which I would want a win.
|4 years 25 weeks ago||How can Hoke win me over?||
I suspect we'll be hoping for Harbaugh again four years from now. Although, I'll give Hoke my support for now. Here's how he can win me over:
1.) Add some 4 or 5 star recruits to what is currently in this class (Zettel, Frost or a DT), and most importantly a talented Safety
2.) Go 9-7 next year (as that is what I expected from RR this next season)
3.) Improve the defense from the bottom of the Big Ten, to the middle (or better) of the Big Ten.
|4 years 30 weeks ago||Definitely Excited for Next Season||
I'm hopeful that another big body (Ash or Washington) can step up and become the second DT next season in a 4 man line. I beleive the coaches decided on a 3 man front last spring when they saw what they had returning that season (and injury to Heininger). I'm very hopeful that they'll decide to go to a 4 man front this next spring. It's not that I think the 3 man front is bad, I just don't think it is as easy to recruit for as a traditional 4 man front.
Martin will definitely be back next year IMHO. Another thing I believe will happen is Black will eventually become a DT, though maybe not next year.
Possible starting line next season:
There should be decent depth at DE next year if Roh becomes a true DE next season. I am concerned about the DT recruiting under Rodriguez thus far. I'm hopeful that the young guys are learning well during their redshirt year... and maybe one of them will be able to demand extra playing time.
|4 years 30 weeks ago||I was a little down...||
I read the news earlier today that verbal commit WR Conway was going to have to go the JUCO route. We all know what usually happens to kids that want to play at Michigan, but have to go the JUCO route - they rarely make it on campus.
Now I see that WR Lucien has high interest in Michigan! The class of 2011 sure seems to have a good group of WRs! What a great couple highlight tapes I've watched already on Devin. Hopefully there will be a highlight tape for Michigan WR Devin Lucien's All American season in 2014 or 2015! Would be awesome to have another Heisman winner from the WR position!
Looking forward to a number of "Hello:xxx" posts to read before Christmas! GO BLUE!!
|4 years 31 weeks ago||Agree with OP||
I also do not want RR to get fired after only 2 1/2 years on the job. He needs to be given at least 1 more year. I'm not so sure I want to go back to 3 yards and cloud of dust after witnessing the spread 'n shred under RR.
Although, I am concerned about recruiting. RR needs another good defensive haul this year. The defense will still be young next year, but hopefully they will be improved. Otherwise, it would be wise to think about a change next year.
|4 years 31 weeks ago||I'm concerned||
Rodriguez and crew have had a lot of misses when they don't have much room for mistakes. The future of this team under Rodriguez may easily be decided with this next recruiting class.
|4 years 31 weeks ago||Scout||
I used the Scout recruit search to put together my post.
The rivals search crashes on me too often.
|4 years 31 weeks ago||I disagree - Though I do like the avatar pic!||
Pulling in the highly ranked recruits from instate is just as important as brining in talented kids from FL, TX, OH, and PA.
Kids from instate will often have a better understanding of the school's tradition, will have family nearby when needed, and will often stay all four years.
|4 years 31 weeks ago||Let me point out the obvious||
I didn't mention many prospects from out of state in my post. There is a reason for this. With Michigan's record since Rodriguez took over, it gets more difficult each year to pull in the out of state recruits. I don't want Michigan to only recruit atheletes from instate. That is ridiculous. Although, I certainly want them to obtain commitments from instate talent each year.
Instate recruiting does indicate what the perception of your program is to atheletes in your state. Let me give you an example. Lets say Brandon Graham recived an offer from Michigan and Central Michigan. Which school would you think he would pick, and why is that? In recruiting, perception is everything. When the kids instate decide that MSU is the better football school over Michigan, the rest of the country will believe the same as well.
|4 years 31 weeks ago||I don't agree with you completely||
I'm sure the following players would have helped Michigan in 2010 if they were wearing Maize n Blue:
I'm pretty sure we wouldn't mind seeing a commitment from OLB Thomas, WR Arnett, CB Showers, and K Brindza this year as well.
Instate recruiting is a good baramoter for the state of your program. If you don't have the respect of the atheletes instate, then you won't be successful. When you have to circle the wagons, you need to be able to swing the ones closest to you to your side.
Don't get me wrong. A lot of the time a higher rated recruit from out of state may be higher on your board. That's fine, if you take him over the guy instate. But when you miss on both, as Rodriguez has done a number of times since he was hired, your roster takes a beating. It doesn't help that Carr missed on the out of state and instate guys frequently in the secondary and DL just before he retired as well.
|4 years 31 weeks ago||Answer||
It is my belief that instate recruiting is a good barometer to measure the state of your program against. If your program is not viewed well within your own state, it will be reflected in the desire of your state's top atheletes desire to attend your school. Often times an offensive recruit finds themself on the defensive side of the ball.
My focus is on the current state of the team and the near future. Clearly a good number of the top recruits we missed out on from the state of Michigan, this year and last could help this team. I'm sure everyone would take Brindza over what we have kicking FGs now, and I won't mention the names on Defense we've missed on instate recently.
|4 years 34 weeks ago||Exactly||
This is on Avery and Vinopal. Tough to learn for a young DB to maintain their zone when they don't think anyone else is going to be in the area. Gotta have your head on a swivel. Helps to see the play on film prior to actually facing it in game situation.
I'm not gonna harp on the kids for making this mistake... twice in the same game. Avery and the other freshman have been guilty of vacating their zones a number of times. I believe they'll get it with time. Hopefully it'll come before Michigan plays their final two games, but it might not be until the bowl or next season.
|4 years 34 weeks ago||LT #71 for Illinois tipping plays?||
When I rewatched the game yesterday, I noticed that the ESPN "Impact Players" segment at the begining of the game mentioned #71 for Illinois, Jeff Allen . As I watched the game, I wanted to pay attention to their LT to see how well our players performed against their best lineman.
What I quickly realized is that #71 often switched sides... from LT to RT. Then I noticed that Illinois would run the ball 75% of the time to the side that #71 was on (on passing plays he would normally match up against RVB). I say 75% because I couldn't find him on every single snap on running plays, and also because Illinois got away from that a bit in the 2nd half. But dang... that first half I was calling almost every play depending on where he lined up (run right, run left).
Is this normal for Illinois? Did the Michigan defensive coaches ever pick up on this?

|4 years 37 weeks ago||That Would Be Nice||
If Demens can improve on his Iowa performance, that will be good. If he happens to help Mouton play better, that would be a bonus. If neither goes down, it would be par for the course this season.
|4 years 37 weeks ago||Huge Guess Here||
I might be way off, but I would bet Demens not seeing much playing time has something to do with this, and Demens being a roomate of BooBoo prior to BooBoo getting kicked off the team.
The old saying remains true: "Show me your friends, and I'll show you your future".
I hope Demens has turned it around, and helps get this defense performing the way we all want it to.
|4 years 37 weeks ago||Agree with OP||
Good post, nice to see so many positive posts after another tough loss. Can't wait to see this team start firing on all cylanders. It seems that the coaches are bringing in some talented players and they are begining to take some positive steps forward in their development.
|4 years 37 weeks ago||Demens should continue to start||
I liked what Demens brought to the defense. While he isn't the fastest LB on the team, he can certainly bring the wood. I think Ezeh will be an adequate backup for Demens the rest of this season. Hopefully Demens will improve with more playing time.
|4 years 38 weeks ago||I must agree||
When I watch the defense at the snap of the ball in slow motion with Demens on the field, he immediately flies towards the RB. If you watch Roh, Ezeh, and Mouton they take a few steps/hops and react to what they read (Ezeh rarely attacks the LOS on run plays though, he kinda hops to the hole and gets blocked).
I'm not quite sure if I've ever seen Demens drop into a zone. Maybe he's never been in on a pass play, but I would think there was one against BGSU. Seriously, watch his feet at the snap of the ball... immediately moving twards the LOS.
Until I have more data, I would have to agree with Spath. If I was the coach, Demens would play MLB in the 3-3-5 on first and second down with Ezeh relieving him for passing situations. Any time that the offense passed on 1st or 2nd down, I'd tell Demens that his responsibility is to rush/sack the QB while changing up the zone scheme's behind him with the other guys (occasionally sending 5 with Roh, Mouton, or Johnson/Gordon as extra blitzer).
Demens must get more time. He would be an asset in the run game (except maybe with misdirection run plays). Less yardage gained on 1st and 2nd down equals more third and longs for Ezeh to play against.
|4 years 39 weeks ago||I like Rodriguez||
I was really surprised by the hire of Rodriguez, considering the personnel Michigan had on the roster. I assumed that T. Pryor was going to commit after Rodriguez was hired, and was really concerned when he did not. Would we have gotten Denard if Pryor had committed? Don't know, but I sure am glad we've got Denard Robinson to represent the Michigan program on the national stage.
I'm sure the Defense will improve as recruits see that the offense will score points. After that it's up to the coaches to prepare them... I like what I've seen thru the first couple of years. I can't wait to see what the future brings.
|4 years 39 weeks ago||Stay Positive||
I agree mostly with the OP. I would like to see GERG not rush less than four at all times (OK, maybe if it is 3rd and 20). Playing soft to cover up the inexperience and talent deficiency is fine, but allowing the QB a ton of time to find the hole out there is not what I would call a wise decision.
I really like the package where Roh, Van Bergen, Martin, and Black rush the passer. That may be a preview of the defense we will see next season. Having Roh drop into coverage from time to time (even though that is not his strongest skill) is OK, but please bring Mouton or someone else to keep the pressure on the QB.
|4 years 39 weeks ago||Agreed||
I agree with the OP. Although, I disagree about putting too much stock in Denard. Yes the O-line allows him to make plays, but Denard is truly a special talent.
I've been very impressed with the Offensive and Defensive line thus far. The coaches really seem to know what they are doing. I'm eager to see what the future holds.
Speaking of the trenches... I'd like to see Roh rush the passer more often. Having Roh rush along with Martin, Van Bergen, and Banks/Black seems to be our best way to force a quick throw (as long as the offense doesn't max protect). It looks to me that we're playing soft in the secondary anyway, so why not force a quicker pass?

I'd like to see the defense cause a turnover on UConn's first possession.
One play later, I'd like to hear the announcer's say: "If the UConn defense can't contain #16, then this game might be over quickly".
I would really like to see a blowout in the Big House re-dedication game.
|4 years 47 weeks ago||Exactly||
I believe Michigan will find gold in one of the RB's on the roster. If I had to guess at this point, I'd say Cox will be the every down back, Smith the 3rd down back, and Hopkins will be short yardage (with the other RB's getting some garbage time). Something tells me Shaw is not going to be eligable this season.
I'm not sold on the O-line being better this year. If Molk stays healthy, Lewan and Omameh pan out - then yes. I need to see it to believe it though.
As for Hemingway, mono was in his true Sophmore season. Last year was his redshirt sophmore season, played in 11 games - started 9. He was just banged up all year. I'm not really sure this team has an outside receiver that will be both productive and healthy all year.
With that said, I do expect Michigan will have a better record this year compared to last. Unfortunately, there are too many question marks and this is still a young team. I am hopeful that Rodriguez will be retained at least one more season after this. Most fans are expecting a bit too much this year.

Since you went there... I'll go there.
Why don't you read the bill, instead of regurgitating what you heard on the news:
For those that don't remember, some of the terrorists that flew planes into the World Trade Center were in Tucson, AZ learning to fly planes. They were here illegally.
If you think that the bill shouldn't exist because of possible discrimination... then I suppose officers shouldn't carry guns because somebody might get shot. How about a little faith in those that try to keep everyone safe day after day. If the officer breaks the law, take them to court and get them out of their uniform because they obviously don't deserve to wear it.

A long while back, Michigan and Chicago used to play on Thanksgiving weekend. This game often decided the conference champion.
There was a brief period where Michigan and Notre Dame did not play annually in the not so distant past.
Things change. If Sparty wants to avoid playing Michigan, it is possible that they would be forced to meet up in the 12th game anyway. Then the mudhole stompage in Sparty's rear would commence!!!
|5 years 11 weeks ago||Sounds Fictitious||
Would you prefer Iowa State?
Maybe I should have checked for Cincinnati here first:
Though as I mentioned in the origional post, I was going off information available in Wikipedia.
|5 years 11 weeks ago||Good Points||
These are things I considered. I just can't think of who to move out of the West to even it up with the East. It's the middle tear teams that don't stack up well. Although, wouldn't that provide Notre Dame more incentive to join the conference? I think Ohio State and Michigan belong in the same conference, so until someone provides me with a better alternative, it stays.
As for playing at pro stadiums. Take Heinz and Ford Field for example... under 70k seats. I'd take the Big Ten's top three stadiums over those. This is the reason why I leave it up to the coaches to decide, I'm sure they will choose the sites that are best for their fans and their own travel arangements.

This team won't win any games if the defense can't defend against the pass. How about Turner, Floyd, Emilien, Gordon, doesn't matter really who.
I already get the feeling that the LB play will be much improved over last year. Hopefully Tate also makes a good jump this year, and cuts down on turnovers. Truly, I'm hoping for improvement from everyone.
|5 years 15 weeks ago||Short yardage back||
3rd down back is the guy you bring in that can run and catch (usually 3rd and long) as you need to make the defense worry about both the run and the catch.
You are referring to a short yardage back or goal-line back. I would guess that is Cox, Hopkins, or Moundros now that Minor is gone.
Check this link out:
|5 years 15 weeks ago||Natural catching ability||
Natural catching ability: Some guys have it... some don't. V. Smith is the former.
I also saw him block decently in the passing game last year... so with the expected improvement this year, yeah 3rd down RB.
V. Smith TOTALLY makes me think of D. Sproles. I just don't see him being able to carry the load of being an "every down back".

|5 years 15 weeks ago||Nice Halo||
I like the paint job, but I'd put my money on Mike Cox this year as the starter. Shaw and Smith as the "change of pace" and "3rd down" backs, respectively. Touissaint will surely get his time... though I don't think it will be this year.
|5 years 15 weeks ago||Scheme doesn't matter||
Besides the QB position... scheme doesn't matter to NFL teams. One coaches' plays and philosophy rarely matches the next coach.
What matters most is having good tape, and having good combine numbers. If the college coach can put the players in position to have a good highlight tape, and if the player is a good athelete who puts up good combine numbers... he'll go high in the draft.
Quarterbacks are the only players that really get affected by their college coaches' scheme. To go high in the draft as a QB, the team is going to want a QB that can step in to their system and execute early... otherwise they are deemed a "project". Especially if they never take a snap from under center. Thankfully, Rodriguez does have Michigan QB's take snaps from under the center from time to time.
