Go to Pizza Bob's (814 State Street). Convenient location. Cheap. Best milkshakes in town, by far. Killer sub: The Favorite. The place is tiny. I suggest carrying the food to the game or, better yet, eating it in the Law Quad, which is a very short walk away, and which is a fantastic spot.

2 years 33 weeks ago  I think you're right about

I think you're right about the neg-banging. Critics of RR, especially, always seem to get punished just for voicing dissent, no matter how reasoned it may be. Seems to defeat the purpose of a great blog like this one. Without the critics, there's nothing to debate (other than uniform colors) and the place becomes an echo-chamber. Can't we reserve the neg-banging for the true flamers and miscreants?

2 years 33 weeks ago I think it's a blessing in

I think it's a blessing in disguise. Let Cox et al have their shot (against a porous defense). I like Shaw fine. But I don't think he's The Man. He still has a lot of East/West traits. So let's see what the other fellas can do before we get to the meat of the schedule.

2 years 34 weeks ago At the start of the season, I

At the start of the season, I figured:

OSU

IOWA

WISKY

PSU

M/MSU (tie)

Now I'd flip M/MSU with PSU. I just don't see PSU scoring on anyone; its defense is good but not great. I actually see that as a winnable game for us. We normally do pretty well there, whiteout or not. And I see us winning one of two with Wisky/Iowa. Good teams. But neither is scary. Pretty much all Iowa game (in the B10) are close. And we know that Wisky, in its heart, fears us.

2 years 34 weeks ago Mea culpa. Too much coffee

Mea culpa. Too much coffee today. Time to log-off and go back to my job operating heavy machinery.

Shame he got dinged on his first play.

2 years 34 weeks ago Thank you. Guess my search

Thank you. Guess my search didn't come up with the chart, which is a shocking thing to see. Anyone know of any other major scofflaws outside of Alabama/SEC? God knows there could be some in and around Big 12 country. But maybe not. Thanks again.

2 years 34 weeks ago Fingers crossed. A shoulder

Fingers crossed. A shoulder injury after two runs, untouched? Please tell me his freshman-year roommates weren't Junior Hemingway and Carlos Brown.

2 years 34 weeks ago Should Dee go elsewhere

Should Dee go elsewhere (dammit), which recruit would likely take his spot? I'm assuming Justice Hayes is not a soft ND recruit. Or is he? Lord knows he liked Michigan.

2 years 34 weeks ago Their defense likely sucks. I

Their defense likely sucks. I can't see IU winning this one. But those receivers, coupled with an able qb, sure were a nightmare for us last year. IU's receivers are by far the fastest we'lve seen. And, btw, I can totally understand the gum-throwing incident: Warren's game-saving int was certainly a, um, generous call. Funny, all the threads re ref conspiracies fail to note plays like that one.

2 years 34 weeks ago This is all very helpful.

This is all very helpful. Thank you.

2 years 34 weeks ago Everybody agrees the refs

Everybody agrees the refs bungle too many calls. Everyone knows home teams have an edge. But the real implication, in threads such as this one, is that refs are aligned in some sort of broad anti-Michigan effort. I'm quite sure fans of M's could find just as many iffy calls to complain about. (Do you really think a tiny team like UMass gets the benefit of the doubt in the Big House? Please.) Every team's fans think the refs are out to get their team. It's ridiculous, and such complaint's make fans look defensive and paranoid. Which is the nature of fandom, I realize. But there ought to be limits.

2 years 34 weeks ago Yes, please, how about a

Yes, please, how about a moratorium on officiating threads, barring some monumental, game-changing blunder by a zebra. Bitching about the officials is loser-talk.

2 years 34 weeks ago I agree with maiznbob. All

I agree with maiznbob. All three qbs were obviously terrific yesterday. And I think DG deserves extra kudos, since his stats don't include the two straight tds he essentially threw. But it also seems fairly likely that Kennedy might have had a nice day against that lousy defense. Making large judgments about our offense, based on the BG, reminds me of the judgments people made post-Delaware State. You just can't.

2 years 34 weeks ago Speaking of freshmen: Did

Speaking of freshmen: Did anyone notice that Brian Griese (bless him) mispronounced the names of half the players from his own alma mater? He needs more PT.

2 years 34 weeks ago I think possibly he's

I think possibly he's referencing, in addition to Gallon's fumbliness, a certain lack of judgment when deciding whether or not to catch balls near his own endzone.

2 years 34 weeks ago I do the same thing with my

I do the same thing with my buddies. One roadie per season. I'd vote for Lincoln, by a mile. That's a real football/B10 atmosphere. Historic. Dallas is just a big, generic city in sweltering Texas. No atmosphere whatsoever. And, if you're talking budget, Dallas is a much more expensive location to visit.

2 years 34 weeks ago I've been to most of the B10

I've been to most of the B10 stadiums. Most of the fans I've found to be smart-asses, but in a generally friendly way. (Except for OSU fans, too many of whom tend to be, in a word, vile.) PSU fans, for all their noise, are really hospitable. So are Iowa fans -- the difference being that Iowa fans get blind drunk. Last year, after the game, the campus was littered with passed-out drunks.

Indiana has a wonderful campus. But the football atmosphere is, frankly, virtually non-existent. The fans just don't care very much. Makes for a peaceful but somewhat boring game. This week, when a friend of mine called IU to inquire about tickets, the box-office person said, "Oh, just show up at game-time. We'll have plenty."

2 years 34 weeks ago Just think it's important to

Just think it's important to note that, when a paper publishes damning info about another team's coach, most everyone here (except one) promptly assumes the newspaper is correct and the coach is guilty. I'm not trying to be antagonistic here, really. I just think that that many of the fans who complain about media biases -- and I agree that there are biases, and that the Freep overstepped -- tend to project their own biases onto the media. Maybe it would be wise to first let the story play out a little, see where it goes? All I'm saying.

2 years 35 weeks ago I still don't fully

I still don't fully understand why it's so damned hard to recruit an able kicker. I know, I know: the mental aspect is important. But, given all the variables that go with recruiting other positions (level of competition, surrounding talent), shouldn't high school kickers be among the easiest to assess? Either they kick well or they don't. Either they do so under pressure or they don't. For Pete's sake.

Sure, sometimes a good high school kicker won't pan-out. But certain colleges always seem to find solid kickers, so it's not a total crapshoot. And, finally, everyone always says we shouldn't "waste" scholarships on kickers -- until kickers start costing us games. They're worth it.

2 years 35 weeks ago "Just imagine when things

"Just imagine when things come together and we're in the top 25 defensively with our elite offense." Key word: "imagine." We've got a few promising young defensive players, but nowhere near enough.  I defy anyone to say, straight-faced, that next season's defense will be much better than this year's.

2 years 35 weeks ago Michigan or Auburn? Always

Michigan or Auburn? Always amazes me how random a recruit's top colleges can be. It would be one thing if the kid were from Alabama. Auburn is a semi- traditional power, I guess. Beyond that, though, Michigan and Auburn have nothing in common. It barely has a library.

2 years 35 weeks ago Is it really that ridiculous?

Is it really that ridiculous? Really? Will it still be ridiculous if (god forbid) Sparty beats us? Our D will remain mediocre at best. Hopefully, we're an 8-win. 7-5 might save RR. Or it might not. Plus, the unresolved sanctions issue. The situation is tenuous. Nobody's suggesting a mid-season coaching-change. But it would be foolish to not contemplate a Plan B for next year (given the ridiculous last-minute chaos we saw post-Lloyd.) And Harbaugh might be the guy. He'd have to eat a little crow. But he would.

2 years 35 weeks ago Stanford just seems to be

Stanford just seems to be steaming in the right direction, after having been dreadful, pre-JH. And it really does matter than Stanford has by far the most restrictive academic standards on the P10/12/45. It is not a conference known for its high student standards. But Stanford is. Recruiting, at M, would be a piece of cake for him.

Theoretically, I'm mean. Hypothetically.

2 years 35 weeks ago I think his in-game coaching

I think his in-game coaching has been, by and large, good. Aggressive without being Brian Kelly-ish stupid. Mixing up the receivers. Keeping the opposition on its heels. The problem has been his recruiting, and his ability to keep the recruits. Despite what the apologists say, the attrition has been a real problem. And that, in turn, may well scare off future recruits.

2 years 35 weeks ago Precisely.

Precisely.

2 years 35 weeks ago I'm more worried about the

I'm more worried about the next game, at Indiana, a team that last year came within one (arguable) interception of beating us in Ann Arbor. I'm going to Bloomington. Will there by any MGB presence there?

2 years 35 weeks ago I feel a little guilty about

I feel a little guilty about it. But I have to admit: every time I see Harbaugh's team play well, I think it bodes well for us in the near future. He's the man.

2 years 35 weeks ago Mark May did indeed call for

Mark May did indeed call for Gerg's head.

2 years 35 weeks ago The conclusion I would draw

The conclusion I would draw is that M, ND, and Sparty share a lot more similarities than dissimilarities. We're both capable of good things but also deeply flawed. I suspect we'll all end up having more or less the same records in the end.
