I love the posters who just flatly say "of course it's rigged." As if they've seen enough evidence to conclude that there is a widespread conspiracy involving multiple refs. The reddit video is a statistically meaningless sampling. You'd need to study games across the board. And of course the video doesn't take into consideration bad calls that may have gone against the Lakers. If you're gonna be a conspiracy theorist, at least bring persuasive evidence. The reason there aren't more mass conspiracies is simple: it takes a lot of people to a) pull them off and b) keep their mouths shut. People, in the end, rarely stay quiet. |

The comical thing is... Most medical experts agree that HGH, if it works at all, provides only the slightest advantage to athletes. Runners might lose one/tenth of a second off their times; injured athletes might heal slightly faster. For pro athletes, I guess, every little bit helps. But HGH isn't making football players heal in half the time. The science is clear on that. The "evidence" of HGH's magical healing properties is largely anecdotal and tends to come via doctors and companies who make a killing peddling HGH to people vulnerable to the placebo effect. |

You're so right. Among the must f-ed up thing about Teo's "love story" is the degree to which people hailed him for playing in a football game rather than attend the funeral of his girlfriend who just died of leukemia. Most backward-ass "values" I've seen in a long time. |
| 18 weeks 1 day ago | God, is there a single honest |
God, is there a single honest AD left in America? Given what we know already, it's inconceivable that Teo (and, by extension, ND) are blameless victims. The kid told elaborate lies to the media, and the photos of his "gf" can be traced directly back to one of Teo's own buddies. So, unless you believe one of the guy's oldest homies was simultaneously orchestrating a massive catfish hoax on Teo, then you must conclude that Teo was in on it. And ND knew all this a while ago. Swarbrick will be out by February. |

And note how he's still trying to spin things, via Oprah and calculated media leaks about how he "might" come clean. He's pathetic. |
| 19 weeks 1 day ago | Next fall's MSU team will be |
Next fall's MSU team will be down a peg or two from the 2012 version. Ditto ND, which we get under the lights. Nebraska -- a team Michigan thrashed in 2011 and would have beaten in 2012, barring injury-fest -- performs poorly on the road. And NW seems to perform most poorly when much is expected of it. I think it's reasonable expect M to win 3 out of 4. Overall, I see 10-2. Worst case: 9-3. Rose Bowl berth depending on the OSU outcome. Normalcy, restored. |

Too many people are just writing off Fitz. Granted, he had a forgettable season. But he came in late -- his own fault, yes -- and was running behind a very meh line that didn't open many holes for any other backs, either. And then, of course, the leg. But he's shown himself to be a very good back in the right circumstances. And I expect he'll come back very hungry. That's assuming he heals properly, of course. But there's no reason to assume he won't. I'm excited about a running game that includes Lewan, Fitz, and Green/Smith. |

| 20 weeks 3 days ago | Yes, USC is neighbored by |
Yes, USC is neighbored by some occasionally sketchy neighborhoods. And, yes, there have been a small handful of violent crimes in the USC area. At the same time, though, Compton, like Harlem, is a large and mostly benign area that gets grossly broad-brushed -- typically by whites who've never been there -- as a giant gangbanger war-zone. In fact, USC is a pretty impressive place whose students tend to be smart enough to navigate their way through/around the rougher areas and toward the many safe areas just beyond. Students feel quite safe and comfortable there. In fact, USC attracts more affluent and coddled Angeleno kids than does UCLA, which is located in lily-white Westwood.

| 20 weeks 3 days ago | Sounds like a bit of |
Sounds like a bit of collective wishful thinking here. I'd love to see Kelly leave ND as much as the next guy, but I find it unlikely he'll be the first choice of most NFL teams. I'm just not sure he necessarily translates to the NFL, especially on a personality front. Hope I'm wrong, though. I'd love to see another round of transition turmoil at ND, especially given the number of players they'll lose to graduation this year. Plus the standard attrition rates that accompany any coaching change. Plus the destabilizing effect change will have on the current recruiting class -- a transition, just a few weeks prior to Signing Day, will shake apples from the tree, while leaving ND little time to land recruits of equal value. (Don't we know it.) Unless, of course, ND promotes a coach from within. What's the likelihood that Diaco gets bumped up? |
| 21 weeks 12 hours ago | I love this prevailing |
I love this prevailing assumption that playing a second-tier bowl game in Florida (or anywhere else) gives Michigan a substantial recruiting bump in that area. It's nonsense. How many blue-chip recruits will lean toward Michigan because they played a game in Tampa? None. |

Although last month Green said he plans to pick a school "soon," and despite vague assertions here that he will be an early enrolee, I don't believe Green himself has confirmed that he'll be enrolling early. Not recently, anyway. If he really were about to enroll, we'd be seeing much more breathless coverage on the recruiting sites, which dearly need page-views during the holidays/dead period. |
| 22 weeks 4 days ago | Consider the possibility that |
Consider the possibility that M soured on Treadwell, rather than vice-versa. After all, the kid did say M's coaches hadn't been in touch with him recently. Could be there's just something they don't like about him. |
| 23 weeks 1 hour ago | Isn't this just the |
Isn't this just the difference between "can" and "will"? Teams, thanks to medical redshirts and early admissions, can often find ways to cram in an extra recruit or two. (Except when they're SEC teams -- in which case, an extra seven or ten). To take more than 25 this year would just make next year trickier? Or is there some assumption here that attrition will be greater than expected? |

I can see why he'd at least be interested in Vandy, one of the rare schools that has both good academics and a solid, exciting football program. That being said, Vandy's never gonna be a first-tier SEC team. And although it's close to the Nashville music scene, the latter is still largely country. Additionally, Vandy is a very prim, socially conservative place. Michigan trumps Vandy in most areas, except weather. |

| 24 weeks 2 days ago | I'm not sure Arkansas is the |
I'm not sure Arkansas is the better job. Granted, football is king in Arkansas. He'll be the state's unofficial governer. But Arkansas has always been a good but second-tier SEC team, forever in the shadow of Bama, LSU, Florida, and Georgia. Wisconsin has been a top-tier program in the country's other big-ticket conference. Arkansas will never get to three straight Rose Bowls. And those fans down there are vicious. His job security will be far worse. Plus, he has to live in Arkansas. |
| 24 weeks 3 days ago | While this arrangement passes |
While this arrangement passes the eyeball test in Michigan's division, I don't think it does in the other one. Fans of those teams will see a division that makes no geographical sense -- Nebraska and Maryland -- and is probably the tougher of the two divisions. Plus, the traditional powers in that division -- Nebraska, PSU -- will be pissed that they won't get yearly match-ups against the big-ticket teams. I think this arrangement is pie-in-the-sky and won't fly. |

You're right about the team's weaknesses, which are considerable. But the team's strength -- a pretty legit two-threat QB (Devin) who thrives when outside the pocket -- totally went out the window in the second half. Naturally, Ohio figured out that Denard posed no passing threat. Which made third downs worlds easier to defend. Devin would have kept them honest on third and short. The demonstrably best strategy -- Devin scrambling, with Denard in the backfield, if only as a decoy -- was abandoned because Denard blew one or two blocking assignments. The coaches threw the baby out with the bathwater. They turned a two-headed monster into a one-dimensional QB. Bafffling. |

Such a depressing sop to the great moneyball in the sky. Totally dilutes the spirit and identity of the B10. Nobody wants to go play in Piscataway and College Park. Plus, now it's only a matter of time before 2 more teams are added to make it 16. Given the geographic trends, I'm guessing most people here agree that the best scenario would involve UNC and Virginia: top-notch schools with considerable fan-bases and tv markets. But why would basketball-first program leave the warm embrace of the ACC? I don't see UNC separating from Duke and NC State. Since it's all about TV, logic says the league now takes aim at other get-able schools near their new footprint (which unfortunately amounts to the dead-zone of college football): GTech, VA, VT, BC. The only remotely viable big-splash options left are Oklahoma, FSU. OU is a sub-standard school; the Noles literally have nothing in common with the other teams. Prediction: VA and GT.

Well, of course it's news. Ole Miss -- given its distinctly hateful past, its current tendency to wave Confederate flags, and its arguably small but still quite unashamed band of racists -- has come a long way, but clearly not far enough. You wouldn't see such overt displays of racism at many other large universities. Nor would you see so many student bystanders passively letting it happen. The only other recent example is LSU. But those rednecks weren't students; they were fans. |

I disagree. I think they just didn't give Gardner enough reps as a QB. He wasn't prepared to take over because they'd been running him at wr. Gardner was so-so last year, but worlds more talented than Bellamy. |
| 29 weeks 5 days ago | The coaches gambled and lost. |
The coaches gambled and lost. Gardner is almost certainly better able to play QB right now. But thanks to the lack of talent at receiver, they cut gardner's reps and prayed Denard wouldn't get hurt. As it turned out, though, Gardner hasn't shown much at receiver and we got stuck without an even remotely viable back-up QB. This is the first time I feel like Hoke really blew it. You can't go into a big game without a servicable back-up QB. They should have had Gardner prepared. You can walk and chew gum at the same time. |

I call bullshit whenever teams use the old "it's good for recruiting" when they schedule a road game. Seriously, if we played one game in Georgia or Florida, how much of a recruiting gain would that really give us in those states? As if a lot of top recruits would come to Jesus just because Michigan (or ND or whatever) happens to play a game in their state. Especially now that pretty much all big teams are on national tv all the time. |

Yes, of course it's true that Denard has better scrambling and pocket-presence talent. But the advantage still goes to teams that get in his face and force him to throw on the run. Because that's when he goes tacopants. ND's line is better and faster than it was last year. And I don't think we can rely on the fact that our current band of receivers will bail us out via Hemingway-esque hail-mary grabs. |
| 35 weeks 4 days ago | It's a pretty big stretch to |
It's a pretty big stretch to put M's passing game on par with that of USC, OU, and Stanford. Our passing-game strikes fear in the hearts of few. The good teams that have beaten us have done so by stacking the line and forcing Denard to throw. The ND game will be won or lost on the ground. |
| 35 weeks 4 days ago | Unfortunately, it's not as |
Unfortunately, it's not as simple as ND has a weak secondary = we can simply pick them apart through the air. ND didn't need strong DBs last night because its d-line didn't give Sparty time to throw. Fortunately, M's offense appears to be better and less predictable than Sparty's. And now M has seen some (though surely not all) of ND's tricks. But still. If ND's d-line is as nasty as it seems to be -- emphasis on seems -- M's offense will have a tough time. |

| 37 weeks 3 days ago | We were overrated for sure. |
We were overrated for sure. That was pretty clear from the outset. But I'm not sure 25 is quite fair either. Bama kills everyone. I think M belongs -- or, at least, will end up -- in the 15-20 range. The team isn't and won't be among the elites. But there's ample reason to like its chances against teams of the Illinois/Louisville/Utah variety. Regardless, I like us better as lower ranked underdogs. We're not playing for the MNC anyway. We're playing to win the B10. And I'd love nothing more than to see as solid dogs going into the ND and MSU games. Neither of those teams handle success well. |
| 37 weeks 3 days ago | Good question. Although I |
Although I wouldn't argue with anyone who says this Bama team is tops, I can't help thinking that the last two USC teams M faced in the Rose Bowl (2004 and 2007) were as good as any team we've faced. I realize the final scores didn't look so bad. But, jeez, those USC teams were like mini-NFL squads. They were in complete control, and both teams knew it. But of course the answer to the OP's question can't really be answered until after this season. I assume the question isn't really about single-game dominance, which isn't the best barometer -- Mississippi State, despite its dominance in the Gator Bowl, was hardly the best team M has faced. Context matters. If this Bama team runs the table, then they may well be the best opponent ever; if Bama ends up going 9-3, perhaps Saturday's loss will say more about Michigan's weakness than Bama's strength. |

| 37 weeks 3 days ago | So you're saying that |
So you're saying that Countess may have represented the difference between us winning and losing? Are you kidding? Most of Bama's strength came via its run game and its defense; its pass game was solid but hardly spectactular. With Countess in, we still lose by 20. Let go. Just let go. |

Michigan's O can't manball through Bama's stout D front. Nobody beats Bama in the trenches. M's best and only chance is to open things up via multiple receiver sets, draws, and delayed screens -- anything to create just enough space for Denard to find creases. I love manball. But our o-line, although talented, doesn't (yet) have the strength or depth to pound Bama's line. Something tells me we'll be seeing more passing than one might expect.
