I can't find the Frozone…

I can't find the Frozone stuff, but he had this link on his twitter:

My old stomping grounds in…

My old stomping grounds in the middle of the state seems to be trending that way.  My alma mater is Division 5 and we used to field 3 pretty full football teams of 30-ish kids each.  They are now down to just Varsity and JV and the JV team had 16 players.  I don't know where everyone is going but it doesn't look sustainable.

I can only assume this is…

I can only assume this is because Jesus has never tried real potato chips.  I don't know how he could have so many followers with backward views like this.

Agree so much with this. …

Agree so much with this.  Our kids play soccer and have to fill out a daily health check that asked if you are exhibiting any of 5-6 conditions.  But then has a caveat that they don’t count if they are attributable to a known medical condition.  We check “no” because our kids have allergies that are a disaster in the fall. But I have no true way of knowing if the sore throat and runny nose are because of ragweed or Covid.

I guess it says that we can…

I guess it says that we can save the institutions a lot of time and money by not testing. If this test is best used to find symptomatic people you don’t have to test. If you are sick stay home.

now if you want to test the teams and prevent outbreaks as the press and conference seems to indicate is the plan ….    You will need to find a new test method and you have about a week to get it figured out.

I don’t disagree with Bam…

I don’t disagree with Bam being better than Duncan, but you realize Jimmy Butler is on this team, right?  Bam is somebody you lock up long term and can build around but he isn’t quite their best player yet.

I don't know why headline…

I don't know why headline writers at news sources are so bad.  The article was informative and interesting.  But I kept waiting for the "science" about how they worked.  That part is more interesting to me since it is obvious that daily testing can help protect everyone.

Why should sports have…

Why should sports have anything at all to do with patriotism?  Most of it is phony as the NFL takes money from the government to advertise for the military.  Shouldn't we just show up to the game and play sports?

And as far as the disrespect:  One Chiefs player kneeled.  The Texans didn't come out to avoid any controversy and seemingly to avoid any support for this second "National Anthem".  So booing them standing together in solidarity for equal treatment seems strange.

This is where the question…

This is where the question of when do we open things up comes up.  You shouldn't wear a mask playing football because it is strenuous activity.  But, you have to wear a mask because it isn't possible to maintain physical distance.

So, logically, we shouldn't play football until there is a safe solution that doesn't contradict both of those requirements.  However, we want to watch football and it seems everyone wants to play.  if we are having football, is it safer to just let them have at it like normal or is it safer to wear a mask.  i would suggest the mask is the better of the two options (if we are saying football is good to go forward).

I can't speak about the…

I can't speak about the European soccer, but basketball is a horrible example.  They have been isolated from the world in a bubble.  Of course the close contact hasn't resulted in spread, nobody they come in contact with has been anywhere near the outside world in two months.

Exactly this.  The NHL and…

Exactly this.  The NHL and MLS also are in bubbles.  MLB has looked extremely dumb as they have had to cancel games and lose players.  I will withhold judgement on the NFL until they show how they are doing to handle it but I don’t have a lot of hope.

the three college conferences are just being obstinate.  Maybe in a way that the Big 10 should have but waiting until the last minute to cancel will still count as cancelled.

I was gonna go the other way…

I was gonna go the other way and give Rogers his moment.

"They truly are arrogant asses in Ann Arbor" - Daryl Rogers

I think those ideas are…

I think those ideas are legitimately feasible for groups on the size of athletic teams.  I think it is why the coaches and players are pushing for the announcement to not be made, today.

Similar to what you state at the end, I have zero belief that those protocols can hold up to the full student body and staff.  That is why, in my opinion, postponing or going online is the responsible way to run the school.

The fact that the suggested…

The fact that the suggested controls have done"precisely nada in terms of stopping the virus." seems totally off.  You say you wear a mask, so that is a +1 to you, but i have been multiple places where once people are through the door, the mask is around their throat.  And in my town and looking at my facebook feed, there is not a very strong adherence to the social distancing.  I don't have stats to back up my claims, but if we are only half-ass doing the suggestions we are only going to get half-ass results.

As far as kids not subjected to wearing masks or being forced to social distance, what is the better option.  Online learning, which didn't work for my kids unless I was there to help guide; or face-to-face with restrictions?  I would choose the face-to-face for my family even if they had to have "strange" procedures to make it happen.

Cumong, man.  I don't agree…

Cumong, man.  I don't agree with most of his recent posts, but this one is really logical and not at all "acting like the sky is falling".

Without a vaccine or immunity of some sort, everything he lists are how schools in Michigan are set to operate.  Why wouldn't they stay at 6 ft, masks, and no direct socialization?  That's how we've been told we keep it under control and that is what we will have to continue doing until we are clear.  So, until things are handled which looks to be at least a year for vaccines or until we decide normalcy is worth more than risk, the schools will be in a strange limbo period.

This is a reasonable stance…

This is a reasonable stance.  My concern about that has a couple of bullet points.

1) The people in charge that are saying that schools "MUST" be open aren't talking about the safety measures that need to be in place.  If that is smaller class size or something else, so be it.  But they should be coming with potential solutions, not blanket statements that schools must be open.

2) That's even more funding that is missing.  There isn't enough money to buy the cleaning products needed to reopen, let alone doubling the teachers or changing instruction time to have smaller classes.

That wasn't always the case:

That wasn't always the case:

Since I am not a public…

Since I am not a public health policy expert my answer is "until we are out of the woods".  My best guess is that it would be until we have reliable tests, data about immunity, or the infection or death rate falls below a certain number.

For the first two, I think those are relatively easy to measure.  There are stats about testing accuracy that the FDA has.  You meet a certain criteria for how good the test is and voila.  My immunity data is just a question of whether you truly are immune after having been exposed and how long your immunity lasts.  If we are going to be playing this game over and over again because you don't get immune, then I don't know what to do next.

For the last point, I would just say you get to a more robust testing system.  If we are currently at 20% of tests are positive, let's target X%.  If we are currently at a 4% death rate, let's get it down to 0.5% or whatever the flu or similar viruses are.

The order is because wearing…

The order is because wearing hasn't been universally accepted by regular people.  It is (from what I have seen) universally accepted by health officials.  All of the epidemiologists that I have seen interviews with along with the WHO (who apparently can't be trusted) and the CDC say to wear a mask.

Since people have tried to politicize it and make it a civil rights discussion it hasn't been universally accepted.  The order is to try and make people listen to science.

And it isn't really a new order.  The order is already there, this is just making it a crime.  I still don't see how it will be enforceable.

So we dropped “live” tv all…

So we dropped “live” tv all together.  Use the cable company for internet.  Have Netflix, Hulu, and Prime.

HD antenna for network live sports.

The wife uses Hulu to watch her network shows one day after they air.  The ones not on Hulu are usually available for a few weeks on the airing network app.

and a loophole that I’m probably gonna get turned off for myself by sharing. If I log in to the ESPN or fox sports app with my cable ID they are accepted and let me stream.  Doesn’t appear that they can tell that I am an internet only subscriber.

Cuisine in Detroit

The meal…

Cuisine in Detroit

The meal has since been surpassed by a few other plates and places.  However, the wife and I sat down to a $100+ per person tasting menu.  We'd never spent over $100 total at a restaurant before then.  But the meal really opened my eyes to what was possible with food and that if you choose wisely that it could be worth spending real money on food.

The sweet corn risotto that was part of my meal was super simple but blew me away.

Our best vacation ever was 7…

Our best vacation ever was 7 days in New Zealand as part of an Australia vacation.  A few days on the North Island to check out Auckland and surrounds and the rest of the time on the South Island hiking and doing nature stuff.  If it weren't a disgustingly long flight I would go back all the time.

I though Kaunas was a little…

I though Kaunas was a little boring, but the main boulevard was under construction.  We loved our days in Vilnius and hanging out on the Baltic coast was a good time, too.

Your statement isn't wrong,…

Your statement isn't wrong, but they announced they were going to start working on 5/18, which was after the existing 5/15 end date.  Her announcement, today, merely let the supply base start working on 5/11 to support the 5/18 start date.

Most of what else has been…

Most of what else has been stated were fun and I always loved the Tecmo's and EA versions of most things.  But, I really remember loving Super Spike VBall and Super Dodgeball as go to sports games

I'm on the same timeline as…

I'm on the same timeline as you.  We've been told work starts on 5/15 but unless you are needed to stay working from home.  I don't have anything to do in-person until middle of June.

I also second the wanting to do this full time.  We have eaten dinner as a family every day since this happened and typically that is only a Friday-Sunday thing.  This, along with being able to duck out, as needed, to get things done has been amazing.

I agree with all of your…

I agree with all of your comments but it wasn't just the acting early.  Michigan started the official shelter in place 24 hours after Ohio.  Schools were closed on the same day.  DeWine did a bunch of smaller things before Whitmer, but nothing drastically different.  There is something about how it spread in SE Michigan that seems to have caused all the difference.

I am waiting for a detailed…

I am waiting for a detailed announcement from any governor.  And they are sort of the announcements that have been missing all along.  Let's have some clear plan and stick to it with clearly defined rules.  The federal government guidelines are decent first stabs at what we should be striving for.

The biggest gray area in the guidelines is what is a "robust" testing system.  I think we are still missing that.  And if people behave and the businesses that can allow people to continue working at home, we are sort of back in business.

However, I think we need to be clear up front on what data could turn the restrictions back on and if those are local, regional, or statewide.  Is any increase bad or is it some 5-consecutive days of increase or something?  This might also help people behave if there is a risk of going back if you are stupid.

Similar thing happened to me…

Similar thing happened to me.  But with a streak of 5 I am back to 3-star.  In 5 more days (as long as I don't forget again) I will be 4-star.

Woohoo!

This happened to me.  I was…

This happened to me.  I was getting close to 4-star status.  Had 4-stars for total turns and streak and creeping on round turns.  Missed a day and now I'm back to one star.

That's exactly what the…

That's exactly what the curve flattening is all about.  The places taking corrective measures have a much lower peak, but it is also much later in the trend.

Except the point of the…

Except the point of the check is to buy those consumer goods.  There is a separate part of the stimulus to make sure unemployment stays flowing so that you can purchase the essentials.  The reason they are sending out the direct payments is to make sure we continue to buy cars, tvs, couches, etc so that those companies can continue to exist and the supply chains don't all fail

We decided to go TV-free,…

We decided to go TV-free, until I decide what to do for football season.  Since the Wings, Pistons, and Tigers all suck, I don't need sports until next fall.  I hooked up an HD antenna so we can watch the Super Bowl.

Just using Netflix and Hulu to cover any entertainment needs until then.

We ended up saving about $35…

We ended up saving about $35 a month cutting the cord.  We got a pretty good deal on internet only, so it worked nice for us.

There could be an argument…

There could be an argument made that adding a 4-point line could make the expected value of each shot more equal and thus leading to teams having to defend everywhere.  If the average NBA shot has a value of 1 point, you could put a 4 point line at 30 feet which would be worth 1 point on average for a 25% accuracy.  I sort of stole this from Slate

Also, the point makes the ends of games more entertaining.  Instead of down 4 and having to make a 3 and foul and hope for misses (boring and time consuming) you just jack up a 4-pointer as time expires.  Something to be said for punishing teams that have a 4 or 5 point lead at the end of the game, but everything is arbitrary anyway.

I think this is actually a…

I think this is actually a good idea.  What's wrong with rewarding a guy for being able to shoot 30 footers?  Also makes more games close at the end.  I would think this rule would be implemented in games that count way before a 3-pt free throw.

My only addition to the…

My only addition to the above comments is to make sure it is a BS degree.  There was a time during my undergraduate struggles that the University offered me an LSA degree in Engineering.  So, please, verify at the schools you are looking into that is a Bachelor of Science diploma.

No way he could have gotten…

No way he could have gotten the first guy.  Here is the shot as the pitched is picking up the ball.

The second guy scores because nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition.  That suicide bunt is a common enough baseball play so he was just taking the out at first base.  Didn't think anybody would be crazy enough to score from second.

My concern in electrics is long-term dependability.  My phone battery starts to go to pot after 2 years.  Am I going to be able to buy a 5 year old electric car and get good range?  If not, what will be the service cost of a new battery pack?
